What kind of games do geisha in other towns play? For example in onsen towns like Atami or Tokyo? Is it the same as Kyoto?
Ozashiki games in Kyoto have been researched thoroughly by other people, but outside of Kyoto it's still a bit of a mystery. Also on the matter of culture, I find it a lil funny how the area of São Paulo I lived we called a bunch of stuff that had the equivalent Brazilian name their original Japanese names lol. Whatsa rock paper scissors. You mean jo-ken-pô? Who the fuck is soy sauce. It's shoyu. If you call hashi "chopsticks" or another equivalent we WILL slap your bald head silly
It also applies to Italian words in the same area and that's such a funny mix of words. Like yeah you can use like, words from 3 different countries with nothing in common in the same phrase and we all go "ah yes. A perfectly understandable and normal phrase"

The Rescue Mission: Ken
Ken clenched his fingers around the grip of his spear. Minato had given them all a few minutes to prepare themselves, insisting on holding a strategy meeting with the other two leaders. He turned to look at Aigis, who seemed to never take her eyes off of Minato. He sighed. Aigis would always be the same.
Mitsuru was fencing with Junpei, practicing moves against each other. Ken admitted that his strikes were probably weaker than before, but he had been trying to keep up with his strength between school years. Even so, he cautiously practiced strikes and slashes with his spear through the air, daring any Shadows to come near.
“Hey Ken.” Yukari had walked close to him. “What do you think of those two?” He followed where she pointed to Narukami and Kurusu.
Ken drove the point of his spear into the ground as he thought a moment. “Narukami is pretty big, but he seems nice. His friends like him.” He thought that the gray haired boy gave off a big brother vibe, though he would be cautious about trusting someone like that. “Kurusu is friendly too, and he seems so cool.” Ken admired the other two leaders, but Minato was always the best in his opinion.
“S.E.E.S.! It’s time to get started.” Minato walked back over, so Ken pulled his spear from the ground and unclipped the snap over his Evoker. “From what we’ve seen, this place is just an open area. There’s more hallways ahead, filled with Shadows.” His gray eye locked on to Fuuka, who was talking to the other navis. “We’ll be counting on you three for navigation.”
With that, Minato pointed his sword down the hallway in front of the group, Kurusu and Narukami on either side of him. Ken took a deep breath. He was ready to fight any Shadow that came across his path.
“Take that!” Ken dived down, thrusting his spear through the body of the Shadow beneath him. It dissolved into dust, and he let out a breath of relief. The Shadows hadn’t been too bad here, but there had been a lot. He wasn’t worn out yet, but was rather glad Kurusu and Narukami were with them. The two boys were frighteningly strong, with Narukami being able to take out Shadows in a single swing and Kurusu being so fast Shadows were dead before Ken could even blink.
They had been making considerable progress through the Realm, especially with the help of all three Navis. Ken stretched his shoulder out a little, ready to continue on.
“Good job guys, but be careful! There’s a ton of of strong Shadows up ahead.” Fuuka’s voice echoed around them. “But we think you guys are getting really close to a new area.”
“Let’s go then.” Minato nodded in the direction of the hallway. Ken twirled his spear in his hand and ran after everyone, silently cursing his short stature. He was so distracted that he failed to see the large Shadow lunging at him until it was right in front of him. Ken let out a shriek and whirled his spear around, aiming for the neck but missed, the blade piercing the beast’s shoulder. It tackled him despite the injury and Ken had to push hard on his spear to keep the monster’s snapping jaws away from his face. Panic shot through him.
A long blade sank deep into the Shadow’s side, knocking it off Ken. He shot up, yanking his spear from its shoulder. Narukami pulled his sword from the Shadow before stabbing it right through again. The Shadow writhed, so Ken pulled his Evoker out and held it to his chest.
“Nemesis!” He pulled the trigger, his Persona rising into the air. “Kouha!” Light flew from his Persona and stabbed through the Shadow, effectively killing it. Ken retracted his Persona and nodded to Narukami, who threw himself back into the fray.
The Shadows around them were big and ferocious, and the whole of S.E.E.S. was struggling to fight them off, even with the aid of Narukami and Kurusu. Ken gritted his teeth and flung himself at a Shadow that was sparring with Junpei. With a shout, he stabbed the beast through the back, letting Junpei recover enough to summon Trismegestus and defeat the Shadow. Ken helped him up, and together the two charged forward to assist anyone else. A Shadow lunged for him, but two swift slashes from Kurusu were enough to stop it in its tracks. The thief pulled off his mask to summon that winged demon, Arsene. Ken watched as Kurusu attempted to kill the Shadow with Eiha, but it bounced off its shell.
“Kurusu!” A crazy idea popped into Ken’s head, and he hoped it would work as he wanted it to. “Use Eiha on my spear!” The thief didn’t protest, and dark energy wrapped around the sharp blade. “Go down!” He rushed forward, stabbing his spear through the center of the Shadow. The magic attack exploded outwards, destroying the beast. Ken planted his feet, the dark magic making him feel a little weak. Once it was done, he shook himself off, turning back to look at Kurusu, who smiled proudly at him. Ken felt warmth spread through him.
He looked around, glad to see that the other Shadows had been killed. Minato stabbed his sword down into one repeatedly, making sure it was dead. S.E.E.S. had won this fight, but it was clear it had been taxing. Ken felt pain spark across his left arm. He winced as he looked at it, seeing where a Shadow’s claws had cut his skin. His armband had avoided getting torn, but his sweater would need to be sewn later. He inspected his other pained spots, only finding bruises and scrapes. The cut would need to be treated soon.
Yukari had been going around, looking at everyone’s wounds. She came up to Ken and looked at his arm. “You’ll be ok. Here.” She carefully wrapped the wound despite Ken wincing at her touch. “There. Minato wants to keep going a little farther. He wants to know about the new area Fuuka was talking about. Do you think you can keep going?” He rolled his right arm around. His muscles would be sore tomorrow if he kept going, but he should be ok otherwise.
“I’ll be ok. If Minato wants to keep going, I can keep up.” Ken held his spear across his shoulders and walked after Minato, who had started leading the group onward. He had to jog to keep up thanks to being significantly shorter than anyone here. Eventually the hallway opened up into a wide open space where an eerily large building loomed before them.
“So this is the new area, as Fuuka had mentioned.” Minato’s gaze swept up the tower as he spoke. “As much as I want to go on, S.E.E.S. needs to rest. That last group of Shadows was hard to fight. Fuuka, can you guys tell anything about this tower?”
“It’s not too high or big, but we can tell that it has a very different feel than what you’ve been dealing with so far. You should find a way back so you can rest.” Ken looked around at the black and white walls, eventually noticing movement by the door of the building.
“Minato-”
“I see them.” Minato held up his hand to keep S.E.E.S. to show he would look by himself. Kurusu and Narukami joined him, and even from here Ken could feel the prickliness radiating from his leader. Wow, Minato doesn’t like them, but I don’t know why. Ken watched as the three approached the Shadowy figure. Even from here, the thing’s voice carried.
“Y-You’re back! He was right, you God Slayers are dangerous.” God Slayers? Is it talking about us? There was some scuffling and Ken could see that the thing was actually a person, a person with something in their arms. He wanted to step forward to help, but the voice stopped him. “Come any closer and I’ll kill her on the spot.”
“Minato! He’s not bluffing!” Fuuka’s voice was filled with desperation. Ken shook, unable to decide what to do. “That man is much stronger than you and S.E.E.S. could defeat.”
The man laughed. “If you want to beat me, come to the top of my Temple. Better do it before she dies!” He slid into the building, shutting the door behind him with a solid click. Everyone stood silently, struggling to process what just happened. Ken could see Minato’s arms shaking by his side. After a few more silent moments, Kurusu exploded.
“What the hell are you standing there for? We have to go save her!” Kurusu slammed his foot into the door, but it didn’t budge. Ken flinched at the sound, but turned to look at Minato. “Arisato, these are your people. We have to go.” He looked at the blue haired man with an accusatory glare.
“Kurusu. Look at them, they’re battered and bruised. They can’t continue on at this rate. We’ll head back and figure out what to do next, and don’t you dare try to argue with me.” Minato glared back. “S.E.E.S. needs to rest. We’ll return for now.”
“Minato?” Fuuka’s voice rose to life around them. “We’ve found another entrance to this place nearby you guys. It should be over to your right.” Ken turned in the direction that Fuuka had mentioned, and he noticed a wavering light blue square on the wall. He approached it, seeing that same strange circular symbol that was on Hanamura’s window.
“Ken, be careful. We don’t know what’s on the other side.” Mitsuru walked up behind him, gazing into the window. He thought he could almost see into it, the room beyond looking kind of like the dorms at Hashi. “Leader, will you go on through first?”
Minato walked up to the window and just glared at it before poking his head through. After a moment he came back out with a huff of relief. “Thank god, it’s Ken’s room.” Why my room? “That means we can use this window as a way to get back here to this place.”
“Didn’t that weirdo call this place a temple? Does that mean he’s part of those cultists of rumor?” Narukami had walked over, sheathing his sword on his back. He folded his arms. “What are these windows anyway? Why the windows of our rooms?”
Minato shook his head. “I’m too tired to think about it right now. Come on, we should go rest for now. Let’s meet up later in the planning room.” He leapt through the window and was gone.
“Here, Amada.” Narukami was standing behind him with a small smile. “I’ll help you through.” He knelt down and offered a boost to the child. While normally Ken would have scoffed and walked away, he felt warmth spreading through him at the gray haired boy’s kindness. It was quickly followed by a sharp pang in his chest, but he swallowed the feeling.
“Th-thank you.” He graciously took the assistance and stepped through the window and tumbled into the floor. Minato helped him up, though Ken could feel his arms shaking. They were all out of it. “Minato, are you ok?”
“I’ll be fine. It’s been a while since I’ve fought, so I’m just sore. Is your arm ok?” Minato gently brushed his fingers on the bandage. Ken felt a prick of pain from the pressure, but otherwise it was ok. He nodded. “Good.” The rest of S.E.E.S. had begun coming through the window. “Take your time resting.” With that Minato left his room.
Everyone had long since left his room, leaving Ken to relax by himself. He had been working on school work when the chime of his phone rang out through his room. He picked it up and checked it, seeing a message from Minato.
<< Ken, we’ve gotten a message from Mishima. Please come to the planning room.
Ken stacked his work together neatly before standing up. He wasn’t sure how long he had been sitting there, but his legs were stiff. He walked out anyway, as the planning room was a bit far. He’d stretch out his legs by walking. When he made it to the room, a lot of people were already there, including Narukami and Kurusu. He made his way to a seat near the front and sat down.
Once everyone else was in there, Kurusu spoke of the message. It made sense that Mishima would have texted him first, considering how close friends they were. Despite that, Ken did wonder why Kurusu only called Mishima by his honorific.
“Mishima messaged us just a few minutes earlier. He said that a girl from his class named Nishi went missing. Her friends claimed she was last seen working at the same convenience store that Hokori manages.” Kurusu’s eyes were so dark and piercing, Ken fought to keep looking at the dark haired teen. “I think it’s rather safe to assume that Hokori dragged her into that big building thing we saw in the Chaos Realm.”
“So we’ve decided to take him out, topple that wretched temple of his, and save Nishi.” Minato’s gray eyes swept over everyone in the room, though it was clear the warmth in his glare was only for S.E.E.S. Ken felt excitement shoot through his chest, spreading across his entire body. A new mission. He stared down at his hands, clenching his fingers closed. It wasn’t vengeance that was driving him this time. No.
This time I want to save people.

The Silver Scale Curse
Short Summary
Jaken remembers the details about the Silver Scale curse that Zero placed on Rin 14 years ago. At the same time, Riku appears before Setsuna, who's been attacked by demons aiming for the daughters of Sesshomaru, and exterminates them. Setsuna asks Riku what his true motive is.
Expanded Summary
The Silver Scale curse that Zero placed on Rin 14 years ago. When the cursed silver (fish) scale covers her entire body, Rin will die. After Jaken hears about a method that can delay the progression from the spirit of the Tree of Ages, he attaches the pupa of a Dream Butterfly on the nape of young Setsuna’s neck, who has been separated from Towa in the forest fire. Meanwhile, Towa and the others search for Bokusenou and are pursued by demons aiming for Sesshomaru’s daughters. Setsuna has the other two go on ahead and faces (the demons) alone, but Riku appears and eliminates the demons on his own. Setsuna asks him what his true intention is.

The NJPW official results called the winning move for the main event a “Back STF” so I guess that’s a reverse STF of some kind? Maybe? Honma got his one win for the year and it’s been downhill ever since. Yuto Nakashima’s return match went much better than his debut, going the full 10 minute time limit without any issues. Good to see he stuck through it and returned.
This week’s episode of NJPW Strong concluded the matches from the Autumn Attack taping sessions in Garland, TX.

Ishimori seems very much worth watching.
In other NJoA news, three more matches were announced for Battle In The Valley on 11/13/2021. In a battle featuring three guys who will be out of a ROH contract in December, VLNCE UNLTD (Brody King & Chris Dickinson) will take on two of the Stray Dog Army, Bateman & Misterioso. The two most recent Impact World Champions will also be in attendance, as Josh Alexander faces Yuya Uemura, whilst Juice Robinson goes against *spits* Moose.
Meanwhile, what could be the full card for Detonation, on 11/15/2021 in Riverside, CA, has been released. First, it is now official, that Fred Rosser will challenge “Filthy” Tom Lawlor for the NJPW Strong Openweight title. However, the biggest news here is that Josh Barnett wrestles his first NJPW match since 5/3/2004, when he beat Ken Shamrock by DQ in the Tokyo Dome. Barnett did work several events for Inoki Genome Federation after that over the years, and was of course the color commentator for NJPW on AXS from 2015 - 2018, before a shoot incident between himself and Jay White at G1 Special in San Francisco on 7/7/2018 saw the beginning of the end of his career with AXS. Barnett will now be the next opponent in Alex Coughlin’s challenge series.

It does appear at this time that co-promotion between Impact and AEW is done, at least for now.

Hideo Ishikawa Reprises His Role as Ryoma Nagare in Getter Robo Arc
Nine days ahead of its premiere in Japan, the official website for the forthcoming TV anime adaptation of Getter Robo Arc, the final installment of the Getter Robo Saga manga series created by Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa, announced 11 additional voice cast members, including 51-year-old Hideo Ishikawa who will reprise his role as Ryoma Nagare.
Ryoma is one of the protagonists of the original Getter Robo series, who piloted the Getter-1 (Getter Eagle), Getter Dragon, Black Getter, Shin Getter-1, and New Getter. Following Akira Kamiya, Ryoma's original voice cast in Getter Robo (1974-1975) and Getter Robo G (1975-1976), Ishikawa voiced Ryoma in Getter Robo Armageddon (1988-1989), Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo (2000-2001), and New Getter Robo (2004). It has been 17 years since he played Ryoma for the last time for an anime series (Meanwhile, he has since played Ryoma frequently for the Super Robot Wars game series).
Ishikawa says, "It's been 17 years since 'New Getter Robo,' and I was surprised to see a new story of Getter on TV in the age of Reiwa. The first Getter was in the Showa era, the three shows after 'Armageddon' were in the Heisei era, and 'Arc' is in the Reiwa era. So the world of Getter has been connected for three generations. Once again, I think it is a great series. This is the fourth time for me to play Ryoma's character voice. I want to watch over the activities of his son Takuma, who has inherited the fate of the Getter, and the passionate battles of the new Getter team, together with all the fans."

Common Japanese Surname Kanji
In conjunction with my “Creating a Japanese name for your character” post, I decided to make a list of the common kanji found in traditional Japanese surnames (as well as a couple of characters that have those kanji in their names!). If you’re looking for a kanji to fill out your character’s family name (if you only have one kanji and need another one, for example) or if you’re looking for some help or inspiration, hopefully this post will help!
井 (i) - well. Common names include Fukui and Inoue. Characters include Inui Ryō (Hound Dog).
上 (kami, gami, ue) - above/top/upper. Common names include Ueda, Tanoue, Makami, Mogami, and Kamigawa. Characters include Kaminari Denki.
岡 (oka) - hill/ridge. Common names include Matsuoka, Yoshioka, and Okamoto.
川 (kawa, gawa) - river. Common names include Ishikawa, Sakigawa, and Kawakami. Characters include Tamakawa Sansa (the cat quirk police officer) and Tsuchikawa Ryūko (Pixie-Bob).
木 (ki, gi) - tree. Common names include Suzuki, Mitsugi, and Kimura. Characters include Shigaraki Tomura, Yagi Toshinori, and Sasaki Mirai (Sir Nighteye), among others.
口 (kuchi, guchi) - mouth/entrance. Common names include Kawaguchi, Yamaguchi, Edakuchi, and Kuchiro. Characters include Kōda Kōji (using an alternate reading) and Iguchi Shūichi (Spinner).
崎 (saki, zaki) - cape/peninsula. Common names include Hamasaki, Kawasaki, Miyazaki, and Sakimoto. Characters include Shiozaki Ibara and Chisaki Kai (Overhaul), among others.
沢 or 澤 (sawa, zawa) - swamp/marsh/mountain stream. Common names include Kurosawa, Serizawa, and Sawase. Characters include Aizawa Shōta (Eraserhead), among others.
下 (shita, jita) - under/below. Common names include Matsushita and Okajita.
島 (shima, jima) - island. Common names include Mizushima, Nakajima, and Shimanose. Characters include Maijima Higar (Power Loader) and Kirishima Eijirō, among others.
田 (ta, da) - rice field. Common names include Yamada, Fujita, and Tamura. Characters include Kōda Kōji, Mineta Minoru, Īda Tenya, Yamada Hizashi (Present Mic), Shishida Jūrōta, Shōda Nirengeki, Hakamata Tsunagu (Best Jeanist), Awata Kaoruko (Bubble Girl), and Tobita Danjūrō (Gentle Criminal), among others.
藤 (tou, dou, fuji) - wisteria. Common names include Saitou, Itou, Kudou, and Fujimoto. Characters include Satō Rikidō and Kendō Itsuka, among others.
中 (naka) - inside/middle/within. Common names include Tanaka and Nakamura. Characters include Irinaka Jōi (Mimic) and Nakagame Tatami (Turtle Neck), among others.
橋 (hashi, bashi) - bridge. Common names include Takahashi and Hashimoto. Characters include Yotsubashi Chikara (Destro) and Yotsubashi Rikiya (Re-Destro).
原 (hara, bara, wara) - field. Common names include Nakahara, Fujiwara, and Harazumi. Characters include Kaibara Sen, Bubaigawara Jin (Twice), and Kamihara Shinya (Edgeshot), among others.
辺 (be) - border. Common names include Watanabe and Sasabe.
丸 (maru) - round/circle. Common names include Ichimaru, Kazemaru, and Marukame.
村 (mura) - village. Common names include Okumura, Himura, and Murakami. Characters include Shimura Tenko (Shigaraki Tomura), Shimura Nana, and the rest of the Shimura family.
本 (moto, hon) - base/origin. Common names include Miyamoto, Sakamoto, and Honda. Characters include Nemoto Shin (one of the Eight Bullets of the Shie Hassaikai).
森 (mori) - forest. Common names include Fujimori, Sugimori, and Morishita. Characters include Komori Kinoko.
林 (yashi, hayashi) - forest/woods. Common names include Kobayashi.
山 (yama) - mountain. Common names include Akiyama, Koyama, and Yamamoto. Characters include Aoyama Yūga, Ishiyama Ken (Cementoss), Kayama Nemuri (Midnight), Yamada Hizashi (Present Mic), Takeyama Yū (Mt. Lady), and Usagiyama Rumi (Mirko), among others.
A reminder just in case anyone needs it: Japanese surnames typically describe a place or the origin of the family it belongs to, for instance if a family came from a “forest origin”, their name might be Morimoto. Or someone from a “snowy village” would be Yukimura. MHA names are not quite so literal or realistic (like Usagiyama “rabbit mountain”), and are meant to be a little more fun.
Keep in mind that this is not a complete or comprehensive list, and that these are NOT all the readings for the kanji. Some of these kanji have different nanori that were not included in this list.
Also a quick note in case anyone was wondering:
When to use KAMI vs. GAMI, SAWA vs. ZAWA, etc.?
Sometimes when you put two kanji next to each other in a name, the second kanji has a different pronunciation/reading. Why? The short answer is, it’s easier to pronounce that way. So some short rules:
Putting two or more kanji together is like a compound word in English, and when you “link” those kanji together, sometimes the latter kanji sounds different (NEVER the first kanji though).
Most kana have a “voiced” (dakuten) version and some have a “half-voiced” (handakuten) version, but it’s mostly the “voiced” version that occurs in pronunciation/spelling when “linking” two kanji.
“ka” ⟶ “ga”, “ki” ⟶ “gi”, etc.
“sa” ⟶ “za” (note: “shi” ⟶ “ji”)
“ta” ⟶ “da” (note: “chi” ⟶ “ji/dji” and “tsu” ⟶ “zu/dzu”)
“ha” ⟶ “ba” or “pa” (though “pa” isn’t used for linking, it’s the “half-voiced” sound)
In the list of kanji above, the 2nd “spelling” for the kanji is the “voiced” pronunciation, for your ease!
Not every linked kanji will change its sound. It’s probably subjective to whoever came up with the family name to begin with, but basically the sounds will be voiced if the person who has the name thinks it flows better as a voiced sound.
Remember that while you might not hear a huge difference in “Ota” and “Oda” or something, there are different nuances in Japanese language that native speakers will pick up that you will not. You might not understand why some names “link” the sounds and others don’t, but to native speakers it makes sense.
In the case of MHA names though? I’d say don’t worry about it too much. Go with the flow of whatever sounds best--or whatever puns the best. (Like Mina Ashido’s surname! Typically it’s pronounced Ashito, but Ashido sounds a lot more like “acid” than Ashito does, right? :D)

Akuma no Riddle characters’ name analysis
Hi everyone! So, I was doing some researches about the AnR characters' name, especially the kanjis, for my AnR kids headcanon. I discovered some interesting stuff so I wanted to make a post about the meaning of the characters' name and kanjis.
Azuma Tokaku (東 兎角): Azuma mean east and Tokaku is written with the kanji rabbit (兎, usagi) and horn (角, tsuno). Rabbit horn is an expression in Japanese that means impossible or something that shouldn't exist. Tokaku's grandmother gave her this name because according to her, Tokaku's strength would be so terrifying that her enemies would think it's impossible. That's also why Tokaku is sometimes referred as a rabbit.
Inukai Isuke (犬飼 伊介): Inukai means "dog keeper" (犬=dog, inu, 飼=keeper). I find it funny since people often portrait Isuke as a dog because of her name, but in fact, she's not the dog but its owner (which means the dog is a certain redhead...). Really the perfect name for someone who wants to be called with the honorific sama. I don't know much about the name Isuke, other than it's a male name and it's written with the kanji for "I" (伊) and “through” (介, kai).
Kaminaga Kouko (神長 香子): Kaminaga can mean chief and is written with the kanjis god (神, kami) and length (長, naga). The latter can also be read as chief. A perfect given name for the leader of everything, which also reminds of her past in a religious orphanage. Kouko is written with the kanji for incense (香, ka) and the kanji for child (子, ko). 香子 can also be read as Kaoriko, which means child's perfume. Maybe it's a symbolic for Kouko being trained as a child to be an assassin using bomb, since incense is something that needs to be burn, but at the same time, incense isn't dangerous and is even pleasant. Maybe it's linked to Kouko's desire to not be an assassin anymore.
Kirigaya Hitsugi (桐ヶ谷 柩): So, Kirigaya is written with the kanjis tung pill (桐, kiri), months (ヶ, ke) and valley (谷, tani). I've no idea what it's supposed to mean. Maybe a reference to poison? All I care is that there's "gay" in it...I'm so mature. Anyway, apparently, Hitsugi's sole kanji, 柩, means coffee. Coffee, a drug, which means...intoxication. Her names are all about toxine! It's a conspiracy! Okay no, I really got nothing other that for her name. Oh, there's another kanji that is also read Hitsugi, 棺, which means coffin. Really suspicious…Edit: "Kirigaya" can also mean "valley of paulownias". kiri meaning the latter word and gaya meaning valley.
Kenmochi Shiena (剣持 しえな): Kenmochi means swordship and it's written with the kanji sword (剣, ken) and possession (持, ji). kinda ironic for a girl who didn't fight at all, it looks more like a name for Chitaru (even more ironic since Shiena got poisoned over her supposed crush on Chitaru, perhaps this name was chosen because of that?). About her first name, ell apparently, according to google translate, it means sorry. That just makes me laugh. I guess she's really sorry to have been poisoned by a loli yandere. Okay, more seriously, about the kanji. There's To (し), huh (え, what?), and...literally what (な). Okay. Then we should call her Swordship Sorry now. Couple of years ago I'd read that しえ means purple, but I can't find the source now. Too bad, because it's Otoya's hair colour and it made my OtoShie shipper heart go doki doki. Edit: Shiena’s name can also be written 詩絵菜, with the kanjis 詩 (shi) meaning "poetry, poem", 絵 (e) meaning "picture, painting, drawing, sketch" combined with 菜 (na) meaning "vegetables, greens". I’m not sure if it’s relevant since her name in AnR isn’t written that way, but it could be a reference to her more artistic self, especially regarding theater. Tho it’s kinda ironic if it’s the case, since her least favorite food is vegetable.
Sagae Haruki (寒河江 春紀): So, Sagae is written with the kanji cold (寒, samu), river (河, kawa) and jiang (江, kô). So...she's a cold river. Perhaps it's a reference to being free? Water does feel like freedom. Haruki can mean Spring Season Tree or Spring Century. It's written with the kanji spring (春, haru) and age (紀, nori). I guess Haruki is a sunny person? I don't really have a lot of stuff for her name, sorry.
Shuto Suzu (首藤 涼): Shuto is written with the kanji neck (首, kubi) and wisteria (藤, fuji), which is a type of flower. So wisteria neck. I guess that the neck of a flower is the stem, so Suzu's head...is a flower? Well, she does have a lot of knowledge in flowers. Then her name Suzu, it's a really interesting case. Her name's sole kanji is 涼, which means cool/fresh, and is usually read as Ryō. But in the same Suzuka, which means fresh breeze it's written with the kanji 涼, and 風 (kaze, wind). Suzu's ending song is also named Suzukaze. Maybe it’s related to Suzu rather cool personality. Usually, the same Suzu is written with the kanji 鈴, which means bell.
Takechi Otoya (武智 乙哉): Takechi is written with the kanji war (武, Take) and intellect (智, akira). So intellectual war, perhaps it’s related to her manipulative nature when it comes to kill her victim. It can also be written Takeshi. 武 is really a kanji related to military and martial, and it’s used to write the word samurai, warrior. Perhaps a reference to Otoya being an assassin, or rather, a serial killer. Otoya can also be written 二矢, which means two arrows. Far-fetched, but perhaps it’s linked to the fact her weapon, scissors, had two blades. Her actual name is written with the kanji for second part (乙, otsu), and alas (哉, kana). Not so sure what it could mean.
Namatame Chitaru (生田目 千足): Namatame is written with the kanji living (生, nama), rice field (田, ta) and eye (目, me). Kinda make me reminds how we all thought Chitaru died, but it’s revealed at the end that she survived, that she’s living. She also said that she likes rice. For the eyes, perhaps it’s related to justice? It reminds me of the idiom an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. But that idiom referred more to vengeance than justice, which goes with what I think of Chitaru’s action in the series. Rather than doing actual justice, what she did was vengeance. Chitaru’s name can mean A thousand steps, and it’s written with the kanji thousand (千, sen) and leg (足, achi). All I got for that is that steps is important in sword fighting, and with the thousand, perhaps it’s because Chitaru is really experienced swordswoman.
Hashiri Nio (走り 鳰)/Kuzunoha Nio (葛葉 鳰): Hashiri means running, and it’s written with the kanji running (走, hashi) and the hiragana ri (り). It’s a fake name Nio gave herself for Class Black, because she didn’t want Tokaku to know she was from the Kuzunoha clan, the rivals of the Azuma clan. She chose it because she will always be running for the chairwoman. Nio’s name is written with the sole kanji 鳰, which means nio. Nio is an old name for the grebes that lived in Lake Biwa. It’s a name the chairwoman gave her because Nio didn’t have a name before, she was only referred as runt (or chibi in Japanese). Apparently, it’s the name of a bird from the place Nio was born (Shiga I think). Kuzunoha is written with the kanji arrowroot (葛, Kuzu) and leaf (葉, ha). I’m kinda surprised, I was expecting her name to mean west, like Azuma means east. But arrowroot is a West Indian herbaceous plant from which a starch is prepared. So it’s somehow related to west. Interesting fact, when Haru read her classmates’ name at the beginning, she used the honorific kun for both Isuke and Nio, and later she’s surprised to see that both of them are girls, which means Nio is most likely a male name too. Haru had also use kun for Tokaku, Hitsugi, Haruki and Otoya. Funny detail, but hiragana is usually used for feminine names.
Hanabusa Sumireko (英 純恋子): Hanabusa is written with the sole kanji 英, which means Ei, English in Japanese. It can also be read as "Hanabusa" (meaning "the calyx of a flower") but it can also be read as "Hana" (meaning "flower"). Sumireko did seem to like flowers, and I think it can symbolize her elegant nature. English is often viewed as noble, so perhaps it’s also related to the choice of her name. Her name Sumireko can also be read as Junko, who’s usually written 純子 (I’m trying hard to not make a danganronpa reference). The kanji used are pure (純, jun), love (恋, koi) and child (子, ko). The pure love of a child. Kinda ironic for a girl whose childhood consisted of assassination attempts against her.
Banba Mahiru (番場 真昼)/Banba Shinya (番場 真夜): Banba can mean place and is written with the kanji for number (番, ban) and place (場, ba). Perhaps number is a reference of their two personalities in the same place (the same body?). Mahiru can means midday or broad daylight, while shinya can mean midnight or full night, a clear reference to their day and night split personality. There’s two other way to write Shinya. It’s either 深夜 (Shinya, late at night) or 真也 (Shin’ya, that mean trust, believe, real or genuine). Shinya’s name seems to be a mix of both, and perhaps this name was chosen because Shinya is the only person Mahiru trust. Interesting fact, Mahiru can be both a girl and a boy name, while Shinya is always a male name. Shinya also uses the pronoun ore, which is almost only used by boy, and is a rude way to talk. So perhaps Shinya identify as a boy (but I don’t personally think so but who knows). Interesting thing. If you remove the first letter of Mahiru, it gives Ahiru, which means duck in Japanese (アヒル). I’m not sure if it was intentional but it sure is funny, considering Banba’s liking for plastic ducks.
Ichinose Haru (一ノ瀬 晴): Ichinose is written with the kanji 一 (one, ichi), the katakana no (ノ) and the kanji age (瀬, se). It can also mean "Position of current" (ichi no se) in Japanese. Perhaps because Haru is the current queen bee to be tested? One is Tokaky’s number, but perhaps the one here is somehow as a reference as her being the target, since it’s the first number. Her name Haru usually means springs, but in her case, it’s written with the kanji for sunny (晴, hare). It’s not the same kanji as in Haruki’s name. According to Tokaku (and Shinya too?), Haru smells like the sun, which fits her same. It can also fit Haru’s bright personality.
Kaiba (カイバ): Kaiba is written with the katakana power (カ, ka), the (I think) katakana a (イ) and ba (バ). It can mean seahorse in Japanese.
Mizorogi Ataru (溝呂木 辺): Mizorogi is written with the kanjis groove (溝, mizo), ryo (呂) and wood (木, ki). It’s ironic that he as a kanji about groove (some kind of depression) in is name, since he’s pretty depressed near the end of the series. Ataru can also be written 陽, which means the sun, and is both a male and female name. Ataru’s name is written with the kanji side (辺, hen). Maybe it’s linked to his sunny personality and the fact he’s a side character.
Yuri Meichi (百合 目一): Yuri means lily, a type of flower, and those are the exact kanjis for the word yuri, referring to girl’s love manga in Japan. Kouga and Minakata must have found this really funny, since the chairwoman is behind everything and it’s a yuri manga. It’s written with the kanjis hundred (百, hyaku) and synthesis (合, gô). Meichi can mean eye and is written with the kanjis eye (目, me) and one (一 , ichi). 目 is also the first kanji for the word goal and purpose. I find it interesting that she also has the kanji ichi in her name, like Haru. The name Meichi is fitting for someone who’s an ambitious person who wants to be the best, which could fit the chairwoman, especially her current position.
Azuma Mako (東 まこ): Mako is written with the katakana up (ま, ma) and this (こ, ko). Up, maybe for up there, in heaven. Perhaps it’s a reference to the fact she’s dead and in heaven.
Azuma Karami (東 空身): Karami can mean sky. It’s written with the kanjis sky (空, sora) and body (身, mi). Again, sky can refer to heaven, referring to the fact she’s dead and in heaven, just like her sister.
Inukai Eisuke (犬飼 ��介). Eisuke can also be written 英輔. His name is written with the kanjis English (英, ei) and through (介, kai). The first kanji is the same as Hanabusa’s kanji and the same as Isuke’s last kanji. It can also be written 栄祐 and 栄助 , which means glory, honour (栄, ei) and divine intervention, protection (祐, suke) or help, aid (助, suke). Eisuke did help Isuke when she was a kid, and I guess for an assassin, he has some honour.
Irina (イリーナ): I think those are katakana, which are usually used in Japanese for foreign names. Irina does seem like she’s not or not fully Japanese because of her darker skin.
