Haunted States of America: Tennessee
Tumblr media
Mysterious Knoxville: Ghost Stories, Monster Tales, and Bizarre Incidents from the "Gateway to the Smokies" (1999) by Charles Edwin Price
To be honest, we're not really sure who the face in the moon is supposed to be. The summary doesn't give much help:
Knoxville, Tennessee, is a haunted city. Ghosts roam its streets, its old theaters, its graveyards, even the caverns that snake beneath its byways. Knoxville is also a city beset by mysterious beasts--from enigmatic cat monsters to big hairy creatures that are said to roam the town by night. Knoxville is a city of legend. There are persistent rumors of an "Old Knoxville" buried beneath the present city, and there is a famous downtown cemetery where there are gravestones, but no bodies. In Mysterious Knoxville, Charles Edwin Price explores this East Tennessee city, looking for the mysterious and the bizarre. And he finds it in the tale of a whistling ghost, a piano-playing ghost, a multitude of spooks that haunt the University of Tennessee campus, a ghostly mule on Gay Street, ghosts that haunt mobile homes and scare visitors half to death, a UT professor who tried to raise the dead in a Knoxville church, sundry witches and phantoms, and the unsettling day at the beginning of the twentieth century when Gay Street started to move up and down as if a gigantic mole was burrowing beneath the pavement. With a firm eye to history, Price tells his chilling stories with perception and good humor--all of which add up to a book that can be read and reread for years to come.
The face in the moon looks even creepier when the colors are inverted, as they show on the back:

The haunted Bijou
Tumblr media
Many places in Knoxville are old historic sites. Many have ties to tragic events in the history of Knoxville, and still bear that spiritual stain to this day. One such place is the Bijou Theatre. It is one of the oldest buildings in Knoxville and was used over the years as a brothel, a hospital, and most famously a Theatre.
It was built in 1817 as the Lamar House hotel. Once the Civil war began, it became a hospital that treated both sides of the war. During this time, it saw many violent deaths within its walls, including the death of General Sanders, who is still said to haunt the building. Sanders was a Civil War general who was killed in the Bijou Theatre during the Battle of Knoxville in 1863. His ghost is said to wander the theater, especially the balcony, and he has been seen by many people, including actors, staff, and visitors.
A young woman's ghost is said to haunt the Bijou Theatre. She is said to have been a dancer who died in a fall from the balcony during a performance. Her ghost is said to be seen wearing a white dress, and she has been heard crying in the theater.
A group of soldiers' ghosts are said to haunt the Bijou Theatre. They are said to have been killed in the theater during the Battle of Knoxville. Their ghosts are said to be seen marching through the theater, and they have been heard shouting and fighting.
These are just a few of the ghosts that are said to haunt the Bijou Theatre. There have been many reports of paranormal activity in the theater, including sightings of ghosts, hearing voices, and feeling cold spots.
Have you had any experiences here? Let me know below!

welcome to marina, LANA JAMESON ( woman, she/her ) ! they are a TWENTY SIX year old who has lived on the island for THREE YEARS. word on the street is they’re currently living in TOWER HILL and works as a INSTAGRAM / EDITORIAL MODEL. everyone also says they look a lot like SADIE SOVERALL. what do you think?
PINTEREST
“below the stage the seats are empty. the theatre is dark. why do you keep acting?” — Charles Bukowski, Come On In!: New Poems
HISTORY:
lana grew up in a big house in albany, NY. i picture it w dark oak floors n lots of light furniture. albums framed on walls. mayb some rolling stone covers too frm way bk when of the bands her dad’s label signed. kind of like… a rock star palace w no evidence of children at all. i think i described it best in one of lana’s self paras once when i said the garden ws “as lavish as it was unloved”
lana’s mum victoria (vic) ws a music journalist w a pretty fruitful career ahead of her when she met lana’s dad richard (rich). his record label ws jst starting out, founded on the coattails of his rich best friend’s (jensen peters) investment w his other best friend (who he jst calls knoxville). it rocketed to success when they signed poppy injects, a rock band w an electric stage presence, n victoria ws drawn to the glitz n glamour of a man tht ws at the helm of his aspiring industry. their love ws very impulsive, all or nothing right frm the start, n it ws almost like she ws mre in love w his accomplishments n what he represented than him
anyway so jameson records repped a few big rock bands bk in the eighties, altho poppy injects r who they’re mostly known fr, namely bc of hw brightly they crashed n burned. they were a big chart success bt the lead singer hd quite an intense struggle w heroin (wsnt rly subtle abt it either while he ws in the public eye as u cn probably imagine frm such an on-the-nose band name) n he ws always in n out of the papers. it eventually brought down his career n it ws a big publicity nightmare
lana pretty much… grew up around figures like this throughout childhood. rly troubled characters who wld kind of… b extremely volatile n destructive abt their troubles. the jameson house was kind of an open one as welcoming clients went n a lot of parties took place there. a lot of the time musicians wld b snorting lines in the kitchen when she wnted to grab a bowl of cereal fr breakfast n it was just. a very strange environment fr a child to grow up in
her parents always kind of jst… didn’t like her much. her older brother caleb ws unplanned bt they sort of welcomed the surprise more bt… quickly realised they weren’t cut out fr parenthood n then when lana came as another surprise 3 yrs later they didn’t even try to hide their resentment abt the situation. her mum ws actually booked in to have an abortion bt cldnt go through with it at the last minute. once when lana asked her why shes so cold towards her she jst turned her head frm her dresser, looked at her, told her abt this n said “idk why i didn’t go”. lana didn’t kno wht to say to tht so she jst left her room n closed the door
(dissociation tw) bc of this growing up lana adopted this weird like…. she didn’t rly kno what it ws bt it ws a delusion of sorts where she thought she ws a ghost. she’d jst sort of… drift around the halls w noone acknowledging her n sometimes she ws jst convinced she wsnt actually there or they cldnt see her n she ws jst haunting the house frm a previous family
the one saving grace tho tht sort of?? gt her thru this n made her feel Seen ws caleb. lana quite genuinely hs always thought the sun shines out of her older brothers ass like she jst thinks. hes the best person in the entire world. wld b rly bewildered if anyone questioned tht. he wld always look out for her in the zoo they called a home n cut the crusts off her sandwiches (he’d cook fr them most of the time bc their parents were too busy/didn’t care to) n sometimes wld even sleep at the bottom of her bed curled up like a guard dog. it ws always lana n caleb n his best friend tommy against the world in tht house (tommy lived next door n was always over bc he had very strict parents including a military father tht he found suffocating)
SO when caleb n tommy announced tht they’d signed up to the army lana ws understandably…….. completely blindsided. she ws rly upset tht they were leaving bt she tried not to b mad at them n made them promise theyd b safe n back as soon as possible. she even asked if they cld somehow take her w them n they were jst like :/ it doesn’t work that way luv x
(death tw, ptsd tw, grief tw, trauma tw, hospitalisation tw, drugs tw) anyway caleb ended up getting discharged under grounds of severe ptsd when he witnessed tommy die in an explosion tht took place in a shock raid. caleb returned home sans tommy bt he was never the same after tht. he’s been in and out of hospital twice nw n he’s currently dipped off the radar after starting to use. lana kind of felt like two of her brothers died out there in a way n jst like tht it wasn’t them vs the world any mre, it was jst her. she doesn’t talk abt this tho. when she feels the urge to cry she usually jst smiles
ANYWAY whew tht rly…. took a dark turn there….. chuckles nervously at hw sad lana’s life is bt it’s fine it’s all fINE!!!!!!! ok. so on a mre lighthearted note the jameson family r pretty well off n bc of her relation to such a big music industry figure she’s hung out w a fair few relatively high rep ppl thru her teens. mostly kids of celebrities n stuff like tht. she amassed kind of an instagram following mainly fr her style (lots of fur cuff trimmed jackets bt then also jst…. a wild combination of everything honestly. pastel faux fur coats, seventies style platforms, flame red cowboy boots, pink fishnet tights n glitter used like highlight Everywhere) n bc she’s undeniably Very Pretty
(trauma tw) after caleb got back he was rly withdrawn n depressed. he shut lana out n was kind of harsh to her a lot of the time, always telling her to leave him alone or pushing her away. it didnt help either tht lana had a rly traumatic experience w some of her dad’s colleagues at the label when she ws 16 n he was away n she cldnt even tell him abt it once he was bk bc of his own traumas. she kind of jst shut it all in n kept it to herself
(hypersexuality tw) this obviously?? made her spiral a lot. she was already a girl tht loved sex (she’d only rly done foreplay before tho) but since her trauma it got…. completely out of hand. it got to a point where she couldnt rly go 2 days without it, probably not even 1. her lowest point has probably been scrolling thru craiglist for anonymous encounters n meeting up w strangers on there fr a quick fuck jst for the thrill even tho it’s insanely dangerous n she cld wind up getting herself killed. it’s v clear at this point tht she has a sex addiction whether she’s ever admitted it or not. it kind of… almost mingled w tht same feeling she used to get when she ws younger of being a ghost?? like she jst. only rly feels Real when she’s being touched
ummm DISASTROUS romantic history honestly... riddled w beastly men and intense situationships n toxic cheating dynamics just. a lot.
went to uni for ballet n joining a travelling dance company bt. was kicked out fr excessive inebriation tht got in the way of her rehearsal times etc. now she just kind of insta models n does a few editorial shoots for realisation par n lingerie brands n such
PERSONALITY:
always smells vaguely of wild cherries or strawberry starburst or jst the candy aisle in general. if she ws a vinyl record she’d b this one n she’d only play good vibrations by the beach boys, dancing on my own by robyn, play that funky music by wild cherry, femme fatale by the velvet underground n (i can’t get no) satisfaction by the rolling stones
growing up lana was always a huge social butterfly. knew everyone n everyone knew her. she ws one of those girls tht ws kind of impossible to ignore or forget. very animated, always made u feel like u were the centre of the universe whenever she spoke to u, always made it feel like u were best friends even if ud only spoken to her once.
deliberately puts on tht kind of Magnetic Alluring Act tht femme fatales wear in movies w most ppl. kind of…. is always playing A Role of the person tht she wants to b seen as. womanhood as nonconsensual performance. chameleons to situations. feels like she’s performed as the vivacious n fun loving Lana Jameson fr so long tht she doesn’t rly kno who she is beneath tht bt she isn’t too keen to find out
she’s always been rly spontaneous n adventurous. always doing something weird n wild every weekend. she has ten thousand ridiculously absurd n chaotic stories
uncontrollably flirty. boundlessly confident. cld make a joke out a paper bag n her comedy is sometimes surreal / absurd. she tends to laugh when she feels like crying n has a smile brighter than a ray of texas sunshine
always dapples her fingers thru the breeze when she’s driving in a car w the window down. she almost always has some sort of sweet on her, whether it’s sour haribo cherries or strawberry lollipops
she adores david bowie n prince n madonna n anyone tht’s a vintage style icon w little care fr what ppl think
she’s had like 8472493874 ‘relationships’ n 99% of them haven't lasted beyond a month / hav been terrible / hav seen her being treated badly / she’s cheated on them
ummmm ya lets plot sexies

Everytime I think about WKUK, I think of my buddy J and how we'd sit in the back of the art room and talk about certain skits while she was hungover from partying the night before and just throwing together an uninspired art project to look busy. I'm also haunted by the memory of us both wanting to bone Johnny Knoxville but she wanted to bone him behind a dumpster while listening to "A-B-C, easy as one two three..." 😂 Good times, good times.

#3: The Louvin Brothers - Tragic Songs of Life (1956)
Genre(s): Country, Bluegrass
Tumblr media
The third album on the 1001 Albums list is the haunting Tragic Songs of Life, by The Louvin Brothers. Previously known for their gospel tunes, this was their first album of secular music, released on Capitol. As the title suggests, there is little Good News to be had on this one, presenting instead a collection of songs of heartbreak, loss, and murder. The songwriting credits are a mishmash of traditional tunes and originals penned by the Louvins and others. The hard transition to darker lyrical content was appropriate, as Ira Louvin was notorious for his violent temper, loose morals, womanizing, and heavy drinking, and as such was an ironic character in the world of country gospel (although perhaps more compelling when belting out pleas for divine forgiveness).
I've heard some songs by the Louvins before and am reasonably familiar with them, but this was my first time listening to one of their albums front to back. I'm glad I did. What an excellent album. This is my favorite kind of country: pure, haunting tales of murder and loss. Not an American flag or lifted pickup truck in sight; a thing of beauty. There's a real authenticity to be had here in the brothers' quavering close harmony. Ira's delivery in particular is chilling; you can tell he's lived more than his fair share of these topics. Charlie, meanwhile, is his perfect counterpoint, smiling along on the bottom end of the harmony and strumming his guitar. Their versions of the classic traditional tunes In The Pines and Knoxville Girl are standouts on the album and will send a chill down your spine. Keep In The Pines in the back of your head; we'll come back to this tune again in the (distant) future.
My only gripe with this inclusion is that, much like In The Wee Small Hours, it comes out of nowhere with no historical context. I very much would have liked to see a Hank Williams album on the list somewhere prior. I can take or leave a lot of early country recordings, but Hank is the load-bearing groundwork underneath all country recordings that followed and it seems shortsighted to omit him.
That being said, MUST you hear Tragic Songs of Life? Yes, without a doubt. This is a classic example of the murder balladry and songs of loss that foreshadow the outlaw country of the future, and is well worth your time. Tragic Songs of Life is a great example of why I'm doing this project: I own thousands of albums and have heard thousands more, but music is a bottomless pit and there are only so many hours in the day. I've spent the better part of the last decade working at an independent record store (and much longer as a collector and enthusiast), so there's a lot of music I'm *aware* of, but haven't heard. It's great to find some gems hidden in the plain sight of records I've bought and sold many times without hearing attentively and in full.
Like with most albums I don't own, I listened to this in hi-res on Qobuz. I'll note here that this album also sounds great in terms of fidelity. Really above par for the mid 50s. There are higher volume moments where you can hear slight tape distortion, as well as some other analog artifacts of the time throughout, but to me that adds character to the recording rather than detracting from the listening experience.
And that's all for today! Put your dancing shoes on, because our next album is The Wildest! by the one and only Louis Prima.

Cole Young is a broken soul hailing from a trailer park nestled within the mountains of Tennessee. His early years were marred by a father plagued with alcoholism and abuse. Yet, amidst the darkness, Cole found solace when his father would embark on long-haul trucking trips, leaving him to fend for himself. Armed with meager funds, he managed to scrape by. As time passed, Cole's trailer transformed into a haven for parties and unbridled debauchery, devoid of any supervision. At just sixteen, a reckless escapade led to his first brush with the law—grand theft and driving under the influence - after stealing his neighbors truck with a cab full of friends cheering him on. Thankfully, no one was harmed, and the charges were eventually dropped, thanks to remorseful tears and the promise of community service, which Cole had little intention of fulfilling.
At the age of seventeen, a fateful encounter at a pawn shop introduced Cole to his first bass guitar, which he cunningly acquired through a five-finger discount. Determined and self-taught, he immersed himself in music, dedicating countless hours to learning his favorite songs while balancing his partying escapades with friends. Eventually, tensions reached a boiling point when his father unexpectedly returned home one evening, finding the trailer overrun by intoxicated teenagers in the midst of a rager. It was on that night that Cole made a life-altering decision - packing his bags, he fled, once again borrowing his neighbor's recently renovated truck, and bidding farewell to Knoxville forever.
Destiny led him to Nashville, where a chance encounter at a bar introduced him to a band in need of a bassist. From that moment on, Cole's life took an unexpected turn. Within a week of meeting, he was welcomed into the band as their bassist, a position he has held ever since. Though he seldom glances back at his past in Knoxville, the scars of his tumultuous upbringing still haunt him, driving him to constantly evade the demons that have pursued him since childhood.

Haunted Market Square
The Old Market Square is a historic square in downtown Knoxville that has been around since the early 1800s. It is said to be haunted by the ghost of a woman who was murdered there in 1902.
The woman's name was Mary, and she was a young widow who lived in a boarding house on the square. She was known for her kindness and generosity, and she was well-liked by everyone who knew her.
One night, Mary was walking home from work when she was attacked and murdered. Her body was found in an alleyway near the square. The police never caught her killer, and her murder remains unsolved to this day.
Since then, there have been many reports of strange activity in the Old Market Square. People have reported seeing a woman's apparition walking the square at night. They have also heard her screams and seen her shadow on the walls of the buildings.
Some people believe that the ghost of Mary is still trying to find her killer. Others believe that she is simply a lost soul who is unable to move on. Whatever the case may be, the ghost of Mary is a reminder of the dark history of the Old Market Square.
Here is one story about a woman who encountered the ghost of Mary:
One night, a woman named Sarah was walking home from work when she saw a woman's figure standing in the middle of the Old Market Square. The woman was wearing a long white dress, and her hair was long and black. Sarah stopped and stared at the woman, but the woman didn't move. She just stood there, staring back at Sarah.
Sarah felt a chill run down her spine, and she quickly turned and ran away. She didn't look back, but she could still feel the woman's eyes on her.
Sarah never saw the woman again, but she never forgot her. She is convinced that she saw the ghost of Mary, the woman who was murdered in the Old Market Square.
If you are ever in the Old Market Square at night, be careful. You might just see the ghost of Mary.

When I was a child, my mother would sing me to sleep with a lovely dark hymn. I found out the name today. It was Knoxville Girl.
This whole time I was enchanted by my ma's beautiful voice and haunting lyrics I could only half-remember, and it was about a man murdering a girl for being pregnant with his child.
...This explains so much.

BAKER PETERS MANSION
Knoxville Tennessee
The mansion, now Baker Peters Jazz Club, is said to be haunted by Abner Baker, a former resident of the 1840 building. The mansion was inhabited by Dr. Baker’s family and several wounded Confederate soldiers whom he was helping during the Civil War. When the Union learned Dr. Baker was helping Confederates, they barged in and demanded the surrender of the soldiers, but Dr. Baker refused, ran upstairs and barricaded himself in his room. The Union soldiers shot through the door and killed him. The doctor’s son Abner then shot and killed the Union informer, Postmaster William Hall, and the postmaster’s allies then killed Abner. Abner’s ghost is said to remain in the building. In fact, there is a framed photo of his ghost in the jazz club. The ghost makes himself known by dropping glasses, turning lights on and off, moving objects, and whispering. Some witnesses have experienced cold chills and other phenomena. The door that was shot through by the Union soldiers is still in the establishment.

"This is Abner Baker and he's our ghost. He was a confederate soldier during the Civil War," said Cappiello as he pointed at a portrait of a young man on a fireplace mantel. "From what I've been told, he moves throughout the house. You'd hear the falling of pans in the kitchen and there was no one in the kitchen. The light fixtures would sometimes start swaying. I guess there are bad ghosts and good ghosts. He doesn't seem to be an angry ghost as far as we can tell." said Developer Tony Cappiello, who is cooking up a new life for the historic Baker Peters House in West Knoxville. He's renovating the upstairs of the home for a new restaurant that will feature a piano, cocktails, steaks, and a side-serving of ghost stories.

From fierce social commentary to haunting melodies and dancefloor anthems, we've got something for everyone. So crank it up and dive in! Jessica Wilde's new slab of social commentary 'Here Right Now' set to heavy soul funk will send you Wild(e)! Now I don't know what it is about Jessica but she's one of those artists who'll appear on the scene and just knows how to make great records. Either that or there's something in the local water supply. Here Right Now is a great track.  Listen  https://open.spotify.com/track/4tsKUiAMJpTxf5jxixr1oy?si=6884d1e000ae496a Loose beat poetry fused with ravaged vocals on new Michele Ducci single - 'Hic'! Italian artist Michele's new single, Hic, has an almost haunting quality about it in that it's raspy and whispering in your ear, but then again that's probably where the genius of it is. Hic entices you in and makes you want to listen further. I'm rather intrigued myself  Listen  https://open.spotify.com/track/5u7CX4aBIUAYXQz56KVqEB?si=66b100d72b3b4bc2 The video is just as intriguing as the song, has that traveling feel to it. Watch https://youtu.be/osYPkSaWNo0?si=fi68PbA6wRMP8xZF Kaya Hoax flourishes with hypnotic new single "Kicker" out today! And I am absolutely hooked on it myself. Kaya's rapping and singing combo definitely gets my attention right from the start. I haven't heard a vast amount from her but even I think she's got quite a bit going for her. Kicker is a gem Listen  https://open.spotify.com/track/6O02LLxNzLhHcPCidEOwjJ?si=b9835b0afc9c4fda Has that urban grittiness look to it which fits the mood of the song. A good video  Watch  https://youtu.be/u9qVsXIV14A Rich Ruth shares new single 'Crying In The Trees' + video - new album 'Water Still Flows' out June 21st on Third Man Records This is actually a really good track and is really powerful to. One of the things I enjoy about it is that it relies entirely on the rhythms made by the instruments. There’re no vocals whatsoever but it's how strongly everything comes together. I enjoy the slight gothic feel in the music  PERFORMANCE VIDEO https://youtu.be/-loX1IL3Az4 LISTEN HERE https://open.spotify.com/track/6O02LLxNzLhHcPCidEOwjJ?si=b9835b0afc9c4fda WATCH HERE https://youtu.be/-loX1IL3Az4 Pre-order Water Still Flows  HERE Listen to "No Muscle, No Memory"  HERE  & watch the Joseph Bird-directed music video  HERE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQTtB_U-hkQ&feature=youtu.be Rich Ruth US Tour Dates: 28/4: Fort Worth, TX - Tulips * 29/4: Oklahoma City, OK - Beer City Music Hall * 1/5: Baton Rouge, LA - Chelsea's Live * 3/5: Knoxville, TN - The Pilot Light ~ 4/5: Asheville, NC - Eulogy ~ 5/5: Winston-Salem, NC - The Ramkat * 8/5: Raleigh, NC - King's ~ 9/5: Charleston, SC - Music Farm * 10/5: Savannah, GA - Victory North * 22/6: Nashville, TN - The Blue Room ~ 25/6: Washington DC - Pearl Street Warehouse ^ 26/6: Philadelphia, PA - Johnny Brenda's ^ 27/6: Woodstock, NY - Colony ^ 28/6: Brooklyn, NY - Union Pool ~ 21/8: Bloomington, IN - The Bishop ~ 22/8: Chicago, IL - Constellation ~ 23/8: Goshen, IN - Ignition Music Garage ~ 25/8: Detroit, MI - Third Man Cass Corridor ~ ~ Headline Dates * w/ All Them Witches ^ w/ Mikaela Davis CONNECT WITH RICH RUTH: INSTAGRAM BANDCAMP YOUTUBE Website  Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso  Heard this today and it got my attention just like that, and I am fully impressed by it. Are ghosts real? Here are 7 of Knoxville, East Tennessee's most haunted places
Tumblr media
Ghosts can be so, well, ghostly. But several Knoxville buildings are known as the homes of spirits.
Here are the stories of some of Knoxville's most haunted spots, plus two scary East Tennessee spots:
Bijou Theatre
If any downtown Knoxville building should be haunted, it's the Bijou Theatre, formerly called the Lamar House. Completed around 1817, the 803 S. Gay St. building's been a tavern, hotel, storefront, Civil War hospital, brothel, restaurant and theater.
Civil War Union Gen. William P. Saunders died in the Lamar Hotel bridal suite. He'd been brought to the hotel turned Civil War hospital after he was shot during fighting Nov. 18, 1863.
But it's the spirits of others who've been heard or seen through the years. Footsteps, early morning flashes of light and a ghostly man walking up stairs have been reported. Items fall from or get moved around shelves. The spirit of a vaudeville-era technician has been heard.
