     esen gently pushes the door open.  “ I’M HOME! ”  he calls out to the only other resident of the building--the man he called father, kanda yuu.

     esen couldn’t quite remember how they had met--only that he could remember a falling apart building, && A CONCERNED KANDA helping him discover life.  discover, esen says, because HE HAD NO MEMORIES BEFORE THAT MOMENT.  kanda claims it was head trauma.  that often causes memories to be forgotten.  esen was apt to agree with him--like he did with most things.

     esen sets a basket down on the table of the very small tenement room, looking around for kanda.  upon seeing him, esen smiles happily, giving a small wave.  “ THERE WERE SOME WEIRD PEOPLE IN THE TOWN SQUARE, ”  esen informs kanda,  “ ITALIAN, i think.  their accent was a little funny.  but they gave me a bad feeling, so i came straight home once i left the grocery store. ”

     esen normally went out with kanda, but today he had begged to go out by himself.  he had been GOOD, in his head--with no missing memories, unlike the last few times, where esen had to be led back in confusion--so he had begged for it.

     unfortunately, esen hadn’t taken enough care to make sure he hadn’t been followed.  && WHY WOULD HE?  as far as he was concerned, he && kanda both were average people.

     allen’s gonna casually sit next to kanda’s bedside--alma, having gone for about thirty seconds--only to grimly say,  “ WE MATCH. ”

" a-alma. " kanda grips his arm that is turning more and more into a monstrous CLAW by the moment in hopes of somehow stopping himself. " run. alma you have to run! "

     “no,”  alma shakes their head, slowly approaching kanda after a moment of having to swallow that painful fear,  “not without you.”  this is stupid, alma thinks.  but alma can’t stop themself from approaching.  “you can beat it.  i know you can.”

     these time travel events seem to be MOST INCONVENIENT to just about everybody.  that’s why yuu has returned to the future.  he’s biting on his tongue, trying to not act like this alarms every inch of him, how his older self looks downright HORRIFIED, as if yuu picked the worst time ever to decide to come back.

     whatever.  like yuu cared.

     while the adults are talking, he’s planning on sneaking off.  to find his OWN way back.

“ tch. it’s good to see you too. ” but he’s trying to hide his smile.

     Her expression immediately softens, the smallest trace of a smile at the corners of his lips not going unnoticed. A smile of her own finds home on her face, and a hand reaches up to poke at his cheek. ❝Never said it wasn’t good to see you; it’s been too long.❞ A pause, a hint of mischief finding its way into her expression, and, ❝You have the slightest dimples when you smile, by the way.❞

" it will. " kanda's strong grip keeps esen still as he presses on the wounds. " keep your hand over it. don't let your guts fall out while i get help. "

     esen nods weakly, putting his hands over his wounds, pressing down on them as well.  he can feel his dark matter trying to work, trying to heal--but it’s not working fast enough.  “ AM I GOING TO DIE? ”  he asks softly, his vision going grey at the edges.

kanda rests his head on alma’s thigh. “ will you read to me? ”

     “ OF COURSE I WILL. ”  alma says softly, carding a hand through kanda’s hair for a brief moment, before picking up at the beginning of the next sentence;  “ ‘ideal && real clashed slightly as the sun lit up their figures against green hedges && creeper-laced house-fronts; for, though the whole troop wore white garments...’ ”

Kanda’s body won’t do all the work of healing or taking care of itself for him anymore, after all. Sure, his healing probably isn’t completely gone and his strength doesn’t simply vanish, but eventually it’ll catch up to him if he doesn’t even know how to deal with it.

❝  Infections and knowing what to do and what not to do for wounds that are gonna take longer to heal is serious business, an’ even just makin’ sure o’ things like managing pain and keeping muscles from getting wound up too tight can make a real world o’ difference on your performance! Its all related, and as a General that knowledge doesn’t benefit only you!  ❞

“...” An awkward silence was all he greeted with. Special eyes analyzing and only a target to be found by his cautious gaze-- the holy sword on its sheath, waiting for its owner’s commands to unleash its sacred powers. 

“A rather fine sword.” Finally said.

“I know your intentions are good, Kanda, but please take a moment to consider what you’re attempting to do. There are so many other things that you could be protecting him from-- but this? This is something that he’ll have to learn for himself. And I highly doubt that either Kuroh or Claire would ever intentionally hurt him.” Worst case scenario, one (or both) parties reject him, and he moves on with his life. Of course, rejection hurts, but it is a short lived pain --in most cases.

that’s funny because kanda has gotten very good at seeing only esen’s face.

     all esen can see is the person he’s not.  && he’s never met alma, only seen pictures of the ( HIGHLY OMITTED ) report he got.
