[Note: For the screenreader-friendly version of this post on tumblr itself, click here, and for the screenreader-friendly version on my blog subdomain, click here. Please tell me if you think it's offensive to make a different post for visually-impaired people instead of just making the main post accessible. I'm also waiting for an answer to an ask that will help me make better screenreader-friendly posts, but I thought I'd post the other version right now and edit it later. Sorry if that's bad. It's here, it's here. The long awaited Chapter 7 is here.
After the MC got knocked out at the end of ch6 they awake back at the hotel, with Charlie telling them of the rescue mission to get them back. And that an old friend of Lynwood's has joined them, albeit just temporarily. Or maybe he's meant to stay? Also there's a cat.
Play it HERE
-
Updates & Changes (Version 7.0; 10/12/2024)
Added Chapter 7
Added Interlude Chapters from Charlie, Mrs. Meadow's and Lynwood's perspective (Lynwood's is atm incomplete and will be added with the ch8 update)
Updated skintone options
Added option for whether MC swears
Added options to not reveal if you're trans/under the umbrella
Added options to say if you bind/pad your chest or if you are flat-chested
Various bug and prose fixes.
Total Wordcount of this update (with code) 46725 words, bringing the overall wordcount (according to twine) to ~219000 (not counting unused/notes passages).
Can't give an average, sorry, but might very well be around 100k per playthrough now.
Note:
With this update the Choicescript version is on ice, though if there's ever a change to how CoG handles publishing (and if CS gets expanded array usage), who knows what the future holds for a more mobile and screenreader friendly version of Ballad.
For those new to the game:
Tumblr media
The West is Wild and the West is Weird. A new century is around the corner, and you are an outlaw traversing the towns and terrains of the Frontier, only to one evening get wrapped up in chasing down the means to stop a doomsday cult from bringing forth the end of days. You’ll face hustlers, grifters, gunslingers and vengeful brides as you make your way to the ghost town of Devil’s Creek to find answers, and hopefully get out of there alive.
Tumblr media
What can you play as?
Ballad allows you to set your a broad variety of factor besides gender and age, all which will have a variety of impacts on the story.
Who can you romance?
Right now there are six possible ROs, with more going to be added later:
Charlie, your best friend and partner in crime
Seán and Tommy, and odd couple of outlaws happenstance put into your little posse (they can only be romanced together)
Lynwood, a Pinkerton Agent on Seán's trail
Mrs. Meadows, widow, sharp-shooter and doctor there to make sure you'll uphold your end of the deal
Isaac, former colleague of Lynwood's picking up the trail of a cold case
Tumblr media
As this is a Weird West game, some Warnings do apply:
Death
Blood
Violence
Swearing
Alcohol
Smoking
Mindsets and Vocabulary of the late 19th century North America/Europe
Mentions/Discussions of
Sexual Violence/Abuse
Spousal/Parental Abuse
Racism, Sexism, other forms of bigotry
Miscarriage
Infertility
Murder
Animal Death/Animal abuse
Guns
Spiritism
Mediumship
Ghosts
Supernatural events
Capitalism
Pinkertons
Tumblr media
Like what you're seeing?
You can support the author on Pat or Ko.
~+~
But now, have fun with the game.
Stay safe, stay hydrated, stay weird. <3

Do you happen to have any resources regarding accessibility in ttrpg design? About design, colours, phrasing of text or anything else that could be helpful!
I spent wayyyyy too long compiling all this - but it's important, and I appreciate you asking!!
Accessibility is a subject near and dear to my heart, and I will say up front that I'm not sure universal (aka accessible to everyone) design is possible, because people's needs can vary even within the same subset of similar disabilities (such as limited vision or blindness). BUT that doesn't mean we don't try to design for and make our games available to as many people as possible. Mismatch by Kat Holmes is a great read on design for accessibility in general, as is Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez. You might also check out literally anything Alice Wong has ever done.
To start, I recommend this article on the Lenses of Accessibility.
(for reference, this article is about web/graphic design, so I'm going to try and distill the most salient points for game design)
We are going to primarily focus on a few of these lenses:
Color
Font
Images & Icons
Layout
Readability
Structure
Keyboard
More details under the cut.
Color
Why does color matter? Well, for starters, there's a lot of colorblind people out there. Contrast affects readability. Autistic people and people who suffer from occular migraines might be affected by particular vivid colors. There's lots of reasons to consider color and the work it is doing in your piece, but in general you can provide a black and white, high contrast version of your game to help users.
There are tools out there to figure out if your contrast meets certain readability standards, such as this one.
Font
Dyslexia and other visual processing issues can make font choice really important. Plus, some fonts really affect readability. Additionally, line height, justification, and size of text can affect readability.
Best practice would be to provide a plain-text version of your game (and beware of "dyslexia-friendly" fonts which may or may not actually help - sticking to a basic readability font like Arial, Tahoma, or Verdana, is safest). I like this style guide for reference.
Images & Icons
For visually-impaired people, it's important to use alt-text, descriptions, and/or captions to help screenreaders properly translate images. Tons and tons of details that could go into this, but there are better people than me to describe it.
Layout
We've talked about this a bit, but there's tons of resources for this. There was recently a great writeup about Yazeba's Bed and Breakfast in terms of layout that I highly recommend.
Readability
More of the thing we've already talked about - it really is a combination of all the other lenses that comes down to readability. Audio versions of your game are always a good way to avoid the restrictions of screen readers, but can be expensive to produce.
Structure
This is tables. Tables are a nightmare for screenreaders, but including them as images can also be a problem. The short solution is "don't use tables" but that's not necessarily great for seeing people. The section in this blog is really great when talking about options for structure.
Keyboard
Debated on whether to include this, but given how many games are being read as purely digital files, I think it's important to have workable interactive elements that can be navigated through without a mouse. Some of that is going to come down to the programs being used to open your files. But if there are things you can do on your end (such as labeling form fillable fields on an interactive character sheet), they're worth doing!
Please understand that this isn't an exhaustive list. There's tons of resources out there and technology and standards are constantly changing.
It's also is important to note that even doing one of these things is helpful. You might look at this list and go "wow that's too hard" but I promise you, it's worth it. My games do not all have accessible versions! That's something I'm trying to rectify. The biggest part of that for me is thinking about accessibility from the start instead of at the end! But we can start today, and that's better than not starting.
The most important thing to remember are that disabled people are NOT a monolith - needs will differ from person to person. Accessible design makes gaming better for everyone!

🌟 New
We are continuing to roll the polls feature out to more folks! We’ve been going slowly with this one out of an abundance of caution and fixing bugs before we gave more people access to it. If you don’t have polls yet, you will soon!
The “new” indicator next to the TumblrMart icon on web has been replaced with little sparkles. Also, it’ll go away once you’ve accessed TumblrMart.
Some folks will start seeing a “Today” tab on the Explore page, which will feature stuff that’s happening on Tumblr in real time.
On web, the buttons that appear on an image you’ve added to a post now have labels to make the post editor more screenreader-friendly.
🛠 Fixed
Fixed an issue on mobile web where the “Summon crab” button could appear over other buttons. It now disappears after 5 seconds.
Version 28.0 of both the iOS and Android apps contains a fix that improves the colors used in polls in certain color palettes.
🚧 Ongoing
This is your biweekly reminder to keep reporting any spam you see. We’ve seen a few folks asking about what we’re doing on our end, and while we’re not going to get too detailed about it here, we will say that we’re using something similar to Akismet (another Automattic product!) to squash these bots.
🌱 Upcoming
Nothing to share today.
Experiencing an issue? File a Support Request and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can!
Want to share your feedback about something? Check out our Work in Progress blog and start a discussion with the community.

Moondown — A Rain World Short Story
A very experimental (and short, as a result) piece about Moon. There’s two versions under the cut; the first is what I intended for this, in its rawest, most brazen form. It also happens to be probably completely incomprehensible to screenreader users. You’re not supposed to be able to read it easily, but the effect is lost on screenreaders, so there is a second version after a line breaker that is hopefully a little bit more friendly to any blind/low vision folks stumbling across this post.
Edit as of Dec 13th: The order of the two have been switched. The more readable version is first, and the more glitched version is second. The glitched version has also been edited to be more accessible. If you are a screenreader user, please feel free to let me know if there’s anything else I can tweak to make the experience less tedious. This is intentionally supposed to be unpleasant and confusing to read, but I don’t want to make it so much so that it saps all enjoyment out of the experience.
I just was thinking about this specific moment and this is... super rough, but honestly I don’t really know how much more I can work on this without just stressing over a single letter, and I don’t care enough for that. It’s experimental anyhow. I hope the idea gets across either way.
This is a counterpart to Casting pebbles toward the sun, spectating their fall.
Content warning for unreality, acute distress from the narrator, marked text warping to represent this, and implied death. Contains lore spoilers for Rain World; read at your own discretion.

I'm back!
Tl,dr: I'm changing my tagging system, so change your blacklist accordingly.
Hi everyone!! I missed you guys. 💚💚 How's everyone been? I've opened up my ask box again so feel free to say hi!
Housekeeping notes:
I'll be changing up my blog's tagging system a little, so you might need to block some more tags to make sure you're only seeing the content you want to see.
Accessibility: I do image descriptions on pictures to make them accessible for screenreaders and anyone else who might need them. Here's a post on what they are and why they're important. I've been tagging my own IDs, whether for my image or a reblog on someone else's, with #image described. If the ID isn't mine, it's tagged as #has id.
If, for whatever reason, I can't ID an image, I'll tag it as #no id. If you use a screenreader, you might want to block it. This is also the tag I've been using for other universally screenreader-unfriendly posts (eg emojipastas), but I'm going to start using #screenreaders don't look, so if you need to, please block that tag as well.
I'm also aware that some screenreaders will support certain languages, but not others. For example, my laptop's screenreader will read Chinese or Japanese characters as "unidentified ideograph! unidentified ideograph!" extremely loudly and it's very annoying. And some screenreaders support Chinese characters but won't read Arabic. Et cetera. To get around this, I'll be tagging with with #[language] characters for the individual languages. For example, #chinese characters on posts that contain Chinese characters. No need to block every language in existence--these are the ones that might show up on my blog:
#chinese characters for posts on Xing and/or me being a Chinese person unable to shut up about cool culture things
#japanese characters because that's FMA's original language
#arabic letters, possibly, for worldbuilding-related things
#hebrew letters, also possibly for worldbuilding
If one of those is a language your screenreader doesn't support, block it!
Additionally, I'll get around to changing my blog theme at some point. It's been the default theme since I made this in December 😂 If anyone knows of simple, dark themes that are accessible (like a dyslexic-friendly font, screenreader-friendly layout, etc) please let me know!
Content warnings: I used to tag my posts as "#[content] tw" (To stand for "trigger warning." For example, "#death tw" on a post about death). I'll be changing that to "#[content] cw" which stands for "content warning" - I feel like "content warning" better represents all the reasons someone might have a certain tag filtered. So if there's content you want to avoid, please make sure you have the the tag blacklisted with "cw"! If there's something specific you want me to tag, shoot me an ask and I'll make sure it's always tagged.
Temporary intro (since this'll be my pinned post for a bit)
Hi!! I'm Aure (she/her) and I'm obsessed with FMA. I especially love analyzing the homunculi or fleshing out Xingese culture, and I will LOVE you if you ask me about my homunculi headcanons or my Xingese Roy headcanons. I am in the Chinese diaspora and have adhd, so Roy's my favorite character to project on, lol.
I write metas and headcanon posts sometimes. I also write image descriptions, and it is my mission to get the FMA fandom to make their stuff accessible ❤️ So I reblog and ID art to both hype up cool creators and help them make it accessible. If I've gotten something wrong in an ID of your work, send me an ask and I'll fix it.
(I also should mention. since a lot of y'all said you followed me for the memes. that. the memes exist hehe)
I'm aureshadow on AO3.

Envy used to have debates like that with Lust.
An absurd picture popped into Envy’s head of having a pseudo-angry conversation like that with someone who wasn’t a sibling. A human. Having someone look at them like that couple looked at each other. Something in their chest contracted.
“Pride’s really driving me crazy now, huh,” they muttered. “Imagine me, Envy, stooping down to the level of those worms.” Their eyes watered a little - they hadn’t slept too much. ~~~ Mrs. Bradley wants her son to make friends, and Pride enlists Envy to be a fake friend. Envy isn’t good at acting - not like Pride is. Not like Lust was. But they’ll try their best, and they’ll make Father happy. If it’s unpleasant, they’ll use memories of inflicting horrors of humans to cheer themself up. An exploration of Envy’s relationship with Pride, grief over Lust, and resentment towards humans for the unconditional love that Envy never had.

What has Anders been hiding from? Why does he keep coming home late? Who forgets about their boyfriend?
It's our anniversary, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't know.
Fair, I guess. I don't even know the actual date we got together. We just sort of... fell in together. One minute it was semi-anonymous sex at a club and flirting over champagne and then it was seeing each other outside of the club and sneaking off into dark corners of the library for a shag... and then there was that awful cocktail party where we discovered we traveled in the same circles... and then we realized we'd been dating a while and we talked about sharing an apartment and I was suddenly on a first name basis with his cat.

Note: This fic has a ton of coding in a work skin. I tried to pick screenreader friendly codes, but I’m not sure if I managed to do it in every case. If your device can’t handle work skins, you don’t like them, or you want all all text version, I’ve posted a screenreader friendly version, as well!

writing blind characters: some common considerations
Hey if you're gonna write Daredevil fic or any fic about a blind character really please do some basic goddamn research. Here is a helpful list of starting links and considerations! You don't even have to type words into google!!
Note: This isn't aimed at anybody in particular. There are things the comics, the show, or fic, get write and other things they get wrong and they're not all the same so this is just a generalized list of the most common areas where misconceptions seem to happen. This can also be generalized and used for any other blind character in the 2010s in North America.
Phones and computers While someone who is blind might use the voice-to-text feature like Ok google or Siri for convenience sake, the primary way of interacting with a smartphone is by using a screenreader. They come built in to iPhone and Android products and have for like, the last ten years (Android was a little slower on the uptake, whatever). You touch the screen, it reads out what is under your finger. If you double-tap it, it activates it. You type by sliding your finger across the keyboard and lifting it up when you're on the letter you want. All of this is applicable to tablets as well. Windows and Mac computers! also using screenreaders! Mac's in built in, windows has a built in one but it's shitty. There's an expensive option for Windows and a by-donation option, both of which work well. There's even a screenreader for Linux, though it works better on certain distros than others. You do your navigating with the keyboard (and no, you don’t need a special braille one) unless you suspect there's something on the screen that can only be accessed by the mouse, but using the mouse isn't super responsive and it's not intuitive for people who have been using computers for a while. Apparently Macbooks have a track pad that we should all bow down and praise, I have no clue. Note that if you have any goddamn respect for your own privacy and not irritating other people, your phone will not blare out incoming text messages. Call display in Android has been fucking broken for actual years but as far as i know it does work in iPhone.
Here are a couple demo videos, but there's plenty more out there. Talkback for Android https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJSWYLZD8EI JAWS for Windows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_ATY9gimOM (this guy has key echo turned on and I don't know how he hasn't thrown his computer out the window yet)
Braille displays and braille printers So the biggest fucking mystery about Daredevil is how he could afford a braille display as a starving lawyer haunted by student debt, but sure ok we'll go with it. There are a variety of braille displays out there! You can hook them up to your phone or computer via bluetooth or usb, and it will display the contents of the screen line by line on the display. Most displays will also let you input text and commands in braille. Note that as of this writing, you need to have a screenreader running on your computer/phone to use a braille display. I'm not sure what display Matt uses in the show, but here's the wikipedia article in case you want to learn more: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refreshable_braille_display
As for braille printing, yet again, I'm just going to tell myself he managed to find one cheap second hand or paid for it with a small business grant or something. And while ymmv in terms of how much hard copy braille material you want to use, chances are it's not going to be a lot. Braille paper is extra thick and braille is bigger than print, so documents that might only be one print page could be two or three braille pages. One of the Harry Potter books was ten volumes. I think my high school biology textbook was twenty volumes. It came in three massive cardboard boxes. I have no idea how big my university textbooks would have been, or if they even exist, because i did all of that with ebooks or scanned versions. So I guess what I'm saying is yes, there can absolutely be times when preference or necessity means somebody's using actual braille printed on an actual braille printer, but chances are pretty low it's going to be all the time or even often.
Mobility! As a friend of mine once said, Matthew stop abandoning your canes everywhere, that's forty bucks down the drain every time and also not really subtle. Not a lot here besides like, the normal term for it is cane. White cane if you need to differentiate it from a walking cane (though fuck it they can be whatever colour you want). Stick if you don't know what you're talking about or your a blind person trying to like... use ironic humour or something i don't know; some people have done it. As for guide dogs? They do not just appear magically from the friendly guide dog fairy. you cannot give them as a gift. They do not know where the shopping mall is or what bus to get on or when to cross the street. Getting a dog is a long, complex, and careful process that requires a big time and effort commitment. There are a variety of different guide dog schools out there, but if they're promising to ship you a fully trained dog if you just send your credit card information kthx you're in for an unfortunate surprise. Finally, a dog is not leveling up from a cane. They are two different mobility aids, both with different pros and cons. You don't graduate from cane to dog. If you want you can switch from one to the other, which can depend on lots of things like the environment you live in, the sorts of things you do, your own health, your family and other pets, etc.
Anyway ok I'm done and if you have questions, fuck it, my ask box is open

beat a dark room again and then looked at the dev notes for the mobile version. apparently something they spent a lot of time on was making the game screenreader friendly. since it's advertised as being text-based a lot of blind gamers were interested but it kind of stops being text-based at the dusty road segment. so they had to rework that so it was navigable by people with screenreaders. also if you use a screenreader your hull defense is 2x an average player so you can get through the liftoff segment without navigating out of the way of impacts lmao
the lore is that "wanderer" is the name of the species the player character belongs to and the initial ending idea was that once you successfully lift off you rejoin the wanderer fleet and go off to fuck up another planet. I kinda like that they changed that and it's more ambiguous what you'll do after leaving the planet. although in the mobile version they added a line that implies the wanderer will seek out the builder again which is interesting. still pretty ambiguous
in the mobile version there's also a line making it textual that the wanderer has enslaved the villagers which is really sad :( like how fucked up must this world be if people are willingly coming to live with one of the wanderers who destroyed the planet thinking it'll at least be better than scavenging in ruins and then they can't leave

Screenreader (hopefully) friendly version of “Drunk or Gotenks”
NB there are emojis in the images, I’ve not used their official names in the transcription but their meaning in context. I’ve also preserved the intentional typos and lack of punctuation/word truncations to keep the participants “styles”. If any of that massively impacts your understanding please let me know and I can fix it up. Thanks :)

Comic panels start: A desk with exercise books, pen and postit notes. Two phones are visible, one in a hand that has Goten’s view of the chat and the other on a book with Trunks’ view. The arm holding the phone has a black cuff. A face, smirking, amused The hand writing on a postit note. A wall covered in postit notes in two different handwriting styles containing study notes, covering physics, maths, and business. There’s some back and forth and doodles on the notes, the two writers have been going over them a lot. The same hand fixing the postit note written above on top of the notes. It says “See? Please?” Finally, we pan out and see a student room (the walls and curtains that cool magnolia shade in every student rental ever, the wheeled chair that common itchy blue fabric). We see Gotenks sitting at that desk, now returning to his task of studying the exercise books intently, the phones away from him on the corner of the desk.

The 3 Most Important Web Languages to Learn
I have often been asked which web languages someone with no prior experience in coding, scripting, or programming should learn, and in what order. So I'll start by giving the three most important web languages in use today, and then go on and introduce other languages that would be helpful to know once you have the basics down.
 1. (X)HTML. HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is the primary markup language of the web, and is used to build and structure web pages. Everything you see that is not styling or animation is primarily built using HTML. I'm referring here specifically to text, tables, and forms.
There are several forms HTML can commonly take: HTML 4.01 Strict or Transitional, XHTML 1.0 Strict or Transitional, and HTML 5. XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) is really just the union of HTML and XML, and is very similar in its markup to HTML, but is designed with XML's extensibility (and strictness) in mind. As a small example, while an HTML 4.01 image or break tag would not need a trailing slash, an XHTML image or break tag would need a space and trailing slash before the tag is closed. This is because in XHTML, every tag that is opened must be closed, even if it is an empty tag.Visit https://www.manzoorthetrainer.com/
The difference between using Transitional or Strict for both HTML and XHTML depends largely on how well you write your code. If it is written using strict rules (and no legacy HTML from the olden days) and validates under this configuration, then it can be Strict, and will be more compliant and standardized. Otherwise, if it's imperfect or contains some legacy HTML, it would be Transitional, so it can still be validated and the browser can know how to handle it.
At some point in the evolution of these web markup languages, there was a question of what form the future would take: XHTML 2.0 or HTML5. HTML5 was being developed by individuals from Apple, Opera, and Mozilla, while XHTML 2.0 was being developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Somewhere along the way, HTML5 won out on being the next standard for the web. Today, HTML5 is not yet fully compliant (not until about 2014), but it is where the web is heading.
So with all these choices for HTML, what should you choose to learn first? I would suggest learning either (or both) HTML 4.01 or XHTML 1.0 first, and then go on to HTML5 if you want all the exciting new features it has. Be warned, however, that HTML5 is not fully compliant, and older browsers, especially Internet Explorer, don't like it.
 2. CSS. CSS (cascading style sheet) is a style sheet language that gives an HTML document good looks. It defines the presentation of a web page. When we refer to CSS, we're referring to colors, background images, text fonts and sizes, and element positioning and size. Well-written web pages use HTML for structure and content only, and CSS for presentation. It allows different stylesheets to be used on the same web page for different reasons: accessibility (screenreaders), mobile devices, print media, and many other reasons. One web page can look very different depending on which stylesheet is used. Have a look at CSS Zen Garden to see this aspect of CSS in action; the HTML remains the same but the design changes depending on the stylesheet selected.
Learn html5
Like HTML, there are a couple of different forms (called levels) CSS can take: CSS2 (and 2.1) and CSS3. Both are very similar at the core, but CSS3 goes hand-in-hand with HTML5. Thus, though it has some great new features (like rounded corners, gradients, and shadows), some of these features are not fully compliant. Therefore, choosing what to learn in CSS is less about choosing a level and more about choosing rules and properties that are compliant to the browsers of your target audience, and Internet Explorer or older browsers are usually a large part of that audience.
 3. And now we get to #3, where I must ask you why you want to learn these web languages. The third web language to learn depends on whether you want to build dynamic web pages and web applications (and become a web developer) or whether you want to design web sites (and become a web designer). Whichever path you choose, you'll need HTML and CSS. If you wish to be a designer, and put web development on the back burner for now, I would suggest moving on to JavaScript/jQuery. But if you wish to develop dynamic sites, I would suggest going on to PHP and catching up with JavaScript/jQuery later; just know that if you go the PHP route, you will probably want to get around to JavaScript/JQuery at some point. So on to #3.
3a. JavaScript/jQuery. JavaScript is a client-side scripting language that allows animations and user interaction with the web page. Think gallery slideshows, form validation, annoying popups, tabs, tooltips, etc. You need HTML and CSS for all this, of course, but JavaScript gives it life.
JQuery, on the other hand, is not a language, but rather a JavaScript library. It's simply a way to simplify client-side scripting. What would take JavaScript lines and lines of code,jQuery does in a few lines of code. Their motto, "Write Less, Do More", is very true. Depending on how much you want to do or how thoroughly you want to understand JavaScript, you could easily learn just jQuery and forget all about JavaScript. There are also many tools and plugins for jQuery that simplifies the process even more, and makes learning a whole new language a less daunting experience.
3b. PHP/MySQL. When you get into PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, originally stood for Personal Home Page), you're no longer writing client-side code; you are now writing server-side code. PHP is a server-side scripting language that allows a user to no longer just interact with the web page, but now allows him or her to interact with the server. Coupled with MySQL, PHP allows communication with a database, where records can be created, stored, and retrieved. PHP is embedded in documents with a.php extension, but is used within HTML. So even though a file may have a.php extension, it could still work like an HTML page without PHP, or it could be used as an HTML page with embedded PHP.
Like HTML and CSS, there are different versions of PHP. Which version you choose to use depends mostly on which version the server supports. PHP5 is currently the best version, though some code that was allowed in older versions is not allowed in PHP4 or PHP5, though it's just as well since most of these codes were security weaknesses.
There are also a couple of different ways of programming PHP: OOP (object-oriented programming) and procedural. OOP programming (introduced in PHP3 and improved in PHP4 and further changed in PHP5) borrows object-oriented methods used by other programming languages (like Java, Perl, and C++) and uses them in PHP, and helps to cut down on the amount of code used (by making code reusable). Procedural programming is mostly old-school since it is less efficient, but it may be a little easier for beginners to understand.
And what's next? If you took the route of JavaScript/jQuery, the next language to learn would be PHP; and if you took the route of PHP, the next language to learn would be JavaScript/jQuery. After you have all of these languages under your belt, then it would be time to fuse JavaScript/jQuery and PHP with AJAX (Asynchonous JavaScript and XML). AJAX is not a language, but rather a set of technologies or methods that use JavaScript to interact with PHP, allowing a user to interact with a web server without using page reloads. AJAX is used in searching (such as when a list of suggestions appear when you're typing), forms (again, suggestions, or checking with the server if a username is taken, or populating a dropdown list depending on previous user choices), and many other applications. It's simply a really cool way to bring all of these languages together to create a dynamic, user-friendly application.
So those are my suggestions as to which web languages to learn when starting out, and in which order. It may seem like a lot, and for some people it may seem like too much, but I have found that learning a web language is just like learning a foreign language. Fluency comes with practice and usage, and the more languages you know, the easier it is to learn another one.
