The woman before her had said something but Nell had only caught pieces, like a faulty radio. “I’m sorry, what did you say?” Had Nell only imagined the words Hill House, or had the woman truly said them? She seemed vaguely familiar … had Nell seen her before? “Are you a colleague of Steves?” She wasn’t sure why that thought came to her. Maybe Nell had seen her at one of those book signings where people asked her brother about ghosts and he lied for money. Maybe she had been at the one Nell crashed a few days ago and that’s why she looked familiar. Nell shook her head as if trying to shake away the fog that weighed her down and left her confused.

“Would it surprise you to know I’ve never felt it? Grief that is. Regret sure. Loss, a few times. Unease? Yes, but grief?” He pauses for a moment. “I don’t think I have or I haven’t been close enough to anyone to feel it.”

❝ it's like talking to a wall. only you get more from a wall. ❞ / hauntfcrged
The Scarecrow threw there head back in laughter. Their hat falling off their head to reveal a gaping hole where his skull should be. Straw poking out as his laughter roared through the area. It was harsh - almost a bit unworldly.
"AHHAHAHHA!" He thought it was hilarious - extremely so. Then again, a wall could talk if you knew how to do things right. The wood could tell so many stories. So could the paint, but no one wanted to hear them. Why would they anyways? It wasn't like most cared.
"And here I thought you'd be as dull dull dull as the rest." He moved to lean forward, his eyes narrowing. "My mistake."

“No one is allowed in or around that house.” His words came out harsh, perhaps harsher than he really meant and almost immediately he felt guilty for snapping. But Hugh had lost count of the number of people who tracked him down to try and get access to Hill House - paranormal investigators wanting to write a book or film a show who promised him a cut of the money, random people with theories of mold or toxic fumes who claimed they would ‘find the truth’ of what happened, even a bold few accused him of murder and hiding evidence - so many people, who all had no clue the horror he was saving them from. Hugh let out a tired sigh and shook his head. He had heard a little about the Warrens who were apparently pretty popular in the paranormal world. It didn’t matter if they were legit or not, the answer was the same. It would always be the same. “Look, I’m sorry, but I won't change my mind on this. No one goes in that house.”

"Well," there was a pause, "I am never alone. There is always someone snooping around in my business. Always spying on me. Doesn't matter where I go. If memory serves me correctly, it might be a family member." He shrugged. "Could be others, but I don't really know how many people want me dead. More want me alive, but . . . that's how it is."

Righteous people always think they're right. They cry over a lion shot by poachers, but they also cry over an antelope killed by a lion. They always need martyrs and villains, Davids and Goliaths, to feel the strength of their faith and the power of their God. Righteous people see the forest but they refuse to see what it's grown on.
"In this world, everyone is someone's food, Lorraine. And I'm still a pacifist, so, please, don't try to appeal to me with duty and serving." She was probing him, trying to get to his humanity or his soul, trying to find something worth saving, although there was no one and nothing to save. Of course, she came prepared this time with the information she had been given or had gathered about him. She needed to know him in order to push his buttons and sympathize with the antelope.
How did it come to be? "I found it, the entrance to Hell. And I entered. And I was welcomed, I was taken, and opened, and scrutinized, and understood, and approved. And it was agony. The only right thing your holy book says about Hell is 'weeping and gnashing of teeth'. You can't lie when you scream from pain in every particle of your being. And then I was pushed back through the womb, and it closed behind me. I am Professor Stanley Robert Sands, PHd, forged in the Gehenna. Do you still think you have a say in the matter? Because I think, you should tremble."
She had taken the time, between their first meeting and this one, to do her research. To read over the files that had been provided to her by the military intelligence officers that were involved in this case, as well as doing her own studies into the man (or the shell of the man, depending on what she believed to be true) that sat in front of her. A man of learning, but not of faith: ironic, given his chosen field of study. The nature and history of religion across the world. A husband, though, rumor had it, philanderer, despite his marriage vows, and family to provide for. That was perhaps the least relevant of the details she'd absorbed, and she was not here to pass judgment ... but it was something that she could never understand.
Marriage vows were sacred, and even if one was not religious, and did not believe in union of souls, the idea of that kind of betrayal of a loved one ... it was near unfathomable to her.
Of course, what he had done to his wife, after his ... psychotic break, or possession, whatever it was that had happened to him? That was heartbreaking. What life would there be for him, if -- once, they had found a way to free him?
Her thumb pressed against the rosary beads in her palm again, a silent prayer on repeat in the back of her thoughts as she tried to keep her inner thoughts and emotions from being on open display. Sympathy was only something the entity would prey on.
Witnesses.
Pride, and vanity. "There are easier ways to get attention, Professor. Ones that don't cost the lives of men and women doing their duty and serving their country." She couldn't help but remember how close she had come to spending her life alone. Raising her daughter, alone, with nothing but a folded flag and a medal to remember Ed by. Her lips thinned. Back from hell. "This ... rebirth, that you experienced. How did it come to be? Surely, that's a story worth telling? After all, how often do any of us have the ability to remember our entry into this world?"

He sighed and chuckled, "No cost. No contract." She was still afraid of him and he was able to understand why. To encounter the Jihnn in his initial form was really not the best way to make an acquaintance with him, but he couldn't change the way it had happened. For ages and ages, he had managed to conceal his true nature from mortals, but she just stumbled into his black-and-gold enormous self. Something was strange about her, she had a destiny that was still writing itself.
"That's the Jihnn power," he spread his hands, "I know what I need to know when I need to know it. That's how I grant wishes. Do you think that I just pulled this tulip out of the air? It grew somewhere." Kabir crossed his arms on his chest which kinda made him look like a canonical genie. "But it wasn't your wish, it was mine, so, I'm still waiting. What do you want?" He was also curious, how people reacted to his offer usually told a lot about them.
Allah. The name given to God. She recognized that much, even if she had only some knowledge of the faith. She recognized, too, the hesitation that came as he spoke of his morality. It struck her as decidedly human. How often had she doubted her own self, her own faith -- even her own sanity.... especially at times like this. She found herself reaching out, to catch the offering of the flower as it floated towards her, the feel of it somehow shockingly solid. Tangible. Real. She realized, then, she'd expected it to vanish into a puff of smoke, as if it had never been there. Its' scent was delicate, and beautiful.
A soft gasp escaped, and it took an effort to keep from drawing away, as his form shifted, and shrank, settling into a man that looked ... well. Not normal. But nearly so. "You look ... " Human. She couldn't think of a way to say that, that sounded in any way polite, so she didn't try. "No tricks? No ... cost, or contract?" She almost felt guilty asking, but should she not be wary? "Kabir, how - how did you know my name?"

“I’ve never been one for sentiment on the dead.” At least, in the terms that he could remember. There were bad years, ones he tried to forget, but it was not due to the fact of shame or regret. No, it was because that person? It wasn't who he wanted to be. It wasn't who he was anymore and he had worked tirelessly to be better. At least in his mind.

"Being pulled in several directions is never fun. It's taken me years to get where I am. To focus on what I want and not just what they want." More or less, though sometimes it seemed like the less part. Ky'lar still was at their beck and call when it came to it, however. He still had duties he couldn't avoid.
In the end, not much had changed - just how he had went about it in all reality. About how he maneuvered and no doubt created the changed that he wanted. It was always a means to an end. Even if he wasn't sure if he could ever fully break free of them. Not that he wanted to at any rate.
"When it comes down to it, I think everything that they've done and will do is necessary." Not exactly, but it sounded right . . . even if it was hollow.

Lee nodded, almost absently, before shaking her head, her brows furrowing tight. She had stopped questioning the how's and why's of the things she knew long ago - if she had ever questioned it at all. Now knowing where it came from … maybe there was a reason she had never thought too hard about it. “Anything you might know would be appreciated.” Lee had spent the whole drive here going over the questions she had, but she still felt awkward saying it all out loud. “I was wondering if you know anything about dolls being used in spell work. Particularly Satanic magic with the dolls being used as hosts.” She briefly glanced up, already anticipating Loranne dismissing her like Carter had. The thought of her former boss brought with it a deep feeling of guilt. It was for his daughter that she was here too - what had those dolls done to their minds? How could she ensure that Ruby was safe?
"Don't be silly, you came all this way, the least I can do is offer you some tea, and listen to what you have to say," Lorraine assured the young woman, her smile easy, and comfortable. "I can't guarantee that I'll have anything helpful to offer, but -- I'm happy to try." While it wasn't exactly easy to stifle her visions, or her gifts (not that she often tried to), they also weren't something she could always get to work, even when she really wanted them to. Or, they'd work in ways that weren't exactly helpful. "Sometimes, though, if I do see, or ... feel something, it won't always have anything to connect to, to give it meaning, right away."
"But I expect you know a little bit about that, too."

Phel couldn't resist the urge to chuckle, copying the girl's motions with a painted fingernail, one that would appear clawed with every flicker that the psychic was clearly seeing. "It's not generally considered polite to call people evil, or to make that sign when you see them. Us damned have feelings too you know."
Not that something this minor would cause her any kind of distress, but her grandchild, well that was an entirely different story. The kid was sensitive, and enjoyed playing in places just like this. "Not that I'm particularly bothered, but my little one would be, and we've been making so much progress. I'd hate for her to have a setback."
The young woman spun sharply on her heel, a gasp escaping as she whirled around towards the source of the voice inside of what had been a long abandoned tiny chapel on the edge of the cemetery's grounds, a reactive gesture made to cross herself as her attention came to focus on the ... woman? that had seemed to come out of nowhere, out of nothing, but the shadows. Hellfire? A sharp swallow follows, as she resisted her initial reaction to bolt.
The stranger seemed solid -- which wasn't exactly common, for the apparitions that often showed themselves to her, but there was something about the image that appeared to flicker, like there was a shadow of a frame, of another shape, or form, that danced around, and above her, and her facial features flickered like the pages of a stop motion flip book, between darkly beautiful and something -- something filled with shadows, and painfully sharp contours, and something hollow. "What -- did you say -- " Hellfire? "Rude?"
