Okay, the title of the song Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas sounds SO condescending. It's the "little". Here are some Jane Austen characters to help me demonstrate:

Is divorced!Prowl the cop who always works Christmas Eve so the other cops can be home with their families, or is Prowl the cop who won't trade shifts on Christmas Eve even though all he's going to do is stare at the tv until he falls asleep?

By the time he's divorced (figuratively), Prowl's of an age and rank that he can pick and choose his holidays without worrying how it might affect his colleagues. But young Prowl-- young Prowl worked Christmas eve for the sheer joy of it. Nothing gave him greater pleasure than having the office to himself after everyone else had gone home or off to parties. Finally, he could really get some work done! It didn't occur to him to feel lonely or left of out; half the time, he wouldn't even notice that Christmas eve had nudged into Christmas morning until the night sky began to lighten. It wasn't until after CD that these solitary yuletides began to lose their savour. Fresh emotions assaulted him; he became sentimental, lonely, nostalgic, bitter. One year he attempted to go home to family-- disaster. On others he tried to work but found himself brooding at windows. So, yes, now he is that guy who takes the holiday but stares at the television until he falls asleep, usually with Green perched on or near him, pilfering the nut bowl.
