Transcript: Theater kid patience soul is sooo real and I'm glad I'm not the only one who had the idea of the toy knife being a prop- speaking of items specific to the fallen humans tho. Do you think chara had two when they fell from the surface? The heart locket and knife were gift wrapped for us by either flowey/asgore so they could have had them when they fell but I always assumed they got both from the dreemurrs doesnt make much sense for them to have the locket b4 falling imo ( I like the idea that chara had the kitchen book as their DF item and some sort of switchblade or even butter knife as their ATK item which they then replaced with the heart locket and real knife respectively after living with the dreemurrs)-> also why is the real knife always drawn like a chefs knife the game implies it's a gardening knife?? even then y did we limit them to such a bland depiction- chara with a bread knife or deboning knife recking much more havoc when??? Maybe different chara aus can have different signature knives...

Introducing everyone to my version of a lot of Ink!characters with all the illustrations/doodles I did for them (there are more but I am not convinced about the design)!!
Original Inktale/Ink!Sans to @comyet
Undereats/Roo to @sui-imi
More of infos about them under the cut:
- They come from the same forgotten au of Ink!Sans, they just escaped later after that a big fight between all the main outcodes created a "tearing" in their au allowing them to escape.
- I decided to make them chill and protected by plot armory cuz there is already Underverse and Alive!tale for serious plots(Just realised it sounds passive aggressive af I promise I don't mean it's a bad thing, I just wanna make silly characters without a solid and serious plots (for now)). Sometimes you just need a kind of op chaotic gang made of weirdos that like causing havoc <3
- Mad Mew Mew instead came from a cancelled au and Undyne just grabbed her and was like "You are my friend now! We are having soft tacos later!!"
- They all have a house somewhere in the void they built with ink and bricks.(I have a specific headcanon about what Ink is in the Multiverse so it's actually weird).
- They are and see each other as a found family (except Undyne and Alphys that have feelings for each other, Papyrus and Mettaton that has a "situation-ship"/"partners in crimes" relationship)
- They are very chaotic neutral and like messing with people in the whole Multiverse just for the giggles. They protect it too but they treat this role like Sans treats his hotdog stand.
- They don't hold any grudges over Ink Sans and always help him when needed. He usually forgot about them but any time he remembers about them he visited them or sent them something.
- Alphys created a gadget similar to a cellphone that advised the rest of the gang if one is in danger and sent them their positions.
- Frisk and Chara wear these matching hooded jackets both to hide themselves when traveling in aus (since many of them are either dead, very important or very evil) and both cuz they wanted to match.
- There's a "Flowey" too but since he doesn't feel he is a Flowey/Asriel changed his name in Delta and is currently thinking what kind of person he wants to be. He has a bit of identity issues but he is strong, he will make it :>
- This is not a fact but a gag/promise but I decided that any blogs or ask events I will make, the asks are gonna be delivered by Ink Papyrus. There's no reason that it's just funny.
- Mettaton's red flag is that he has the tendency to invite in-universe characters in his show and make the MTT-rated equivalent of Saw minus the dying but it's alright red is everyone's fav colour(except Core Frisk)
- There are also other guys like Grillby, Muffet and a few of Ruins monsters but I would call them "secondary characters"(I love them anyway with all my heart but they are not part of the house)

I know I said I was going to put the Deltarune stuff on hold for a while, but...
There's something crazy I just discovered due to one of the many theories I heard on YouTube and it got me thinking a lot.
Do you remember the last tape from the true lab in Undertale?
In this last one there are some abnormal things like the sound in the background, and it’s not possible that Asriel could have made this recording, not when his best friend was dying. This brings us to something creepy, since the only place where this type of recording could have been made it’s inside a laboratory, with cameras in different positions.
What I'm getting at is:
Gaster was probably there when this event happened, as he was the owner of the lab back then. It’s likely the Dreemurr family brought Chara to the true lab because they were hoping Gaster could do something to heal them, since they didn't know much about humans. Chara was Gaster's first human patient, and Gaster already knew about the brothers plan, because he watched the secret tapes they left during his research.
During that time, Gaster could have talked with Chara about this and proposed a deal, something like:
“Give me information about your kind and samples of your body and soul for my experiments, in exchange of speeding your plan by making your death faster with my stuff”
Chara saw this was the best thing, so they accepted, not knowing the kind of darkness that would be unleashed later. In the end, the tragedy of Asriel and Chara happened, Gaster didn’t stop them, some human kids fell and he continued experimenting in secret, behind the kings' backs. Things continued like this, until Gaster’s curiosity and obsession got out of hand and fell into his creation, breaking into thousands of pieces throughout space and time.
Now, we don't know at what point Gaster realized his entire world was part of a game, but he most likely did some datamining and watched Flowey's numerous playthroughs to figure it out. This pretty much destroyed him in many ways, I don't know to what extent, but something tells me what he was before died there a long time ago. All that's left in him is madness, and now the players are taking part in probably his last experiment, one with an uncertain ending and purpose.
--------
Another thing I want to point out is: Gaster seems to target pacifist/mischievous/vulnerable subjects to make deals and promises with, then he grants them powers and in some cases shows them the truth. This leads to some of them becoming mad and causing havoc.
Now I’ll proceed to mention all the subjects that are known so far:
The confirmed ones: Player – Jevil – Spamton – The next secret bosses.
Unsure/ Probably are: Kris – Ralsei – Sans (Undertale) – Papyrus (Undertale)
Probably the next: Susie – Noelle
It seems we’re involved in something very dark, a situation beyond the player's control, but there's still hope. Whatever Kris and Ralsei are planning together in secret may be the key to solve this (that is if you continue along the normal-pacifist route).
This is all just theory, but let's see what the future holds for us.

Infectale
[Undertale alternative universe]
Welcome to an alternative universe called Infectale.
A universe filled with physical suffering. A universe simply horrible and anything but pacifist.
But first things first. Let me introduce you to the people I've created for the moment. (Others may appear later.)
Which characters are important ?
First of all, let me say that some images are taken from Pinterest. Others are real drawings If you recognize some of the drawings, it's because they've been taken from Pinterest. I got them a long time ago.
Gab & Aeris.
First and foremost. The two humans we can play. The main characters.
Gab is characterized by his violence and Aeris by her kindness.
Glitched408
The glitched skeleton of the universe. Consisting of Glitch and Virus. Being one of the reasons for the extinction of the universe.
It is often recognized as very combative and manipulative.
Shieven
The savior of this Universe. The one who devotes himself to saving even the worst beings in the universe. He is known for his infinite goodness.
Amnésite
Infectale's parasite. He who uses the corpses of his companions as habitat. He's not very well known in the universe. Prefers to hide. That said, he remains one of Gaster's prey, just like the others.
Hackster
The second Infectale Virus created in the very code of the universe. One of the most recurrent dangers of this Universe. Known for wreaking havoc throughout the universe.
Caprika
One of the least-known skeletons in this Universe. The one that wasn't supposed to leave the laboratory until Father allowed it to. After an unfortunate incident, he was able to leave without his father's help.
Gaster
Gaster, in this universe, didn't fall into the Core. He hasn't disappeared. He's just a scientist passing off atrocious experiments as just games to make what he calls his weapons. Known to be the most atrocious bastard in this Universe
Asriel
This is the child of Toriel and Asgore. The new prince. The one the player will meet first. Here, he's not flowey, but he can become one thanks to the toy given to him by Gaster. The INSERTION button. Known for restoring order in Infectale only.
Riverperson.
And here we are at last, the person, or should I call her… Thing, the monster, the most important thing in the universe. The creator, the one who orchestrated everything from the start. The riverperson. But his case would take so long to cover that it would require a whole page.
Soon… Important places will be added. Glitched408

My favorite or liked Undertale Aus
There was an AU named Ghostswap or Ghost Swap but I couldn't find it when I searched it up. Not a single trace. It was Chara and Asriel switching places after death, Chara is Flowey (Flora) and Asriel is a ghost following Frisk around. It was a really nice au.
Endertale is an au in pacifist route on the surface where Chara tries to get Frisk to finish the genocide route they didn't finished and reseted before finishing and Chara tries to force Frisk by making them life a hell and eventually trying to possess them. Frisk is very determined to resist.
Chronotale is an AU where Chara has memory/code manipulation power and also Chara code manipulated Frisk into thinking Chara is her sister. This is one of my most favorites.
Ask Flowey (Floweypot au) is an undertale au taking place on the pacifist on the surface and Flowey and Sans has beef with each other You can find some more of this au here.
Reapertale is an Sans x Toriel au where the main casts is a god and Chara goes and steal Sans' (god of death in the au) scythe and causes havoc.
Twinrunes is an Undertale x Deltarune crossover where Frisk comes out of somewhere and now living with Kris' family which Kris wasn't happy with at first. Also Chara is a silly ghost following Frisk.
Interverted fate is an AU where Frisk dies in the true pacifist route to Asriel and Asriel accidently made the world roleswapped and turned back into Flowey, if I continue it'll be a spoiler. There's an animated series on youtube too, you can search it up.
Stand in is an AU in a soulless pacifist route on the surface where Frisk and Chara share the same body. I got bored of it when it hit the final chapter since the final chapter hits different. It's also pretty skippy so sometimes I have to piece things together. For TW there's the aged up Frisk x Sans ship since I mean... it's an old AU.
Endless route takes place in the genocide run where Frisk kills everyone repeatedly and gets souls to defeat Chara since I think Frisk couldn't go to the surface or something. For TW there's blood/gore and a sister child murder scene. Also Frisk somehow turned blond.
Sukiro's Au which I don't know the name of seems to be a new au where a ghost Asriel sees Frisk as Chara and follows Frisk though the underground, Asriel is kinda like those narrator!Charas but not that narrator. I love this.
COOLSKELETON59 is an au where something does identity fraud on Papyrus who it killed him.
Tell me if I should change something, I don't know what is the most spoilered without explaining it detailly.

UT POKÉMON TEAMS
...Omega Flowey 👁👄👁
1. Malamar: This Pokémon forces others to do its bidding, much like how Flowey forces the SOULs to attack Frisk during his fight. It is a Pokémon associated with villains and is thought to be the blame behind many horrible, history-changing events. This Pokémon evolves from Inkay, a Pokémon on Chara's team, symbolizing Flowey's connection to Chara and his secret desire to have them back. It also represents Flowey's evolution from a timid child to a manipulator.
2. Trevenant: An evolved form of Asriel's Phantump, it is a Pokémon formed by the soul of a dead child. When it evolves into Trevenant, its root system can control an entire forest. It traps people in forests so they can never leave, the same way Flowey traps Frisk in a loop of torture. Other creatures can live in its body the way the human SOULs inhabit Flowey's body.
3. Ferrothron: This steel and grass type Pokémon looks like the thorny bits of Omega Flowey's body. It is also said to live in caves and caverns. The dual steel and grass typing is a perfect match to Omega Flowey's mis-mashed, eldritch horror form that pulls from organic matter like plants and animals and inorganic matter like a television and wires.
4. Tyranitar: Its name comes from the word "Tyrant". Tyranitar devours whole mountains and can level them in an instant. It is a Pokémon inspired by kaiju, giant Japanese monsters sometimes created through large amounts of nuclear radiation (a nod to the atomic bombs Flowey drops). It is said to have an impudent and insolent nature, so it doesn't care about others. Its body is also supposed to be impervious to physical attacks, like Omega Flowey. It wanders through mountains seeking opponents to fight.
5. Drifblim: Drifblim evolves from Drifloon, a balloon-like Pokémon that appears harmless but can steal away children and take their souls. Drifblim itself is known for its ability, "Aftermath," which causes a huge explosion (another reference to Omega Flowey's fire and bomb based attacks). According to its Pokédex entry, "The raw material for the gas inside its body is souls."/"Some say this Pokémon is a collection of souls burdened with regrets."
6. Coragrigus: This Pokémon looks like a ghost possessing a coffin. It evolves from Yamask, a Pokémon that used to be a human and misses its human life. Cofagrigus steals souls and traps people and Pokémon in its body, wrapping then up and mummifying them to keep them trapped forever. A comparison can be made to Flowey's vines, wrapping people up and keeping them trapped. Like Omega Flowey, this Pokémon possesses several human-like limbs. According to its Pokédex entry: "People say it no longer remembers that it was once human."
As for Omega Flowey's Legendary and Mythical... I chose Necrozma and Spiritomb.
Necrozma: Necrozma steals all light and causes the death of stars; it said to sleep underground. It takes over other Pokémon to steal their light/energy, the way Flowey takes over and uses the human SOULs for power. It is also a nod to the Legendary associated with Asriel, Cosmog. In the Pokémon franchise, Necrozma is the enemy of Cosmog and its evolved forms, Lunala and Solgaleo, stealing their light and taking over their bodies. It's a representation of Flowey's new identity replacing Asriel, and the change he's gone through as a person since he came back as a flower.
Spiritomb: Spiritomb is a Pokémon formed by multiple souls trapped in a Keystone. It is unclear whether every soul in Spiritomb is evil, or just a few. In the Japanese legend that inspired this Pokémon, 108 demons are released from a stone and wreck havoc on the world before they atone for their sins and become the 108 stars. This is an allusion to Flowey's battle, during which the corrupted SOULs become good and begin helping Frisk.

Do clarify me if I’m wrong but is there a world out there with TADC characters in the JJK-like world if the opposite is true? (Also would TADC!Ilia also be able to show his friends their multiverse counterparts?) sorry for the complicated ask?
Yea there's a TADC x JJK world. It's a more fluid world or like there are definitely multiple iterations of the world that I will jump around because I don't want to commit to a single canon of the world.
One of the main ones I want to explore is Pomni as Yuji and Caine as Mahito, but there is also a world where it's Pomni as Yuji and Caine as Satoru. So basically anything is possible with who is in which role.
That being said, TADC Ilia most likely has a little pop-up window that he uses to help Mahito explain the rules to the players. Randomly a glitch will appear where a vision of another world will come through and disrupt him explaining the rules.
Mainly this would be used for comedic effect, but it would probably also be used to cause more mental harm to the players since that is what Mahito would want and Ilia is here for him and the other NPCs/AIs. So like Ilia showing the happier version of Yuji and the rest in Eriverse or even the worse versions of themselves in the JJK canon.
You know? I think I said that Ilia wouldn't have been a vindictive person the last time someone sent me an ask about his TADC self liking to hurt people, and while I still think that holds true, he probably doesn't hold himself at such a high regard that it's not an option for him to hurt others for fun.
So like, Swap Ilia does not hurt people for fun at all, even struggling some time killing curses who are too cool and instead wanting to train and convert them to the side of "good" rather than exercise.
JJK Ilia is probably the most passive, for the most part. Until he find people/curses he likes, then he becomes a little follower of them and does whatever they want/need.
Eriverse Ilia is more active in his helpfulness to Entities. Sometime even taking a bit of joy in causing havoc and chaos, especially if it means his entity friends are happy.
Then there is TADC Ilia who would be very willing and okay to cause pain on others, but doesn't find any like pure/true joy in the act. Instead it is a more "what happens if I do [x]" kind of scenario. Something interesting to do and to see happen, like how Flowey Undertale started experimenting with people's lives after countless reset (unlike Mahito who is hurting people both for the research aspect, but also just the pure fun of it in all universes where he is not the "good" guy)

"Life starts, like most things do, with a dream. A flame that grows and grows until it's something more. Something,,, greater. It becomes a Volcano, which becomes an island, which becomes a continent, which becomes the planet. Then the planet, and dream, like most things do, begins to fade.
It's a tragic event, when dreams begin to fade. Unfortunately, nothing short of making them reality will ever stop them from fading.
In fact, even this dream is beginning to fade, my dear child…
It's about time you woke up, after all."

How did you get the idea to create havoc Sans?.
And!,you draw look amazing>:)
I have 🥧 for you!,have good day!
oh, thanks for the question!
oh, the idea came spontaneously. it was somewhere in the middle of january 2022. i often have bursts of inspiration, and then i thought: "what cool idea can i come up with for the new Sans? ..." and i thought of the apocalypse, chaos in the underground, where only sans survived (sorry, i fell under the influence of Sans fans. at the moment there are two more characters besides him). at first i thought out more sans than the main story, but later the main story too.
in the initial ideas i imagined him as vulnerable and whiny (oh shi–), but i realized that HE is literally a classic SANS, and why the hell is he a crybaby then?! although I still think that he doesn't look like classic Sans 🤔 (well, he's after the apocalypse :Ь)
I've changed his design many times, and I don't know yet if it's good enough or not.
I can't say the exact date of his "birth", maybe earlier than January 28, because my first drawing with him was drawn on January 28 (before I looked at the date, I thought that his birthday was somewhere in February, ehhehe)
but in principle, you can consider that his birthday is January 28 :D
I've moved away from the question a little, oh... well, a year and a half later I came up with H!Flowey, then H!Frisk and H!Chara, but they are not as well written as H!Sans.
Havoc's drawings from the very first to the last:
maybe not all
interesting fact: Havoc was previously called Glitch (it also fits), but since this name was already taken, I changed it after a long time :33 (I like Havoc more ehehe)
!(sorry if the translation is incorrect)!
and thanks for the pie!

OKAY. I will say, it got a little bit underwhelming there at the end? Just cause I feel like too much of the pacifist dialogue and cutscenes were the same.
Like I get that it's underfell and no one's exactly gonna be bothered if I go around killing everything in sight, but I think Suzie's & Noelle's general attitude should've changed more drastically. It had it's moments but then other default interactions made it gel together weird, idk. And the Sans fight was completely unchanged?? Just kind of a let down after the absolute havoc of the mother timeline
But ayo what was that flowey thing at the end tho 👀👀👀
Apparently it's called Obliteration Route in this game? So here we fuckin go bby
I FUCKING KILLED NAPSTABLOOK??? This is already so fucked up and I'm just doing it with Frisk
How much worse is the Kris route >_>
#I get that Kris and co Talked alone but like. that doesn't reduce the impact of being forced to kill again and again even if they know it's#not Kris doing it#so ya I expected it to get.. grimmer#oh well p much everything else abt this game is great I have some more fuel to run on until chapter 3

Ralsei Is A Titan
The titans are a highly speculative species in the lore of Deltarune. We have little to no info on them at the moment other than that they happen during a roaring. However if you are to do some digging you’ll learn something VERY VERY interesting about the middle titan.
How Do The Titans Work?
Before we go any further we need to examine how the titans work. According to Ralsei once the roaring begins the titans will take form from the fountains.
They will then wreak havoc across the world.
From then one the Darkners will all turn to stone and the Lightners will be lost in eternal darkness.
How Does Ralsei Work?
Now that we’ve seen the way the titans work we need to see the way Ralsei works. Ralsei is a special creature, neither lightner nor darkner. He has a colored portrait like a darkner,
Yet he has strange qualities unlike other darkners. For example he can survive in other dark worlds when other darkners would turn to stone.
He also disintegrates upon death unlike anything else we’ve seen so far.
Last but not least he knows about layouts and places in the light world.
Now this all is explained through something. Something that makes this theory so much more interesting. Ralsei gets these powers from the central dark fountain in the castle town.
Not only is this stated by Ralsei but according to Ralsei’s manual he’s literally MADE of the dark fountain.
Remind me, how exactly do the titans work??
Oh yeah, they form fro the fountains, just like Ralsei. Ralsei also bears visual similarities to the middle titan. They both have horns and fur and the eyes from Ralsei’s dark world are present on the middle titans body.
So this all raises suspicion on Ralsei, but there’s even more strange things that we see involving Ralsei and his connection to the titans.
Foreshadowing
Something that is seriously overlooked in the Deltarune theorizing community is all the strange foreshadowing behind Ralsei. First of all let’s take a look at this secret.
This shows up when we backtrack after doing the boat ride with Ralsei, the broken camera is conveniently placed between two things that look very similar to the twin titans. This is actually reminiscent of an unused feature planned for Undertale. Toby was originally planning on foreshadowing the Flowey X fight through out the entire game. This is seen through Gyftrot and an unused sprite for waterfall.
In fact, Ralsei has tons of similarities to Flowey. Both are associated with flowers.
Both teach us about our soul.
Both are the first of their species that we meet.
Both are interrupted using fire.
Both are the princes of their respective kingdoms.
Both teach us about saving.
Both befriend the human.
Both end the manuals of their respective games in the same fashion
And both know more than they’re letting on. However on the topic of foreshadowing Ralsei becoming a warped boss creature like Flowey, there’s even more to discuss. Notice how Ralsei recruits every darkner we meet from their own dark worlds?
This entire process is eerily similar to what Flowey did in order to absorb everyones souls.
Not to mention that Asriel absorbs everyones souls by covering them in light, and the roaring covers everyone in darkness.
The real question though is if Ralsei is a titan, why did he warn us about the roaring? There’s one of two possibilities. He either wanted to wait until later on to unleash the roaring, or the second option, which is what i believe to be the true motivation, which is...
Ralsei Has Experienced A Roaring
Now hear me out, this may seem crazy at first but there’s actually a lot of evidence to back it up. First of all look at the first area of Ralsei’s dark world.
It’s a barren wasteland full of eyes, dust, and what almost seems to be blood. This matches up with what the titans look like and what the roaring itself looks like.
What’s even more interesting about this though is that the light world before this area lines up with the description of the roaring that the lightners will face.
The supply closet is a completely dark area with almost nothing inside, it behaves differently than the other dark fountains as well, and of course, it fits the description of a lightner roaring.
So with all this in mind we can conclude that Ralsei has experienced a roaring, that’s why Ralsei becomes so emotional when its brought up, and why he knows about how it works in the first place. But how come he’s emotional if he’s a titan, meaning it’s his fault that everything was destroyed? Well I believe that he can’t control becoming a titan. It’s almost like a werewolf, when the three fountains are open Ralsei uncontrollably becomes a terrifying monster that destroys everything in its path. This also explains why Ralsei has no subjects, he killed them all.
Ralsei hiding his face also makes a lot more sense now, why would he want to potentially reveal himself to someone who may notice that he’s the one who destroyed the dark world? This also explains why he’s so bad at making friends, he’d definitely feel like a failure and a terrible friend after what he did. Something even more interesting about this though is that it further aligns with the Flowey parallels. When Flowey becomes Asriel again he feels horrible for what he’s done, he wants to make it up to everyone, to fix what he started. Ralsei is doing the same thing, he wants to seal all the fountains so he can never hurt his friends again, he wants to disappear forever to ensure everyone else's safety. Guess who else wanted to do that?
What’s interesting about Flowey too is that his arc in Undertale never truly ended. He got over his idolization but he just went on to do the same thing again but with Frisk instead of Chara.
So what does this mean? It means that Ralseis arc will be a continuation of Asriels from Undertale.
I mean, hey, Toby DID say there would be some connections between the two universes.
TL;DR
In conclusion Ralsei is a titan because of his physical resemblance, foreshadowing of being a titan, similarities to Floweys backstory, and the fact that he’s experienced a roaring before.

I wanna hear about the Ink boys!!! :D
ANON I AM HUGGING U RIGHT NOW. I LOVE YOU. THANK YOU.
So these guys are the in the chillest stories I wrote (and pretty much the only ones I can talk about without spoilering). The deepest is the "Flowey" since, not seeing himself neither as a Flowey or a Asriel he changed his name to Delta and trying to figure out what type of person he wants to be! Speedran middle age crisis/j
There are other characters too! I will have to finish their references and will talk about them!
Alphys is really smart and cool, she is like UT! Alphys without the anxiety and self doubt, but she rather watch aus like they were animes or just enjoys vibing in her house instead of just causing havoc like Papyrus or Chara does.
Toriel doesn't have a weapon, she just "inkbends" like Katara's waterbending!
All of them are inspired over "artstyles" or materials to use while making art! Like Toriel is the Drip Painting, Asgore is the Calligraphy, Papyrus is the Spray Painting, Alphys is the Digital Painting, Mad Mew Mew is the Ceramic forming, Napstablook is Watercolor Painting(they were even meant to look like a brush themselves!)! Mettaton was meant to be the Modern Art where they experimented a lot and usually do "lazy things" this on purpose. Undyne was supposed to look like the typical edgy character samurai from a village of the animes😅 so I will probably redraw her soon and give her an "aesthetic" too.

The Best of the Worst: Five of Gaming’s Best-Written Villains
Thanos. Darth Vader. The Joker. It’s no secret that a story is often defined by their antagonist - when thinking of memorable characters, a lot of the time, you’ll think of the bad guy. Good villains can make or break a story, and the best-written baddies are usually the ones that last in people’s memories. Of course, not all memorable villains need to have complex backstories and motivations - Bowser’s just been kidnapping Peach over and over for 37 years and he’s practically the face of video game villains. While there’s nothing wrong with such one-dimensional antagonists, there are plenty of more complex, engaging gaming villains as well. I’ve assembled a small list of them here; this is hardly a comprehensive list, but by the end you’ll see just how interesting these gaming bad guys can be. Spoilers abound below!
Handsome Jack (Borderlands 2) “It’s cute that y’all think you’re the heroes of this little adventure, but you’re not. You’re bandits. You’re the bad guys, and I am the goddamn hero.” You can’t discuss interesting video game villains without talking about the psychopathic CEO himself, Borderlands’ Handsome Jack. He’s among the most infamous gaming antagonists in the world, and for good reason; his charming and entertaining persona mixed with his horrifically twisted actions make him a classic “love to hate” kind of character. His popularity even led to being the focus of an entire prequel game detailing his backstory and plenty of references throughout the rest of the franchise and beyond. While many villains tend to think their actions are justified and pretend they’re the “good guy”, Jack takes it a step further by being so deluded by his own incredible narcissism that he genuinely believes he’s the hero of Borderlands, and everyone in his way - including the actual protagonists, the playable Vault Hunters - are just filthy violent bandits. He thinks that summoning a godlike creature to commit mass genocide on a planetary scale is the heroic thing to do, and doesn’t think twice about imprisoning and enslaving his own daughter to further his goals! All these abhorrent actions are done with a smile on his face and constant jokes and petty threats, as though the main characters are barely worth taking seriously. Case in point: one of his most famous monologues is about him laughing himself silly while scooping a man’s eyes out with a spoon, all while mocking the player and telling them to just “let the hero win already”. Nice guy!
Flowey (UNDERTALE) “Did you think you were the only one with that power? The power to reshape the world, purely by your own determination. The ability to play God! The ability to SAVE.” If you had the power to quick-save and reload the real world like it was a video game, what would you do? Try to fix your mistakes and right wrongs, or wreak havoc before reloading and getting away with it without consequence? In UNDERTALE, the main antagonist Flowey shows just how terrifying it can be when a villain shares the same meta powers as the actual player. He initially seems friendly and harmless - the first character you meet, and he’s just a happy little flower, right? Well, it’s not long before he proves to be the most dangerous and sociopathic character in the game. He’s aware of the player saving and reloading, and calls you out on certain choices like saving other characters you’ve killed - or going back to kill characters you previously spared. Eventually he gains the power to save over the player’s file, deliberately crashing the game and saving over your own death just to show how helpless you (and any other video game character) are in the face of such power. Most of his backstory is only found in the game’s “evil” path, the Genocide Route, so to really learn about him you’ll need to prove that you’re even more twisted than he is…and he won’t let you forget about it in future playthroughs either.
Andrew Ryan (Bioshock) “In the end, what separates a man from a slave? Money? Power? No, a man chooses…a slave obeys.” “Would You Kindly” - a well-known phrase within the gaming community, one that accompanies a famous plot twist dropped by Andrew Ryan, one of the main antagonists of Bioshock. Throughout the game, the player is directed all over the fallen, violent city of Rapture by their “ally” Atlas, with no choice but to do exactly as he asks. This is pretty standard affair for linear story games, of course, but Bioshock gives this normally-ignored gaming rule a dark spin with just three simple words. Andrew Ryan, the creator and leader of Rapture, reveals at the end of the game that the player’s character, Jack, is actually brainwashed to respond to the phrase “would you kindly”, a phrase that up until then had simply seemed to be a quirk of Atlas’ speech pattern. Future playthroughs are given a completely different feel after this reveal, now that the player knows Atlas is actually manipulating them for the entire game. I chose Andrew Ryan as the antagonist to write about here instead of Atlas because he’s still ultimately the reason behind most of the game’s conflict, and his final scene is one of the most harrowing moments in the series. Shortly after revealing the player’s trigger phrase, he uses it against you - ordering you to run about his office in a cutscene, to really drive home how completely helpless you’ve actually been all game. After that, he even orders you to kill him! As the player whacks away at Ryan’s skull with his own golf club, it’s not so much a victory for the player as it is for Ryan, proving he was right all along: Jack, and in turn the player, is but a slave, with no choice but to obey. Keep that in mind next time you’re railroaded into following orders in any other story game…
Alister Azimuth (Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time) “You ask all these questions, ask yourself this: how relevant is the past when it can be changed? Your father would have said not very.” When a heroic character turns bad, it’s usually because their motivations have changed. They decide the villain is right, they decide whatever they’re fighting for isn’t worth it, that sort of thing. This isn’t the case for General Alister Azimuth, however; for the entirety of Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, Azimuth remains steadfast in his goals from start to finish, while it’s the main heroes Ratchet and Clank that change their minds. Azimuth is initially a mentor figure to Ratchet, and blames himself for the exile of their species, the Lombaxes. He and Ratchet work together to find the Great Clock, a massive time-keeping device at the centre of the universe (give or take fifty feet), with Azimuth intending to reverse the mistakes of his past and bring back the Lombaxes - including Ratchet’s lost family. When Ratchet & Clank learn that the Great Clock is not a time machine, and that tampering with it will have catastrophic consequences, they decide against Azimuth’s plan. Unfortunately, Azimuth is so focused and single-minded on his goal that he ignores the duo’s warnings, and when they try to stop him he turns against them at the end of the game. Azimuth is a very headstrong, reckless and aggressive character that believes he can brute-force his way through any issue - just like Ratchet was, before he met Clank all those years ago. Narrative foils often make for the most compelling villains! Ratchet likely would have ended up just like Azimuth had he not met Clank.
Lothar Rendain (Battleborn) “Don’t you see? We needn’t all perish! We can save something! What value is life that is already condemned? What are you fighting for?!” Doing whatever it takes to survive isn’t exactly an uncommon motivation - it’s a pretty basic demand of living, after all. When it’s the end of the universe as we know it and you take honour out of the question, however, it can lead to some not-so-heroic decisions. Battleborn brings us to a universe dying at the hands of the Varelsi, inter-dimensional horrors eating every star in space, and introduces Lothar Rendain: a battle-hardened military commander that has his species’ survival at the top of his priorities. So, what does he do in the face of seemingly unavoidable death? Make a deal with it, even at the cost of everything and everyone else in the universe. Rendain’s motivations are at least understandable - in his words, he’s “saving something instead of nothing”, and it may as well be his own people. It’s just a shame he goes about it in the most despicable fashion possible. He’s sided his forces with the Varelsi and turned on the rest of the surviving universe, aiding the Varelsi hordes in exchange for them ensuring his own species’ survival once the last light winks out. After thousands of years battling an apparently unstoppable foe, you’d probably be desperate to figure out a different solution too. Personality-wise, he stands out as a darkly serious villain compared to the more chaotic and gung-ho heroes, almost as if he was pulled from a different story entirely. He avoids all the usual mistakes of being the “bad guy” too; he doesn’t needlessly kill any underlings that fail him, he takes any advantage he can get in a fight (like siccing a dozen gigantic bosses on the heroes at once instead of playing fair), and he even gives them chances to join forces with him in the interest of saving his own troop’s numbers. All in all, he’s a cunning antagonist with reasonable motivations, yet still so completely irredeemable and evil that finally defeating him at the end is just as cathartic for the player as it is for the heroes of the game themselves.
All this goes to show that all the interesting motives and engaging characterisations doesn’t always make for a nice person. There’s hundreds of fascinating and memorable villains out there, far too many to fit in a single article. If you have any suggestions of engaging evil-doers that fit this list, feel free to let me know! Thanks for reading!
