every few years there's a rape case that isn't unique in its brutality but ends up receiving media attention, to which the indian public protests and then leaves. it happened with nirbhaya, unnao, kathua, hathras and now rg kar in kolkata. like genuinely at what point are we going to learn and make strides...and these are just the publicized ones

i’m just a girl
i sit in front of the T.V as another brutal rape case happens, aboslutely distraught, full of rage and rattled to my very core. the same emotions i felt when i first heard about nirbhaya case, kathua case, hathras case, unnao gang rape, a new born rape case in indore and almost every other rape incident i have read/ heard about. then i realise that these cases always keep happening because nothing ever happens after these cases.
a doctor getting viciously, inhumanely gangraped and murdered in her own workplace on a night shift by the very interns of that hospital for what? serving her nation? saving lives? making sure to keep others lives first before her? she gave her heart and soul to her country and then what, the country lets down another woman, in another place, another time, another new story. for 15 days everyone will keep on discussing it, then what? we wait for another case to happen to finally take some action? i don’t even dare to imagine the final plight of these young women and girls. how their nation let them down, how they hoped things would change but they never did. i wonder how every day several women get raped but apart from sending their ‘deep condolences’ these hypocrite politicians don’t do anything. how the absolute inadequacy of our justice system has led to the audacity of animals like these perpetrators to increase day by day. they continue with heinous crimes like these, get certain people to protect them and get away.
the absolute hypocrisy of indian society to always teach their daughters to be in check, to come home at time, don’t go out alone etc, because they say ‘ki logon ki soch badalne se accha hai tum badal jao aur tum safe raho’ so you’re telling me that these cases will keep on happening but i need to be cautious? instead of giving a piece of mind to your sons, you’ll just say ‘men will be men’?
i don’t even dare to step out of my home without my brother because how can i? if this can happen to any woman, someone’s daughter, sister, wife, mother, then it can happen to any female anywhere. then again is anything going to change? no. will these criminals get away? yes. will cases like these ever stop? no.
since nothing will ever fucking change, girls “remember to cover yourself, don't wear revealing clothes, don't go out at night, keep someone with you even in your damn workplace….” the list goes on and you know how that goes because excuses for rape are there but the consequences of rape never follow.
well apart from writing about it, what else can i do? i’m helpless after all i’m just a girl.. ~ arisha

The Hathras Incident: A Case That Shook India's Conscience
In the heart of Uttar Pradesh lies a quiet village that, until recently, was unknown to most of the country. However, in September 2020, Hathras became a name that reverberated across India, not for its rustic charm, but for a tragedy that exposed deep cracks in the nation’s justice system and law enforcement. The alleged gang rape and subsequent death of a young Dalit woman raised uncomfortable…

74 years of Independence; have we learnt nothing?
A simple Google search will show you the meaning of the word Dalit as ‘broken/scattered’ in Sanskrit. The word ‘Dalit’ was first used by Indian social activist Jyotiba Phule and was translated as a meaning for the oppressed or depressed classes, the term Scheduled Castes (SC) is used in legal terms. Then Dr. B.R. Ambedkar started using the word Dalit in a much wider context, including people at the lowest rungs of the caste hierarchy. A community that has been subjected to all kinds of oppression or discrimination.
There are a lot of questions that come to my mind when I read about the Dalit atrocities. Why is it that even after 74 years of Independence, a community with a population as large as 200 million is living under horrifying conditions? Why do basic human rights not apply to Dalits? Why does the dominant caste only pay attention to caste issues when monstrous acts are inflicted on their community? Why did the Uttar Pradesh government think an ‘international plot’ to defame the party was more plausible than a gang-rape of a 19-year-old Dalit girl? According to the National Crimes Bureau, Uttar Pradesh records the highest number of atrocities against SC in India. Why then, did it take the CM almost a month to reluctantly order a CBI probe in the Hathras case?
The history of injustices faced by this community, and the emotional and physical trauma they are put through, is dehumanising. They live in constant fear of oppression by the upper castes, face segregation in their neighbourhood, are given menial jobs; 1 million Dalits work as manual scavengers. Most of them are not entitled to education, they are deprived of the resources and access to affordable living. Government bodies, media, and dominant castes citizens do not value the humanity of Dalits. Caste is used as per the convenience of the ruling party and the privileged sections of society. Civic protests are given the name of riots, when the rights of the marginalised communities are in question.
We talk about India’s development in terms of education, healthcare and electricity for all, but an entire quarter of India’s population living in appalling conditions is ignored. Dalits only get a minimum number of seats in the parliament. Their representation in government, media, entertainment, offices, newsrooms etc., is only bare minimum. How will their voices be amplified if they are not present in any leadership roles? Policies for the oppressed castes are made by the dominant castes; they are oblivious of the experiences, yet they are responsible for making decisions for them
India’s Constitution is glorified, liberal, modern and forward-looking, but we live by the mindsets which are a thousand years old. We do not live by the principles and the values that our Constitution laid down for us. Ironically, the father of the constitution, Dr B.R Ambedkar, was a Dalit man himself. Reservation should be made more acceptable and expandable as even today, it can change the lives of a huge chunk of India’s population.
There are gender and caste-based hierarchies within the community as well, where it is way worse off for Dalit women. They are treated as almost dispensable, hence facing the largest number of crimes, majority of which go unreported. According to the NCRB data, more than 4 Dalit women are raped every day. There is a sheer lack of justice for these women.
Sumeet Blue, a student activist, said, “If a small section of Dalit women activists had to debate the fundamental ground of Caste in the incident to famed urban educated feminists, one could only imagine what Dalits in these villages & small towns have to live through amidst Thakurs living in their medieval feudal pride.” It is about time the privileged castes passed the baton to the oppressed castes, sensitise with their issues and amplify their voices. And in order to be allies in this process, the first step is to educate ourselves. Read, listen and understand the plight and injustices faced by our fellow citizens, make the legal systems more accountable. There is a need for change, for structural reforms, for appropriate and long due representation. The change will be a drastic one, not readily accepted, and in the words of Divya Malhari (a Dalit writer), this change can take place when you “Make it your cause, and fight.”

The whole world watched the police hurriedly cremate the body of a gangrape victim in Hathras and the court entirely dismiss the case of gang rape. Every trace of the victim and the crime systematically erased. No dignity even in death.
The victim’s sister-in-law said: “We are not Hindu, because we are never counted”. Where is the lie?

Hathras rape and murder case: Indian court clears three of four accused
On Thursday, a court in Hathras town said that only one of the four accused – who all belonged to a higher caste – was found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and for offences under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, which deals with crimes against Dalits and tribal people. #Hathras #rape #murder #case #Indian #court #clears #accused

If you think the position of the prime minister and president is where institutional power begins and ends, you are wrong and have an extremely simplistic view
If you think the police force in this country does not have a caste problem, then you are wrong. Hathras has shown us that upper caste men can rape and murder a Dalit girl and get away with it. Police brutality against Dalits, police refusing to register cases against the accused if they are upper caste, half hearted attempts at investigation, extreme brutality against the accused if they happen to be marginalized. If these are not symptoms of a larger institutional problem, then what is?
Darshan Solanki and Dr Payal Tadvi have shown us that no matter what your achievements in academics, if you come from a lower caste, you will be treated like dirt and the institutional authorities will look the other way, if not outright encouraging it. Darshan Solanki's accused was even acquitted in Court. In fact, Dalits and STs face some of the highest suicide rates in India
Laws mean zilch if institutions won't implement them despite having the power to do so. If you are silent in the face of injustice, then you are also perpetuating the injustice. If institutions are not proactive on combatting the discrimination, then they are siding with the oppressors.
Indian institutions are casteist. Casteism is institutionalized in India. This is the harsh truth
Oh and by the way, I am not making an issue out of everything I see online, I am speaking from my personal experiences as a Dalit, I am speaking from my own lived reality

Have...
Ha-have...
Havaha-hahahahahHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
[laughs for the next 1 hour]
Anyway, aaahhh, let's try this again. Have you ever seen anyone this clueless about India's systemic and institutionalized casteism?

TW: Rape
This is with regards to the Hathras Gang Rape of a 19 y/o Dalit Girl in Uttar Pradesh, who was brutally raped by 4 Thakur (upper caste) men on 14th September 2020,her tongue was cut and her spine was crushed resulting in paralysis and multiple fractures. The Uttar Pradesh police did not file the victim's immediately & said that the victim is just "pretending".Also, she was not given proper medical care. Later as the word spread and political as well as social media pressure set in, she was shifted from a normal ward to ICU in Aligarh's Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital. There she breathed her last on 29th September 2020.
The victim herself told her family that she was raped and also named the 4 Thakur men who brutally raped her.
And the brutality does not stop here, due to the social media pressure and fear of mass protests in the upcoming days, the UP police cremated the victim's body at 3am in the dark (against the Hindu law of cremating the body in daylight) without the consent of the family. The victim's family and relatives were locked in their house and barricaded. If this was not enough, the body was burnt with the help of petrol to hurry up the procedure & remove all the evidence of the existence of the victim and the rape.
In the Hyderabad rape case, the rapists burnt the body of the victim but here the UP police did the deed to help the rapists!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Mentioning the caste of the victim is significant because this was not a gender violence but a caste violence. She was raped to show her community the consequences of their actions and how dare they raise their voice against the "Thakurs" of the village.

hathras rape case [TW: RAPE, HORRIFIC DETAILS OF THE INCIDENT, MUTILATION]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(slide credit to: faye dsouza)
so this happened. this is everyday in India. EVERY DAY some girl gets raped and this is how the authorities react. the authorities, the police, the government, the politicians literally take out fucking rallies and protests in FAVOUR of the rapists in this country.
she was 20.. her spine was broken, her body was torn, beaten, her tongue was cut out, her body paralysed and at the end, it broke her spirit. she STILL identified and NAMED her rapists and yet they're walking scot free.
and after all this, even her dead body wasn't handed over to her parents because God knows what more evidence were they hiding.
they're proving time and again that is the JUSTIFIED and LAWFUL treatment of LOWER CASTES, DALITS, MUSLIMS and WOMEN in this country. thank you for making me feel safe. it's deeply appreciated (:
congratulations 🎊 Indians, you guys have done it. bet everyone so safe for their daughters, wives, girlfriends, mothers in this country. we're so proud. this is the Ram Rajya, right? Lord Ram must be so proud of you guys, he must be shedding tears of joy.
raping someone sounds like a charm in new India, right?
