Had a free week, so I decided to catch up with IDW Sonic (had stopped with the end of the Metal Virus Saga) and I'm particularly surprised with how much I hate Lanolin the Sheep, she made it to my top 5 hated characters from an arc to other, almost a blink.
She's easily competition for Geoffrey St. John and Mina Mongoose who I always thought would never be surpassed... I thought I would never feel such disgust in seeing a character appearing since the reboot...
The worst part is that (somehow) there are FANS of this bitch who think she's amazing?????
By all means Ian Flynn really surpassed himself in one aspect: the ability to make a female character created by other person who works/worked in the same Sonic comic an unbearable rude bitch
Btw, sorry for bringing this discourse for you (really sorry, I saw a tip of it), and hope you have a good time writing your fanfic Stellar
For me, Surge is still the worst of the lot.
You could make an argument for other characters having bigger reasons for inspiring contempt, but Surge is just so relentlessly annoying, so groan-inducing to even look at, so pathetically shilled even for IDW standards (Stanley thinking Forces would radically shift its plot for the better if Surge was in it), that I can't stand her at all. More than any other OC made for the comic, Surge best reflects everything wrong with it.
Lanolin is in the same category as Tangle, in that I just feel sad rather than angry when I think about her. Forced to become another Sally clone, with no chance to ever become her own person. And while ABT says this is all fine and on-point for his creation, I'm pressing X to doubt on that. For all the complaints directed at the games for allegedly playing it safe, the Archie chokehold is killing the opportunity for new personalities.

➤ Take A Look | Accepting (slowly)
↳ @ofteaandmagic asked: For Mina: send CHANGED for a scene from my muse's past that represented a turning point in their life
{➹} – SHE WAS SURPRISED TO see the hedgehog only just waking up when she got out of the shower, still in bed but sitting up when she exited the bathroom and stepped into the bedroom again, towelling off her hair. She noticed with no small amount of humor the look that came over his face when he saw her, that tired almost dishevelled look coupled with surprise. But, unlike her original thought, his words dispelled her suspicion that it was because he wasn't expecting to see her in just a towel that morning.
"You're...still here?"
She laughed, giving him a look settled between amused and prying. It wasn't that weird she had stayed over. Not in her mind, though she did have to remind herself that the hedgehog was a little different when it came to certain expectations, but in a cute way. "Yeah? Something wrong with that?"
"No, just...one more thing I didn't expect, I guess," he admitted, somewhat sheepishly but his smile was almost appreciative. He had plenty to thank her for, but he had a feeling saying as much might just get him laughed at. He was still very much out of his element here. "I'll have t' add it t' the list."
"Then you'll probably be super surprised we'd usually do breakfast too. Unfortunately, I have a sound check to get too, and I'm already running a little late. If you can call it that, not like they can do anything without me," she smirked, that air of confidence about her still managing to throw the hero for a loop and it showed. It only made her smiled more as she started gathering up her clothes, stopping only to sit on the edge of the bed to take one of his hands and give it a gentle squeeze when she was done. "We should do this again sometime though."
She had to hold back actual laughter as he blinked, utterly puzzled. "What do you mean...?"
"You know exactly what I mean. Even you're not that dense, Blue." Though she had to wonder how true that was when he kept staring at her like that. Rolling her eyes, the mongoose gently cupped one of the hedgehog's cheeks, forcing him to look at her, to hear the sincerity in her voice. "I liked spending time with you. And I don't just mean...you know. I liked talking to you, getting to know you. Plus you're not a terrible listener either and that's pretty hard to find."
"Mina..." Sonic's voice trailed off but his expression had morphed to something almost wistful as he raised a hand to cover hers in turn. He did know what she was getting at now, which was made this next part harder. Chaos, he had never had to do this before. Not like this. "I liked it too, I don't think I've talked t' anyone like that, well...ever. But...I can't. An' it has nothing t' do with you, 's...everything else."
It sounded bad, and he hated that. He could only hope she knew what he was getting at too, that what he was saying had nothing to do with what they did or even her. It truly was him, his life. The monumental plight that he lived each and every day, one that showed no signs of stopping. A perpetual Hell.
Sonic gave her hand a squeeze, a bit of desperation in his eyes that even he didn't comprehend. He couldn't drag someone else into this. He just couldn't. "I can't bring you int' this. You don't deserve that, not when you have the beginnings of your career ahead of you an' a ton of better options that don't involve you either being half scared t' death or wondering how you're going t' stop the next robot army from levelling a city without dying."
For a moment, she said nothing, unsure of what to say before she defaulted to what was supposed to be humor, but it didn't quite come out that way in her consternation. "You make it sound so glamorous..."
"'S not." His voice cut across firmly, and that made Mina frown as the enormity hit her. It was just like last night, that look in his eyes, that turmoil, was too real. He was terrified, but not for himself. It would have been touching in a way if it hadn't been so painful. "It's really not. I wouldn't wish this on anyone, especially someone like you. I...can't even say I'll ever be ready so 'm not going t' give you that hope. But I...I do appreciate it."
The mongoose remained quiet, but he could see that what he said had struck a chord with her. Sonic could only hope she didn't take any of the last few hours as a bad thing. He wasn't that kind of guy, but he couldn't start something he knew he likely wouldn't around to finish, or even truly enjoy. It wasn't fair, not to her.
And, in truth, part of her did understand but the young singer's mind had trailed off in a completely different direction. She couldn't get over that look, the fear. Couldn't get over how the hedgehog in front of her was only shy of a year older than her, that they were the same age and lead vastly different lives. Not once had she ever had to fear for her life, not once did the mongoose end up maimed in a hospital, never had to fight for her life. Never had to worry her actions could be life or death for someone else.
But Sonic did. Every damn day.
All Mina wanted was for her music to have meaning, to speak her mind and not give a rat's ass what other's thought. She wanted to uplift and empower without censoring herself, to make a difference doing what she did best. She couldn't fight, and she would respect his choice in not starting something at what had to be the worst possible time for him, but there was something else she could do.
She had a voice, one people would listen to. And she was sure as hell going to use it. She would always use it to help those who couldn't speak for themselves, people who were undermined and taken for granted. People like Sonic.

🫂👻💄🎶 + Surge the Tenrec headcanons?
A friendship headcanon:
Kit's her best friend. Even though she'll never admit that to him in her life, she also thinks her relationship with Kit is better and healthier than Sonic's relationship with Tails. She thinks her bond with him is stronger because of what they went through together.
👻 A headcanon about what scares them:
I think I've mentioned my headcanon that Surge hates being in water with other critters like fish, sea slugs, crabs, frogs, sea urchins, etc. It's not so much fear, as the idea of one touching her irrationally grosses her out and triggers a fight or flight reaction. My reasoning is both to give her that parallel with Sonic's fear of water and also stemming from her being stuck in a water tube for an undetermined amount of time. I could also see her being claustrophobic for the same reason.
If you ask her though she's not afraid of anything "No I'm not scared Kit, keep that hermit crab away from me!"
💄 An appearance headcanon:
Surge's image & fashion sense is what separates her from squeaky clean no-pants Sonic. So everything on her she considers her own unique signature style. No one else is allowed to wear that shade of yellow & black (except Kit because he's her accessory) or those studded bangles. That's hers. Don't touch it or it'll be the last thing you ever wear.
She also wouldn't be caught dead wearing Sonic's shade of red white & blue
🎶 A headcanon about music:
Sonic knows how to play guitar so one time Surge tried to play guitar to beat him at his own game. It went very badly and several guitars got broken in the process.
Also also, the only popular music star she follows is Mina Mongoose, metal's idol and secretly follows her on the same level as a Swiftie follows Taylor Swift. Otherwise she just listens to any kind of indie punk metal she can get her hands on but is bad at remembering the band's names.

Hmm... 1, 2, 3, any of your fandoms.
Gonna do these for Sonic since it's my favorite
list 3 positive things about your current fandom(s)
The Sonic fandom easily has some of THE most creative people of any fandom. The sheer scope of some of the stuff fans make, from fanart to mods to fangames and fancharacters to even ENTIRE MOVIES is insane and it's one of the things that keeps me going
On that note, the incredible amount of effort the fandom puts into teaching, preserving, and unearthing its history is nothing but awe inspiring. I'm not a SATAM guy, but shoutouts to the SATAM fandom for managing to make MULTIPLE conservation projects. Also shoutouts to the people who manage to get original game scripts, concept art, etc, and even ask creatives about stuff. It's awesome to me as a history major that they care so damn much
Honestly for all the shit Sonic fans get for being abrasive, nitpicky, obsessive, etc, it's a surprisingly approachable fandom for newcomers. I've rarely seen a fandom so welcoming to Sonic fans of all ages, idenitities, etc. It's awesome.
2. a headcanon you weren't sure about at first but have come to like Ooo this one is tough. I'd say that the big one for me is actually also canon-adjacent
There was a solid while where I never gel'd with the idea of Sally getting her redesign (and ring blades) after getting derobotocized, but @tracingpapier's AU REALLY sold me on the idea Also shoutouts to them in general for making some banger art and AUs 3. a character that fandom has helped you appreciate Oh man there's too many to count, so I'll go down a list and name the people, if any, that helped me to do so -Mina Mongoose (Used to hate her now she's one of my faves from the pre-reboot) -Fiona Fox (my ex friend Pidgeonspen) -Team Hooligan (A LOT of my ex friends and Mocha)
-Breezie (Marksandflops and Pidgeonspen) -Lanolin -Hope Kintobor -Antoine D'Coolette (Mocha and Rachelbethines. I liked them before but those two really helped me appreciate him a lot more) -Rouge -Julie Su (Still not a great character but I appreciate what she is a bit more now) -Amy Rose

Morganic Musings
20th November 1998 saw the 65th issue of Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic escape its continental cargo confines and reach the hands of Australian retailers. For us then-avid readers, it meant hopping on a bike after school to make that traditional end-of-month pledge over to the local newsagent, ready to swap a hard-earned $3.95 (and any extra loose change for an ice block when possible) for another enthralling escape to Mobius.
And yet it all felt different this time.
In the aptly titled The Fellowship of the Rings, audiences were introduced to the story of Nate Morgan. Having cameoed in the previous issue (released here on 22nd October '98 for the curious), this humble human sheltered the battered Sonic and Tails into his isolated tundra abode, while giving that nuisance Ixis Naugus a well-deserved booting out. The small, seemingly insignificant old man would prove anything but, as the issue recounted his adventures and adversities over the decades; from creating and refining the Power Rings, serving as key member of Royal Acorn court, even establishing how the Lake of Rings operated while visiting the future Knothole Village and Freedom Fighters' underground HQ
The road from concept to completion for this character was far from easy, and for years looked as though he'd never see the light of day. Morgan's origins can be traced all the way back to early 1992 during DiC's initial development of their Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons, where he was depicted in their story bible as a 110 year old black human with flowing white beard living in Knothole. A former environmental advisor now proud Freedom Fighter, he was a friend to all animals, offering advice/support and boosting morale where he could with the occasional magic trick. Two rough sketches accompanied his profile, with the choice of tall or short designs.
By the time 1997 rolled around, a copy of that story bible and designs made their way into Archie's office. Having combed through its contents, editor Justin Gabrie decided the character deserved a second chance and ordered his inclusion in the comic. The task fell on newly-minted head writer Karl Bollers to breathe life into the character opting to go with the shorter model, which artist Patrick Spaziante imbued with his Midas touch. And lo, the old man was reborn a new old man.
I genuinely liked Nate Morgan (or as my younger self used to mispronounce him, "Mor-Gain". Hey, we all do stupid things from time to time) as a character. His appearance in the comic was something of a revelation, especially in a pre-Adventure era where the idea of other humans let alone a whole city of them living on Mobius was pretty farfetched. It added intriguing new layers to the series' lore, nor could I say no to another kindly father figure at a time when the likes of King Max and Locke were anything but. His backstory of seeking acceptance only to find hate and deception at every turn really touched a nerve, and was saddened to pick up and see his demise years later in issue 105's Touch of Evil.
Unfortunately that same hatred manifested in the real-world, and it felt more than a few times that I was the only person who cared.
How disheartening it was to boot up the 25.5kph modem, peruse the message groups and see fellow readers' reactions. Whether it be through dislike of change or some underlying racial prejudice (which he sadly was a target of more than once), fans certainly didn't hold back when voicing their displeasure over the character. A chaotic chorus which only grew as the millennium drew to a close; some hated his sudden importance to the history of Power Rings and the Acorn Kingdom, others thought he'd outright steal the spotlight from Uncle Chuck and Rotor as the residential techspert, the shameless self-insert of Karl Bollers (or Ken Penders depending on which fan you asked), and of course the ever-present decries of "Mr. Walking Plot Device". In that light, early Mina Mongoose fans got off lucky. It would be nice to see Nate Morgan resurrected or even reevaluated in some form or other in future media, but like the rest of the cast, this series had its time and its day. New ideas and characters have since stepped up to fill their void, even if it's quite the pickle finding a similar substitute for him.
But stranger things have happened. His appearance in the first place being the best one.

What d you think of the term "Mary Sue"? Does a Sonic character fit that criteria?
Well, hm. What is the definition of a Mary Sue? It's usually a new person inserted in to a world of pre-established characters, who everybody likes, they have an answer to every problem, and are effectively perfect at everything, right?
As I recall, it literally comes from a 1970s/1980's Star Trek fanfiction where a woman literally named "Mary-Sue" made her way on to the Enterprise and everybody on crew fell in love with her. I believe the climax of the story saw Mary-Sue committing the ultimate act of nobility and sacrificing herself to save the crew, but don't quote me on that.
Generally, the view is that a "Mary Sue" is an author (or viewer) insert. They are best friends with the main cast and go on cool new adventures like they were one of the gang. It's wish fulfillment. That doesn't always have to be the case, and the term has broadened to describe bad, "flawless" characters overall.
Over the years, Sonic has had a couple of Mary Sues, yes.
The one I think of sometimes is in the Archie comics: Mina Mongoose.
Mina was created for one reason, and one reason alone: to complicate Sonic and Sally's "will they/won't they" relationship. She was there to make Sally jealous by drawing Sonic's eye. They even gave her super speed like Sonic, in order to give him someone he could relate to more. All the characters liked Mina, and even Sally couldn't really hate her. Mina even did the ultimate Mary Sue thing and took a bullet for Sally, sacrificing her own life for the main characters (she lived, though).
Later stories featuring Mina tried to make her a little more three-dimensional (particularly when Ian Flynn came in), but she was eventually erased from the continuity when the lawsuit troubles began.
And then of course the biggest and most obvious Mary Sue would be Christopher Thorndyke from Sonic X.
His mother is a famous movie star, his father is an outrageously successful business man. They have an effectively infinite amount of money. Chris doesn't live in a mansion -- it's more accurate to call it a palace. He has his own personal maid and butler. His grandfather is a famous inventor. His uncle is a famous F1 racer (who is now the squad leader of elite highway patrol cops). And he has plenty of friends at school, because he's kind, generous, and likable. The third season of Sonic X even reveals he has a genius-level intellect, just like his grandpa.
In short, this kid has zero flaws. Anything he could ever want in life he either already has, could buy easily, or could even just build. At some point he solves interdimensional travel and tours the galaxy in a spaceship. On top of all that, he gets to hang out with Sonic and be one of his buddies. When viewed like this, it's easy to see why he gets a lot of hate online.
There may be more, but those are the two strongest examples.

Out of the two of them Mina definitely swears the most but, ask anyone, and they'll say that's one of her habits that seems to be rubbing off on her husband. Granted Arrow mostly curses only in Mobian, and neither does it around their daughter, but the mongoose has gotten the hedgehog to lighten up in ways even she never expected.
Mina's just never been afraid to speak her mind, and it's gotten her just as much love as it has hate over the years. But Arrow adores her for it and 99.9% of the time he's in full agreement with what she says.

↳ @familylightfox asked: Light needed some time after returning, and Gibbous wasn't about to disturb him. The toddler carefully went down the steps like she had learned and approached the couple on the couch. The wag of her tail didn't have its usual enthusiasm, but she made an attempt before climbing up and flopping across the hero's lap with a question. "Why… Sawn-ick 'ate Gibbie?" she looked up at them both. "Gibbie do bad?"
{➹} – IT WAS LATER in the evening, which meant Lyra had long since been put to bed and the couple had seen to their regular routine of watching television before heading there themselves. Though whatever was playing on the screen was typically just background noise as the mongoose scrolled through her phone, leaning against her partner as the hedgehog read a magazine or two.
Regardless, the latter had heard Gibbous approaching before she came into view, and while there was a slightly puzzled look on the couple's faces, neither protested when she took to the hero's lap. They had a pretty good suspicion of the reason, and they weren't going to turn her away.
It took an honest moment for the hedgehog to realize she wasn't talking about him though, even as his hand had gone to comb through her fur gently. Mina had caught on right away and scoffed.
"You didn't do anything," Mina was quick to reject that train of thought. However before she could continue Arrow interjected, knowing full well his wife was on the verge of tearing his alterante a new one. Which was awkward in itself but he didn't think Gibbous needed to hear it, or that she cared all that much.
"Some people...just take a while t' warm up t' others," he offered instead, looking down at her with gentle eyes and a like smile. He paused a moment, hesitating before continuing. "And just like Light...your Sonic hasn't had it easy, Kiddo. He shouldn't be taking it out on you, 's never alright, but...I imagine he has a lot going on and doesn't know what t' do about it."
It was hard to describe, and as much as he hated to admit it, he had an idea of what the other was going through. But he would be the first to scold the other for taking it out on a kid, despite knowing full well that Arrow himself had once done the very same thing. It wasn't okay. It just wasn't.
"Mina's right though. You've done nothing wrong. An' as long as Light there's you won't have anything t' worry about. He'll never let anything happen t' you, Gibbous."
