☾ - sleep headcanon for RenRuki

I absolutely do not know where we, the Renruki fandom, got the idea of them sleeping together all cold and huddled in their Inuzuri days but it is universal and it is perfect. I love this headcanon in all its forms and logical extensions, including:

only-one-bedding in moments of personal crisis because they feel sad or lonely and just need comfort

only-one-bedding in moments of actual lack of beds and being like “it’s cool, cool people are always nbd about sharing a bed”

wanting to only-one-bed, but then not, because they’re attracted to each other now and it would be Weird

only-one-bedding and reminiscing about Inuzuri

only-one-bedding and realizing Oh Jeez, This is Not At All Like Inuzuri

to this, I would like to propose the following:

While I think that Rukia and Renji definitely had sex before they were married, I think the fact that Rukia still lives at home and Renji lives at Squad 6 means that overnights weren’t really an option. It’s not something they really talk about, because it seems trivial in the grand scheme of things, but each of them sort of sadly regrets it. So they get married, and they go home to their new place, and they realize they get to share a bed again, and that’s the exact moment when it really hits them that they’re married and this is gonna be great.

First of all, you have a true galaxy brain for even suggesting this combination. The very idea of these two as mature, men-about-town bachelor companions (I mean, I know we usually use this to mean they’re gay, but in this case, they are just two extremely good looking men who enjoy each other’s company), and I had to sit for a minute and just stare off into space.

Anyway, here is my headcanon, which is not exactly compatible with the epilogue, but I do not care!

Aging in Soul Society is so interesting because I think it happens with events, rather than with time. I would love to see both Toushirou and Byakuya come out of the aftermath of the Quincy War with some aging-related effects.

In Toushirou’s case, as a combination of using the advanced form of his bankai and the whole zombification process, I think he actually starts to age at a natural rate again for a while-- slowly but noticably. He’s getting more powerful at the same time, and is able to train more and advance with his bankai, which is obviously something he wants. A lot of his friends, and especially Rangiku and Momo are very excited about this, and he starts to get a number of admirers. However, he doesn’t really feel good about this, in a way he has trouble explaining. He doesn’t feel like he’s grown up, he feels the same, it’s just that his body is different. At the same time, he knows his friends mean well when they tell him how good he looks, or they’re excited that he can drink with them or shop from the men’s section of the clothing store.

I’ve mentioned before that I really would have liked Byakuya to come out of his awful fight with As Nodt with some lasting injuries, and can you imagine if-- (I hope you all are sitting down)-- he gets a white streak in his hair. Maybe at the temples, like Reed Richards. Phew! Obviously, this would be an incredible look on him, and further, it sort of cements his place as a senior captain, even though his position in that respect is due more to the fact that three of the people who have been permanent fixtures of his entire life are suddenly gone. But no matter how distinguished Rukia tells him he looks or how many gossip magazines refer to him as a “silver fox”, Byakuya isn’t feeling it, either. He spent a long time thinking of himself as a young upstart, eager to take his grandfather’s place, but that’s not who he is anymore. He’s got a lieutenant who’s capable of being a captain. His sister is in a serious relationship, and he’s happy she’s happy, but he’s also dreading the day she moves out to get married. He feels like a widower. He feels old.

I don’t imagine that they really talk about it. One of the things that Byakuya and Toushirou really like about each other is that they don’t need to talk things to death. Byakuya actually knows that Toushirou isn’t fond of his adult form, because Toushirou mentioned it during the Gerard fight, and I think one day, B would just be like, “I have noticed that you are growing. How do you feel about that?” and Toushirou would just be like, “I kinda hate it, actually,” and Byakuya would be like, “I am not happy about my hair.” That’s literally all they would say on the matter, but they would both feel a lot better because they know the other one really understands, and that’s all they really need: just one person to understand this weird feeling they are having.

Then, some time would pass, and it would become the new normal, and one day, Toushirou would go to Matsumoto and say “We’re ready,” and Matsumoto’s eyes would get really big and sparkly. A month later, the Shinigami Women’s Association announces a new double-feature photobook: Men of Culture. Toushirou and Byakuya maintain complete creative control over it, so it’s just pictures of them playing shogi and drinking tea and wearing classy outfits that cover them from neck to ankle, although there is one “working man” shot of each of them (Toushirou is making an ice sculpture, Byakuya is tending his orchids) where they have their sleeves tied back. It sells out immediately.
