I’m making it canon that Soap was actually raised in a big fucking family and I mean big, from my understanding there’s a good size Catholic community in Scotland, also was raised by two parents who are absolutely in love with each other and thus enters you. Soap makes it his damn mission to not only knock you up if you are a person with a uterus but he’s got the biggest breeding kink I’ve ever seen and just the thought of this fucking beefy man, absolutely destroying you just to create, what’s in his head, a perfect little family ughhhhh makes me sweat and cry and puke and drool!
I agree with the first part 💯! And I'm going to do a bit of a self plug here.
My fic First Flight of the Scottish Hawk breaks down the dynamics of the MacTavish household.
He has two sisters, three brothers, and two parents who absolutely adore him.
I won't lie, I could gush so much about this. I have a special place in my heart for this fic. But I don't want to bore anyone with that.
From here we move onto the baby making factory that is John 'Soap' MacTavish.
Just a bit of NSFW under the cut...
--
Once you and Johnny decide it's time to add to your own family, you'll be hard pressed to have a moment of peace to yourself.
Man's on you like clockwork. The menace even has an app that follows your cycle. Knows exactly when you're most fertile and will bury himself so many times into your aching cunt that you'll be nothing by a babbling mess by the end.
He desires nothing more than to see you heavy with his child. Watching as your overly plump belly moves with the next generation of his family name. And he'll put as many mini MacTavish's in you as you so let him.
--
Now, I'm going to go onto the side of the spectrum because I am of this ideal. And I know I'm not the only one who stands here.
Johnny is a man who has nothing but respect for his lover. He may have a breeding kink like no other, but if the one he loves does not desire to have children, then he's still game.
Adoption is always an option. And it doesn't always have to be children.
You want to raise a family of Scottish deranged huskies. He's in.
Maybe become the resident cat household that welcomes all those felines who were cast away and forgotten by previous families? Soap's got two cat condos in his Amazon cart and ready to purchase an overpriced cat tree.
How about a farm with a family of goats, cows, a miniature horse, and a donkey? He's already signed the mortgage for a plot of land nestled in the country.
The point is that Johnny loves who he loves. Whether they want a family of mini MacTavish's or to run a sanctuary that puts the local zoo to shame.
Johnny boy will stick with you thick and thin. And you wouldn't have it any other way.

I really love how you write pets in Progression. VegasPete got their cats and Nam has Phoenix. Now Chay found love of his life, Koda:D. I really hope Kim will meet with his cat soon. I wonder about the pet dynamic now. Will Phoenix accept Koda or is he already jealous? What will Phoenix and Koda do once Kim's soulmate cat appears? I adore this fic and the way you incorporated pets into it. Arm should get Khun new fish too. Now KinnPorsche should get some pet as well. Maybe bunny (I can't get that photoshoot picture of Mile with white bunny out of my head for some reason). So Kinn would look really cute with bunny and Porsche would match its energy.
I'm so glad you like the pets! I know we only see them occasionally, but Vegas and Khun are canonically animal lovers to some extent, and Kim might be too, considering he has included cats in multiple music videos. It felt important to add them to the lives of the ensemble. 😃
I think it would be great if each character (or couple) got a pet before the story's end. I will say Kim's kitty is going to make her first official appearance in the next couple of chapters, and she does have kittens. So they will need to find homes - preferably with close friends or people living in the compound.
Khun does still have the fish Kinn promised him and purchased for him after Elizabeth and Sebastian died. While they don't fill the hole his two beloved carp left, he does still find solace feeding the fish and spending time with them. In fact, Khun, Arm, and Pol would take Nam on walks around the grounds to go feed them and sit by the pond. 🙂
Oooh, a bunny for Kinn could be fun! I never thought about that possibility for him. During chapter 27, I do mention him having a bird as a kid, one who belonged to his maternal grandmother he inherited and happened to die suddenly of old age the day Kinn was assaulted by Douglas. 😔 I thought of maybe him and Nam bonding over their love of birds and building a nice and secure enclosure to get a couple.
As for the current pets, I think the dynamics are as follows:
Phoenix - for the most part - is very loyal to Nam. He can be extremely playful due to his age, but is an old soul. He is younger than Koda, but feels like he is much wiser. He doesn't hate him, but he is still adjusting to not being the only furbaby and sometimes finds Koda to be a bit goofy and mindless. However, they are slowly bonding and Koda really wants to be his friend when he's not focused on his new dads. Koda is the type of dog who needs regular cuddles, interaction, and care. He wants to be friends with everyone. While Phoenix is friendly as well, there is a more noticeable hierarchy in his favorite people, with Nam being on the first tier, Kim and Chay being on the second tier, Porsche being on the third (although he is on thin ice after saying Koda is more fun than him), and Khun, Arm, Kinn, and Pol being on the fourth tiers. He is friendly acquaintances with the cousins now that he's made a couple of trips to see them, and will become closer with Arm's sisters and nieces once the move in.
Koda definitely ranks Chay as his highest friend, with Kim being a close second. Porsche and Nam rank next, and the other allies in and outside the compound are those he also loves dearly, but those are his top four. He also enjoys visiting several guards and is actually okay with Korn, but doesn't love the tension that seems to pop up whenever he enters a room.
I think Kim's cat and Phoenix might already know each other. They were in the same park. I don't think he is her child, but he might be a nephew. If she moves into the compound, they will become close. I think she will be iffy around the dog first, but will take Kim's, word for it when he tells her she can trust him and they will become good friends. 🩵
As for Pittsburgh & Valencia (VP's cats) - while full blooded siblings from the same litter - Valencia definitely manipulates Pittsburgh for her own amusement and gain sometimes. She loves him, but she also takes after one of her human fathers. Vegas is also the one she is more drawn towards. Pittsburgh is a loveable and playful boy who loves everyone, but is closer with Pete. He really enjoys when Phoenix, Koda, and Lucy (Fern's dog) visit, while Valencia hangs back more. Macau thinks Valencia is sort of a bitch and Pittsburgh is sort of a doofus, but loves them both equally lol.
Thank you for the ask!

Matchup for @doctorgerth
Here’s my info for ya, Hazel! - 23 - Heterosexual, into men! - INFJ - Cancer - Shoulder length light brown hair, dark green eyes, 5’9”, on the thick/curvy side - I’m assuming this is clothing? I’m usually a comfy cute/casual kinda style! Like shorts and a T-shirt or skinny jeans and a cute top! I wear baseball caps a lot when I’m too lazy to do anything with my hair lol - hobbies include writing (obviously lol), playing with my kitties, traveling, and watching cooking shows! interests include traveling (I just love going places), nature, animals, children, and eating! 😂 - uhhhh I have two cats lol and I can play clarinet - favorite food is pasta for sure, more specifically an Alfredo. my favorite color is light blue/pastel colors. my favorite animals include cats, foxes, and whale sharks! - I’m terribly afraid of heights and spiders. Also I’m a big people pleaser so I’m scared of letting people down. Though I’m going to be a teacher, I’m actually quite scared of speaking to large crowds lol little kids don’t bother me, but talking to a large crowd of people my age or older, yeah I don’t like that. I’ll do it if I have to of course, but not without internally panicking lol - My dream is actually in the works as I am becoming a teacher!! Other than this, I want to travel as much as possible while I can. If I can’t go out of the country, my dream is to visit all states in the continental US!! After getting everything I want to do done, I want to settle down somewhere, continue to teach, and have a family. ❤️ - As for extra stuff...as you can probably tell, I can be a bit overly emotional and sensitive, but that makes me very empathetic and loving! Introverted where I do like alone time but not to the point where I always want to be home by myself. I also love adventures like kayaking, or going to museums/zoos/aquariums, theme parks, or just traveling and experiencing new places! Very into stargazing and astronomy. I also love being on or near the water! I’m not the best at making friends just because I'm a lil awkward and anxious around new people. I prefer my small clique over having lots of friends, but I’m always friendly to strangers/others as long as they are friendly to me! I am definitely the mom of my friends, making sure they’re always safe, sound, and happy. People tend to compliment me on the fact that I’m easy to talk to. I may not ever have the best advice, but I am always willing to listen to someone vent, rant, or just talk about their feelings! I live for small get togethers with friends rather than large parties. I’m pretty low-maintenance, so I never expect fancy dates or expensive gifts! I’m always down for staying at home with movies and home-made dinners! Total cat mom, I love my and all fur babies. I’m also studying to be an elementary teacher so I love little kids! Big big heart for animals and children! All in all, I’m a really laid back person who loves deep, personal connections with people, and also my alone time every now and then! I tend to fall in love pretty easily and thus get my feelings hurt just as easy lol but when I fall in love I always fall head first, full force to make sure my s/o is happy! I definitely put my all when it comes to love in relationships. My love language is physical touch so my man (and friends to an extent) should expect lots of physical affection from me!! Kisses, hugs, cuddles, all of it! SOOOO excited for get a matchup from you, my darling!! Thank you for the opportunity! 💖
Tumblr media
aaaa Coop! I am super hyped for this, I hope you like your match, I always love the wonderful ones you do 🐵! Although I will always ship Cooler, for a more realistic relationship I match you with...
OTP:  Marco The Phoenix
Tumblr media
Marco, as a pirate, is super adventurous, ready to take you on all sorts of adventures. But after all is seen and most adventures lived, he’s just as much ready to just settle down, start a family, whether it be furbabies, adopted kids or of your own. He takes after his pops, kids are definitely on the list!
You take care of him whenever he works too long and forgets to eat or sleep, he takes care of you whenever you feel like you need to unwind. Since you’re both easy to talk to and share the same kind of energy, you can just unwind by talking with each other, cuddling on the couch or in bed while you just relay your days onto each other, neither of you feeling like you’re unloading.
You surprise each other with small tokens of appreciation, such as homemade lunches with sweet notes, surprise visits whenever you thought the other one was working. You never go sleep without saying goodnight, and never leave without saying good morning, even if its just a kiss on the forehead of whoever is sleeping.
There are barely any fights or arguments. You both have certain maturity and know how to communicate with people. Whenever something does go wrong, you can settle for a mature discussion and even agree to disagree whenever it’s not a deal breaker. Willing to make compromises and working towards personal growth makes this relationship stable and healthy, even after the honeymoon phase is over, you still stay deeply in love, just because you connect so well.
Since you’re both busy working, you respect each other’s alone time and privacy, but at the same time plan in moments that are meant for just the two of you. Whether it’s actual dates (hiking trip, visiting a cool island nearby, walks on the beach, visiting your favorite restaurant or bar) or just spending a quiet evening at home where you both temporarily forget about work and enjoy each other’s presence and company. It’s the best way to keep your stress level down, and establishes healthy communication and best of all, makes sure that you’re never too long without stolen kisses, nice cuddles and all other physical touches you need to feel completely relaxed and happy!
Tumblr media
Runner up:  X Drake
Tumblr media
There are quite the few places where X Drake checks off all the marks you need: adventurous, love for animals, stargazing while being able to tell you all the names of the stars and constellations that you can see that day, a certain maturity... You could make quite the good couple!
With Drake, most of your time would be spent outside, he doesn’t like being holed up too much. Hiking, being at sea, nightly walks under the night sky, walks around town, discovering new islands and doing some exploring... those will be your most frequent dates.
Drake is honest and straightforward, no beating around the bush. He respects you, your needs and your personal space and will do everything in his power to make sure you are happy and comfortable even in the most difficult times. Those are bound to happen because of his lifestyle, but he will do his best to make sure you won’t suffer under it.
why he is not your number one: Drake is.... not used to physical affection, to give a bit of an understatement. He gets flustered too easily and will tend to push you away, especially in public, but even in private he can get overwhelmed. Unfortunately, it may take a little too much time to get him used to your love language, you need someway to let out all that love!
Tumblr media
BrOTP: Bepo
Tumblr media
A little bit of an unusual friendship match, but Bepo and you have just the right amount of vibes in common to work out as great buddies! Both a little on the sensitive and softer side, you both are 100% there for each other when the other feels a little down or self-conscious. Comfort bear hugs? Incoming!
Bepo and you can spend hours doing whatever activity you feel like doing, mostly something semi-active to keep both your minds and bodies occupied, while you each talk about your friends, your families and crews. You help him feel a little more confident in his abilities, and both of you are amazing in helping each other out when someone has come to you for advice but you need an outsider’s perspective.
Even though you cannot spend an insane amount of time together generally because Bepo will 100% follow Law and wherever he goes, the moments you are able to meet up and catch up are worth it so much. It’s like your social batteries get reset, and you’re ready to take on everything in your life that was bothering you once again!

Here.
01. Do you consider yourself a goal-oriented person? Do you find it difficult to commit to doing things if there’s no achievable end goal? I am a very goal-oriented person. I do find it difficult to commit to something if there isn’t an end goal.  02. What’s a habit your friend or significant other has that you find annoying? When I was with Carter the amount of liquor he consumed bothered me.  03. Do you believe in the idea that everyone has a “purpose”? If so, what do you think your “purpose” is, or do you think you’ve even found it yet? Nope. I think that life is far simpler than that.  04. When was the last time you tried to talk someone out of doing something? Were you successful? If not, what ended up happening? I am always talking people out of doing things. Sometimes I’m successful, more often than not I fail and then the person will reflect and ask themselves why they didn’t just follow the advice I had given.
05. Do you consider yourself an independent person? In what ways are you independent and in what ways could you be more so? I am independent in that I live on my own, I pay my bills, and I’m responsible for things like my student loans and keeping my furbabies alive. I am dependent in that I have access to my dad’s credit card which I often use for gas and groceries.
06. Have you ever named a pet after a famous person? No.
07. Do you feel uncomfortable going to the movies by yourself? No.  08. Do you like doing other things while watching TV, or do you dedicate your attention solely to what you’re watching? I never pay full attention to anything. I’m riddled with ADHD and I can’t just watch TV I have to also be scrolling through social media or playing a word game.  09. Have you ever sleepwalked? Yes. 10. When was the last time you mistook someone for someone else? At what point did you realize your mistake? It’s been a while I suppose.  11. Do you generally enjoy school? What aspects specifically do you enjoy? Yes. I like learning and challenging my thoughts and beliefs.  12. When thinking about your dream home, what do you think would be your favorite thing to shop for? I have literally no idea. Sounds overwhelming.  13. If you use Spotify, go here and list your top artists for the short term (past four weeks). I don’t.  14. Do you ever listen to those lo-fi hip hop/study music playlists on YouTube/Spotify? No. 15. Have any particular national/global events had serious impacts on your values, life outlook, etc., whether they’ve directly affected you or not? Well of course. Disaster is where the encompassing character of society is tested.  16. Do you think you are capable of being attracted to someone based on looks alone, or must there be something else about them that attracts you? No, I can find someone appealing to look at but in order for me to find them attractive it has to be a more well rounded system that includes their interests, their habits, their communication style, etc.  17. Are you likelier to work harder if you’re being paid? If not, what drives you to give your best effort? I think I’m more likely to work hard if I’m feeling as though my efforts are appreciated and noticed.  18. On social media, do most of your followers/people you follow tend to be of a certain gender? Do you purposefully surround yourself with one gender more than another? No.  19. Are you interesting in owning a home? What aspects of homeownership would you enjoy most? I would like to own a home only so that I could install a pole and a yoga silk so I can do my pole workouts and aerial yoga from my home.  20. Does the fashion sense of a potential partner matter to you? Only in that I won’t date anyone who looks like garbage. Clean clothing that isn’t falling apart... that all I ask for. Also... no fucking stupid hats. Baseball caps are fine,in the winter wear a beanie, but for fucks sake leave the newsies hats and fedoras behind.  21. If you had to give up every entertainment medium but one, which would you keep and why? I’d keep books because reading is good for the brain.  22. Is there anything that you prefer to write down rather than type? I’m sure there is.  23. If you download/torrent things, do you remember the first thing you ever torrented? No idea.. but I used teddyshare.

20 questions with Dr Ferox #1
Greeting Vetlings. This post is an attempt to chew through some of the many, many questions I have received over the last 2 months without spamming you with two dozen mini post. These questions are in no particular order, and I’ve tagged the asker if I know who it is. If you’re waiting for a question to be answered, it might be below.
@surskitty asked: What are your favorite marsupials?
Well, I certainly have lots to chose from, but I’m particularly fond of the carnivorous ones. Numbats, Quolls and Tassie Devils will always be special to me, but I really like the extinct Thylacine and Thylacaleo too.
Anonymous asked: Hey so theres this theory that giving extremely dark chocolate in small amounts to a rat is helpful with the chronic respiratory issues endemic to rats bc of mycoplasma. What do you think about the accuracy of that scientifically? I came for the vet cases/ funny stories, stayed for both!
I can’t say I’ve used it, but it’s not a standard recommendation. Rats being generalists may be able to handle the theobromine in chocolate better than small carnivores but I can’t find any solid data on it. Small amounts in moderation are probably ok.
Another Anonymous asked: Hi dr. Ferox, I'm planning on getting a gecko this July so that I have plenty of time to get set up and do even more research on them. One of the things that I'm curious about is if you would consider it a good idea to call around and ask some of the vets that I'm considering taking my gecko to see their level of familiarity and comfort with treating reptiles like geckos?  If so then what are some other things that I should ask them about? Thanks in advance!
It’s definitely a good idea to call around and ask who is comfortable treating geckos, or any exotic pet. Most clinics will know who the local exotics vets are and are happy to refer such patients on. It would also be a good idea to ask which emergency clinics are set up for reptile patients, as some will have better setups than others. You should also ask how much you should budget for routine care and how often they recommend that species comes in for a checkup.
@zaryaisbae asked: I have an old Russian Blue (around 13ish, he's 100% indoors and declawed (adopted him that way) and probably a little overweight. He still seems to get around really well, and occasionally plays with the younger kitten we have. Given adequate care and accommodation, how many years would an average case like him have left? (Came for the rant on time sensitive questions, stayed for the excellent veterinary information)
Russian Blue cats can do old age quite well, for a relatively uncommon cat I’ve seen a few reach 18 years of age. I would recommend regular blood or urine tests for my patients of this age as early detected of kidney disease and hyperthyroidism can help them live longer.
Anonymous asked: I might be adopting a little doggy soon!!! She's a sweet australian shepherd/ spaniel cross and I love her. She'll likely become my service dog, but she's currently being treated for heartworm. Are there any long lasting effects of heartworms? Could it be recurring?
Dogs can certainly be re-infected with heartworm even after they’ve been treated for an infection. It’s important that dogs stay on preventatives as recommended by your local vet, they’re most likely to know what’s working well in your area. Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes so your dog doesn’t even need to come into contact with other dogs to get them. It is possible for heartworm infection to cause permanent damage to the heart or blood vessels, but this will likely depend on how severe the infection is. Once a dog is treated they may show no ill effects from the previous infection.
@petitevetoespagnole asked: Recently I realize that the idea of what a cat has to eat change a lot between countries. I know mostly it's because I work in a rural environment and I'm good as long as my French cats have cat food (and I'm happy if it's actually the type of cat food they need) but I thought it could be interesting to know what's your experience on this.
Emotion is a significant factor in what and how people feed their pets. Cats are more or less the same everywhere but how they are valued and perceived by society will differ. For some a cat will be their furbaby. For others a cat is ‘just a cat’.
@doctorrichardstrand asked: question tax: came for the breed analyses, stayed for the mythical creature analyses. we recently found out my miniature schnauzer has an abdominal tumor. we're not sure yet if it's benign or cancerous, nor where it is actually coming from. i was wondering what the rate of cancer is in miniature schnauzers? i had thought it was fairly low.
Well, just because a breed doesn’t have a reputation for cancers doesn’t mean they can’t get them. They don’s seem to commonly get them, but it’s still possible. Overall the rate of cancer in dogs (not including benign lumps like lipomas) seems to be approximately 30%.
Yet another Anomymous asked: Do you see many Manchester terriers in Australia? What do you think of them if you've worked with them before
Not enough to write anything meaningful about them, I’m afraid.
A presumably different Anonymous asked: I've heard mixed things from vets about mixing Baytril with baby food etc so my rats are more willing to take it. Some vets have recommended it but other vets have said it's unwise. (I've avoided mixing it just to be safe.) Is this a controversial thing in the vet community and why is it advised you don't mix it?
I think it’s more a matter of being confident the rat has eaten the entire dose. The local exotics vets often use a particular brand of sweetened syrup to mix with baytril for rats and parrots. I don’t think it’s a controversial thing, so long as you can be confident the rat is getting the dose.
@its-animalcrazy-love asked: Hello! Do you now where I can learn to read a blood sample and other kind of lab tests?
Well the vet course in the obvious answer. Certain text books about clinical pathology will have quick summaries. Certain medicine text books (Ettinger?) had charts on the inside covers for quick reference and the 5 Minute Veterinary Guide has reference ranges for just about everything in an appendix at the back. However knowing the reference ranges wont help you if you don’t understand why something is abnormal and what it means for the patient.
Anonymous asked: So noses don't tell anything but what about how soft the fur is? I've always heard that for cats, if their hair is soft and smooth, they're pretty healthy. Is there anything to that?
Not really. If the fur is soft and smooth it tells you that the fur is soft and smooth. Certain disease processes will cause changes to the coat and skin, but these typically take weeks or months to manifest and are not helpful for determining whether a pet is sick today.
@mackthebulldog said: The obsessive foot licking My dog does like crazy. I bring it up almost ever time I'm at the vet(I've seen 3 for it). It's so bad his paws will get like hairy almost because he's breaking down the paw. One vet put him on this medicine to try to help thinking he was licking because it was a bit inflamed and red. When it went away he still did. It's so frustrating. When he comes in I wipe his paws and put socks on when he licks too much. They think he's OCD, any advice on how to curb this behavior
Generally pets are licking due to itch, pain or psychological reasons like stress. Obsessive compulsive behavior is rare but does occur. We can’t ask a dog how it’s feeling, so typically need to treat any possible skin pathology, allergy or nail bed infection (yeast being very common) before we commit to a trial of behavior modifying mediation (like anti-depressants or anxiolytics). Covering up or blocking the dog from licking doesn’t necessarily help because it doesn’t address the reason for the behavior, and if you block an obsessive dog from performing its behavior it will often become distressed. Distraction toys or puzzle feeders can help, but most of these dogs need medical intervention of some sort.
An additional Anonymous asked: Do you do much work with wildlife? In the US, it seems like most people who work with wildlife are wildlife rehabilitators (who might be vets but usually aren't--it's a separate licensing process) or zoo vets, not general practice vets. (Although wildlife rehabbers usually have a vet that they work with, for medication and injuries and such--in my state, it's required that you have a vet who will work with you/see your animals--the majority of rehabilitation does not happen with the vet.)
General practices in Australia will typically triage wildlife, and some will treat them further. Wildlife carers often have preferred vets they will go to for anything other than first aid because those vets are more experienced or have better equipment for those species (or give good discounts). You’re not actually allowed to house a wild animal unless you are a licensed career or the animal is receiving direct veterinary treatment, and most vets are not also licensed carers. In my current jobs I will do some work with wildlife, including euthanizing those that are too mangled or sick, and sending the rest to a better facility. In my previous jobs I have done a lot more, particularly as one vet at my first job had a reputation for being the ‘raptor vet’ so we got to see a fair birds of prey. This is why I know they’re easier to handle with a sock over their head.
@gram-stained-paws said: Rookie vet asking a silly question: how much water should a dog and a cat drink per day and at what point should it be considered polydipsia? What guideline do you follow when you establish it? I've read so many different answers to this question and I would like to know your opinion.
There is possibly only one thing that counts as a silly question, and this was not it. Opinions will vary, and the answer will vary depending on the animal’s diet and how much water it’s ‘eating’. As a ballpark I call it polydipsia if a dog is drinking more than 100ml/kg/day or a cat drinking more than 50ml/kg/day, although if they’re getting close to this number I’m a bit suspicious and will recommend further testing. And unexpected increase in water intake may also count as polydipsia.
The eighth Anonymous (but certainly not the last) asked: As a vet, or as an animal person, or as someone who just seems really into weird and cool and strange biology (and dinosaurs) do you have any thoughts on Jack Horner and his chickenosaurus?
I think the chickenosaurus project is fascinating, but I’m not sure how far it will get off the ground. I doubt they’ll be able to completely reverse engineer a dinosaur-like animal out of a chicken embryo because some genetic information has likely been lost, but they will probably be able to get some dinosaur like traits. I’m waiting to see how long it will take before those chickens reach the pet market.
@what-will-they-do-next asked: Hi! I know the pyometra is a serious, life threatening condition for intact female dogs, and is caused by the infection of the uterus which causes it to fill up with pus and rupture causing septic shock. But what I don't really know is what usually causes the initial infection of the uterus in the first place. Could you explain that? Question Tax: came for the vet science, stayed for the personal stories of real life events.
Infection can enter the uterus and cause a pyometra in one of two ways. It can either reach the uterus via the blood stream (eg septicemia, bacteraemia secondary to rotten teeth) or from bacteria entering via the vagina. The second way is probably more common, increasingly so with the age of the dog, because a dog spends most of its time with its anus directly above its vulva when standing so gravity helps bring fecal contamination in where it shouldn’t be.
Anonymous asked: Do you have any experience with allerpet products? I'm curious to know if they actually work and wether or not they're actually healthy to use on a pet. Particularly a cat.
They talk a good talk, and probably don’t do any harm, but aren’t proven to be any more helpful than a regular pet shampoo. I do note they also recommend that after the allerpet product is applied, the cat should be dried and they suggest a hairdryer. You are welcome to tell me how washing the cat and drying it with a hair dryer works out.
@missnoodliness asked: Saw you treated pocket pets (rabbits and the like). 1st year vet student here wondering if you had any good texts you'd recommend, anatomical or otherwise.
I printed all my uni notes and had them bound. I also reference the BSAVA Manual of Rabbit Medicine and Surgery, and Ferret Husbandry, Medicine and Surgery by Lewington, 2nd edition. Keep in mind there are not nearly as many ‘exotic’ animals kept in Australia as there are in the USA. We don’t even have hamsters.
Definitely not the last Anonymous asked: Why do octopus' have ink sacs?
Because they do. Evolution doesn’t have a plan, it just runs with what works. A little bit of ink goes a long way in obscuring vision in the water so an octopus can escape or hide.
And the last Anonymous of the day asked: Hi Dr! What's your favourite animal? Mine are bears 😊
I have lots of favorite animals. I even have favorite parasites (demodex). I really can’t choose just one for you, but some of my favorites include fossa, whale shark, kookaburras, tawny frogmouths, foxes, ducks and just about every domestic species.

I admire your dog ownership so much! I am eight months away from having my own place and being able to adopt a dog for the first time - SO EXCITED! I will admit though, I'm really concerned with leaving my dog alone in the house while I work all day, to the point where I wonder if I shouldn't get a dog at all :( You are my dog-owner idol! Do you have any tips at all, or sources you went to for advice? Thank you!
Tumblr media
(leading off with my favourite Pepper grin)
Hi nonnie!  Thanks so, so much for your kind words, and congrats on moving closer to your new place!!  I absolutely hear you when it comes to your concerns about lifestyle: I’m going to be spending the first 4 months of the upcoming school year on the road and am trying to work out how we’re going to be making that work, and after next year (when I start residency) I’m sure I’m going to have to start hiring a dog walker or sending her to daycare a few times a week to make sure that she gets the exercise she needs.  Dog ownership is definitely hard work, especially if you’re doing it on your own, but at the same time I feel like if you really want to do it badly enough, you can be a good owner - it’s just a matter of making sure that you’re ready to put in the time and the finances to doing it right.
There are days now, already, when she is at home by herself for upwards of 12-15 hours at a time... but when they’re over, I always make sure to come home, put on her reflective vest and flashing collar, and either take her for a run or go out and play fetch with her for a while, no matter how exhausted I am.  And really, that’s a big part of the reason why I adopted her right before starting med school in the first place: she forces me to take time out, to be active and have fun, at least for a short period of time, every single day.  I really don’t have a social life outside of her - if I’m traveling somewhere it’s in driving distance and we’re staying somewhere dogs can stay, too.  If I’m going out, I’m looking around for dog friendly options and she’s coming with.  And it took a hell of a lot of socializing and training to get her to the point that that was possible, but it’s absolutely been worth it.
As for advice, I’m more than happy to offer my top tips, with the major caveat that this is really just what has worked for me.  I honestly think that I hit the absolute jackpot when it came to Pepper: she’s been so, so easy to train, since the day I got her, and we’re really in sync as far as activities go.   That said, here’s what I think were the most important things I did before adopting.
1.  Take a really long, honest look at why you want a dog.  Then research the hell out of breeds to make sure that you get one that fits those reasons.
If you’re going to be living in apartments and working a lot, and you’re just looking for a pet to hang out with while you’re home, then it would be best to look up lower-energy dogs.  As I said above, I wanted a running buddy who would keep me active and go for hikes and runs on weekends: otherwise I never would have gotten a dog as big or as energetic as Pep.  Yes, she spends the majority of her daytime hours chilling in my studio apartment - but we run 25-30 miles a week and spend at least one morning every weekend at the dog park... otherwise she would probably destroy all of my shit.  But seriously, look into the reasons you want a dog, be honest in considering the amount of activity you’ll be able to give it, and then pick a breed accordingly.  AKC.org has a fun little “what breed should I get” quiz, then also breaks down behaviors among different breeds if you want to do further reading.
2.  Try to meet the dog you’re interested in at least once before you commit to adopting
This is my low-key plug to adopting from a rescue, as well... but whether you go to a rescue or a breeder, try to stay local and try to meet the dog your interested in at least once or twice before adopting.  And by meet, I mean spend a good amount of time interacting with and watching him/her interact with other dogs and people.  I had Pepper for 2 afternoons before adopting her, first with her foster mom just meeting for the first time and second at a park.  For as helpful as breed research can be, dogs are still individuals, so interacting with the dog and seeing how it acts/plays is really important.  I knew I’d be living in apartments for at least the next 5 or 6 years, so it was important to me to find a dog that didn’t bark much.  Pepper ran around like a crazy woman at the dog park and only yipped once when we were too slow in getting her leash off to let her in: I knew then that we’d be good.
3.  Adopt during a slow work time.
When you first bring your new furbaby home it’s going to be stressful and exciting for both of you, even if you’re an absolutely perfect match.  If at all possible, try to work it out so that you’re adopting at a time when you can take a long weekend to get acclimated to each other.  For me, I adopted Pepper the month before school was going to start, and got involved in a research project that allowed me to work from home 3 days a week.  That way I was home all the time when she first moved in, and spared her the stress of coming into a new environment and then getting cooped up by herself for extended periods of time.  Obviously that was a little much, but I think if you could at least take a day or two off of work to be home for the dog and help him or her get used to both you and a new place, and preferably during a time where you’re not going to be held late a lot, it’ll make the transition much easier on both of you.
4.  Take a training class early on.
This was honestly the best piece of advice that I got from the rescue I adopted from - initially I wasn’t going to, Pepper already knew a couple of basic commands and was a housebroken pro when I brought her home, so initially I thought it would be a waste of money, but I wanted to try to work with her to become a therapy dog eventually so I went for a round of obedience training.  As a first time owner, it was SO HELPFUL to have a professional actually watch how the two of us interact, and help teach me how to work with my dog and teach her in ways that worked for her.  Honestly, it doesn’t have to be the most expensive or highly respected trainer in your city - we just went to an 8-week class at PetCo that I got hugely discounted because I opened an account with them and had all of her shelter papers to show that I’d adopted.  And I don’t even know that Pepper got that much out of the classes themselves, but the trainer taught me loads about handling a dog and understanding her better, which in the long run made life so, so much easier.
5.  Find your nearest dog park, read up on it, and go there frequently
If you have a good neighborhood for it a dog park can be a godsend - they let your dog burn off energy and they get to socialize and spend time being dogs... which makes walking and being in public with them much easier.  The caveat to this is making sure that the park is a good one: read up on the parks in your area, and go there without your pet first.  Again, you don’t necessarily have to have the Ivy League of exclusive dog parks, but go there and get a feel for the dogs and their owners, and watch how the dogs are playing.  I’ve had a couple of bad experiences where the dogs in the park haven’t been properly socialized or their owners didn’t have particularly good control over their dogs, and unfortunately both Pep and I have scars to show for it.  That said, once you find a good one it can seriously be the highlight of your week.
And... I’m sure I’m forgetting a few others but I’d say those are my best tips.  If you have any specific questions don’t hesitate to shoot me an ask - again, I can really only speak for my own experience, but I’m happy to talk all the same.  Other good sources of information could be your local vet or shelter/human society - after you’ve done your research and have ideas of breeds in mind you could drop in and tell them you’re looking to adopt a dog and why, and they could probably give you good advice as well (and in the case of the shelter, possibly direct you towards a fit).
And since this was a ridiculous amount of text - I’m including another cute Pepper picture to make up for it XD

Best Indestructible Dog Beds
http://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/chew-proof-dog-beds.jpg
Ever have one of those days where you wish you could hit ‘rewind’? Or just crawl into a little hole and not come out for an hour – or a year?
Yeah, I had me one of those recently.
My husband walked in on me coming absolutely, positively unglued – something that in all of our years together he’d never experienced – over the actions of one of our dogs.
I have no doubt the view of me raving like an under-medicated lunatic who just broke out of her restraints, contrasted with our dogs calmly laying around enjoying the show with their tails and tongues wagging, is what lead to him dropping his stuff and (after a moment of initial shock) practically busting a gut laughing at the scene.
Not one of my finer moments, I must admit, but I suppose I can appreciate the entertainment from his point of view – and the dogs, too.
In my defense, I had good reason to crack like a dropped egg.
Caña de Cerveza had chewed up another dog bed. I swear, that mutt is shooting to beat a personal best score.
They say every moment is a teaching or learning moment – and heaven knows on that day I did both! – as a result, and weeks of research, I became an unofficial expert on “indestructible” dog beds.
So What Makes a Dog Bed “Indestructible”?
Some dogs will chew ANYTHING!
So many manufacturers tout that their beds are “indestructibly” or “chew proof”, but if you’re like me, you want to know how they gauge what makes the cut.
Is it simply because it takes a lot more effort for a dog doesn’t rip it into a million shreds the minute Mom walks out of the room?
Or is it made from materials that taste nasty so your pooch doesn’t want to bite into it?
Is there a balance between durability and safety?
And for heaven’s sake – does a dog bed even exist that won’t be turned into stuffing at some point with a little effort and a whole lot of motivation from a bored pup?
To answer those questions, we need to decide what defines “indestructible” – and if it’s right for your dog.
To start with, “indestructible” and “chew proof” in relation to dog beds are used interchangeably by the manufacturers as the same thing; it might still be chewed, but without excessive damage – and your pooch may lose interest in it.
While we’re at it – these so-called “chew-proof” beds aren’t an automatic requirement. Unless your pup has left multiple bed carcasses in their wake, try choose a bed based on comfort – especially for an older dog.
Most tougher beds are, obviously, made from tougher materials – and those canvas-type materials aren’t the most comfortable.
Keep in mind most dogs chew out of boredom. If you have provided enough stimulation while you’re not at home – especially larger soft chew toys – then there’s less chance that your furbaby will resort to ripping the stuffing out of his bed.
Of course, some dogs chew because they’re jerks – uh, I mean, because they enjoy it.
When choosing an indestructible bed, remember that it’s all about the construction. The best outer materials can fail quickly with poor construction, and sub-par materials can actually hold up much longer than expected if stitched and assembled well.
Outer Material
The general construction material of the bed will determine the chew-worthiness of the bed.
While we want to balance durability and comfort, our focus is a bed for our four-legged friend that will not look like a stuffing factory exploded in the living room.
1680D Ballistic Nylon
If you think 1680D Ballistic Nylon sounds a lot like the material that your backpack is made from – you’d be right. Although not technically “indestructible”, this is a classic chew proof material because of the dog’s lack of interest in chewing it, as well as its resilient durability when chewed.
Canvas
Not as durable as 1680D, canvas is a good choice for its durability and also because it is a material that does not naturally entice chewing.
Denim
A less durable material, but a dog that has never had denim toys – like one made from an old pair of jeans – will generally not begin to gnaw on this.
Microfiber
Have you ever come home to this?
The microfibers – including microsuede – are not the preferred choice for dog beds since they mimic the plush stuffed tows our chewers delight in disassembling.
Inner Material
I’ve always been a bit disappointed by the lacking of real regulation and labeling of materials on dog beds, but there’s not much we can do about it.
Unless your dog has special needs (age, arthritis, allergies) the materials aren’t as important as long as it’s adequate for comfort.
Waterproof
This really isn’t a “make or break” rating – unless a bed claims to be waterproof and fails. But let’s be honest – waterproofness is only important if we specifically need it, and then it’s gotta be on point.
Construction
Don’t settle for anything less than double stitching at the seams.
Remember for beds constructed with multiple layers of fabric, one layer may fail and the next – for whatever reason – may not; unless your dog breaks all the way through to the inner cover or filling, the bed may not be considered “failed” by the manufacturer.
Warranty
This is a tricky one. Most manufacturers offer a 30 or 90 day warranty – but limit the replacement of the cover only or the bed to one-time. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the warranty before purchase.
Lastly, try to resist the urge to treat your dog bed with anti-chew sprays. At best they can cause your pup to avoid their bed – and at worst they can cause chemical burns when chewing, or other irritations to eyes or nose when snuggling.
Best Indestructible Dog Beds
There are dozens of tough dog beds on the market, touting their indestructibility in some form or another.
The below were chosen from a stringent assortment of scientifically methods, including flipping coins and pointing to pictures and asking the dogs which the liked.
As with other items from our reviews, those products that passed well are donated to a local shelter.
DIY Durable Denim Duvet
This option intrigued me from a do-it-yourself aspect, but also because of their dual claims of “chew resistant” and “not chew proof rated” – so that seemed like acceptable grounds to check it out.
For our review, we focused on the 1680D nylon cover – but be advised if you choose the microsuede that you’re just creating a giant stuffed animal – and we all know what happens when our chewers sink their jaws into a soft, plush toy.
Technical
Size: Multiple available
Medium (36″ x 29″)
Large (48″ x 29″)
Color: Seal Brown
Also available in black, tan, brown, olive, blue, and grey depending on cover material chosen.
Outer Material: 1680D Nylon
Also available in canvas, denim, oxford, or microsuede depending on color chosen.
Inner Material: Consumer provided pillows or other filler material.
Chew Rating: 4/5 for material chosen and reviewed.
Overview: The concept was a good one, when you think about it; a tough outer cover added to a waterproof inner cover that allows you to make your dog bed from the best materials for their personal needs.
The three pillow option of the large bed held the pillows nicely, although it led to an awkward size for my test-mutt.
Unfortunately, it’s important to carefully pay attention to the material when choosing color, since you may wind up with a cover made of microsuede that entices chewing rather than one of the sturdier covers.
The inner “waterproof” cover was definitely not what was pictured, and unfortunately didn’t hold up to the water balloon test for waterproofness.
Tails Up (Pros): The 1680D ballistic is a durable material. A serious chewer will still try it, but lose interest before any damage occurs. The ability to change the inner materials was surprisingly easy and refreshing, as opposed to hours searching for the perfect combination of cover and comfort.
Tails Down (Cons): The sizing of the duvet is awkward, since it’s long and narrow. Also, the waterproof inner cover seems to barely register as water-resistant. The zipper really needs to be more durable. The pillows shifted around easily, leading to uncomfortable hard spots.
Verdict: Good idea, but falls short due to the inner cover, inability for the pillows to stay in place, and ordering confusion.

goDog Bubble Bolster
This manufacturer makes some of our favorite stuffed toys, so it was a no-brainer to include a review when this came up on my radar.
There are several options for the loft of the outer material, and for the sake of this review, the XX-large size in cocoa we chose is the high pile plush constructed material.
goDog beds are not self-classified as indestructable, but rather “guaranteed to last longer than standard plush beds”.
Technical:
Size: Multiple available
X-small (18″ x 13″)
Small (23″ x 17″)
Medium (30″ x 19″)
Large (35″ x 23″)
X-large (43″ x 28″)
XX-large (49″ x 30″)
Color: Cocoa
Also available in tan, beige, and grey
Outer Material: Unspecified, shaggy material
Inner Material: Unspecified
Chew Rating: 1/5 for bed chosen and reviewed
Overview: Like with the other beds, the first thing I did when setting the goDog Bubble Bolster bed on the floor was to crawl onto it and check it out myself for comfort – and boy was it!
The plush material was soft and the feel of the hardwood through the bed was definitely decreased. It could easily lend itself to a nap were it not for the other canines demanding their turn.
The bed boasts a bolster, which is not much more than a raised edge around the bed, and the overall stitching. The Chew Guard Technology™ is a proprietary process that adds a tear-resistant mesh lining.
The seams are reinforced and the bed as a whole is machine washable.
Tails Up (Pros): The overall construction appears well done, the no-skid bottom is a nice touch, and their sizing is geared towards fitting standard crating, allowing the bed to easily pull double-duty – a bonus when your pup is traveling away from home.
Tails Down (Cons): The bed is not waterproof or water resistant, and the fluffy plush material of the bed was no more than a giant chew toy.
Verdict: This bed had an impressively short lifespan because the plushy soft material is indistinguishable from a standard chew toy.

DogBed4Less Orthopedic Memory Foam Dog Bed
An orthopedic dog bed that’s indestructible? Sign me up! With numerous sizes available to choose from, a single piece, 100% gel-infused memory foam interior cushion, with an inner waterproof liner and a tough exterior made from 1680D.
I didn’t read much more of the description before adding it to the cart.
Technical:
Size: Multiple available
Small/Medium (35″ x 20″)
Medium/Large (37″ x 27″)
Large (41″ x 27″)
Extra Large (47″ x 29″)
Extra Large (40″ x 35″)
XX-Large (55″ x 37″)
Jumbo (55″ x 47″)
Color: Navy Blue
Also available in seal brown
Outer Material: 1680D Nylon
Inner Material: 4″ 100% gel-infused memory foam (non-toxic)
Chew Rating: 5/5 for bed chosen and reviewed
Overview: This orthopedic bed is not fully chew proof rated from the manufacturer – but the dogs don’t know that. After a few discrete test chews (yeah – she didn’t think we saw her!) the interest in the bed as a source of entertainment subsided.
The exterior is rougher than some of the more indulgent materials, but that’s to be expected – we’re shifting from softness to durability.
The waterproof interior certainly held up as waterproof, and the orthopedic core held up to sleep and play.
Tails Up (Pros): This bed was surprisingly comfortable, and the cool gel was definitely welcome in the recent heat wave.
Tails Down (Cons): Replacing the core after washing was a wee troublesome, and the zipper of the bed we tried was a bit stiff – but easily remedied by a bit of beeswax.
Verdict: A great bed that was generous enough in size for multiple large dogs to flop on for cool comfort.

K9 Ballistics Crate Pad
Specifically a crate pad, the manufacturer advertises this bed for light to moderate chewers only, and will resist about 90% of chewing. The overall construction of 1680D is not water resistant or waterproof.
Technical:
Size: Multiple Available
Toy (23″ x 17″)
X-Small (30″ x 19″)
Small (35″ x 23″)
Medium (41″ x 28″)
Large (47″ x 36″)
X-Large (51″ x 36″)
Color: Green Camo
Also available in black, blue, grey camo, green, red, tan.
Outer Material: 1680D Nylon
Inner Material: 1.5″ thick polyester fill
Chew Rating: 3/5 for bed chosen and reviewed
Overview: As a crate pad, the K9 Ballistics is an acceptable option. The 1680D nylon holds up well to scratching and the double-stitching lends itself to quality construction. The cover is not removable, but the whole unit is machine washable.
Like with any 1680D, there is ancillary noise when the dogs move around on it. When used as a stand-alone bed, it did not fall victim to chewing – but it wasn’t used much, either. Probably due to the thinness of the overall bed.
As a crate liner, the loft was adequate, but dogs to tend to chew their crate bedding more, and its lifetime is definitely limited if you have a crate chewer.
Tails Up (Pros): The 1680D is good construction material, and the sizing fits the popular kennels.
Tails Down (Cons): The thin pad is not protective enough, and the crate ties are an enticement for chewers
Verdict: the K9 Ballistics Crate Pad has an adequate design and good materials, but it’s too thin for comfort.

Kuranda Elevated Dog Bed
An elevated, PVC-framed dog bed that is basically a hammock design, which will avoid base pressure points. The PVC frame is walnut colored, and assembled at home with enclosed stainless steel hardware.
There is an optional fleece pad available for extra comfort. PVC glue is NOT recommended for use during assembly.
Technical:
Size: Multiple Available
Small (30″ x 20″)
Medium (35″ x 23″)
Large (40″ x 25″)
X-Large (44″ x 27″)
XX-Large (50″ x 36″)
Color: Khaki
Also available burgundy, forest green, smoke.
Outer Material: Cordura®
Inner Material: None
Chew Rating: 5/5 for bed chosen and reviewed
Overview: As it is, this bed really is chew-proof – but I wouldn’t consider it indestructible due to the construction. There is no specific weight for the Cordura® but it feels like standard canvas weight, or about 1000D nylon.
The Kuranda elevated dog bed is basically a raised cot, commonly used for teaching “place”. The dogs go to it easily enough as instructed, but it is not a chosen place for a nap – although it became more attractive when their regular bed was put on top.
Unless your dog has had experience with these raised cots, there will be a long curve for them to get used to it between the insecure footing and noisiness of the material. Assembly required.
Tails Up (Pros): A simple design that easily lends itself to the indestructible label.
Tails Down (Cons): Uncomfortable without additional padding (that may be chewed!), definitely not a good choice for arthritic dogs. Dogs not familiar with cots will shy away from it.
Verdict: Considering only the chew factor, this option receives a 5/5 – but there is no real comfort unless the fleece pad is ordered, or a folded blanket is placed over the top, and even then its unique design may likely be rebuffed due to insecure footing.

Slumber Pet Toughstructable Bed
When I came across this bed touting to be the “future in chew-proof dog beds”, with its advertised chew-proof ripstop material, double-stitched seams, and reinforced corners, I was excited.
I clicked the button to add it to my cart, and anxiously awaited its arrival.
Technical:
Size: Multiple Available
Medium (36″ x 23″)
Large (42″ x 28″)
Color: Tan
Outer Material: Polyester
Inner Material: Polyfil
Chew Rating: 0/5 for bed chosen and reviewed
Overview: They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression – and boy did this bed make an impression. Just not a good one.
I’m not sure what they consider ripstop material – but this is definitely not what I’ve encountered.
The Slumber Pet Toughstructable bed felt like the material my aunt’s curtains were made out of.
The double-stitched seams weren’t, there weren’t channels for the filling, and there was no indication of reinforcing at the corners.
I know this for a fact – the bed’s remains were strewn across the living room in less than 2 hours. Oh, and don’t bother looking for a warranty – there was none.
Tails Up (Pros): The Velcro closure was nice, I suppose.
Tails Down (Cons): Hmmm … Just throw $65 in small bills on the floor and it would probably last longer.
Verdict: Poorly made, falsely advertised, and overpriced.

KONG Chew Resistant Heavy Duty Pillow Dog Bed
I stumbled across this one completely by accident, so I added it to my cart – and quickly deleted it. Just shy of $300 seemed a bit pricey, even with my Prime shipping.
But it was Kong so I poked around and found it at PetSmart for less than $100. Pleased with my frugalness, I put in my order and waited for my treasure.
Technical:
Size: 30″ x 40″
Color: Brown
Outer Material: Polyester
Inner Material: Polyester
Chew Rating: 3/5 for bed chosen and reviewed
Overview: I won’t say this was the worst bed reviewed – but in light of the company reputation, it was by far the most disappointing.
I fully expected the same Kong toughness that I had enjoyed with their soft toys (well, not that I chew them personally – you know what I mean!) but that was not the case.
The polyester was certainly not going to stand up to roughhousing for long, but for whatever reason none of the dogs tried to disassemble it – maybe because of the faint funny odor.
The piping around the edge is definitely a chew enticement, as is the carrying handle. More size options would have been nice.
Tails Up (Pros): The dogs didn’t chew it. It’s a Kong. It seems comfortable enough to me.
Tails Down (Cons): The Kong dog bed is definitely not up to the standards of other Kong products. The handle feels like it can be easily ripped off, and the material definitely doesn’t feel like it will withstand much pawing.
The dogs didn’t have much interest laying on it unless instructed to.
Verdict: Let’s be honest – Kong knows how to build tough toys that could withstand Jaws on a bad day and come back for more. Beds… not so much. It’s really no surprise that these beds are not listed on the Kong website anywhere. Be sure to price shop!

K9 Ballistics Original TUFF Dog Bed
The next step up from their crate pad, the K9 Ballistics TUFF Bed option is designed in true dog-bed style. A more colorful pallet of 1680D nylon exterior and a thick channeled poly fiber fill was more than I could resist – so I didn’t.
Technical:
Size: Multiple Available
Small (18″ x 24″)
Medium (27″ x 33″)
Large (34″ x 40″)
X-large (38″ x 54″)
XX-Large (40″ x 68″)
Color: Sunny Sky Stripe
Also available in black, blue, gray camo, green, green camo, lattice, marine blue stripe, red, and tan.
Outer Material: 1680D Nylon
Inner Material: Polyester stuffing
Chew Rating: 5/5 for bed chosen and reviewed
Overview: The 1680D nylon is tough, and the ripstop pattern will definitely stop small rips from expanding through standard use. The K9 Ballistics TUFF bed is definitely not waterproof; according to the manufacturer, it’s designed for any wetness to pass right through – and it actually does.
The velcro strip replacing a zipper will eliminate any chewing enticement.
Tails Up (Pros): This bed is easy to clean, and comfortable for the dogs. The fluffy filling doesn’t compact as much as I thought it would, and it withstood digging and rough-house play.
Tails Down (Cons): There is definitely more outer material than inner material, leading to an under-stuffed look.
Verdict: Well made tough dog bed that definitely lives up to the standards of toughness set by K9 Ballistics.

Please note: This bed also comes in a bolstered version; a couch-style with arms and a back for those pups that like to snuggle into their beds.
K9 Ballistics Deep Den Dog Bed
Another K9 Ballistics option (mostly because I like the name!) for the nesters and snugglers of the house. The rounded oval design, high sides, and generous stuffing make for a comfortable sleeping spot for young and old dogs that like to curl up.
Technical:
Size: Multiple Available
Small (24″ x 28″)
Medium (30″ x 24″)
Large (36″ x 28″)
X-Large (45″ x 38″)
Color: Black
Also available in lattice and green camo
Outer Material: 1680D Nylon
Inner Material: Unspecified
Chew Rating: 4/5 for bed chosen and reviewed
Overview: As expected, the Deep Dog Den bed was another well made product from a manufacturer determined to get their super-durable dog beds right.
The full perimeter wall allows the pup to be fully snuggled in without the annoyance of an opening.
The fluffy filling is soft and non-clumping, and the overall design can be tempting for committed chewers.
Tails Up (Pros): Rugged material and quality construction. Smaller sizes are machine washable; the X-Large size needs to be cleaned with a hose.
Tails Down (Cons): The interior lining may not hold up to extended digging – typical for nesters and snugglers. The overall design could be a chew enticement, especially the removable bottom pad.
Verdict: Although not chewed by my dogs, the removable bottom pad and high sides could definitely be chewing enticements.

Hugglehounds Chew Resistant TuffutLuxx Bed
One more manufacturer of tough toys tossing their offering into the “unchewable” dog bed arena. The fashionable colors of their removable outer cover feature contrast quilted-stitching to give an extra classy look.
The manufacturer touts their beds as “Abrasion resistance more than 6x higher than most tough chew dog beds”. With claims like that, it needs to spend some time with my chewer.
Technical:
Size: Multiple Available
Medium (36″ x 27″)
Large (42″ x 30″)
X-Large (48″ x 36″)
Color: Atlantic Night
Also available in Belgian chocolate and champagne
Outer Material: Unspecified nylon
Inner Material: Polyfill
Chew Rating: 4/5 for bed chosen and reviewed
Overview: Without a doubt, the Hugglehounds TuffetLuxx is a nice looking bed. The quilted stitching gives the nylon outer a little more of a softer feel, and the polyfill is fluffy and adequate.
The zipper flap is well stitched, although the zipper itself was stiff and snaggy.
Advertised as waterproof, only the inner cover held up to water balloons.
Tails Up (Pros): Nice looking bed sure to go with any décor, comfortable and sturdy. Held up well enough to canine tug-of-war.
Tails Down (Cons): Although only one of the dogs chewed through (can you guess which one?), the threads snag and rip easily when pawed; this can lead to weak areas that will tear.
Verdict: Not a bad bed at all, although it fails to meet the high expectations that come from their lofty claims.

Bottom Line
We’ve looked at just a sliver of the “indestructable” dog beds on the market, and K9 Ballistics are a clear forerunner overall – although the DogBed4Less was our clear winner for their chew-proof orthopedic design, overall construction, and bang for your buck.
Unless constructed out of chainmail, no dog bed is truly indestructible for a committed canine.
Also bear in mind when choosing a bed that each dog is different, and their chewing needs are just as varied – and their toys will give you a good indication of construction material that are the better choices.
For example, if you use old jeans to make chew and tug toys for your pup – what do you think will happen to a denim bed?
You definitely get what you pay for – but before dropping several hundred dollars on a bed, do a little price shopping. Also, check your local pet store; an afternoon spent trying out beds could go a long way to choosing the best one for your pooch.
Above all, remember that dogs will be dogs.
It’s been a few months now, and Cerveza hasn’t chewed up her new bed.
Now if I can just get her to stop hoarding cheese under it…
