I like making up things about alien beings that canon doesn’t necessarily contradict, so her Denobulan physiology means that the number of times she’s gone hey cool bug :D and got bitten/scratched/stung means she’s become immune to many toxins

has loved Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea ever since they were little (their human mum showed it to them, probably on a computer screen to keep them entertained, but they kept wanting to watch it again and again) (could probably recite the whole script)

The name Anna was chosen as it’s fairly similar to Denobulan name sounds so easier for their family to pronounce

Regards Anna as their full name (Denobulans don't have surnames)

However being listed in files as Anna [surname, probably Baker or Bryant or something] and as both an English and Denobulan language of some sort native speaker, she gets addressed as [title/rank] [surname] more often than [title/rank] Anna, which would be correct

I couldn’t remember why I liked the idea of a Human-Denobulan mixed character so much but then I remembered the thing that inspired this is the whole sleep thing

(If you don’t know, Denobulans hibernate for a week or so once a year and do not sleep outside that. Humans sleep every 24 hours.)

This ends up meaning this character doesn’t sleep as often as a normal human, but when they do, they are Fast Asleep

So they’re awake for maybe 5 days or so, then simply collapse for a few hours and can function again

I can’t believe I forgot to include this until now, this is such an integral part of this character to me it just feels obvious

They always have their hair in a buzz cut and have done ever since they were old enough to express that their hair being too long caused them discomfort because Bad Sensory. this is 100% because at the time I was first coming up with them my hair was getting too long (it’s usually short but long enough to be curly) and itching my skin and I kept thinking mmmmmm want to cut it all off

I actually renamed her since writing this draft!! they're called Esk now (yes after the Discworld character, long story short her human mum loves Discworld)

Another interest of theirs is baking! Will elaborate on that another time as well

Whole Backstory Stuff around how she inherited this

I need to look into both Klingon family stuff and history to find out exactly how this would work but a loose timeline is

Weapon making traditionally not a women’s job (I don’t know if this is accurate to Klingon culture, it genuinely just felt like a good conflict to add)

However smol [unnamed] really wanted to learn from her uncle, so begged and nagged at him until he gave in and taught her stuff

Both verbally bothering him and just constantly being around the workshop, walking there every day, doing the cleaning jobs just to show up and show she was determined

Also necessary to this story is traditional weapon-making methods are dying out, but are preserved in something around a high- or moderately-high-status warrior having their Own Blade, rather than a copy (replicated) or a hand-me-down (unless it’s a very famous one with a great history, though still that might be presumptuous to think you’d live up to that legacy)

This has been her family’s (House’s) traditional job since anyone can remember, but only one lineage had still preserved it

Uncle is training his son to take over, but at some point when [unnamed] has been learning for a little while, this son dies in some sort of battle, leaving her as the only heir to the family’s tradition

From the little I’ve read on Memory Alpha, women couldn’t inherit a House’s title except under special circumstances, so I think she and her uncle will have to fight for her right to inherit the name and lineage

Would probably regard herself as aroace if she had the vocabulary for that, however restoring a dying craft in a remote part of a planet doesn’t leave much time for such questions

Still knows what she wants, has no intention to marry or have children, but to keep the craft being inherited she will adopt someone as a full member of her House who she believes is worthy of carrying on the tradition

This is actually a really interesting point as it shows how she regards the respect and dedication to the craft as making somebody more a part of her House than blood does

There’s a whole loosely defined thing about how she has some distant relatives who want to claim that house’s title despite having been fully prepared to let go of their house’s craftspeople’s legacy

Is actually quite short for a Klingon, maybe 5’4? and also fat and muscular, so she’s still quite a presence

howls moving castle is my all time favourite studio ghibli because of the style and aesthetic of the movie, as well as the symbolism and the self image reflected with sophie and howl.

i personally recommend spirited away if you haven’t already! it’s popular but for good reason, it’s got a sort of melancholy ending but also somewhat heartfelt.

if you want something sweet, kiki’s delivery service is a childhood fave of mine! my two sisters loved it so i watched it on repeat haha. ponyo is also a great one when you want a pure happy go lucky movie.

something more mature, i’d reccomend princess mononoke. it’s not as lighthearted as the previously mentioned, but it’s style is still BEAUTIFUL

Independent Excursion: Media Reflection- Studio Ghibli Museum

Free Writing

Today was really fun! We went to the Studio Ghibli museum and enjoyed the different parts. My favorite part had to be the first room when you entered to the left because they had film and stop motion characters and videos playing. The creativity of the exhibit included flashing lights and moving claymation, featuring characters like Ponyo and My Neighbor Totoro. Funny enough, we ate at the cafe (which the food was pretty bad) and ran into a University of Florida exchange student! We had lunch with her and talked about her different experiences and recommendations for us. After, we continued to explore the museum, with another good part being the museum-exclusive short film shown. I haven’t watched a Ghibli movie in a while and seeing the creativity and childlike emotion evoking narrative really was something worth the trip. After, we tried to go to Shirohige’s Creampuff Factory (which I was really looking forward to) but the creampuffs were all sold out once we got there. Finally, we went to the starbucks in the station by our place and got some sweet treats (matcha scone and blueberry cheesecake). Having the last day in Tokyo was super bittersweet, I really loved my experience in this city and will definitely miss it.

Looking back on the Studio Ghibli museum experience, I realized it combined many aspects of what I enjoy aesthetically. For instance, it was a pretty small space, but every single corner had something new to look at in a creative maximalist way. The areas that show the different art boards and mood collages contrasted ones I’ve seen at Disney Epcot, which were in contained glass cases and didn’t evoke emotions of what the artist was feeling and/or thinking.

Academic Reflection

The media representation I selected would be the Studio Ghibli film, “Howl’s Moving Castle”. Howl’s Moving Castle is a romance animated film that centers the pairing of Sofie and Howl. There are other character’s, such as a flame lamed Calcifer, and witches who contribute to the World War 2-esque setting. While the romance is front a center, the film is staged in a wartime setting and Howl’s home, a moving castle power by Calcifer. This media represents Japan in many ways. For instance, Howl’s castle seems to have a million things going on at once, both aesthetic and function-wise. This parallels some of my experiences in Japanese stores, namely the popular souvenir store Don Quixote and the many curated thrifted/second hand stores I’ve been to. Japanese aesthetics in these stores are proud of effortless maximalism and don’t shy away from using the small spaces to create senses of grandeur. Addedly, the film’s character fashion also represents Japan, as there are coquette-inspired pieces that hail from French aesthetics, but also durability of Western denim, hence Japanese denim coming from the occupation.

In my own experience in relation to representation in media, I think it matched quite well. I entered a lot of spaces, the Studio Ghibli Museum included, that used the aesthetics of many different places. For instance, there is an “American-core” aesthetic that I didn’t know that could exist, that presented itself in many places. Diners, cowboy boots, California surfing, and burgers, all show how media presents itself in Japan then spits itself out again in a different “Japanese-d” style. Of course, Howl’s Moving Castle is a fantasy film that is heavy on the fantasy, but the idea of mysticism and how it can materialized in the real-world seemed to be highlighted through my whole time in Japan. Taking into account, many of my interests lie in finding cute cafes and thrifting, so that bias may affect my perspective. Therefore, there are obvious slippages between reality and media, but overall Japan and the Studio Ghibli Museum seems to have perfected its unique charm.

Really amazing post this week! Thank you so much for sharing your insights and a number of various media forms that relate to the use of art to interpret nature.

Your question about comparing Paul Cezanne's "Les Bords de la Marne" and E. Rene His' "Les Reflections sur La Marne" was quite a fun thought experiment. One of the things that was strongly communicated to me by analyzing Cezanne's work was the message of fostering a harmonious relationship between human civilization and nature. Cezanne depicts a scene that demonstrates numerous human features in the landscape (ie. the house and the bridge) but, manages to do so in a way that doesn't make these elements feel like intrusions but, rather aspects of the scene's beauty. "Les Bords de la Marne" feels like an piece that could accompany interpretive messaging on the ideal way that human society can coexist with nature in a mutually beneficial way. While it appears that E. Rene His included some human elements as well, mainly the path running across the right side of the painting, the message I got from "Les Reflections sur La Marne" was one of exploration, venturing into the unknown, and connecting with the natural world through learned experiences in its depths.

You then asked what art form speaks to me the most; again - great question! In my family, movies and cinema are incredibly important aspects of our bonding and recreational time. Movies have taught me so much growing up but, one selection of movies in particular has been incredibly important in fostering a sense of connection with the environment, and that is the films from Studio Ghibli. If you have never watched a Studio Ghibli film, I highly recommend it! My current favourite would be the either Ponyo (2008) or Spirited Away (2001). These movies almost inevitably revolve around environmental messages, pointing out flaws in human-nature relationships, and depicting ways that we can move forward in a more positive way (Wolter, 2022). Studio Ghibli has also been praised for its depiction of Indigenous and First Nation's relations with the environment (2022). It is important to note that the director behind many of Studio Ghibli films is not much of an environmental advocate in their day-to-day lives but, the power of these movies to awaken the "Gift of Beauty" in individuals by showing them how to see nature in a new way is incredibly powerful (Beck et al., 2018; Wolter, 2022).

As for nature-themed songs, I unfortunately don't think I have anything to contribute but, I will definitely give your Joni Mitchell recommendation a listen!

Unit 04: Nature Interpretation through Art and Planning for 'All' Scenarios

Interpreting Nature Through Art

‘The Gift of Beauty’ in terms of nature interpretation is the ability for individuals to sense beauty in their natural surroundings, and to provide a spiritual uplifting and encourage resource preservation (Beck et al., 2018). Interpreting nature through art can draw out these types of responses in the public. Jay Griffiths (2013) describes how, “art elicits sympathy, conjures empathy and these emotions are requisites for a kind, kinned sense of society.” Each of these factors are necessary when aiming to change the public’s perspective on nature, and to have society create stronger relationships with nature. 

The use of the arts in nature interpretation programs can entertain, educate, and make emotional connections with the audience (Beck et al., 2018). Art provides nature awareness which can bring out individuals' fascination and curiosity of the natural world (van Boeckel, 2015). Ultimately, it can enhance nature interpretation programs and advertise its importance to the public. The gift of beauty in nature can be experienced through a variety of art forms that includes theatre, visual arts, music and dance. These art forms have been used as tools of interpretation for decades as there is a natural connection between the arts and interpretation of our culture and landscape (Beck et al., 2018). 

So how do I interpret this “gift of beauty” that nature has through art? I sense this gift through two main art forms, which are music and visual arts. As mentioned in the Unit 02’s blog post, there are different types of learners and I myself am an auditory learner. Thus, learning and listening through music is most likely to grab my attention and evoke strong emotions and opinions on subjects—especially that of nature. The use of music in nature interpretation programs is a strong source of eliciting this emotional response as music works in three special ways: words can stick into the minds of listeners, songs paint pictures in the imagination, and often songs evoke emotions in listeners making them memorable (Beck et al., 2018). A song that exemplifies all three of these traits is one that I have loved for a very long time is Joni Mitchell’s, ‘Big Yellow Taxi’. If you haven’t heard this song before I highly recommend you take a listen while focusing on the lyrics, it holds a very important message about the environment!

Similarly, representation of nature through visual arts is another useful tool in evoking emotional responses from individuals. Visual arts can be used in innovative ways to enhance park grounds and view artist’s realities of nature from different perspectives. The beauty of visual arts is that you can see interpretations of nature throughout centuries of time. There are bound to be differences but what is truly remarkable is how artists from different centuries can capture the same essence of a landscape. For instance, both of the paintings below capture a similar nature of The Marne river in France—that being its undeniable warmth.

Aw, I’m glad you enjoyed it, nonny! They have great studying music so I highly recommend them often :> 

I love Studio Ghibli! But I will admit I have not seen all their movies sadly! I’ve heard Grave of Fireflies is fantastic but unfortunately it’s one of their movies still in my “to watch” list, ahaha! 

I may end up sounding Basic but Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke are all must-sees in my opinion! Ponyo is also a fantastic movie and is super feel good; it’s hard to be sad while watching it.

- Favourite movies: Ponyo. Star Wars IV, V, and VI before they were updated with CGI, although I definitely enjoyed the newest one. Big Hero 6! I watched that twice yesterday, although I was doing things at the same time.

- Favourite tv shows: Star Trek: TNG, Babylon 5. I know those are old but they're what I grew up with and they make me feel at home.

- Favourite holiday: Christmas and Chanukah. I don't celebrate it in a big way but I love all the lights and decorations.

- Things i do well: I can actually make pretty decent food from scratch although I rarely bother.

- Things i need to practice more: Playing piano. I pretty much have to relearn 13 years of work because I didn't do it for so long plus my left hand doesn't work like it once did and I basically have to relearn muscle memory on that side.

- Favourite song: I don't really have one. They change literally every few minutes. But for types of music I have some firm favourites. I love classical piano and orchestral music. Sound tracks with similar types of music. Plus most Disney soundtracks because they're so singable.

- Places i want to visit: Too many! Most of the UK, Israel to see my husband's family, Japan, Australia, and anywhere my mutuals are. Too bad we can't all go on some kind of group trip but the costs of that would be too much. I don't think any of us are rich haha.

-Favourite part of last year: I watched Yuuri on Ice thanks to someone I used to work with, which led to reading fanfiction, which led to fan art, and both of those led to Tumblr and to meeting my wonderful mutuals. My year has been crazy and you have all saved my sanity.

- Something sad that happened last year: This, is the first time I've shared this so publically, but a few of you know already. My dad passed away on December 4.

- When i get up in the morning i like to:  feed my pets and myself and take Lily out. Seriously. Technically those are chores but they're actually enjoyable ones. Plus after taking Lily out I can watch something while I eat my breakfast.

- Favourite drink: Tea. I'll spare you all the detailed list of tea :D

- Something new i’d like to learn this year: It's not exactly new but I want to continue to learn French even though I no longer live in a French speaking place.

justify why their xenophobic ass cut his performance 

expose him to criticism for singing in japanese instead of korean

give him a storyline as the japanese dude but then had to cut him out because he talked about mnet making him sing in japanese (aka shaded them) in front of the judges

make life harder for him (*whispers* bc they hate him)

for team battles:

didn’t show how be mine team 2 chose kenta as center despite showing all of the other groups’ centers

cut be mine team’s performance (they literally skipped to the end) and kept focusing on other trainees during kenta’s (and ponyo ofc) parts

gave the person with the most votes in team battles an interview except for kenta they didn’t even show his reaction they gave alpaca and tiptoe a teacher/student story instead which is great but why ONLY them????

showed how leaders and centers were chosen in position battles EXCEPT for spring day they never showed how they chose leader which was coincidentally kenta then too wow is it just me or is something weird here hahahaha

the thing that happened in be mine happened in spring day too except it was more obvious because kenta only had like two parts this time

during his parts the camera cut to the audience and the other trainees without doing that stupid repeating thing mnet does like five times (see: dongho in bil)

for comparison see how well they edited bjy’s vocal parts giving him a nice small box for eunki to comment that he’s handsome and not stealing the spotlight from him

they only used him for reactions shots and never gave him screentime for things that mattered like idk performances and skill and the one time he did get a storyline he was the antagonist to daniel’s protagonist

The preposterous adventures of Agust D the mermaid hunter and his half-lamb half-cookie companion Jeon Jungkook, including the stories of the prince of the air searching for his wings and how the Yin and the Yang found their balance

Summary: No matter what, Agust D will attend Kumamon’s concert!! Even if he needs to associate with the weirdest creatures in the neighbourhood for that!

Chapter 1/10: Don’t judge a book by its cover

The second-hand shop smelled like dust and naphthalene. The platinum blond man had stopped minding it after a while. His black coat sometimes brushed against a table, nearly knocking over the ugly little glassware on it. He had his hands in his pockets, searching with his eyes for a certain object: a copy of 8 1/2. The movie was a classic he absolutely wanted to watch. But when your TV only has a videotape player, it becomes a bit complicated to be an intellectual. Because Agust D was an intellectual, no matter what his appearance was hinting at, he loved to watch unknown movies and read rare books found in little libraries.

He was searching in a big basket full of European objects when he stumbled upon an old newspaper from the WWII, that was written in Deutsch. As he didn't speak Deutsch he only looked at the pictures, be it the Nazi flag on the front page or the ladies in fur coats on a C&A advertisement a few pages further.

At that moment, the radio that was playing in the background caught his attention.

"… And now for the music news. The anticipated annual concert of Kumamon in Kumamoto has been announced to be held this year on August the 15th. Several thousand of people are expected to come as…"

He slowly put down the propaganda newspaper. Kumamon, the best apple cheeks ever, the black bear of his life, was about to hold a concert. He had to be a part of it!! However, Kumamoto was a long way from Seoul and he didn't have enough money to afford the trip…

A memory from a few days ago resurfaced. He was eating in the Snail, with the TV turned on the News.

"… Let's finish with a minor news item. The billionaire Mr. Shi Hyuk Bang made a public announcement. He's offering 10 million Won to whoever will bring him a mermaid before he takes his last breath. Mr. Bang has been known for producing several world popular songs since…"

Here was his money!

Forgetting momentarily about 8 1/2, he decided to search for clues about mermaids, not even bothering to wonder if they actually existed. As he was already here, he looked around in the second-hand shop. He soon found a VHS with what was probably a mermaid on the cover: it had a human head and a fish body, Agust D couldn't be wrong. So he ended up buying Ponyo on the cliff by the sea…

Later, after having spent the evening with Miguel and Estrella, he finally watched the movie, sat on a chair and half lying on his dining table, Estrella keeping him company. With the first words came the realisation it was the original version without subtitles. As a fan of a Japanese celebrity, Agust D knew a bit of Japanese but definitely not enough to understand what was being said, notably the crucial fact that Ponyo… is a goldfish.

When he woke up the day after, he realised he must have fallen asleep a bit after the old people had appeared, as he couldn't remember anything after. What he retained from the movie were those two facts, that he judged to be enough to go mermaid hunting: mermaids are the size of a fish and you need a little boy to catch them.

Agust D checked the Snail before his departure. He had quickly put up a plan: he would head to Busan and find a little boy there, before going to the sea to catch a mermaid with the said little boy. Estrella was enthusiastically supporting the whole idea.

After a few hours on the road, the Snail stopped, the cries of seagulls welcoming them to the city of Busan. The summer weather was almost too hot and the blue sky almost blinding. There were fewer people than in Seoul but they also seemed more alive. It was a nice change.

A new problem occurred. How do you get your hands on a kid?

Miguel needed to go to a grocery store, so they all headed to one and Agust D checked the magazines, hoping to find one about kid hunting. He only found a magazine for young parents, called Nido. That would probably be enough. He bought it and paid for Miguel's expenses.

Back to the Snail, they all read the magazine. It was promoting mashed carrots and the importance of learning games. There was also a tutorial to build wooden boxes.

Agust D didn't need to think too long about it. Carrots were the cheapest, so carrots it would be.

Too lazy to actually cook the vegetable, Agust D just hanged one from the bale he had quickly gone buy at the end of a string and let it alone, suspended in the middle of a narrow street, while he was hiding being a trash can a bit further away.

After what seemed to be a never-ending wait - despite Estrella constant support, - a shadow suddenly jumped on the carrot. Realising he would be too slow to actually jump on his prey, Agust D chose another strategy and instead threw another carrot. The black lightning jumped on it once again but this time it was caught by its collar.

Under a mass of black hair, two big eyes looked up at Agust D, while rabbit's teeth were frantically nibbling on the carrot. It looked close enough to a kid, it would do.

Against all his expectations, the kid talked.

"Ew, is that you who reeks like that?"

Agust D rose an eyebrow, not understanding what the boy was talking about.

"What's your name kid?"

"I'm not talking to some disgusting beggar, let go."

"I'm not a bear guard, I'm Agust D. Anyway, that's not important. I'm taking you to mermaid hunting."

"What?!" The kid asked, his eyes getting even bigger than before, while his eyebrows furrowed.

It was harder than Agust D had calculated. However as he noticed the carrot had been gulped down once again, he tried another approach after noticing a restaurant at the end of the street.

"Hey how about that: I'm buying you lamb skewers and then you help me catch a mermaid."

The other took the time to think about it seriously, then he looked up again.

"If there's food, I'm in. I'm Jungkook."
