"No, no, no, no. Hey. To hell with the rules." (For James) sent by @thesilverandjetsystem .
🔪 ‘ Easy for you to say, ’ Bucky mumbles, straightening up from where he was leaning over the large round table to show off the red and white stripes on his abdomen, the blue across his chest and white star splashed in the middle. He’d put himself in this position and he was going to ride it through. Living in the light was a choice he made — and yeah, maybe it totally sucks, but it was ultimately handcuffing himself to the straight and narrow in the hopes that it would extinguish the shadows inside in him. Taking off the uniform and slinking back into the dark would defeat everything. ‘ We do this legit, Marc. Find ‘em. Cuff ‘em. Bring ‘em in for questioning. We do this under a white light or not at all. ’

A little question for the buckynat shippers/everyone who is on track with the comics and all their intricacies.
What do you think it’s the reason for Bucky and Nat not being back together yet? (evil marvel writers aside XD)
- we know that they were very much in love during the buckycap era/ws 2012 run. Bucky considered Nat not only his lover, but his best friend. They helped and supported each other several times. Nat stood for him publicily against others judgment, Bucky considered her to be his only “home”. Their bond was strong and authentic, and it was broken not of their own will but for a tragic outside event.
- we know from BW 2016 that Nat regained her memories of all their time together
- when Bucky was presumed death she suffered much
- we know that between 2017 - 2018 they spent some time together working on few missions (the end of Tale of Suspense hinted at it, Punisher, War of Realms...)
- in BW 2019 we have another confirmation that Natasha does remember their relationship
- in BW 2020 Bucky confessed he still had hopes for them to be together again, and Nat replayed that she felt the same (at least before the fake family crap)
It seems they had a lots of time and occasions to try and rebuilt the bond that was so special for the both of them, but then never made the final step forward. It’s really clear that they are still in love with each other, so why don’t even try? They did this before, getting back together after the Red Room, showing that their feelings were real and not something created by some dramatic and unusual circumstances.
I’d be curious to hear your take on this in a 616 canon prospective! :3
(I know the actual reason is that writers at marvel are messed up and have difficulties following some kind of continuity/internal coherence with writing characters, but let’s pretend there’s some other believable motivation here! XDDD)

how would you do 2012-era Winter Soldier Steve for Yonder AU Bucky-Cap
See, with this one it's less about WS!Steve, because the Winter Soldier doesn't play any role in the 2012 film there I'd not really thought about what he'd do. It's really the kind of thing that would get spurred into motion because now the Yonder Trio is there and Yonder!Steve is not going to rest until he gets this thing sorted out without the CATWS murder planes etc. Remember, Yonder!Steve is also Horizon!Steve, who came within a hair's breadth of getting Winter Soldiered and is still pretty significantly messed up by it. It was his personal private nightmare before Horizon, so finding out that there exists a universe where it actually happened back in 1945 is uh. not a fun time for him. (Well, if Endgame can do a Cap vs Cap fight...that's one thing I was really sad about not being able to fit into Yonder, either Cap vs Cap or Widow vs Widow -- I don't think Yonder!Loki punching out 2012!Loki counts.)
This is not precisely a BuckyCap even though he's in a Captain America uniform -- this is the thing I had to change yesterday once I started thinking about the base worldbuilding of the AU.
The divergence point of the AU is that Steve is the one who falls off the train in CATFA, not Bucky, and the events of CATFA in the broad strokes go naturally from there -- the assault on the Hydra base, the fight with Schmidt, Bucky going down in the Valkyrie and getting frozen. (Probably the actual details of the fight go differently, but broad strokes.) I generally put about a week between the train fight and the assault, to give the Howlies time to get back to London (with the "under twenty-four hours" being between London and Austria, I know some writers who ignore that entirely and put months between). Those events went differently -- while there's probably a sweet moment between Peggy and Bucky, both grieving, Howard very publicly and very dramatically blamed Bucky for Steve's apparent death, which is why Bucky is so prickly about Tony's mention of Howard.
(Steve going missing a week earlier than he did in canon did not make Howard any less obsessed with Steve. In fact, it probably made it worse, because the differences between falling from the train and going down in the Valkyrie mean that (a) Howard can blame people and (b) is even more convinced that ever that Steve survived, just no one is looking, don't they care? So that very slightly changes Howard's dynamics with everyone going forward. but also makes, you know, the murder in 1991 way worse. It does not improve Tony's relationship with his father or his Captain America issues.)
Bucky brought the shield back to the SSR after the train, but didn't take it on the assault, so for sixty-seven years it was just sitting in SHIELD's storage because no one knew what to do with it. Howard threw his weight around every time someone suggested making a new Captain America, backed up by Peggy, who had slightly more mixed feelings about it than he did but wasn't any happier about the idea either.
Fast forward to 2012, when SHIELD pulls Bucky Barnes out of the ice. They are more than a little startled, because they didn't know about the whole super soldier thing, but Nick Fury has Seen Some Shit so it's taken pretty much in stride. He doesn't get the stage show treatment that Steve gets at the end of CATFA, but otherwise SHIELD treats him pretty much the same until Loki shows up at Project Pegasus. Fury and Coulson haul him over to the helicarrier (less hero worship on Coulson's part, because he's a Cap fanboy, not a Howling Commandos fanboy) and present him with the shield and a nice speech about Steve Rogers' legacy.
Bucky tells them to fuck off, there's no power on this earth that will make him pick up that shield, and don't they dare say one word about what Steve Rogers would have wanted, they don't know anything about him. They are still arguing about it when Loki shows up at Stuttgart and Bucky has to go do the thing. He puts on the uniform (under protest), but won't take the shield. It is not the 2012 Cap uniform, but a different Captain America-inspired one that blends the Cap-and-Howlie aesthetics a little. (Presumably the three-way forest fight with Tony and Thor also goes a little differently, but it has the same ultimate result of everyone back on the helicarrier.)
The gang is having their regularly scheduled "you want to use the Tesseract to make weapons????" argument in the lab when the Yonder trio shows up. (Bucky does not go searching and find the WWII Hydra gear, because unlike Steve Rogers, he does not have border collie brain.)
I assume that even with Steve getting Winter Soldiered in this 'verse rather than Bucky, most of the Winter Soldier's history goes pretty much the same -- I don't think we know enough to say what might have actually gone differently if one switches them out for each other. (Except that Natasha might recognize Steve straight-off from their encounter in 2009, if he wasn't masked then.)

Have you seen Sebastian stan in a man bun anon?// Yep, which is why I can unequivocally say no man alive looks good in a man bun. As for more comic accurate hair, Bucky had short hair for quite some time in comics, especially in the Brubaker Buckycap era. The current long hair and the red star on the arm are due in large part to the MCU influence.

Hi! Hope you are well. I wanted to ask about Cap comics mainly Steve Rogers. My son wants to read Cap comics but we don’t know where to start. He doesn’t want to read Spencer’s run. Any suggestions?
My starter rec for pretty much everyone is the miniseries Captain America: Man Out of Time. It’s a modern version of Steve’s origin story that shows him being found by the Avengers and getting used to the present. So that way you’ll get an idea of who Steve is and where he came from while still reading modern comics. (I mean, I like the original comics too. But they can be very problematic at times and they’re kind of an acquired taste.)
Other than that, it depends what you like, really. Mark Waid, who wrote Man Out of Time, also had two (two-ish? three?) runs on Captain America, and honestly the way he writes Cap is my favorite and basically the way I see Steve; he gives Steve an earnestness that could be corny but isn’t, and I feel like he does a really good job conveying what’s so inspiring about Steve. Like, you see why people want to follow this guy. Waid’s first Cap run was in the mid-late 90s, at the tail end of volume 1, #444-454, and you can read it currently in print in the Epic Collection called Man Without A Country. He continued to write Cap for the first 23 issues of volume 3; I own it in omnibus (which includes the vol 1 issues and an additional miniseries called Sentinel of Liberty) but the individual arcs are (or at least were) available in trade as To Serve And Protect, American Nightmare, Red Glare, and Land of the Free.
If you enjoy Waid’s writing but like him better with more modern art, he had a very short recent run (technically vol 1 as this was when everything renumbered very briefly). It’s the run right after Spencer’s but I promise you can read it without reading (or liking) Secret Empire. It’s collected in two trades, Home of the Brave and Promised Land, though I’d only recommend the first one because Promised Land... doesn’t really have Steve in it. The first one (which is the Waid/Samnee run) does have Cap #700, which is probably my most favorite recent Cap issue that I’ve read in... I dunno, years? It’s good. So, yeah, definitely check out Home of the Brave.
Ta-Nehisi Coates’ current Cap run (vol 9) is also a very solid and interesting read, with a lot of big and heavy themes, but it has some pacing issues and if you’re specifically looking to avoid any hints of Secret Empire you probably want to avoid it because it’s very much about what people think of Steve (and what Steve thinks of himself) in the wake of Secret Empire. It is, however, probably my second favorite current comic I’m reading, so there’s that. (The first is Unbeatable Squirrel Girl.)
Coates’ run is pretty clearly influenced by Ed Brubaker’s Cap run (vol 5), which I know a lot of people rate as their favorite Cap run, but Brubaker’s Steve is a little too grim and joyless for me. Also, uh, Steve dies in #25 and after that it’s all BuckyCap, so if you’re looking for a run where Steve is Captain America it mostly isn’t this one. But a lot of people really love it!
There are also a lot of classic Cap stories and runs that are worth reading! I think if I had to recommend just one arc to start with I’d probably pick the Stern/Byrne run from the early 80s (#247-255), collected in an old trade called War & Remembrance, currently in an Epic Collection called Dawn’s Early Light. This is from the era when Steve has just moved to Brooklyn Heights and is starting to be a commercial artist (although not a comic book artist; that’s slightly later). It features the first appearance of Bernie Rosenthal! It has one of my favorite Batroc the Leaper stories. And it has #250, where people want Steve to run for president and Steve’s response is... well, it’s very Captain America.
I hope that gives you somewhere to start!

Marvel Fans React to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Finale
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article contains spoilers for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finale.
We made it. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally finished its run on Disney+ this week, and no one must have been happier about it than the cast and crew of the ambitious Marvel series, who had to fight tooth and nail to get it wrapped up during a global pandemic.
There weren’t too many surprises in the finale, but the show delivered pretty much everything it promised. Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) took up the Captain America mantle and tried to resolve the Flag-Smashers situation once and for all, but ended up giving a passionate speech about the nature of terrorism and the grey areas that many politicians would rather pretend didn’t exist instead.
Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) continued to make amends for his actions as the deadly Winter Soldier and found some peace in his resolve, while Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) was revealed as the decidedly deceptive Power Broker, surprising precisely no one. Not even a belated pardon from the US government was about to get her back on side, it turned out.
Baron Zemo of course had one final chess move to play from the relative comfort of his cell on The Raft, neutralising the rest of the Flag-Smasher super soldiers in a bomb blast carried out by his devoted butler. The gang’s leader Karli also lost her life to the cause, which she’d seemed dead set on throughout the episode, even when Sam was refusing to play the game.
In an incredibly emotional scene, Sam made sure that Isaiah Bradley’s sacrifices would be public knowledge and never again forgotten. Will we see Isaiah’s nephew Eli become Young Avengers member Patriot in the MCU at a later date? Possibly!
The matter of John Walker’s future was left deliberately muddy, but the ex-marine made some progress in fighting the emotional effects of the super soldier serum, eventually becoming his current Marvel Comics counterpart, US Agent, in a rushed scene towards the end of the episode. Julia Louis-Dreysfus’ Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine was there to make sure Walker’s new suit fit just right, but we didn’t get any further information about what the Contessa is planning, only a promise that things are about to get “weird”.
Much like WandaVision, there were no big Marvel Cinematic Universe cameos during the finale – Chris Evans making an appearance as Old Cap just wasn’t in the cards – and a post-credits scene simply cemented Sharon Carter’s future as the elusive Power Broker. The US government has accidentally acquired a very connected mole out to steal new weapons and tech in Agent Carter, and this story will surely play a part in Marvel’s upcoming Armor Wars and Ironheart series. Peggy must be rolling in her grave.
In the end, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier became Captain America and the Winter Soldier. But whether we’ll get a chance to see the duo have any further adventures together on Disney+ is anyone’s guess at the time of writing.

Angry ramblings about Marvel, and the fandom, and longing for the days of yesteryear.
Tumblr media
I say this as someone who is not currently reading monthly comics, and as someone who recently came out as bi.
I’m tired. I’m tired of people proclaiming that buckynat is some sort of gross heterosexual fantasy that glorifies r*pe.
I’m tired of the assumption that if you ship buckynat, you’re somehow reducing and lessening Nat.
Tired of the assumption that you’re also homophobic, bc Bucky is gay and Steve’s magic dick will save the world.
It’s like... I have very good friends/who ship buckynat AND steve/bucky. Like Stef/ @readytocomply, who is lovely.
It’s cool. We get along fine. It is okay to let others enjoy different things, you can love those people and their different ship tastes don’t preclude pleasant interactions.
Your assholish-ness does. And believe me, when I first was on tumblr, I was a teenage white boy who thought he was straight. I understand assholish-ness. I was a petty son of a bitch when it came to shipping and the ship wars, for a while.
Then I grew the fuck up. Relatively, and gained some fucking perspective. I don’t deny past behavior, but I don’t like to look back and reflect upon it. Anyone who was on tumblr at that time can tell you, people were fucking hostile to each other in regards to ships.
Buckynat? Stevebucky? Clint/Nat? Steve/Tony? It was nasty shit, and I‘m happy to leave it in the past.
So it isI’m tired of Marvel blindly instigating ship wars on twitter re Tales of Suspense, asking people if they like Nat better with Bucky or Clint.
Can’t we leave that in 2013? Where it was just as dumb then as it is now, tbh?
It’s tiresome. I’m tired.
As for the comics, I know Waid is back with Samnee and that book is supposed to be good, but I’m just not really that interested? I’m not reading any current comics rn.
I miss the Commander Rogers & BuckyCap era. The pleasantness of it all. There was drama, serious themes, but it was fun and entertaining. Characters were in character, and we didn’t have to worry about things like ‘Bucky can show up in Nat’s book if it doesn’t interfere with Thunderbolts~’ like we did the last volume of her series.
Nat could be with Bucky in the Cap books, but also had her own book and appeared in Avengers titles. Steve appeared everywhere, and had his own mini in which Sharon had a heavy presence. He also appeared in the main Cap books.
We got good stories, with good villains. Zemo outing Bucky. The aftermath, with the Trial and return of Sin. I liked Gulag, but that seemed to be the line in the sand.
I miss the actual family element of the Cap family. When they weren’t all fractured, all over the place. I miss when Bucky had friends, and wasn’t portrayed as a lonely angsty emo all the time. He had his moments, sure, and some doubts, but... Marvel’s taken it to the extreme.
Is he still a fugitive? Does the public still think he’s dead? After all, Nat and Sharon proved the charges he was thrown in the gulag for were false.
Can he have some friends again? I know apparently he and Namor interacted in Secret Empire, and that before Steve became HYDRA they had the interactions with he and Sam and Steve but... I feel more could be done?
Y’know Bucky and Toro have never interacted in a Cap or Winter Soldier book proper since both returned? Have him interact with someone like John Walker/USAgent, who also served as Cap for a while but everyone forgets about bc he’s a douche?
And Cap’s supporting cast goes beyond the core cap family. Old allies, and villains?
How interesting would it be to see Sin and Diamondback encounter each other? In a story where Brock is mentioned, but their facing off has nothing to do with him. Let it tie into the Serpent Society. Bring Rachel back into the family.
When Sam became Cap, I know quite a few people thought it would be interesting if Eli became the new Falcon. From what I understand there are legal issues that prevent this, the same reason he’s the only YA not in LEGO Avengers or Avengers Academy but...... I’d like to see him back.
I just miss the character dynamics. A lot. The cast interacting
And we aren’t even getting much focus on Cap’s actual staple of characters in the MCU, aside from Sam and Bucky. They get short changed. Look at Sharon and Crossbons. Two big characters from Cap mythology, with rather small parts in the films.
I liked Civil War enough for what it was, but I still think I would have preferred Serpent Society.
That leads into the MCU as well. I enjoyed Ragnarok. Warriors Three were done dirty, but hey. Guardians 2 was fun. Homecoming was ok. I’m hyped for Black Panther, cautiously optimistic for Captain Marvel.
I only really care about Infinity War for my faves, tho? I’m not really anticipating it, but I’ll see it when it comes out.
I’m bitter that it doesn’t sound like we’ll see a return from Pietro. Even if he doesn’t come back to life for good, if things have to be reset... let Wanda say goodbye. And btw? Release the alternate AOU ending, you cowards.
I think we’d have heard by now if Hugo Weaving was coming back. He’s gone back and forth, saying he’s not really interested but never say never and he’s still contracted.
They brought back William Hurt as Ross after eight years, I mean they can bring back a more subdued and sinister Red Skull...
I want to see Betty Ross back, and not just because I don’t care for Nat/Bruce. Because I actually enjoy her as a character. I’d like to see The Leader finally show up, after being set up. Even if you can’t do a Hulk movie, have him show up for a bit in an Avengers film. Apparently Abomination was in a version of Age of Ultron, I’m imagining it had something to do with the Hulkbuster.
They finally brought back Ross, and I guess that’s progress.
I want to know where the fuck Nick Fury’s been. Does the public still think he’s dead, even after Age of Ultron? What’s he up to, now that HYDRA is apparently gone? Still underground? Hanging around that Avengers complex?
Why wasn’t he in Civil War? The man who put the Avengers together wasn’t called to testify in favor of/against the accords?
Rather than have Bucky put in cryo at the end of Civil War, you could have had him and Fury in Serpent Society and then the two of them are off in the shadows mirroring their comic dynamic. I would have loved that. I understand they set up the mentor thing with Tony, but I would have liked to see him in Homecoming instead, have that element of Ultimate Spider-Man adapted.
Alas. Arm chair writing. Griping. I just miss actively being into Marvel things.

Thanks for your thoughts re: Bucky being under Soviet vs. US control. The way you explain it makes more sense to me now. I wish the movie actually showed us this instead of us having to extrapolate and make sense of it ourselves, but what you say makes sense. Do you think there might be a future for Bucky in the MCU with the Thunderbolts? Apparently, they might be part of Phase IV or V. Do you also think they might go for BuckyNat now that Hulkwidow is over?
You’re welcome :) In the movies it’s really vague what happened to him, but in the comics it’s more specific and his amnesia was the key, but basically controlling him wasn’t easy and there was a wide-scale effort to keep him from remembering who he was.
I don’t know if they’ll do Bucky and the Thunderbolts in Phase IV, but that phase is supposed to be the “cosmic” phase, so I do wonder if they’ll do the Bucky/Man on the Wall thing where he does shady space assassin stuff to keep earth safe from alien threats. There’s been a lot of hints about Buckycap, but I think that kind of depends on whether Chris sticks around and whether the mcu is brave enough to do more Cap films with a new Cap, but the Buckycap era is considered the high point of the Cap comics over the past fifteen years, so it is a very popular story and there’s a good chance we’ll see that in some form. But say they don’t do another Cap trilogy, they could fit space sniper Bucky into their cosmic stuff. The thunderbolts story ties into Secret Empire tho, and with it being kind of polarizing I doubt they would bring that to the big screen.
BuckyNat’s a toss up. I think the Russos would like to do it. I think they and Sebastian are fans. There’s hints. I mean Bucky didn’t say he liked redheads for nothing and Nat didn’t make that comment about Bucky recognizing her with her legs around his neck for nothing. I think it’s a matter of the Russos waiting for official permission and I guess if Scarjo is sticking around. BuckyNat has a lot of fans, so they don’t have much to lose by going there, even if it’s a little bit of work to get it to make sense in the mcu. I think they need to give them a chance to interact and actually talk instead of just having these violent run-ins and maybe see if fans take to it.

I agree with the anon that said he'd probably get a standalone. I just imagine they'd use Bucky for more then being a side character. Like the fact that they had him sign for 9 films just to start him off makes me think they have big plans for him. Your last anon though seems so sure it won't happen though haha
I think they see him as a built-in path to keep the Cap franchise/character going after Evan’s departure. BuckyCap was a really well-received era in comics, so I’m sure they’ve always seen it as a possibility worth considering. Also, with contracts of three major headlining Avengers ending, they might be considering a New Avengers type thing and he’d probably be included in that. I think he fits in the category of important characters. I find that for the screen time he gets and for an action franchise, his slow burn toward superhero has been thoughtfully laid out. I think giving him a plot in Wakanda, and a conflict with Iron Man, and hints of maybe more to the story with BW, they’re kind of positioning him away from Steve and involving him more with other characters, so I think they have some ideas for him.
