Album Review - Tall Tales & Fables by Haunted Like Human [2021]

On October 15th, 2021, Tall Tales & Fables was released by Haunted Like Human, a duo from Nashville, TN. The group is comprised of Cody Clark and Dale Chapman, who work together to craft an album full of gorgeous songs about loss, love, and longing.

I originally found out about this album while scrolling through TikTok. The small clip that I had heard immediately had me hooked and I made a very abrupt decision to review it for this week.

The storytelling on this album is some of the most gorgeous writing I've experienced in a long time. It uses incredibly clever imagery without feeling like it is getting lost in itself. You do not lose track of the concepts and what the bigger picture is. This is best exemplified by songs like "September" and "Ghost Towns".

I also found the vocals of both members of the duo to bring a strange form of comfort. I had never heard their voices until listening to this album, but it felt like I had known them forever. The balance that they hold should be studied. Each knows when one should shine more than other and that lends itself to an album clearly full of love and care. I think "Run Devil Run" and "Bruised Feet" may be some of the best examples of their voices and the control they have over them.

My personal favorite songs on this album were "Run Devil Run" and "Whistling Tree". They each had enough of this darker tone and drama to them. They are both incredibly cinematic, for lack of a better term. Each tickled my brain in just the right way that I keep finding myself humming the melodies from time to time throughout my day. I'm also a sucker for strong rhythm/clapping sections, as heard in "Whistling Tree".

I only had one complaint with this album, and it has more to do with personal preference than a genuine flaw on the part of the creators. I found the production of this album to be a tad repetitive. This may be due to a lack of risks taken on the different tracks. There were times when I felt like I had heard certain songs before. It could make the album feel less distinct, which isn't fair when the writing is done so well. (All of this could have just been due to my mindset when starting the album; always remember individual variables!)

Overall, I found this album to be a brilliantly crafted example of all that makes folk music amazing. Stories composed by clever lyrics full of imagery that feels like you're watching it instead of listening to it. Those who are fans of a more classic folk sound will love this album. I think of those who love artists like The Crane Wives or The Amazing Devil, granted that Haunted Like Human may not be as dramatic with some of their production.

Thomas huanted look in his eye: Everyhting. Bruce: I'm scared Dad. Thomas: You should be, especially after what happened to the Arkhams. On a night just like this, they died in this very room- Bruce: WHAT!? Thomas: Yes, the Arkhams used to own this manor before the Waynes bought it after their death. In fact, I was possessed while lying on the very same bed you are currently in. The Ghost Boy- at the time, he was a teenager, but now he's aged as you saw- appeared to free me, but if he hadn't, I would have died. Martha: THOMAS Bruce: *crying* I DON'T WANT TO DIE Thomas: And I didn't want to fall in love with an immortal when I was fourteen only to have him dump me after our kiss, but that's how things go. Anyway, good night, Bruce. I pray you don't become a dead thing skin suit! Papa loves you :D

You know what would be hilarious? 

Constantine comes into one of those meetings as he sometimes does every blue moon. Though the proper word would be storms into a meeting and practically slams a whole stack of papers down. “Can someone bloody explain to me why the American-fucking-government is trying to go to war with the fucking Infinite Realms?!” 

The Justice League is of course alarmed and confused- and also John weren’t you in Hell?! Yeah, he was, where the fuck do you think he found out about this? 

Now if you’ll excuse him he’s going back to the House of Mysteries with his now haunted trench coat. John, John Constantine what the fuck do you mean by that? No don’t just leave, don’t leave this mess just for them- JOHN!

so what would the primes think of humans?

it kinda depends on who you ask but in general they find them just. very tiny. and squishy looking.

some like onyx and quintus find them kinda cute. others like prima and amalgamous think they're kinda ugly but in a cute way. liege just thinks they're plain ugly. he learns to appreciate them in his own way but he never stops finding them a little weird.

solus is impressed by how much things they can do and how much destruction they can create when they're so tiny and their technology so lacking. their tech is soooo primitive but she's making grabby hands at some of those explosives to see what they can do.

zeta is grateful solus cannot in fact get her hands on any of those explosives.

and megatronus is for once glad he's incorporeal. just the thought of how careful he would have to be to not step on them at all times stresses him out.
