have you read WHEN THE ANGELS LEFT THE OLD COUNTRY by sacha lamb? you should read when the angels left the old country by sacha lamb. every time i am forced to read something that sucks and is bad, i am compelled to perform a palate cleanser by reading something that rocks and is good instead, which is wtaltoc by sacha lamb. wtaltoc was written by someone who was like What if good omens were jewish, and transgender, and gay, and concerned with labor struggles in early 20th century new york

the book that i read in the last couple years that i've spent the most time thinking about in non-fandom-y ways is THE FOX WIFE by yangsze choo! REALLY interesting juicy characters and super fun setting (mostly china + japan in ~1910, very end of the qing dynasty / mid meiji era - so things are changing very rapidly in both countries in many ways). extremely compelling depiction of fox spirits! the author reads the audiobook herself which i found really pleasing and listenable

another total banger audiobook experience was RED RABBIT by alex grecian, read by john pirhalla - road trip horror in the old west (but like, relatively light horror). GREAT ensemble cast with extremely distinct voices (esp as read by pirhalla who does great accents), interesting and nuanced treatment of "magic is real" / "some of you mfers are just racist and misogynist"

Leaning back a little, Yeosang looked deep into your eyes. "I love you so much, my sweet Bluejay."

Hey phi! Long time no ask, but I’ve been following your blog as dutifully as ever. Your annual wrap-up posts are a major highlight of my year, and I always get antsy over the holidays waiting for them.

I was wondering—Did you know that both Kusakawa Takuya from Minato Shouji Coin Laundry and Kashiwagi Haru from Kimi ni wa Todokanai are both in a Japanese boy band called 超特急 / Bullet Train? Their most recent MV, Awa Awa, is really good, IMO, and they both get little chances to shine in it! You should check it out. Thought it was a fun little coincidence that you might enjoy, since I know you loved both series.

Also, wow, I’m super impressed by some of these recent BL series. My top 10 had very little change for a long while, and Cherry Blossoms after Winter sat as my only 10/10 series ever since it came out. But I watched Unknown and Love for Love’s Sake this past week and both joined it in the 10/10 club. Amazing series. (I also adjusted Semantic Error up from 9/10 to 10/10.)

In particular I feel like Unknown captured a lot of the vibes I loved from the original Addicted series that I love but rarely ever get in any other BLs, particularly both leads being fairly manly and even a bit dangerous, and the gritty reality of what life is like for people in poverty. It also both accurately portrayed the feeling of pining after someone you know you can’t have that I experienced in my own life, to the point of almost being difficult to watch in places, but also making the eventual coming together feel logical, and satisfying, and earned. Which is a HELL of a feat, IMO.

And Love for Love’s Sake was just an incredible high-concept BL like I never expected to see. Despite being the country that gave us Semantic Error and others, I wasn’t yet convinced that Korea were the ultimate masters of BL, especially given just how. freaking. much I love Thai BL. But I think Love for Love’s Sake finally put them on the throne for me. (Even if I think it both deserved a sweet lovemaking scene and at the very least, much better kissing than we got. I know they tried at the very end, but…well, let’s just say, they tried.)

If you have any recommendations for shows that are similar to either one, definitely let me know. I haven’t yet watched Our Dating Sim or The Eighth Sense (I know, I know, shame on me), so those are probably my next ones to hit, just sense they’ve gotten such great praise, but I’m open to other ideas.

Love for Love's Sake is super unique. The only one recently even kinda in that vein was Jazz for Two although you might like Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo (more in the Unknown style). And if you haven't yet try The 8th Sense.

For Unknown, hum. Nothing springs to mind. Sorry, stepbrothers is so rare. Especially this quality gritty. I mean, The On1y One, of course, but I can't recommend it because of the ending.

I don't really know what to say, bc this is probably one of those things that you have to experience yourself.

It's true that I saw Ateez in 2023 when they came for Kpoplux, but they performed only 5 songs, and besides, I barely knew them back then (I was going more for Shinee tbh).

So I was really excited to see them now bc they have become my favorite kpop group and I love them so much ❤️

I was a bit disappointed when they announced Barcelona and not Madrid, bc I wasn't sure I could go, but I HAD TO. My sister and I haven't really traveled that much on our own, but we've invested a lot to make this possible (I know people do this all the time, but this was the first time for us so yay 💪)

It truly was an experience. Like, I'm there and I'm not really believing that they're breathing the same air as me? Bc I'm used to them being these fantasy people that I only see on the internet if that makes sense.

One thing that I found "funny" is that people always say those things about seing Yeosang irl, like he's so beautiful in person (and I know he is, that's why he's my bias duh), but, for me it was Seonghwa. Like he has this presence, this charisma onstage, I couldn't get my eyes off him 😯😯 he's just something else idk

Another thing is that for a concert this long, it certainly didn't feel like it. I was having fun at all times, they're so funny and silly, and every song was just amazing.

And everything I was expecting (like Mingi-wonka or that Seonghwa performance with the feathers or the notes [which I thought it was always Wooyoung but this time was Yeosang]) they did it, so I was happy with that too 😊

On a side note, we had the chance to visit a different city which was cool. We also took the chance to visit some kpop stores from where we usually only can order online. One of them was like paradise, like I want to live there omg (I bought the 2 txt albums bc I wanted to buy something 😭 aaand they told you which member it was in that version, unlike other stores that want me to go with random 😒😒 and I can't have that bc I will end up with Hueningkai, the same way I ended up with San in the free pc at the concert).

I have a great article for you which will shed some light on G-Dragon and its impact. I referenced it in my analysis of Jimin's portfolio, but it's worth reading it in entirety.

It tackles the concept of masculinity and its various shapes in different GD works, including his photoshoots and what was achieved through that. If I remember correctly, the thesis was that as much as GD was pushing boundaries, he always kept things in balance through specific acts that ultimately helped him stay in a safe zone as well. Basically his act worked for everyone.

excited about girl group music in a way i haven't been in a very long time and wrote about some of my favorite bsides of the year for nothing other than my own amusement! very long so after the first one it's all under the cut but if u read my ramblings i would love to hear ur faves from this year as well !!

this was nmixx's year. glad to shake off my initial dislike of them- it feels like they've finally hit their stride and i am seriously impressed. they gel so well as unit and there r genuinely no weak links in their lineup (go watch their tiny desk korea set now!) really like both the albums they put out but this bside/pre-release is the standout for me. lily goes insane in this, and i have a soft spot for any signs of fiddle / country influence in kpop because it's so rare (i earnestly think there should be more of it). it's weird with a point instead of being disjointed for the sake of it, and it works! we love you nmixx - probably the gg i feel most invested in right now

oh what a pleasant lovely gorgeous surprise to enjoy this album so entirely. i think loossemble's post ot12 identity as a group has been maybe the hardest to parse out, and with this release they really shine. this song has everything - bouncy chorus, chanty post-chorus, fun little one-off rap lines, some really delicate and pretty vocal parts, a BRIDGE. hyunjin fits perfectly into the main vocal slot with a level of performance i can't believe was hidden away from us for years. loossemble works so well as a group, and you can see plainly how they enjoy this new chapter. my babies forever and ever, excited to see what they do next.

might be album of the year- it's for sure the most cohesive as a single unit. stays true to the kinds of sounds and textures that longtime fans will find familiar, and tries some cool new stuff as well. i'm not a huge fan of a lot of the stuff regarding it's rollout, and i genuinely think the virtual angel music video ruined any real impact the song could've had, but the actual music makes up for it. i could've chosen almost any song, but sparkle is my favorite. it just itches my brain in the perfect way, and i loveeee girl group music that sounds glittery and fizzy. their voices together and the amount of layering is heavenly. i think artms has a really strong musical identity established in just one album, and i'm ready to see what they're able to do.

i like an aespa bside !!!!!!!! the day has arrived. aespa are no doubt the group of the year- the success they've seen (off an insane song like supernova, no less) is unprecedented for them and for sm as a company as well. i've been a critic of them in the past, but like nmixx, i think they've really come into their own in the past year on the title track end of things. their albums have been pretty spotty in terms of consistency and quality- i'm not sure where the disconnect on their team is. their latest, whiplash, is absolutely a step in the right direction, and flowers is the standout. aespa should make rnb forever and ever, it suits them so well. i like my aespa music with a slightly darker tone, and delivers. ning ning and winter kill it on this, and karina and giselle (i am also surpised) pull their weight as well.

is this my song of the year? it really, really might be. i haven't kept up much with billlie, and i'm so glad this didn't slip through the cracks for me. trampoline is addicting. it's such a complete feeling song, truly one of the highest compliments i can think of in today’s 2:20 minute no bridge no post chorus musical climate. every element is interesting enough to both stand on its own and work in tandem - vocals, rap, scatting, chanting, etc. an OUTRO after the final chorus (which is my favorite thing that songs never do enough). the mini album as a whole is incredibly solid as well- it has a groovier, slightly more mature gwsn-esque sound that i haven't heard in kpop in what feels like a long time. we love u billlie, i Will be seated for the next release.

"Form of" wasn't the right word to express what I mean because RPF is an extremely nuanced thing, but I do believe that there are things you do not do that do not get discussed much? I do believe that the majority of RPF creators value their RPs comfort and safety, but I'm really not sure about how to adequately balance keeping a celeb comfortable and having harmless fun.

What should we do when underaged celebs beg their fans to stop writing smut about them and their friends? What about deceased celebrities? How do we prevent RPF content from popping up during a celeb's next job application's background check or a familly member's curious Google search of their name? What about the ethics of editing content of those celebs/deepfaking to make explicit content of them? How do we ensure that celebs can avoid RPF content of themselves easily? What about underaged celebs overall? Etc... those are all conversations that I wish I could see happening more.

Anon... I know I haven't mentioned it lately, but I'm very up front about having helped write the AO3 TOS and that I was the one who brought up the absolute plague of Gillian Anderson snuff fic on Usenet in the 90s.

It was explicitly considered and is something AO3 will defend as part of its mission. We don't talk about it incessantly because we had those conversations a long time ago.

My personal view is that if they're kpop stars, who cares, and if they're youtubers, just archive lock your fic.

tbh i got into itzy sort of by chance/randomly? bit of a long/weird story lol...

i've listened to kpop on and off for a long time but never really Got Into It in a stan way (when i was in college i definitely had (and still have) a ton of blackpink on my gym playlist, and i always really liked mamamoo, but i wasn't really paying attention to kpop culture at all or any content beyond the music itself). probably the closest i ever got was bigbang, and that was only because of my massive crush on taeyang :P

i'm in the last year of my phd program right now (if i'm able to finish my dissertation by the end of june, i'll defend and graduate in july! dr. link!!), and from what i saw in my time in grad school i knew the last year basically drove every phd student completely insane.

instead of trying to curb that insanity by becoming a mildly functional alcoholic or smoking too much weed i basically decided i'd funnel that insanity into FINALLY trying to understand kpop beyond casually listening to it, like understand the culture and the standom and the whole thing.

i knew i needed to pick a group to stan in order to do that, and i didn't want it to be blackpink even though i like them, since they release music so rarely (lol). so i was like ok you know what i haven't really listened to any kpop after 3rd gen. lemme see what 4th gen has to offer!

none of the 4th gen boy groups really caught my interest in a serious way (though i do really like some songs by stray kids and enhypen), so i turned to 4th gen gg. and like. holy shit 4th gen is literally the girl group golden age???

i was sort of listening around to some of the different 4th gen gg and really enjoying them, trying to find the right one for me, and then itzy's none of my business mv came up on my recommended on youtube, and i'd seen their name around. i clicked and...well. i was hooked.

i watched a bunch of the classic mvs (dalla dalla, wannabe, mafia), that one clip of lia singing can't take my eyes off of you, and like one compilation of OT5 being silly and chaotic. after that it was game over, i knew i'd found my group.

(and also i kinda love an underdog story; i think itzy's supposed "fall off" has been greatly exaggerated and with the overhaul of div 2 employees (...hopefully the marketing team) i am curious to see if they can recapture the 4th gen gg crown)

i wasn't at all expecting to write fic, tbh, especially not for a kpop group! i've actually never done it before, except maybe once when i was 13 and then immediately regretted it because i was bad at it lol. but in one of the most stressful years of my life, it became a really nice creative outlet for me, especially because i don't really have anyone irl to talk to when it comes to kpop and itzy.

in general, i've found midzys to be such a warm, welcoming group, at least here on tumblr and in the comment section on AO3 (i try to stay off twitter as much as possible).

and i didn't realize initially when i first stanned itzy, but turns out the whole jyp fam is really awesome! obviously the company has its issues, like any kpop company, but in general the jyp Vibes are really fun, and i've enjoyed listening more and learning about twice, skz, nmixx, etc.!

since my original goal (i guess?) was to understand the world of kpop, itzy ended up being the perfect group because, well. they have done almost every sub-genre of kpop at some point. they really can do it all! and as a group they've been on top, they've had their name raked through the mud, they've had a member on hiatus (...literally announced right after i decided to stan, RIP), been in a big transition period...

yeah man idk. it's been so interesting and fun to follow their journey, learn a lot about the kpop machine, do some really fun creative writing, give in to the insanity of being a stan, and listen to some really great music along the way. :)

omg what a fun question thank you <3 this got like. really really long so it's going under the cut but i'm excluding the obvious hits like reboot / pink tape / obsession / the red / mttm enough has been said about all of them but every single one was also an alltimer to me obviously

i also liked stunner and overall it's the better album #ToMe but obviously i haven't seen associated pb and etc yet... as far as title track visuals go though tbh i think i prefer nightwalker it was a lot of fun!! i'm a big sucker for dual selves style concepts it's part of why i vibed so hard with j too 😭 alongside the choreo the direction was lovelyyy

specifically thinking about the co-merawork he did--i think ten's at his best when he's embracing drama & it really worked in his favour here esp paired with the simple fit. im getting off track sorry i also liked the mv a lot i loooved the colouring choices they made (i like blues!) & the use of space on set was really fun too... like the simultaneous sense of emptiness + clutter was sooo nice

speaking of blues + wayv (members) i DID like phantom a lot i thought it was very cohesive w the sound of the album & i think wayv would be best off if they returned to the sort of theatric/operatic visuals + music they used to have as a #Brand butttt i visually prefer on my youth i think it's one of my fave recent-ish concepts... i think it really sold the melancholic nostalgia they were going for without tying them too much to a specific time period? (though the visuals for alltime hit poppin love were def meant to evoke late 90s/early 00s boyband realness Which I Also Think They Should Do Again). styling was a bit quirky but it just added to it imo.. i cannot support the schoolboy outfits though they were doing the nostalgia thing fine without it

tho my fave visuals for an album would go to i think 28 reasons.. the teasers had me going craazyyy i ended up expecting too much from the music as a result 😭 i love horror concepts a lot but i think with bad staging or costuming they often cross the line into unintended campiness. no such issue with 28 reasons. i think abt these 3 all the time the feeling of being observed/doing the observing + being trapped vs breaking free but not quite...! and the composition of pic 3 is incredible to me

speaking of being watched & doing the watching i think someone on here recently said that taemin's visuals are consistently abt making you feel like a pervert for looking at him which is always really interesting for entertainers (human products, essentially) & ties in so well with themes he likes to explore thru his art But i actually don't find his albums especially interesting visually it's all in the music + unmatched choreo #ToMe. that being said want is one of my favourite kpop mvs ever i could write essays on it im serious. alltimer catholic realness ofc but what i always found fun was how often he's obscured + how much we Don't get to see even as he reveals it all thru choreo shots. super cool i could rewatch a billion

i do not like ksoo's music at all and i've been pretty open about that but i think given how lacking the music is expectation was a very smart play 😭 the highlight medley being a short film fit really well with him being known as The Idol Actor and i'm a sucker for wkw inspiration... some of those comps were super cute too i loved the ones in the room. so cosy... & some of the colouring choices were lovely too. tho i will fully admit a lot of my fondness for the visuals is bc he's beautiful </3
