Samantha Cohen is attacked by the sugars as being weak, incapable etc. yet look at her resume
Chief of Staff to the global CEO of Rio Tinto
Co-Founder & Deputy Chair of The Queen's Green Canopy
Director of the Office of the Prime Minister: Downing Street
Chief Executive of Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council
Deputy and Assistant Private Secretary to HM The Queen
Communications Secretary to HM The Queen
Deputy Communications Secretary to HM The Queen
Assistant Communications Secretary to The Queen
I haven’t seen those comments. I Donny understand why they would be mad at Sam. Sam keep Meghan’s reputation afloat during her first year, which was an amazing pr feat given all the dad drama and celebrity hijinks.
It was impressive while it was happening and it’s even more impressive now that we know everything Sam had been keeping a lid on. They were planning Megxit since the wedding, and they were negotiating deals with Netflix and the publishers. She was mistreating the staff and fighting with Will and Kate. Plus she was writing her memoir and documenting their lives, plus she was fighting with UN Women, ghosting celebrities, alienating aristos, and causing chaos during the tours. Plus the merching. Plus the drug use.
There were rumors about this all over social media. The reporters had to know about it. Heck, Rebecca English flat out saw Amy Pickering weeping in a car.
And none of it got out! Sam Cohen finessed all of it. We could see there was a problem. We could see Will scarfing Meghan. We could feel the tension during the foundation forum. We could see hatless Meghan flouting protocol. We could see the giggly demeanor and the unfocused pupils. We could see Harry’s friends weren’t invited to the reception. And yet it all got spun by Sam. Sam Cohen won the Olympics of Public Relations during Meghan’s tenure with the royals.
I focus on weird details so my favorite example of this was the Castle Mey visit after the wedding. It was clear to me that Charles called them to Castle Mey to tell they had to deal with her father who was giving post-wedding interviews complaining about how he was treated, but it was spun as Charles being super-supportive and wanting to give Meghan a nice break. It wasn’t until Tom Bowers’ book cam out that we found out that indeed they were scolded at Castle Mey
Ditto Sandringham. We could feel the relationship was breaking down. We could see Meghan leaking Amner Hall details to People. We could practically fell Will’s disdain, and yet Sam got the reporters to focus on the Fab Four nonsense. It wasn’t until the tiara story broke out that reporters confessed they knew there were tensions during Christmas and they just didn’t my tell us about them.
That’s an amazing PR job. Literally everyone in London knew there was a problem—aristos, charities, diplomats, brands, celebrities—and yet Sam managed to keep it out of the press. With her dad and sister out there giving interviews at the drop of a hat!

I was holding a baby recently and remembering the bit in Remnants where Nora notices Emily recoiling a bit from baby Javi, and wonders why Emily doesn't seem to like babies very much, and I realized they never really had that conversation, and I wrote a ficlet. might post it on ao3 later but here
also obligatory song link:
"Aren't you cold, baby?"
Emily turns her head to see her mother, bundled in a thick wool sweater, but hatless, her hair bright in the moonlight.
"No," she answers, smiling.
She's rarely cold, any more. Even in the dead of winter, the Commonwealth air doesn't chill her the way the dry, electrically clean air of the Institute did, and it doesn't choke her either, like the stale air of the various raiders' dens. The air out here is fresh and alive, it swirls around her, her own breath mingling with the breath of her brothers and sisters, and all of her mother's people, and the trees and grass of the land they live on, and the touch of it on her hands and face is like the touch of someone who loves her. She drinks it in, like the sight of the stars.
Her mother says, "Mind if I sit?"
Emily pats the woolen blanket beside herself, and her mother kneels down, a little creakily, and settles herself next to Emily, drawing her feet up under her.
"Can't sleep?" Emily asks.
"Mmm." Her mother holds out a hand, and Emily takes it, and her mother gives a little gasp, and says, "Oh, your hands are so warm."
Emily lifts her mother's chilly hand to her lips, presses it to her cheek, warming it against her own skin. They sit in comfortable silence for a bit, listening to the night's quiet, the singing of crickets, an occasional barred owl, with its distinctive call: Who cooks for you? is what her mother says they say, the owls.
"I was thinking," her mother says, finally. "About that poem you wrote, for the baby's birthday."
"Oh," says Emily, and feels a warmer flush come to her cheeks. "I-- you know. I know it's a strange present for a baby, but I wanted to give-- something. Something personal."
"It's so beautiful," says her mother, who, Emily suspects, is somewhat biased when it comes to the beauty of Emily's poetry. "And I-- you know, I thought-- I wasn't sure how you'd feel, about-- the baby. A baby. You-- I used to think you didn't like them. Babies."
"I didn't," says Emily.
Her mother nods, leaving space for Emily to say more, or not.
Emily looks at her mother's face, at its scars and creases, the imperfections of well-used human skin, of a woman who dives face first into everything. Into life, and all its damage and beauty. Her mother's face is one of the very few things Emily would rather look at than the clear night sky.
"I used to think--" she begins, and then hesitates. But experience has taught her that it's never a mistake to trust her mother with the truth.
She says, "I thought-- especially after Naveena was born-- I thought about how you'd had a baby, once. And I know you loved him so much."
"So much," says her mother softly.
Emily says, "And I used to think, I used to feel-- jealous, I guess. Because-- I never got to be-- that. Your baby."
"But you are my baby," says her mother, smiling, and Emily smiles back, and says, "But I never got to be so little. Even when you first found me, when I was so skinny, I was too big for you to pick me up."
"I gave you a bottle, though," says her mother, and Emily laughs a little, remembering the bottle's lip at her own parched lips, the unfamiliar liquid on her tongue, how she swallowed obediently, without knowing what she was drinking, her eyes on the scarred, shaved-headed, strangely gentle woman-- What's your name? No? I'm Nora-- and started to feel less sick.
She says, "You gave me everything."
"That's what mothers do," says her mother.
Emily says, "But I felt so guilty. And scared. Before I knew you were my mother."
"I wish you'd never had a minute without knowing you were mine," says her mother.
"But we all did," says Emily. "Even your--" She cuts herself off before saying real. She's real too. They all are. "Your baby. Shaun. Father."
Her mother's breath catches, and Emily squeezes her hand, says, "It wasn't your fault. You know that."
Then, after a little while, she says, "But I used to be-- yes, jealous. Of babies. Because I thought, they never had to wonder if they were loved, or if everything was going to be all right."
Her mother hums soft comprehension.
Emily says, "But now, now that there's a baby I love, I know that's not true. They wonder all the time. Like I said in the poem. Every moment is a question. And everything that happens, or doesn't happen, is an answer. They're piecing the world together, all the time. Just like me."
"And me," says her mother.
"And all of us." Emily kisses her mother's hand again. "And everything we can give them, it all means so much. As much as everything you've given me. I know now."
"I'm glad," says her mother.
The owl calls again, and Emily says, "You should go back inside. Get some sleep."
Her mother doesn't move, and Emily doesn't insist. If her mother were shivering, she would, but she's wrapped up warmly, and the night really isn't that cold. Emily tries to save her protectiveness for when it really matters. They all do, she thinks, for their human mother, and she does the same for them.
"Baby," her mother says, eventually. "Emily, you know-- I couldn't ever have had another baby. If Hancock hadn't been a ghoul, I would have-- I don't know. Done something, to keep myself from-- I couldn't have done it again. Gone through it again. Broken myself-- open-- like that."
She swallows. Emily listens.
"Father gave me Shaun," her mother says, "and I tried-- I was trying-- to be a good mom. Because he thought-- he knew-- I was his mom. So I had to be. The best I could. But it was like, it still felt a little-- sick. The way he was just-- a copy. Of my human son. It wasn't his fault, I knew that, how Father used him to-- trick me, and fuck with my head. And I was trying-- but--"
Emily listens. She remembers, how the little boy flung his arms around the woman's waist, how the woman said, Hey, Shaun. How she sounded tired. From the walk, Y4-15 thought, from the fight. Y4-15 could smell the sweat on her, and the faint coppery tang of dried blood.
Her mother says, "If it hadn't been for you-- Emily--"
Emily isn't afraid of her mother's tears. They fell on her the night she was named, like rain, and rain is another thing she'll never get used to, the miracle of it, falling through the same sky that opens to show her the stars, watering the crops, washing the sweat and dust and blood from her skin. There's so much sky, and all of it a gift.

Love will tie the Tourniquet
After some very valid criticism of the Sanctuary scene and the very limited canon Thomastair content I figured I’d write a scene where they talk it out and Thomas apologizes. I wrote this rather quickly and didn’t edit much so sorry for any mistakes.
Title is from “Tourniquet” by Breaking Benjamin which is definitely an Alastair song (although I find the lyrics difficult to interpret). I think it’s from the POV of someone who is struggling with something and realize love won’t fix them, but also believe nothing will. Love will tie the tourniquet and suffocate me.
CW for period typical racism and homophobia, implied PTSD, mentions of bullying
Alastair was surprised to hear someone knock on the door. His mother was still on bedrest and wouldn’t be receiving any visitors and certainly no one would want to see him. He opened the door to see Thomas Lightwood in the door, hatless as always, snow had fallen in his hair. Even covered in snow Thomas was a beautiful sight to behold. Alastair tried to stop staring, but wasn’t quite sure how. Why was he here, after everything? Alastair had taken his time to think through what happened, but had arrived at the same conclusion, it was impossible. In retrospect, he wasn’t even sure Thomas liked him that much. Like Charles, he probably just saw someone who could fulfill his needs. After all, Thomas had seemed quite disappointed when Alastair had refused to take things any further than kissing in the Sanctuary.
‘Good afternoon,’ Thomas said awkwardly after a silence. ‘Can I come in? I… I thought we should talk.’
A bit hesitant, Alastair let him in and took his coat. He asked Risa to make them some tea, and brought Thomas into the parlor.
‘What did you want to talk about?’ Alastair asked.
‘I wanted to apologize,’ Thomas said.
Alastair frowned. ‘Why? You have nothing to apologize for.’
‘I do,’ Thomas said. ‘I was angry with you because of that rumor, but that gave me no right to publicly humiliate you. I treated you terribly, and you didn’t deserve that.’
Alastair wasn’t sure what to make of this. It had hurt, badly, the way Thomas had spoken to him, but he’d told himself over and over again that this what he deserved.
‘Didn’t I?’ Alastair asked. ‘I was awful at school, perhaps less so to you, but still. I can’t imagine why you’d even want to be around me.’
‘Because I forgive you,’ Thomas said.
Alastair stared at him, eyes wide. He tried to hold back the tears, but wasn’t sure he could.
‘Why? Why would you forgive me? I thought you hated me.’
Thomas looked confused. ‘After the Sanctuary? After we kissed?’
Alastair sighed. ‘Charles kissed me many times, we did more than that, and he didn’t love me. He just thought I was convenient and I could fulfill his needs.’
It had been mostly about sex with Charles, and it had taken him so long to realize that it didn’t have to be like that. He’d given Charles everything he could, hoping that perhaps someday he’d receive love and affection back.
Thomas’ mouth fell open. ‘You… you thought I would be like that? That I only wanted you for physical intimacy? Why would you think that?’
‘What else was I supposed to think?’ Alastair snapped, trying but failing to hold back the tears. ‘You wanted to kiss me only moments after you said I deserved to be hated. And because I wanted you, because I love you, I gave in. You wanted to keep me a secret, you were ashamed of liking me, so ashamed you couldn’t tell anyone, not even people who would not mind that you liked men. Just like Charles.’
I couldn’t have told them how I felt about you. Thomas’ words echoed in his head, and it was worse than Charles being ashamed of liking men. At least he understood Charles’ fears, even when it did not justify how badly Charles had treated him.
‘I never meant… I never wanted to hurt you. I’m sorry, and I said some stupid things. But I don’t want to keep you secret. There were so many things I should have said to you then, and I’m sorry I messed it up so badly. You do not deserve to be hated and I should never have said otherwise.’
Alastair wasn’t sure how much more he could take. He was desperate for affection, always had been, that was why he’d given so much to Charles, but how could he be sure Thomas wasn’t going to be the same?
‘Why not? Did I not cause you and your family terrible pain?’
Alastair was crying now and to his surprise Thomas came to sat down next to him, awkwardly putting his hands around him. Alastair pushed him away.
‘Please… please don’t.’
Thomas backed away as if he’d been burnt.
‘Physical affection isn’t easy,’ Alastair tried to explain.
He wasn’t used to hugging or even being touched at all in a non sexual way. Cordelia tried often to show her affection physically and he was grateful, but it just didn’t always work for him. Sometimes a touch could burn, be so overwhelming he only got worse.
‘What do you need?’ Thomas asked. ‘How can I help?’
‘Just keep talking,’ Alastair said. ‘Please. Tell me how you really feel. Be honest with me. If you… If you don’t really love me, it’s alright. I just need to know. Because I don’t understand anymore. Do I deserve to be hated? To be loved? I don’t get it.’
Thomas hesitated. ‘I was wrong. I was grieving and I was pushing these feelings away and I took it all out on you. But that was no excuse. You do not deserve to be hated, not when you regret what you did so much, and you do not deserve to be treated the way we… the way I treated you. And I’m so sorry. I think I do love you, I just never knew what to do with those feelings so I hid them. But I’m not going to hide anymore. I’m not ashamed of loving you.’
Alastair wiped the tears from his eyes. ‘Are you serious?’
‘I told Christopher, and he took it well. Or, well, he said he already knew and was under the assumption everyone already knew and we just didn’t talk about it. And I told my parents and Eugenia.’
Alastair hesitated. ‘Did you tell them I like men?’
‘No,’ Thomas said quickly. ‘Just about me, and how I feel. And that I’d at least like to have you as a friend, even if you weren’t interested in more.’
‘And your family, they accepted you?’
‘They were very kind and supportive, although my mother did say I might be worse at this whole romance thing than my father.’
Alastair frowned. ‘What did your father do?’
Thomas laughed, and Alastair could only think how beautiful his laugh was, how it lit up his face. ‘As you know, my mother was a servant before she became a shadowhunter, and my father decided to regularly ask her for scones, which he doesn’t like, so he could see her when she brought them. He then hid them under his bed.’
Alastair burst out laughing. He knew he shouldn’t, he knew he had no right to laugh about the people he’d brought such shame to, but at the same time he couldn’t imagine this happening. If Gideon Lightwood disliked scones so much, why not ask for literally anything else?
‘He also accidently blurted out his intentions of marrying my mother in her presence before he even proposed,’ Thomas added. ‘I’m not sure which part is worse, but it does make for good stories.’
‘I’d say the scones are worse,’ said Alastair, taking a sip from his tea.
‘You’re very beautiful,’ Thomas said suddenly. ‘When you laugh. Also when you don’t laugh, but I like seeing you laugh. You always seem so sad.’
Alastair looked Thomas in the eye. ‘Really? You think I’m beautiful?’
‘Of course I do, who wouldn’t? I love your hair now that you’ve dyed it back to black.’
Alastair felt the tears coming back, and Thomas looked startled. ‘Did I say something wrong?’
‘No, it’s just… No one has told me I’m beautiful. And no one has told me they like my hair. It wasn’t an easy decision to dye it back. I didn’t want to pretend to be something I’m not anymore, but I thought everyone preferred the blonde.’
‘I’ve always liked dark hair, and it suits you well. And I’m glad you’re more comfortable with it. I guess I have no idea what it’s like, to be judged for the color of your hair or your skin.’
‘That’s the second part of what happened at the academy, what I hadn’t told you yet,’ Alastair said sadly. ‘No one there looked like me. They latched onto the rumors about my father, of course but they also treated me differently for being Persian, made fun of my features, my language… I thought it would get better if I adapted more to what they wanted.’
‘Alastair, I’m so sorry,’ Thomas said, reaching out his hand as if to touch him, but retreating. He probably remembered Alastair’s warning, but right now he did want to be touched. Now he knew Thomas did care for him, even if he had an odd way of showing it sometimes.
So Alastair leaned into him, resting his head against Thomas’ chest. It was comforting to feel his chest rise and fall with his breath. Perhaps he did like to be touched sometimes, but only if the other person loved him. There were very few people who did, and Alastair wasn’t so certain if Cordelia loved him anymore.
‘Is this alright?’ Thomas asked, putting a hand around him.
‘It is. It’s actually nice. But Tom, how can we make this work, if your friends still hate me?’
‘Christopher doesn’t,’ Thomas said. ‘He is willing to give you a chance. All you have to do is help him out with his experiments, show some interest, and he’ll like you. Lucie is going to adore you, I’m sure of it. As for James and Matthew… I’m not sure, but they don’t get to decide who I like or don’t like. For so long I tried to hate you out of loyalty to Matthew, but ultimately that’s his issue and not mine.’
‘But what if you lose your friends because of me?’ Alastair asked. ‘I would never want you to lose people you love for me.’
Thomas put his hand in Alastair’s hair, and Alastair thought about how Thomas had said he loved his hair. He’d never considered someone might. Charles had certainly preferred his hair blonde. He had been the one to suggest dyeing it.
‘That would be their loss,’ Thomas said. ‘You deserve to be loved too, Alastair. I will tell James and Matthew when they get back, and if they decide not to accept it, then perhaps they’re not very good friends.’
Alastair was surprised to hear him say that. He’d thought the four boys were exceptionally close, the kind of friendship he longed for but never had.
‘That’s what my mother said,’ Thomas added.
Alastair frowned. ‘Do your parents know I spread that rumor? Surely they would not accept you pursuing me if they knew?’
‘I told them,’ Thomas said. ‘But my father said that when he was young, he’d done worse. He realized he was wrong and changed, uncle Gabriel too. He said it would be hypocritical to hold this against you.’
‘Really?’
‘So far they seem to like you,’ Thomas said. ‘And they are very grateful that you made sure to keep me safe. And… I am too. I never thanked you, but I should have. I am grateful that you put so much effort into protecting me. But please do not risk your life like that again. I would never forgive myself if you died trying to keep me safe.’
‘Only if you promise never to do something as reckless as those patrols again,’ Alastair said. ‘Someone had to keep you safe, and I certainly wasn’t going to let you die because of your own recklessness. Because I love you.’
They sat like that for a while, Alastair taking in the sensation of being held. He didn’t remember ever receiving such affection, and wasn’t quite sure what to make of it.
‘I’m not going to patrol alone again,’ Thomas said. ‘I promise.’
‘Then I won’t follow you as you patrol alone either,’ Alastair said. He paused. ‘I never expected you to come back for me. I never thought you could love me.’
‘I do. I loved you since Paris,’ Thomas said. ‘I mean, at school I liked you as well, but I thought you it was daring that you said whatever you wanted. I saw your sadness too, but not the real you. Not like in Paris.’
‘I certainly did not say whatever I wanted,’ Alastair said softly. ‘I said what I thought I had to so they wouldn’t hurt me.’
‘I can’t even imagine how badly they must have hurt you,’ Thomas said softly.
Soothing words eased some of the pain, but not all of it. Alastair wasn’t sure if it ever would. Love would tie the tourniquet. It might suffocate him. He would have to find another way to starve the pain within, if such a thing were possible.
‘You were treated badly as well, I’m sure you have some idea.’
‘Yes, but you were always nicer to me than to the others, and I think that shielded me from the others as well. Are you going to be alright, Alastair? I want to help you, but I’m not sure I know how.’
‘I have no idea,’ Alastair admitted. ‘But I’m going to try. You make me want to try. I have no idea how though.’
He knew he needed to get better, if he wanted this to work, to find a way to heal from everything that had happened to him. He knew he couldn’t depend on one person to heal him like he had with Charles, someone who had ultimately broken whatever was left of his heart.
‘Perhaps you could talk to uncle Jem,’ Thomas suggested. ‘If anyone can help with that, it’s him.’
Alastair hadn’t considered that. His cousin thought he hated him. He’d reached out once, back when Alastair had attended the Academy, and he’d pushed him away like he did everyone else. He wasn’t sure Jem would still be willing to help him after everything. But perhaps he could try. Perhaps it didn’t always have to be like this.

Can we see req Wally? Please
Here he is! It took me a while to finish this reference, but here you go, anon! One large and good boy.
Fun facts about Req!AU Wally:
He’s larger than Tom - both in height and just generally. He’s got muscles and tum and he’s on the wider side. I haven’t picked out an exact height just yet but he’s at least 6 foot tall.
Was homeless for a while. Tom took him in and let him sleep on his couch while he got his life more stable - though Wally eventually just ended up staying there full time even after getting hired at JDS.
He’s basically a big puppy. He’s very optimistic and super expressive. No poker face on this boy. He can’t really hold a grudge, either - he gets grouchy about things but give him an hour and he’s over it.
Will fight to defend the people he cares about. He won’t win - he’s not actually good at fighting at all. But he’ll try. He’s a little too self sacrificing at times - not that he has self worth issues or anything. (He totally does.)
This is actually why his nose is sorta broken, too - he stepped in to defend Tom from some jerk racist at one point and it didn’t end too well. Tom... appreciated it, but can’t help but worry about this kid who’s just trying to do the right thing.
Overall pretty physical in general. Likes physical contact - is the sort who will hug people or pat their shoulder, that kinda thing. He’d also not be opposed to flopping into someone’s lap were it not for his size.
He was one of the later members of the JDS crew to get turned to ink - along with Tom and Allison. While they got the toon treatment, it didn’t stick for Wally, and he ended up as a Lost One.
Hatless version of art under cut, also!

Justified Timeline
I posted this on tumblr a few years ago, but it was as a link to my Dreamwidth journal, which I’ve since gotten rid of. Don’t know how active the fandom is nowadays, but I was talking to some people about how I live for making fandom timelines and I thought might as well make this one accessible again. It goes all the way through the last season and marks characters’ deaths, so here be spoilers:

Death of Bo Crowder
SEASON ONE occurs over 89 concrete days total; HOWEVER, the pacing of the episodes is much looser than in later seasons, and is entirely possible that the season took up to 4 months in the narrative
SEASON TWO
2.1, “The Moonshine War”
(begins the same day as 1.13)
After the initial scenes, Raylan spends at least a week under investigation
Episode occurs over 8 days

Winona tells Raylan that she’s pregnant
Episode occurs over 1 day
SEASON TWO occurs over 45 days; however, there are several episodes that seem to imply that a week or more has passed, without giving any concrete evidence, so it’s possible that the season occurs over 2 and a half months
SEASON THREE
3.1, “The Gunfighter”
(starts same day as 2.13)
Evening of day 1
(three full weeks pass)
Episode occurs over 3 days following

Winona is 7 weeks pregnant
Episode occurs over 1 day
Winona leaves Raylan
3.6, “When The Guns Come Out”
(starts the following day)
Episode occurs over 2 days
Note: 95% of the action takes place on one day. The second to last scene takes place at night, on a different day (Raylan is wearing a different shirt). I assumed it was the very next night, but Art says that Charlie “went home on Tuesday,” and Raylan replies “I saw him Tuesday,” which could imply that several days have passed.
3.7, “The Man Behind the Curtain”
(at least one day passes)
Episode occurs over 2 days
Opens late in the evening, lasts until the following night
3.8, “Watching the Detectives”
(starts late the same night as 3.7)
Episode occurs over 2 days
Opens late at night, lasts until the following night
Death of Gary Hawkins
3.9, “Loose Ends”
(first short scene begins late the same night as 3.8)
Episode occurs over 4 days
3.10, “Guy Walks Into a Bar”
(at least one day passes)
Episode occurs over 3 days
Limehouse states that it is late autumn
3.11, “Measures”
(at least one day passes)
Episode occurs over 1 day
3.12, “Coalition”
(starts the same day as 3.11)
Episode (theoretically) occurs over 1 day
The timing of this day is absolutely an error. Judging by the filming--every scene in sunlight, every character wearing the same clothes, and some dialogue cues--it only occurs over one day. However, there is no physical way for everything to happen within a single day, and in “Measures,” Raylan and Art clearly return to the office at the end of a shift, although the next episode continues virtually uninterrupted.
Raylan also states that Dickie Bennett was released from prison “a week ago Wednesday,” while the pace and filming of the narrative implies he was only released the day before if not that very morning.
Death of Tom Bergen
3.13, “Slaughterhouse”
(starts late the same night as 3.12)
Episode occurs over 3 days
note: based on context clues, Winona is about 11 weeks pregnant
SEASON THREE occurs over 52-60 days
SEASON FOUR
4.1, “Hole in the Wall”
(begins 5-8 weeks after 3.13)
Episode occurs over 2 days
4.2, “Where’s Waldo”
(starts the next day)
Episode occurs over 1 day
Art turned 56 the week prior
Art has been in Lexington for 22 years
Rachel has left her husband; presuming she was not married in 2.4, when her nephew joked about finding her a husband, this means her marriage lasted for a maximum of three months. It is also possible that her nephew’s line was a one-off joke and that the writers only later decided that they wanted Rachel to be married.
4.3, “Truth and Consequences”
(starts the same evening as 4.2)
Episode occurs over 2 days
4.4, “This Bird Has Flown”
(starts the same evening as 4.3)
Episode occurs over 2 days
Death of Bill St. Cyr
4.5, “Kin”
(first short scene is the same night as 4.5; second scene begins the following day)
Episode occurs over 2 days
4.6, “Foot Chase”
(first short scene is the same night as 4.5; second scene begins the following day)
Episode occurs over 2 days
4.7, “Money Trap”
First scene is a flashback to 6 days prior, when Raylan handed over Jody
Narrative picks up again the day after 4.6

(starts the same morning as 4.7 ends)
Episode occurs over 2 days
Death of Arlo Givens
4.9, “The Hatchet Tour”
(starts 2 days later)
Episode occurs over 1 day
4.10, “Get Drew”
(starts the same night as 4.9)
Episode occurs over 2 days
4.11, “Decoy”
(starts the same day as 4.10)
Episode occurs over 1 day
4.12, “Peace of Mind”
(at least one day passes)
Winona knows she’s carrying a girl; would imply she’s 18-20 weeks pregnant
Episode occurs over 1 day, except for final scene (which occurs the day after)
Death of Colton Rhodes
4.13, “Ghosts”
(starts the day of the previous scene)
Episode occurs over 2 days
SEASON FOUR occurs over 14 days total
SEASON FIVE
5.1, “A Murder of Crowes”
(starts minimum 6 months after 4.13)
Episode occurs over 4 days
Death of Sammy Tonin
Note: Willa has been born
5.2, “The Kids Aren’t All Right”
(starts the day following 5.1)
Episode occurs over 2 days
5.3, “Good Intentions”
(starts the same day as 5.2)
Episode occurs over 3 days
5.4, “Over the Mountain”
(starts just before dawn the day following 5.3)
Episode occurs over 2 days
5.5, “Shot All to Hell”
(starts at least one day following 5.4)
Episode occurs over 2 days
Deaths of Nick Mooney and Jean Baptiste
David Vasquez states that Art is about 8 months from retirement
5.6, “Kill the Messenger”
(starts at least one day following 5.5)
Episode occurs over 2 days
5.7, “Raw Deal”
(starts at least one day following 4.6)
Episode occurs over 2 days
(discrepancy: Boyd + co. arrive in Mexico, which is at least a 2 day trip by car, while the rest of the characters are still experiencing 1 day)
Death of Johnny Crowder
5.8, “Whistle Past the Graveyard”
(starts the morning following 5.7)
Episode occurs over 1 day
5.9, “Wrong Roads”
(starts the day following 5.8)
Episode occurs over 3 days
There’s a bit of blurriness; Boyd, Darryl, and Jimmy arrive in Harlan long before the second group, and it’s not clear if their trip was meant to take one day or two. If it’s meant to be the same day, though, that means Raylan received a physical copy of a Mexican murder investigation within 24 hours of the murder being discovered, which seems unlikely. I’ve recorded it as two days.
Death of Hot Rod Dunham
5.10, “Weight”
(first short scene begins the same night as 5.9; second scene begins the following day)
Episode occurs over 1 day
Death of Danny Crowe
5.11, “The Toll”
(starts the day after 5.10)
Episode occurs over 2 days
5.12, “Starvation”
(starts the day after 5.11)
Episode occurs over 3 days
Rachel says that the case against Grady Hale was one of the first one she worked, as a 21-year-old deputy. That would make her 35 in season 5 (younger than the original pilot script), and would indicate she’s been in the Lexington office for fourteen years, although it’s possible she transferred out and back in the interim.
5.13, “Restitution”
(starts the same night as 5.12)
Main plot occurs over 2 days
Once the Crowe situation is resolved, there’s at least three days of additional scenes--Raylan seeing Art, Ava being released from prison, etc. However, it’s possible that these scenes take place over a longer amount of time. I’ve recorded it as a possible week in the final count.
SEASON FIVE occurs over 32-39 days total
SEASON 6
6.1, “Fate’s Right Hand”
Raylan states it has been 4 weeks since the Mexican police seized Boyd’s truck; if his timeline matches up with mine, this would mean two weeks has passed since the season 5 finale
Episode occurs over 4 days
Arlo’s grave lists 2013 as his year of death
6.2, “Cash Game”
(starts the following day)
Episode occurs over 1 day
Raylan says Willa is 9 months old; this means that either there is a 13-month gap between seasons 4 and 5 (unlikely, based on the general plot and Ava’s imprisonment storyline in particular) or there is a continuity error.
6.3, “Noblesse Oblige”
(starts the following day)
Episode occurs over 1 day
6.4, “The Trash and the Snake”
(starts the following day)
Episode occurs over 1 day
6.5, “Sounding”
(starts late the same night as 6.4)
Episode occurs over 2 days
Some detectives mention that it is the start of bear season, which would make it somewhere between October-December.
6.6, “Alive Day”
(starts late the same night as 6.5)
Episode occurs over 2 days
Zachariah references Boyd’s season-two time in the mine as being “a couple years back”
Death of Choo Choo
6.7, “The Hunt”
(starts late the same night as 6.6)
Episode occurs over 2 days
Winona says that she took an Uber from the airport; Uber has been located in Kentucky since the spring of 2014.
Boyd says that he has been saving a bottle of bourbon from 1995 for “damn near 20 years.” I’d say this confirms that the show is supposed to be nearabouts 2015, although it can’t be narrowed down much further. He also says it’s the first day of wild hog hunting season, which doesn’t officially exist in Kentucky.
6.8, “Dark as a Dungeon”
(at least one day passes)
Episode occurs over 3 days
Raylan says that Arlo died “last year,” which would conclusively date this season as taking place in 2014.
Death of Ty Walker
6.9, “Burned”
(starts the same day as 6.8)
Episode occurs over 2 days
6.10, “Trust”
(starts the same night as 6.9)
Episode occurs over 2 days
6.11, “Fugitive Number One”
(starts the day after 6.10)
Episode occurs over 1 day
Deaths of Carl Lennon, Mike Cosmatopolis, and Katherine Hale
6.12, “Collateral”
(first scene occurs the same night; the episode then begins the day following 6.11)
Episode occurs over 2 days
Raylan’s cousin Mary from the hills has died at some point since season 4
Death of Zachariah Randolph
6.13, “The Promise”
(starts the same evening as 6.12 ends)
Main plot occurs over 2 days; it’s unclear how much time passes between Raylan shooting Boon and leaving Kentucky, but it was probably at least two additional days
Death of Avery Markham
EPILOGUE: Takes place 4 years later. Rachel sends Raylan mail from the Seattle Marshal’s Office. Ava is living in Lebec, CA with her son, who is probably about three and a half.
SEASON SIX (excluding the epilogue) takes place over 21 days
Based on this timeline, I can say, pretty conclusively, that Justified takes place from March 2010 to the late fall or winter of 2014. This fits with almost all of the time-specific references made in the final season, as well as my season-by-season timeline notes. In a few places there is a slight discrepancy, in which a single episode’s plotting implies that things take place over a shorter amount of time than suggested by the overarching seasonal timeline, but it’s rarely more than a few days at a time, and I’m confident this timeline is accurate within a few months.
There are only two significant errors in continuity. The first is Willa’s age. As noted, if Willa is nine months old in season 6, then that leaves at least 7 months unaccounted for, either in between seasons 4 and 5, or over season 5. Between seasons 4 and 5, Ava is in prison and hasn’t even been assigned a judge for her court date; 13 months is much too long for that to be true, at least without it being worthy of mentioning. And while it’s possible that season 5 takes place over a slightly longer period than I have listed, it’s very tightly plotted, and again, I doubt I would overlook 7 months’ worth of progression.
The other error is a very similar problem--Loretta’s age. She is explicitly stated to be 14 years old in her first appearance. In season 5, when her plot involves her having a boyfriend, she can reasonably be assumed (both due to the timeline and the context) to be 15 or recently-turned 16. In Season 6, which only took place about two months later, she is living on her own, in Harlan, and is presumed to be 18--unless she’s supposed to be an emancipated minor, which would be characteristic, but which is not actually mentioned or implied in-text. Kaitlyn Dever, who played Loretta, was in fact 14 years old when she started filming and 18 when she finished filming, but the series covers a shorter amount of time than real life does, and Loretta should only be, at most, 17 in the finale, if not still 16. This is clearly a narrative choice, however. Willa’s age has relatively little impact on the plot, and is most likely a small slip up. Loretta obviously can’t be living in Harlan and poised to run a weed empire if she’s still a teenage foster child, so I believe the writers deliberately waved away the issue in order to fit Loretta into the final season. Which I think we can all forgive, because she’s a fucking badass.

Merry Christmas, @larvesta! I’m your @mlsecretsanta so I did a little art and wrote a prequel one-shot to It Was a Wednesday just for you. <3
It Was a Tuesday
“These are so great, Mari,” Adrien beamed, rubbing the green scarf against his cheek. “I think I like this one even better than last year’s.”
“The yarn is softer, better for scarves,” Marinette smiled.
“You spoil us.” Alya ran her fingers through the purple fringe of her scarf. “This better count as our Christmas presents.”
“Don’t be silly. These are ‘just because’ scarves.”
“The last time we got ‘just because’ gifts is when you needed us to pull an all-nighter with you to finish your portfolio,” Nino accused with a grin. “I’m not sure I trust ‘just because’ gifts.”
“I’m moving to the United States,” Marinette announced, voice wavering even as she straightened her spine and squared her shoulders.
“Excuse me?” Alya asked, sitting up from where she had been lounging against Adrien. “You most certainly are not.”
Nino felt his stomach drop as Marinette’s gaze flitted to him. “Well, I was offered a really great job,” she said. “They’re going to let me start as a junior designer. It would take me years to work my way up to that somewhere here.”
“But you can’t just leave,” Adrien frowned. “It’s Christmas time; we love Christmas time!”
“And you know, there’s the whole missing you way too much thing,” Nino added.
Marinette worried her bottom lip. “I wouldn’t be moving until the beginning of the year and this is a really amazing opportunity.”
“It is,” Adrien admitted begrudgingly. “Even at Gabriel, you would’ve only started as an unpaid intern.”
“Adrien, are you really telling me you can’t get her something?” Alya pouted. “M, you can’t leave us. That’s all there is to it.”
Adrien frowned at his scarf. “If we give these back, will you have to stay?”
Marinette winced and looked at Nino. “What do you think?”
“I’m not sure,” he answered slowly. “Where are you going to live?”
“I’m looking at apartments now. There’s one only a couple of blocks away from where I’ll be working and since I’m coming from overseas, they would let me do everything over the phone and have it ready when it get there. It’s even mostly furnished. My parents are going to help with the first couple of months on rent until I get my finances figured out.”
Nino nodded. “You aren’t going to know anyone there, are you?”
“Well, no, but I can make friends. It’s a younger company and small so there will probably be people my age.”
“I don’t like it,” Alya sighed, “but obviously they have good taste. You’re too good to be wasted on an unpaid internship.” She nudged Adrien’s side and he huffed.
“It’s not like I have any say in it! You know I would hire Mari if I could.”
“And I’ll move back eventually, of course,” Marinette added. “I just need to get some experience under my belt so I can come back and apply to some of the fashion houses here.”
“At least we get to keep you for Christmas. We still have to go ice skating and get that magic hot cocoa from Juleka’s family’s place and Nath is doing the art piece in the park and…”
Alya’s voice faded away as the gears began to turn in Nino’s mind. He didn’t want to assume Marinette wanted him to move with her, but maybe it wouldn’t be the worst thing to offer at least. It wasn’t like he had anything keeping him in Paris. His family was here but he could always visit. And sure, he had found a good in with some of the local clubs, but he was sure he could do the same in the States. But if he was being honest with himself, the biggest motivator was that the thought of Marinette being across the world made his heart ache. ___________________________
Nino wrapped his scarf around Marinette. “How would you feel about company?”
She blinked up at him in surprise. “Company?”
“When you move,” Nino grinned nervously. “How would you feel about me coming too?”
Her face lit up. “Really? You would move with me?!”
He shrugged. “Come on, Maribug, what’s the point of Paris if you aren’t here?”
She linked her arm with his, leaning against him with a wide smile. “You’re the absolute best friend a girl could ask for, Ninny.”
“I should’ve never let you start calling me that,” he sighed.
“Wait. I mean, you can’t just move,” she frowned.
“Why not? That’s what you’re doing.”
“Yeah, but I have a job offer.” Marinette picked up her mug of cocoa and blew over the rim. “You’ll need to apply for a work visa or something.”
“I’m sure we can figure it out. Marian mentioned something about a chain of clubs in the U.S. Maybe he can help.”
“It would be pretty amazing to have you with me.”
“You two look all kinds of chummy,” Alya drawled, appearing beside the table. Adrien pulled out her chair and she kissed his cheek before sitting down. “What’s going on?”
Marinette beamed at Nino. “Nino might move with me!”
“Nope.” Adrien shook his head.
“I don’t think I want to know who you’re more upset about leaving,” Marinette teased.
“We can’t lose both of you,” he whined.
“How horrible for you to only be left with your beautiful and wonderful girlfriend,” Alya said dryly. Adrien stuck out his bottom lip in a pout and Alya nipped at it, making him chuckle. “Personally I like it. Goodness knows Mari will need someone looking out for her. I think we can trust Nino to do that.” Alya gave him a knowing look and Nino shrank back in his chair.
“I would be just fine on my own, thanks,” Marinette sniffed but squeezed Nino’s arm. “But I’m super excited you’re coming with me. Oh! We need to look for you an apartment. Obviously you can stay with me at first if you need to. Are your parents going to be okay with this? I mean, I know we’re grown-ups and everything now, but still… Eek, so much to do!”
Nino smiled and took a sip of his hot cocoa and knew that the warmth filling his chest had nothing to do with the sweet beverage. ___________________________
“You can’t leave us, Turtle. What will I do without my loving eldest son?” Samira Lahiffe pulled Nino to her with a dramatic sigh. “I’ll be lost.”
He laughed and hugged her tight. “Something tells me you’ll be just fine, Mama.”
“Now have you told this girl you love her yet? This is a big step for you two,” Nadim moved past his wife to steal a roll from the cooling tray. Samira smacked his arm and he grinned with a mouth full of warm bread.
“I’ve told you it’s not like that. She’s my best friend.”
“Who you lovvvvve,” Chris sang from the table. He made a kissy face and Nino rolled his eyes.
“Leave him alone, Panda. He doesn’t mock you about Jessica,” Samira reprimanded, pointing a finger. The young man grumbled and returned his attention to his tablet, cheeks darkening. She turned back to Nino. “Why do you want to do this?”
“I don’t like the thought of her moving so far away by herself,” he admitted. “Besides, I think it would be cool to live somewhere else for a while.”
“You could live with my family in Morocco.”
“Not if he wants to have fun,” Nadim muttered, dodging a glare from his wife and ducking out of the kitchen.
Samira put a hand to her son’s cheek, expression soft. “I just want you to be careful. You only get one of these.” She pressed her other hand to his chest. “You have to protect it.”
“I will,” he promised, leaning down to kiss her cheek. “Now I need to go. Mari’s family is waiting on me.”
“Leaving me already,” she sighed. “You were just a baby yesterday.” She shook her head and pulled a container down. “Here, take some of these rolls to Tom and Sabine.”
“Mama, they’re bakers,” Nino protested. “They don’t need any rolls. Believe me, they can make their own rolls.”
“Always new tricks to learn,” Samira winked, handing him the container. ___________________________
“Merry Christmas!” Marinette exclaimed, throwing herself into Nino’s arms. He picked her up and spun her around as she giggled. “Come on, we have to go do gifts right now!”
“I just got here, Rudolf,” he laughed, tapping one of the antlers sprouting from her green headband.
“You’re late!”
“By three minutes.”
“Still late, Ninny.”
He followed her up the stairs to her family’s apartment. Tom and Sabine greeted him as soon as the door opened and Marinette made quick work of divesting him of his coat and scarf. He put a hand over his knit hat. “No.”
“You can’t keep your hat on for pictures!”
“I do every other year.”
Marinette gave him a serious look, hands gripping his arm gently. “It’s time to let go, Nino.”
He chuckled and shook his head. “Not a chance.”
“Fine,” she huffed, “I’ll just get Papa to swipe it when you’re unaware.”
“Well, now you’ve given away your plan.”
She narrowed her eyes. “We’ll strike when you least expect it. I will get a hatless Nino Christmas picture this year.”
“It’s important to have dreams,” he nodded, “unattainable as they might be.”
“Butthead.”
“Hey! At least I wore a festive one.” He pointed to his head. “It’s green and looks like Santa’s. I’m totally rocking the Christmas look.”
“Now you just need a sprig of mistletoe behind your ear,” she winked. “Then all the girls would come running.”
Nino couldn’t stop his gaze from wandering to her lips, pink and glossy and inviting. “Is that so?” he asked, voice low.
Marinette inhaled sharply and stepped back. “Of course. You’re a catch, Ninny.” ___________________________
“A perfect fit,” Marinette smiled, tugging on the sweater sleeve. “Do you like it?”
Nino pulled her to his chest in a hug. “I love it, Mari. It’s the best sweater in all the world. By far, my favorite Christmas present this year.”
“I thought it was appropriate since people can’t see your tattoo in the winter. This way you can still show it off,” she teased. “As if the earrings and hair weren’t enough to show what a hip DJ you are.” She reached up and tugged on one of his dark green curls that had escaped from beneath his hat.
He chuckled as she stepped back and admired her work. Marinette had knitted the tattoo she had originally designed for him into the soft sweater. Lines of blue and purple and green crossed behind a music note just as they did on his right arm. “You’re too good to me.”
“I think you’ve got that the other way around. I can’t believe you’re really coming with me.” She sat down on her chaise. “I’m actually relieved. I was a little worried about going alone.”
“You put on a good front,” he nodded, “but I maybe had a feeling.”
“Are you sure you want to come though? It’s kind of a big deal.”
He sat down on the floor in front of her, giving her his back, and Marinette cackled in triumph as she plucked the knit cap off of his head. He sighed, dropping his head back against her legs as she ran her fingers into his hair. “Of course, I want to go.”
“Why?” Marinette went to work separating out the green and blue and brown curls, smoothing them away from each other. It always relaxed her to play with Nino’s hair since he had let it grow out, finally giving into the soft curls that covered his head.
He tilted his head back so he could look up at her. The lamplight cast soft shadows on her face, making her eyes look large and luminous. “Because you need me to.”
Marinette frowned, fingers stilling. “I don’t—“
“I’m not saying you couldn’t make it on your own,” he interjected, holding up a hand. “I’m saying you don’t have to. Besides, I think it will be nice to get away for a bit and see a different part of the world.”
“We’re going to need to brush up on our English,” she warned.
Nino grinned. “Are you asking me on a study date?”
“You bring the English and I’ll bring the food.”
“Sounds like a rocking good time. It’ll be like we’re in lycee again,” he laughed. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box, turning around to offer it to her. “Here. I wanted to get you something else, but I haven’t found the right thing yet. This is a starter Christmas present.”
Marinette took the box with a smile. “You better not get me anything else, Mr. Lahiffe. You need to save your money for our big adventure.” She opened the box and found a metallic ladybug charm on a thin silver chain. Black jewels glittered in the shell.
“The lady at the jewelry store said ladybugs are a symbol of good luck,” Nino explained quickly, feeling his skin grow warm. “I thought it might be nice for you to have a lucky charm with the move and new job and everything.”
“It’s so pretty.”
“I know you like shiny stuff so, um, I thought you might like it.”
Marinette pushed on his back so she could swing her leg over the chaise and stand. He followed her and she held out the necklace. “Put it on me?” She swept up her long hair and twisted it into a bun, holding it in place at the back of her head as her antlers bounced with the movement.
Nino took the necklace with a deep breath and stood behind her. He wasn’t sure what it was about seeing the back of her neck that made him want to lean down and kiss the smooth skin, but he quickly stamped down the feeling. “I don’t think it’s going to fit over your sweater collar,” he warned, proud of how steady his voice sounded.
Marinette frowned down at her pink Christmas sweater. “Well, that’s okay. I’ll just wear it inside my sweater for tonight. It’ll be close to my heart,” she sighed. “Oh geez, was that as corny as it sounded?”
“It was pretty corny,” Nino agreed, bringing the ends of the necklace together and hooking the clasp. He put a hand on top of the one that held up her hair and she released it, letting it fall in a heavy sheet down her back. A sweet mint smell filled Nino’s nose and he smiled.
Marinette put her hand to her chest, feeling the ladybug through the thick material of the sweater. She smiled up at him, cheeks pink. “Thank you. It’s perfect.” ___________________________
“You know, Adrien can’t believe you’re moving with Marinette. He’s honestly shocked,” Alya said casually, flicking through the hangers of dresses. They both looked over at the sound of Marinette’s laugh to see Adrien follow her into a dressing room, arms full of new clothes for her to try on. “He can be a little dense though.”
“It helps that he’s pretty,” Nino replied warily.
Alya nodded. “There is that. And he’s smart when it comes to plenty of other stuff. He just misses the social cues sometimes.”
“Uh-huh.”
“So, he doesn’t see what is super obvious.”
Nino glanced towards the dressing room. “Just say what you want to say, Al.”
“Fine. When did you realize you’re in love with Marinette?” Alya asked.
Nino swallowed thickly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Don’t play dumb with me, Lahiffe. I won’t tell, promise.” She turned to him and adjusted her glasses. “It’s been obvious for years but I’m thinking you didn’t know until recently.”
He frowned and watched Marinette push a laughing Adrien back out of the dressing room and throw a balled up blouse at him. “It was a Tuesday,” he said quietly. “Nothing even happened really. We were in my room, watching a movie, and she had fallen asleep on me.” He paused, a small smile spreading across his lips. “I don’t know that she’s ever made it through a whole movie.”
Alya smiled back at him but didn’t speak, afraid of spooking him and not getting the rest of the story.
“She was curled against me and snoring and she was warm and beautiful and…and I just remember it clicking into place that I love her and it felt like the most right thing in the world.” His cheeks flushed and he dared a quick look at Alya. “Please don’t tell her.”
She held up a hand. “I won’t, but I think you should.”
Nino glanced back at the dressing area to see Marinette strut out in a pencil skirt and do an exaggerated model walk, tossing her hair and turning when she reached Adrien. He was laughing and said something Nino couldn’t make out. Marinette turned pink and looked towards them, waving awkwardly. Alya laughed and waved back and Marinette quickly crossed back to the dressing room.
“I can’t,” he said, shaking his head. “She needs a friend right now, someone who can help her over there. It’s going to be an all new experience and you know how she can stress herself out.”
Alya finally pulled a dress off the rack and patted his shoulder. “You’re a good guy, Nino. I’m glad she has you.” She took a few steps and then turned back to him. “I’m glad you have her too,” she winked and left him standing there to wonder what in the world that meant.
Merry Christmas, friend!!! <3

Riverdale Season 5 Episode 3 Review – Chapter 79: Graduation

Riverdale Season 5 Episode 3
“Are we doomed to just be haunted by this town for the rest of our lives?”
So asks Jughead Jones in this most emotional episode of Riverdale, and it’s a question that is uttered almost rhetorically even though we all know the answer. There’s a valedictorian feel to this installment in every sense, one that subtextually speaks of how the series is closing the door on what is what in order to reinvent itself. And friends, it’s arguably the most grounded episode the show has ever done…and maybe the best?
I’ve mentioned previously how weird it is whenever Riverdale focuses on aspects of normal teenage life. High school has never been a huge part of the program, so graduation feels like an necessary obstacle that must be hurdled in order to get these characters into their respective futures. Realizing this, episode writer (and show co-creator) Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has crafted a graceful farewell to Riverdale High that is more about dealing with the consequences of the past than graduation itself.
Always the best speechmaker on the show, Betty’s succinct graduation address acknowledges how easy it is for innocence to slip away. “Stay young for as long as possible, even if it’s only for one more moment,” she sincerely states, gravely aware of how the mayhem inflicted by the Black Hood, the Gargoyle King, Jingle Jangle, and all of Riverdale’s ills have fractured the psyches of the next generation.
It is an issue the Cooper family has dealt with repeatedly, and was even doing so while Betty was speaking to the community and her peers. For the impact of Riverdale life has again hit home, this time by Jellybean’s actions as The Auteur. In an attempt to save Jellybean before she is consumed by her demons, F.P. decides to take her back to Toledo — back to Gladys and something resembling a normal life.
The collateral damage is massive. Alice loses her partner, Jellybean loses her brother, the town loses the best sheriff it has ever had. (F.P. demanding that Hiram Lodge reinstall Tom Keller as sheriff is the sort of delightful contrivance that only this series can get away with).
Time and again on Riverdale we’ve heard characters give speeches that the town residents must “do better.” Now that there are proven examples of how the madness of the town is impacting its youngest citizens, will anything change? Narratively, it’s doubtful. And a “normal” Riverdale would be a hell of a dull place.
But what feels revolutionary here is that this episode is excellent while still being rooted firmly in reality. Riverdale can still be compelling by just focusing on the friendships that bind these characters without relying on narrative gimmicks. This may break the show, but it could also rebirth it.
That said, I still want zombies.
This episode was originally intended to be last year’s season finale before Covid-19 halted production. In many ways though it feels like a series wrap up. As the credits roll we have all of the characters separated. Archie has decided to the join the Army, with Betty, Veronica and Jughead away and estranged at their respective colleges. Cheryl remains in Riverdale, determined to rehabilitate the Blossom family image while her beloved Toni is away at school.
Jughead tells us as the episode concludes that the gang will be brought back together by a new mystery six years later. We don’t as of yet know what that is, and the anticipation is exhilarating. Bring on next week!

Riverdale Rundown
• The baseball card included in the time capsule from the Class of 1945 was for Ambrose “Rocket” Pipps, which was the name of a minor character who primarily appeared in Bob Bolling’s melancholy Little Archie comics. (He was an outsider who Archie would regularly bully, often brutally so). The character also made an appearance in the Life with Archie: The Married Life series, this time as a business partner of Archie’s.
• Riverdale has been renewed for a sixth season, so we can expect this show’s craziness to go on indefinitely.
• Penelope Blossom skulking about in the bushes after graduation was a hilarious bit of business. And by her turning herself in to the authorities, she should be out in about six years…which is also the length of the time jump the show is about to go through.
• After all that these characters have gone through, is a kiss that really didn’t mean anything between Archie and Betty that big of a deal?
• What will Mr. Lodge do now? And, more importantly, does anyone really care?
• This episode was full of emotional gut punches, with my three favorites being the Fred flashback, F.P. and Alice’s farewell, and the beautifully orchestrated farewell between Archie and his friends on the side of the road.
• Archie’s suggestion that he and his friends all meet up at Pop’s one year after graduation had big Wet Hot American Summer vibes. Maybe no one but Jug showed up because everyone else was too busy fondling their sweaters?
• In the episode’s biggest dick move, Mr. Weatherbee tells Archie he has to repeat his senior year then immediately asks for a favor — having him sing at graduation. Speaking of this, it made me feel like a fossil to realize that Archie and the gang probably think of “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” as an oldie.
• Speaking of which, I openly giggled when Archie started singing Green Day. Given the characters’ comic book longevity I thought that Alphaville’s “Forever Young” would have been a better choice, albeit a tad on the nose.
• “Maybe a little normal high school angst is good for us,” says Jughead, moments before a little normal high school angst rips he and his friends apart.
• Mr. Weatherbee is sporting a glove on his right hand as a result of losing a few fingers during his escape from The Farm.
• While the fate of the core four is largely uncertain, we do know from his appearance in the future-set Katy Keene that Kevin Keller goes on to become the drama teacher at Riverdale High. It would have been nice though for the show to take a moment to address his (and Reggie’s for that matter) future plans.
• Pop Tate once again has ownership of the Chok’lit Shoppe. Expect this plotpoint to play a big role in the rest of this season.
• The name of the four Riverdale High students who went off to war (and who haunt Archie throughout this episode) are Carl Callahan, Walt “Wildcat” Wright, Ab Ackerman, and Gordy Greene. I’m guessing these are super deep cut Archie/pop culture references that even I don’t know. If you recognize their significance, let us know.
• Cheryl pulls a The Red Circle comic out of the vintage time capsule, this is a reference to the super heroes whose publisher, MLJ, later became Archie Comics.
• Will Jughead now be hatless in future episodes of Riverdale? If so, I’m going to be VERY upset.
• Kevin including Josie’s cat ears in the new time capsule is a fantastic tribute to his step sister, and a character whose fate in the TV Archieverse is unknown following the cancellation of Katy Keene.
• It was great to hear Penelope call Cheryl (dressed in red for graduation, obviously) “nightmare child” once again.
• While effective, Betty’s commencement speech was easily the shortest in television history.
• The fact that there are Serpents in seemingly every major city will never not be hilarious to me.
• It’s nice to see that Vegas is alive and well. This dog has been so neglected on the series that I expect him to turn up on one of those Sarah McLachlan commercials.
• Jughead’s narration of the gang drifting apart following graduation was clearly inspired by the end of Stand By Me. (God knows these kids have seen enough dead bodies in their day).
• Hermione Lodge spending a summer in the Hamptons with Andy Cohen and starring on The Real Housewives of New York City? Chef’s kiss.
• Next week: The fifth season of Riverdale gets properly underway, and I for one can’t wait to see what happens next.

When you want to know which type of story you may be reading...
So one thing I like to think about when reading a story is what type of story it is. When I was writing (academic folks!) I found out there were 7 archetypes types of stories that could be used, but in fact there are many other ways of identifying which story you are reading – and sometimes it is fun to guess. So I took look at what authors think about story tropes or archetypes and found the following. this is far from comprehensive, but it is a bit of fun research. The Kurt Vonnegut Jr 8 forms/tropes of stories.
Kurt Vonnegurt is very well respected for his story analysis. He made a map of his analysis against time.
He made a visual mapping of the length of the story against the time inhabited by the story and the different ups and downs each classic/trope will take. Helps explains how when you feel unsatisfied by a storyline it is often because you are still waiting for the next point to occur.
On the other hand Ken Miyamoto, Produced screenwriter, former Sony Pictures script reader/story analyst, former Sony Studios liaison claims that these are the story tropes.
Coming of Age – Seemingly innocent (although not always so) youth experience the evils, trials, and tribulations of the real world. Stand by Me, To Kill a Mockingbird, Almost Famous, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, The Graduate, American Graffiti, etc.
Revenge – Our most primal instinct. We see and read stories of revenge in nearly every genre. In film we have Mad Max, Carrie, Death Wish, Once Upon a Time in the West, Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, Gladiator, Election, Munich, The Counte of Monte Cristo, Hang ‘Em High, Memento, etc.
The Great Battle – An individual or group of people in conflict with others. This ranges from epic battles (War movies, Lord of the Rings) to comedy (War of the Roses) to science fiction (Star Wars, Terminator franchise, etc.).
Love and Friendship – Love stories (Romeo and Juliet, Romantic comedies), buddy movies (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Lethal Weapon), dramas about friendship (The Big Chill), etc.
The Big Mystery – There’s a mystery to be solved, and the protagonist has to solve it. You’re looking at classic characters in the likes of Sherlock Holmes, Tin Tin, Nancy Drew, etc. Comedies like The Pink Panther series. Agatha Christy novels. Tom Clancy and John Grisham novels and movie adaptations.
The Great Journey – This theme follows characters dealing with trials and tribulation during travels… many of which are epic. Huckleberry Finn, Apocalypse Now (Heart of Darkness in literature form), The Odyssey, Star Wars, and probably the best example in both film and literature, Lord of the Rings.
The Noble Sacrifice – The protagonist sacrifices himself for others. Glory, Armageddon, war movies where a character dies for his fellow soldiers, etc.
The Fall From Grace – Showing humans going where only God should go, doing what only God should do, or attempting to do what humans shouldn’t do. You look at films and novels like Jurassic Park, Splice, Frankenstein, etc. And then look into science films like A.I. and even Terminator, where we as humans have gone too far in trying to create life… and it backfires on us. Then into the horror genre with the aforementioned Frankenstein and even Stephen King’s Pet Semetary.
And Reedsy gives you 14 Fantasy tropes:
September 3, 2018
Fantasy tropes, like any other type of literary trope, are recurring images, themes, or devices that are used to the point of being common conventions amongst its genre.
When writing a genre such as fantasy (with such well-known conceits), authors often feel the need to straddle a fine line: include too many tropes and readers will get déjà vu; don’t include a single cliché and you risk losing readers who have come to expect certain themes and touchstones from a fantasy novel.
The thing is, conventions commonly crop up in stories because most of them contain some element of universal relatability — and people enjoy the familiar.
So embrace the balancing act by acquainting yourself with some of the most popular fantasy tropes out there, and by learning how to prevent your characters, plots, and worlds from becoming a complete cliche
Character tropes
At their heart, all stories are about characters who represent some aspect of human nature — and fantasy is no exception. Many novels in this genre feature archetypes, which is not necessarily a bad thing — so long as your characters’ development aligns with the narrative arc and doesn’t rely on cliché pitstops.
1) The Chosen One
A character who is alone capable of fulfilling an important purpose, and whose responsibility is to resolve the plot’s main conflict — which will often be to save the world.
2) The Secret Heir
An orphan ends up being the long-lost scion to a royal throne. Often, this character is raised on a farm or another humble situation that contrast their true lineage. Maybe they lost their parents at a young age and sent away for their own protection. Perhaps they were switched at birth in some sort of hilarious misunderstanding. Maybe their mother had a summer fling with an undercover prince in her gap year.
3) The Evil Overlord
Fire and brimstone, darkness and inhospitable lands, the Evil Overlord usually lives in a realm that reflects their wicked intentions, surrounded by their minions and followers. The Evil Overlord is also often bent on world domination.
4) The Reluctant Hero
The protagonist is thrust down the path of a story they don’t wish to be a part of. They long to return to normal life and only continue on their quest out of obligation or necessity. Think of it as the difference between Frodo (who wishes to return to the Shire but knows a task must be completed) and Conan the Barbarian, who relishes the role of rough-hewn hero. Often, the Reluctant Hero is also the Chosen One.
5) The Lucky Novice
This sometimes manifests when a character who has had never attempted a specific activity before is suddenly extremely talented at that specific skill. Other times it’s presented in the form of a protagonist — who’s had a moderate amount of training — defeating the villain who has been honing their powers for years or decades (or even centuries).
6) The Mentor
Usually an elderly character who prepares the protagonist for whatever conflict they are facing. The Mentor often leaves before the big climax — whether they are killed, retire, or have to leave to carry out a job elsewhere — forcing the protagonist to stand on their own two feet.
Worldbuilding tropes
While the many subgenres of fantasy will all have their own tropes, here are a few worldbuilding conventions that you’re bound to see more often than not.
7) The World That Never Progresses
When a novel of series covers a society through the ages — but that world seems never change or progress. It could be a century later, but no social, technological, political, or cultural developments seem to have occurred. This one is fairly typical of high fantasy, which usually take place on grand, epic scales. ( and the one that really irritates me about Game of Thrones. Surely by now they have learnt how to fix holes in wooden doors!
8) The Pseudo-European Medieval Setting
A feudal system governing a society where taverns are frequented and duel-by-swords are a daily occurrence. The stories don’t usually take place in actual Europe, but a world that very much resembles the continent’s medieval era. This setting is a mainstay of fantasy — significantly solidified in the genre by The Lord of the Rings, but harking back to European folklore and tales of King Arthur.
9) The Powerful Artifact
This convention is used across all types of genres: an object of great power must be saved from falling into the wrong hands. The object is typically inanimate and derives its power from the manipulation of those who use it. The object might not be inherently evil, but its powers can have the effect of tempting and corrupting even the noblest characters.
10) The Homogenous Species
All elves are beautiful and love trees, and all dwarves are obsessed with gold and living underground, right? Categorizing entire races into a few commonalities is typical of fantasy novels, and if one character from that race differs, you can bet they’re an outlier — and often the protagonist of the novel (or a trusty sidekick). Another common feature of this trope is when one species is inherently “good”, and another is inherently “bad.”
Plot tropes
The Plot is the chain of events that comprise your narrative arc. Many fantasy novels will share a link or two (or seven) in common with other novels, including these:
11) The Waiting Evil
Long, long ago, an evil force is defeated in battle and locked away, never to wreak havoc again. That is, of course, until now. Having bided its time, the evil entity breaks free with an eye for vengeance. This Waiting Evil might break free of their own volition, might be released by an avid supporter (that is usually then disposed of — hello, Peter Pettigrew), or it might be released accidentally by an unknowing passerby or by natural causes.
12) The “Here Comes the Cavalry” Twist
All is lost. The villain and their minions are too strong and despite a noble fight, the jig is up. The heroes simply can’t hold off the opposition any longer. Time to lay down and die. But wait! Do you hear that? It’s faint, but growing louder. It’s… it’s… it’s the heroes’ friends, showing up in the nick of time to save the day! Hooray! Not all is lost!
13) The Black and White Morality Theme
The battle between “good” and “evil” is such a prevalent theme in fantasy — and it’s no wonder. When it strays to a cliché is when the line between good and evil is perceived as black and white, with no grey area. The good guys are purely good, and the bad guys are pure evil — end of story. Often, the good guys manage to defeat the bad guys without killing a soul or even wrecking a single building.
14) The Quest
The hero — and usually a handful of secondary characters — sets out on a quest with a specific goal. Typically the goal ranges from saving a princess, defeating a villain, destroying a corrupt artifact, or finding someone. The goal of the quest doesn’t matter as much as the fact that there is a solid one. While The Quest very closely resembles The Hero’s Journey, there are key differences between the two story structures: while the former is all about the character’s journey to achieve a goal, the latter is more about the character’s inner journey than the actual objective. Appearing Hatless in Public
“It really boils down to symptoms. Pregnant replies, mystic delusions, mistaken identities, arguing his father is his mother, that sort of thing; intimations of suicide, foregoing of exercise, loss of mirth, and claustrophobia not to say delusions of imprisonment; invocations of camels, chameleons, capons, whales, weasels, hawks, handsaws – riddles, quibbles and evasions; amnesia, paranoia, myopia; daydreaming, hallucinations; stabbing his elders, abusing his parents, insulting his lover, and appearing hatless in public – knock-kneed, droop- stockinged and sighing like a love sick schoolboy, which at his age is coming on a bit strong.”
— Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
