I was painting this week. I use the phrase “making another pass” to describe painting on a painting which was “unfinished”, or even “finished”. Not to be confused with “recycling” in which a “finished” work is reused but the imagery is mostly, or completely, obliterated. Then there is “86’d” which is (at least in this case) old restaurant jargon for discarded. Of the 11 paintings in my Ho’okolonaio series from a year ago, 10 were already recycled from other series. This week I can report that none were recycled but 6 did receive another pass, 1 of which was radically changed enough to require a new title. Ironically the only non-recycled piece of the group got 86’d. I did collage a few of its eyes onto another painting so it wasn’t a complete 86, but still it’s gone. This post is “Ali’i ‘I’iwi” oil on wood, h 11” x 11”, 2019 and, like the others I worked on this week, I mostly like, so it’s safe, at least for now. Many artists work this way but not everyone approves. A question they might ask: is nothing finished, is nothing worth preserving ? But I’ve never cared, in fact it feels good to change or destroy things I make, even things I liked. My biggest regret about moving to New York is not having any way to burn things when I get the urge! It’s all pointless anyway. #hawaii #hawaiian #hawai'i #colonization #hawaiianindependence #haole #liliuokalani #kingdomofhawaii #nycpainter #nypainter #newyorkpainter #newyorkart #newyorkartist #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #nycart #brooklynartist #volcano #lava #pacific (at Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu2IpNLFK3A/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=2giyrcc74k6r

We long to make contributions to the world as Hawaiians, to exist as a Hawaiian nation, to add 'a Hawaiian presence' to the world community. Establishment of a sovereign Hawaiian nation will give us that chance.

My most recent Pineapple/Volcano/Tower/Canoe came out great! The warm t-1 clay hue on the Canoe bottoms and poking through the blues and greens is just gorgeous. To explain the form........ umm: last year I tried to make an outrigger Canoe to go with my Hawaiian theme, a shell, an aloha shirt, a pineapple, etc. But the clay outrigger” part drooped. I first pictured supporting struts, like a suspension bridge, but that evolved into a volcano cone. So, two Hawaiian icons in one. I made the first Volcano/Canoe. (It took two tries, the first broke as greenware) My other themes include Airstrike explosions and puffs of smoke so for the next Canoe I thought I should have a large smoky explosive eruption coming out the top. But since I made the volcano so big in the first place a big smoke would have made it all too heavy. Lightbulb: create a pineapple top as a metaphor for an eruption. The result was still too heavy and drooped in the firing. Also I broke some leaves, and a canoe, so I trashed it. The next version was smaller and came out perfectly, and I nailed down my glaze combos which are basically the sea and sky. Yet another theme is high-voltage transmission towers and, having just made a nice porcelain one, I decided to add that into the mix, which is also an echo of the original suspension bridge idea. The result is more tower that volcano but I think the clay body’s earthy tone is what’s so beautiful about this last piece. #hawaii #hawaiian #hawai'i #kilauea #hawaiianindependence #kingdomofhawaii #newyorkart #newyorkartist #contemporaryart #nycart #brooklynartist #pineapple #volcano #lava #pacific #ceramic #ceramics #sculpture #handbuilding #clay (at Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs1C5aTFWEA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=112230rsxd61l

I made a shiny lava rock yo go with my Ho’okolonaio Series of Hawai’ian objects. It doesn’t really look like lava but I like holding it in my hand. #hawaii #hawaiian #hawai'i #colonization #kilauea #hawaiianindependence #haole #liliuokalani #kingdomofhawaii #newyorkart #newyorkartist #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #nycart #brooklynartist #volcano #lava #pacific #ceramic #ceramics #sculpture #handbuilding #clay (at Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn)

“The Death of Captain Cook” oil on masonite, h29.75” x w36”, 2020 Details. The painting is drying in the new studio nook. The nook, which was Jenni’s idea resulting from 5 months of pandemic induced togetherness, accommodates a 4x2 ft. table, a vintage sewing machine and storage. It’s cozy, and a good place to work. It’s notable that 3 of the last 5 paintings I’ve worked on contain crowds of people, protesting the police, socially distancing, repelling would be colonialists. You would think I was lonely and it’s true, I miss the New York crowds, but I’ve also always been alone, in my head, in the studio. And the people inhabiting this painting, the islanders and colonists, the soldiers, warriors, wahines, farmworkers and royalty, are all just impressions, sometimes no more than a little squiggles of paint. But they’ve been good company. #kaiulani #liliuokalani #kalaniopuu #kamehameha #hokulea #captaincook #dolepineapple #hawaii #hawaiian #hawai'i #hawaiianindependence #haole #kingdomofhawaii #nycpainter #nypainter #newyorkpainter #contemporarypainting #nycart #brooklynartist #volcano #lava #pacific #outrigger #outriggercanoe (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CETuINnF_DR/?igshid=1x0na1kngtp95

“The Death of Captain Cook” oil on masonite, h29.75” x w36”, 2020 This painting comes after a long series of Hawaiian themed drawings, paintings and ceramics in which I explored many of my notions about simultaneously being, and not being, Hawaiian. I call this series “Ho’okolonaio”, or “colony” and you can see many examples by scrolling my posts. Many of those themes reappear in this epic scene. But this painting also follows in the tradition of the many historic depictions of this 1779 event and actually quotes figures from a few, something I’ve never done before. When I add figures from throughout Hawaii’s history the painting becomes unmoored in time and, I hope, unique. It also comes a year after finding by chance a group of Hawaiians in New York City chanting and dancing in support of Mauna Kea. For several months I joined them weekly when I could. This year personal circumstances, as well as the pandemic, have kept me away from them but not a day has gone by that I do not think of the Mauna and the many Hawaiian people scattered across the earth. #hawaii #hawaiian #hawai'i #colonization #hawaiianindependence #kingdomofhawaii #nycpainter #nypainter #newyorkpainter #newyorkart #newyorkartist #contemporarypainting #nycart #brooklynartist #volcano #lava #pacific #captaincook #deathofcaptaincook #hawaii1893 #outrigger #iiwi #wahine #doleplantationhawaii #kamehameha #liliuokalani (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEQCB65lP5O/?igshid=u0o4k9imr119

“Captain Cook Kidnapped Kalaniʻōpuʻu” oil on canvas 20”x20” 2020 I like how paintings are created, how they are willed into existence with a few memories, some photos, a historic painting, some ceramic sculptures maybe, some imagination....... One never really knows exactly how they’ll turn out. It’s exciting. #hawaii #hawaiian #hawai'i #colonization #hawaiianindependence #haole #liliuokalani #kingdomofhawaii #nycpainter #nypainter #newyorkpainter #newyorkart #newyorkartist #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #nycart #brooklynartist #volcano #lava #pacific #captaincook (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CC4qDORlH7r/?igshid=mjvnd6wvqbip

After a few additions this painting “Kamehameha Lost His Hands” seems finished, again, for now. But, like the imagination that produced it, it’s never fixed in space or time. It always carries with it what it was and what it could be. #hawaii #hawaiian #hawai'i #colonization #hawaiianindependence #haole #liliuokalani #kingdomofhawaii #nycpainter #nypainter #newyorkpainter #newyorkart #newyorkartist #contemporaryart #contemporarypainting #nycart #brooklynartist #volcano #lava #pacific #kamehameha (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCyM9BOF7jX/?igshid=btrv1yonbmx4

I keep looking at these porcelain figurines I made. They’re really beautiful and complex, partly historical, somewhat traditional and mythical, very striking and unique. Like I imagine most artists do I can’t help staring at them, amazed at what I did somehow, all the many hours of work, the deadline, learning the process from scratch. The glaze combos and designs are gorgeous and rich. I love how they reference rock art, each figure to the other and also my past artwork. And also the porcelain itself, just holding it in my hands. Even as a middle aged man whose made a thousand things I still get a giddy feeling, excited about art, amazed by a simple act of creation. I hope you all still get that feeling too. . . #hawaii #hawaiian #hawai'i #colonization #kilauea #hawaiianindependence #haole #liliuokalani #kingdomofhawaii #volcano #lava #pacific #alohashirt #nycart #brooklynartist #newyorkart #newyorkartist #contemporaryart #contemporaryceramics #ceramic #ceramics #sculpture #handbuilding #clay #slipcasting #porcelain #figurine #sold (at Brooklyn, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6X8n7ilBnn/?igshid=t2axkocg4sh4

The shards are too close to my face The shiny parts attract me The color is poison The sizzling rocks, the sizzling city passing below Born of fire I’ve gotten lost there A reverse volcano Burning then falling then pooling underground Waiting for life to begin And who to colonize next? . . #hawaii #hawaiian #hawai'i #colonization #kilauea #hawaiianindependence #haole #liliuokalani #kingdomofhawaii #volcano #lava #pacific #alohashirt #nycart #brooklynartist #newyorkart #newyorkartist #contemporaryart #contemporaryceramics #ceramic #ceramics #sculpture #handbuilding #clay #slipcasting #porcelain #figurine (at Manhattan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6Mq7POF5Sg/?igshid=129onwkhc04et
