https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/02/06/taylor-swift-jet-tracking-legal-threat/
By Drew Harwell
Taylor Swift’s attorneys have threatened legal action against a Florida college student who runs social media accounts tracking the flights of her and other celebrities’ private jets.
Jack Sweeney, a junior at the University of Central Florida, has for years run accounts that log the takeoffs and landings of planes and helicopters owned by hundreds of billionaires, politicians, Russian oligarchs and other public figures, along with estimates of their planet-warming emissions. The accounts use publicly available data from the Federal Aviation Administration and volunteer hobbyists who can track the aircraft via the signals they broadcast.
Sweeney’s accounts fueled a free-speech debate in late 2022 when X, formerly Twitter, banned Sweeney for sharing what the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, said were his “assassination coordinates.” The accounts don’t say who travels on the aircraft or where they go once the planes land.
In December, Swift’s attorney at the Washington law firm Venable wrote Sweeney a cease-and-desist letter saying Swift would “have no choice but to pursue any and all legal remedies” if he did not stop his “stalking and harassing behavior.”
Sweeney’s accounts had caused Swift and her family “direct and irreparable harm, as well as emotional and physical distress,” and had heightened her “constant state of fear for her personal safety,” the lawyer, Katie Wright Morrone, wrote, according to a copy of the letter sent to the home of Sweeney’s parents. Sweeney shared the letter with The Washington Post.
“While this may be a game to you, or an avenue that you hope will earn you wealth or fame, it is a life-or-death matter for our Client,” Morrone wrote. She added that there is “no legitimate interest in or public need for this information, other than to stalk, harass, and exert dominion and control.”
The pop star has routinely faced stalkers showing up outside her homes, Morrone wrote, and one man now faces stalking and harassment charges after being arrested last month outside her townhouse in Manhattan.
Asked whether Swift’s representatives knew of any evidence that stalkers had used the jet-tracking accounts, Tree Paine, a spokeswoman for Swift, said, “We cannot comment on any ongoing police investigation but can confirm the timing of stalkers suggests a connection. His posts tell you exactly when and where she would be.”
Sweeney, 21, told The Post he saw the letter as an attempt to scare him away from sharing public data. The accounts offer only an incomplete sketch of which cities Swift might currently be in, similar to the public schedules for her concerts or any NFL games she might attend, he said. And the letters, he added, were sent to him at a time when she faced criticism over her flights’ environmental impact.
“This information is already out there,” he said. “Her team thinks they can control the world.”
Private-jet flights are routinely criticized for their “disproportionately high” impact on climate change, and Sweeney’s accounts have often been used to name and shame their most famous passengers. In 2022, the accounts were cited in an analysis that estimated Swift was the “biggest celebrity [carbon dioxide] polluter” of the year.
Her publicist told The Post then that the analysis was flawed because her jet was often loaned out to other people. Paine told The Post on Monday that Swift bought more than double the “carbon credits” needed to offset her travel before her recent tour kicked off.
Around the time of the December letter, Facebook and Instagram disabled the accounts Sweeney had created to track Swift’s air travel, saying they broke the platforms’ privacy rules, he said. He began posting those updates onto accounts on Facebook and Instagram that he uses to log the travel of planes used by a range of stars, called Celeb Jets. Then, last month, Morrone sent a second letter saying his posts about Swift’s aircraft constituted “harassing conduct.”
The letters included the names of three other Venable attorneys experienced in litigation, including one who says on LinkedIn that she is the founding member of the firm’s “Digital Crisis Planning & Response client solution” and helps “high-profile individuals” manage crises of varying magnitude, such as “celebrity disgrace events.”
Morrone did not respond to requests for comment. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, also did not respond.
Planes in the sky regularly broadcast their locations via transponders so air traffic controllers and other pilots can see where they’re going. Anyone on the ground can pick up those signals using a cheap device, known as an ADS-B receiver, that is widely sold online.
The FAA allows plane owners to request their flights be hidden in the federal data that undergirds popular consumer flight-tracking websites, such as FlightAware. Swift’s jet appears to be blocked through such a request.
But many aviation hobbyists feed their raw data into independent websites, such as ADS-B Exchange, that those FAA requests do not cover. Criminal investigators, journalists and researchers have used those sites to look up historical flight paths or see who’s flying overhead.
Swift, Time magazine’s 2023 “person of the year,” made history Sunday as the only musician to win four best-album Grammy Awards, and her every movement is closely watched by paparazzi and superfans. Her “Eras Tour” last year was credited with boosting the local economies of every city she stopped in; one study cited by The Post estimated that “Swifties” spent about $93 million per show.
Her travel plans have drawn increased attention in recent weeks as she’s flown to watch her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, play for the Kansas City Chiefs, including from conservatives who have seized on the trips to criticize her.
They have also become a key point of interest for her fans, especially because her upcoming concert in Tokyo is just hours before Kelce’s scheduled Super Bowl appearance on Sunday in Las Vegas. Even Japan’s embassy in Washington recognized the public’s interest, posting on X last week, “Despite the 12-hour flight and 17-hour time difference, the Embassy can confidently Speak Now to say that
she should comfortably arrive” on time.
Sweeney’s accounts have in recent months tracked two jets that were owned by Nashville-based companies and registered to be operated by a Swift company called Firefly Entertainment, according to FAA documents. They do not track who travels on the planes or any other chartered flights.
Swift’s spokeswoman told The Post that “there is only one plane.” One of the planes previously tracked by Sweeney’s accounts, a Dassault Falcon 900, was marked in FAA records last week as being transferred to a real estate company. Each jet sells for about $25 million, according to brokerage estimates cited last month by The Post.
After X banned him and his accounts in December 2022, Sweeney opened new Facebook and Instagram accounts for Swift, former president Donald Trump, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, reality star Kim Kardashian and Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg, among others. All of those accounts except for Swift’s remain online — including the accounts for Zuckerberg, who runs both sites. (Bezos owns The Washington Post.)
Sweeney continues to post Swift jet updates to other platforms, including Bluesky, Mastodon and Telegram. To abide by X’s rule against real-time location tracking, he also created accounts that post Musk and Swift’s flight updates with a 24-hour delay.
The December letter from Swift’s attorney states that Sweeney’s actions are “in violation of several state laws” but does not specify them. The letter does, however, cite nine anonymous Instagram comments saying the account is “scary,” “pathetic,” “weird,” invasive” and “dangerous” “stalker behavior.”
The letter says Sweeney is “notorious for disregarding the personal safety of others in exchange for public attention and/or requests for financial gain” and cites a message he sent to Musk in 2021, during which he countered Musk’s $5,000 offer to delete the Musk-jet account with a suggestion of $50,000, as first reported by the now-defunct tech blog Protocol. Sweeney said no money was ever exchanged.
After receiving the letters, Sweeney said he asked for help from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights group, which sent his request to a list of attorneys. James Slater, a Florida lawyer who specializes in First Amendment and internet speech issues, responded on Sweeney’s behalf to the Venable letter.
Slater wrote that Morrone had not identified any legal claim, that the jet information posed “no threat” to Swift’s safety, and that Sweeney’s account had “engaged in protected speech that does not violate any of Ms. Swift’s legal rights,” according to a copy reviewed by The Post. Slater said he has yet to receive a response.
In an interview, Slater said he thought the Swift attorney’s letters were “hyperbolic and unfounded” and sent in hopes that Sweeney would “just delete everything and do what they said.”
“This isn’t about putting a GPS tracker on someone and invading their privacy. It’s using public information to track the jet of a public figure,” he said. “This is their means to try to quash a PR issue and bully my client to have the bad coverage die down.”

TW: Miscarriage
.
Last Tuesday we went to the hospital and everything was okay. I just had spotting and the nurses and doctors told me to take it easy. Did that and much more. I slept, and ate til I couldn’t anymore.
Come Friday the blood becomes a little more red like a menstrual cycle with clots. So my husband took me to the women’s urgent care center. “They did not want to perform any tests because they just did them Tuesday, they felt like it wouldn’t have made sense to do anymore tests plus— things could always change tomorrow.”
It’s Wednesday

I go back today because the cramps I had been having had jumped from a 2 to a 7. Felt like regular menstrual cramping with more blood clots than before. I go in, they run some tests and turns out there has been no heart beat for the baby and thus, no growth.
It’s a lot to process
my husband and I are heartbroken and devastated by this tragedy and
we had to explain to our eldest daughter that there will be no baby this year. That was probably the hardest.
I just please ask you send our family your prayers, condolences— they’ll be greatly appreciated.
🌈 Aya/Adonis Harwell, We love you baby. Wait for us.

I'm not going to link or screenshot every single article pertaining to Steve Harwell being a Covid denier, but he was. I remember at the height of Covid reading articles & seeing amateur concert footage about him spitting into crowds, having the audience cough & spit on each other & making fun of Covid & those taking it seriously. He PURPOSELY held concerts & teasingly called them 'super-spreader events', which they were. A couple of concerts which were ticketed - he allowed outsiders inside to fully pack them 'as a Covid joke about the 6ft rule'. He got into Twitter spats with other bands calling him an asshole & monster over it. A certain group of people on Tumblr are going to remember him as some nostalgic saint, mostly because of Shrek. He was part of the soundtrack of my childhood too. But he was an unforgivable ASSHOLE. He helped to spread a disease, he LAUGHED at people fighting for their lives & dying calling it fake, his actions helped to destroy families & orphan children as well as kill them. You can try to blame the fans who attended the concerts, but they wouldn't have fucking been there if he didn't hold open the gate inviting them in. There are other bands who have done similar at the beginning of Covid, but we're talking about Steve Super-Spreader Harwell right now.

@headstrongblake asked: how do they feel about marriage? do they ever want to get married? what do they feel about valentine’s day? / all kids who want
how do they feel about marriage? & do they want to get married?
grant ward - for most of his life, marriage never even seemed like an option to grant, he would see couples married and never think that he would be someone lucky enough to be allowed connection at all, let alone have a normal enough life to marry them. though his parents marriage for the most part was for show, if some how, some way grant was ever able to have a partner and not have any obstacles interfering, he would like to marry his partner. he would prefer to be the one to propose because if him and his partner made it this far, it would show his ultimate commitment to this person. underneath the mask of appearing like he might not care for it, is a deep yearning to have a more normal life with a partner and family
kassy harwell - for most of her life kassy viewed marriage in a very distasteful way when she thought of how it originated, which was for a man to claim and own a woman. now older, she still has no interest in marriage because she has no overall real interest in being committed to anyone in general. she sees it through a less misogynistic lens now (for the most part) and would be happy for those who do wish it. overall, she's not completely against it and for specific cases or legal reasons or if it would just be easier, i could see herself getting married but it would be more of something she should do and not necessarily something she has deeply dreamed of. if she was to ever get married she would keep her last name because there is still that inherent feeling of control over her otherwise. she also really would not want who she is to be erased, she wants to be known for her name and profession, not (insert partner)'s wife instead
nathan bishop - nate had never really had a family in the typical sense and never knew his parents. i think part of never experiencing having a family has definitely influenced his desire to have one of his own. though nate can appear like a bit of a playboy he is really only a one person commitment kind of guy and when he finds that person he would love to marry them. the only negative thoughts i could see him having about marriage is how expensive weddings are and how he couldn't provide enough to make it the most special occasion for his partner. he absolutely adores the thought of being able to call her his wife and not in an overly possessive way but in admiration and though she is the most precious and beloved person in the world to him
alec cross - he has always dreamt of having a happy ever after and that includes getting married, he think's its magical and truly so special for two people to show their ultimate commitment. he loved everything about it to the engagement party, to invitations and decorating and planning, the FLOWERS, the written vows, how everyone has come together to cherrish this happy moment. he definitely would love to get married, but there is the small problem that he is polyamorous therefore it worries him because if there is a potential for more partners they can't all get married because of the law
rev everheart - they really have no interest in marriage, they can be committed to someone without that and it just seems like such an unnecessary hassle to them. they're not 100% against getting married and if their partner would want that then they would too but rev would be a little resistant when it came to the wedding itself, which was probably the biggest deterrent to them. they would wear a suit at their wedding and be the one to wait for their partner, not be walked down
trinity lambert - she doesn't really know how she feels about marriage. being a closeted bi girl at an all girls school where all her relationships had to be hidden and private she never really thought she would be able to share her partner openly with the world and not have to worry let alone thinking they could get married. she wasn't someone who grew up dreaming of it but she is a bit of a hopeless romantic and if marriage would be the next step and her partner asked her she would be over the moon
hunter everheart - as much of a loner as he may appear, and as though nothing seems to phase him, good or bad, when hunter does find a partner who he cares deeply for he would absolutely wish to show his commitment and love to them by proposing. a lot of his life, hunter never thought he would have the chance to grow close with someone because of what his father had put him through and until that is dealt with i think he would still be hesitant however, i think in the end that longing would win against his caution (which could possibly be to their detriment) but hunter would love to have a family of his own, and marriage would be one step towards having that
how do they feel about valentines day?
grant ward - he has never celebrated it or really thought about it before. i wouldn't say he's overly invested in the holiday -- not until he has a stable relationship, then i can see him trying to do a fairly grand gesture for it (depending on if his partner cares much about the holiday) because i do think grant definitely is a bit of a romantic at heart
kassy harwell - she doesn't really care about this holiday either and a lot of the time she would only go out of her way to make it somewhat special would be for alec. she lowkey thinks the holiday is unnecessary and if someone cares about their partner they shouldn't have to wait for a specific day to go all out and spoil someone, however she's all for the 'galentines day' get togethers. she also doesn't mind the chocolate and reason to go buy herself a new pair of lingerie, or to plan a fun session/evening with a person of her choice
nathan bishop - honestly the more i answer these kinds of questions the more i realize what a big softie romantic nathan is because he absolutely would love to spoil his partner for valentines day, however the only problem would be that he wouldn't be able to fully make the day as special as he wanted due to his limitations with how much money he has
alec cross - he absolutely LOVES valentines day. everything about it from the colour scheme, decorations, to the grand gestures of love, and gifts and professions of love, being able to go on a cute and romantic date. he loves both being spoiled and spoiling his date, and going out for dinner and all the restaurants are filled with (hopefully) happy couples who are all in love. but he also uses this holiday to appreciate all his friends as well and would love to be included in 'galentines day' etc
rev everheart - they hate this holiday and think its gross and stupid, and that it shouldn't give people a pass to show their affection so publically and in everyones face. if they were asked out for a valentines day date they would still go (depending on who asked) but probably be a little grumpy and uncomfortable depending, plus they wouldn't want any pda or touching themselves
trinity lambert - she doesn't really have an opinion on the holiday, when she was younger, she only liked it because it gave her an excuse to send anonymous love letters to her crush without people knowing who it was from or thinking anything of it. she does really like dressing up for the day and whether she has a date or not would dress and do her make up in theme for valentines day

The world of rock music has lost one of its brightest stars. Steve Harwell, the lead singer and co-founder of Smash Mouth, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023, at his home in Boise, Idaho. He was 56 years old. His manager confirmed that he died of liver failure, a condition that he had been battling for a long time. Harwell was not only a talented singer, but also a pop culture icon. He was famous for his distinctive voice and charismatic personality, as well as his hit songs such as "All Star" and "I'm a Believer". He had an amazing career in the music industry, spanning over three decades and selling over 10 million albums worldwide with his band. He also had a colorful life, marked by his passion for music.
He was born on January 9, 1967, in Santa Clara, California. He grew up in San Jose, where he developed an interest in rap music and joined a group called F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech). He later switched to rock music and formed Smash Mouth with his friend Kevin Coleman, along with Greg Camp and Paul De Lisle. Harwell was influenced by various artists, such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and The Clash.
Harwell and his bandmates started their career in 1994, playing at local venues and festivals. They caught the attention of a radio station that played their demo songs, which led to a record deal with Interscope Records. Their debut album, Fush Yu Mang , was released in 1997 and featured their first hit single, "Walkin' on the Sun", which reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and number two on the Hot 100 chart.
Their second album, Astro Lounge , was released in 1999 and became their most successful album to date. It contained their signature song, "All Star", which topped the charts in several countries and became a pop culture phenomenon. The song was featured in the soundtrack of the animated film Shrek , as well as other movies and TV shows. It also earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. Another popular song from the album was "I'm a Believer", a cover of The Monkees' classic song, which also appeared in Shrek .
Smash Mouth continued to release more albums in the 2000s and 2010s, such as Get the Picture? , The Gift of Rock , Summer Girl , Magic , and Rise and Shine . They experimented with different genres and styles, such as ska punk, reggae, country, and disco. They also collaborated with other artists, such as Baha Men, Eddie Money, J.D. McPherson, and Caravan Palace. Harwell also pursued a solo career, releasing two songs for the animated film Pororo: The Racing Adventure in 2013.
Harwell received many accolades and achievements for his music career. He won several awards from MTV, Billboard , Teen Choice , ASCAP , BMI , and others. He also performed at various events and venues around the world, such as the Super Bowl XXXVII halftime show, the World Series , the Olympic Games , Disneyland , and Carnegie Hall . He also appeared on several TV shows and movies, such as The Surreal Life , Rat Race , American Idol , Dancing with the Stars , Family Guy , Kim Possible , Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated , and SpongeBob SquarePants .
He died on September 4, 2023, after being in hospice care for final stage chronic liver failure. He is survived by his wife Michelle Laroque Harwell.
Harwell will be remembered as one of the most influential singers of his generation.

Smash Mouth - Burn Cycle (HQ Audio)
youtube
I normally don't comment on celebrity deaths (ok, unless there's like a Simpsons reference to them), but I do want to talk about Steve Harwell for a bit.
Before every other band that I've loved/obsessed over, there was Smash Mouth. I heard "All Star" in 1999 and like the rest of the world, I was hooked. I played the crap out of Astro Lounge and eventually got their other albums. I didn't really listen to music before Smash Mouth.
They weren't truly popular. I was probably the only middle schooler who thought they were cool. I was weird, didn't connect with the other kids, so bands like Smash Mouth and Limp Bizkit got me through the days.
Smash Mouth was my first concert when I was 13. Mom took me to the TLA in Philly and they put on a hell of a show. I remember being awestruck when Steve Harwell started giving high fives to the crowd, me included. It was the highlight of my year.
Tastes change, and by the time I hit high school, I was listening to Rancid and Green Day instead of Smash Mouth. They still always had a special place in my heart.
In the last few years, Smash Mouth has been the band to meme. You couldn't get away from "All Star" in the early 2000's and as adults, my generation paid them back for that. In my opinion/speculation, Smash Mouth didn't start out as a family friendly band. They had songs about drugs ("Stoned"), teenage pregnancy ("Nervous in the Alley"). "Sorry" is an absolute riot to listen to. But with "All Star" I don't think they expected it to blow up like it did and were forced away from their more rough and tumble roots. I think part of it was too, they embraced it to an extent. Nothing wrong with that.
But I know more what people focus on are the last years of Steve Harrell's life. The drunken performance, his disregard for Covid Protocols. And while I in no way support that, the guy did not have an easy life. Steve's son died at 6 months old. I can't imagine the hurt and pain that comes with it. And while I'm not any sort of mental health professional, I think that death triggered Steve's self destructive tendencies. I think he held pain and guilt from it and would do anything not to feel.
Even with all of that, I still have a soft spot for Smash Mouth for pretty much kick-starting everything and having some truly awesome songs. I hope Steve Harwell has found peace. And, once again, thanks Steve, for making a 13 year old weirdo's first concert a terrific experience.

Thank you Steve Harwell!
Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth fame sadly passed away today from liver failure. Our thoughts and prayers go with his family and loved ones.
True fact: All Star was not intended to be the main theme of Shrek. It was originally used as a placeholder but the filmmakers loved it so much they decided to keep it in the film.

Correspondence in the George J. Stigler papers
The series arrangement in the Stigler papers for Correspondence are divided into two sub-series: Alphabetical and Chronological. This ordering is consistent with the original order of the collection, the way in which it was arranged and used by Professor George Stigler and his office and research staff. In total, the correspondence series is composed of 48 boxes (24 linear feet), and include memos, postcards, greeting cards, notes, telegrams, facsimiles, printed emails, and, of course, letters (both handwritten and typed). Some of the Stigler correspondence files explore the discovery, genealogy, history, and advancement of thought, theory, and praxis in economics.
A rather unexpected letter is included. It is written from within the confines of the State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon in Pennsylvania, from an inmate named Sunni Ali Ber (Frank Reynolds Harwell Sr.). He requested a conference poster from the History of Economics Society and an “old or worn or used or slightly abused or messed up” copy of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. The shortest letter in the collection was from Alan G. Hirsh writing, simply, “I quit.” There is also the interesting case of the Nobel Prize in Economics and the responses it generated in the form of congratulatory letters, greeting cards, telegrams, invites, postcards, and such. Most interestingly among them were several letters from people in Indiana, New York, Uruguay, Switzerland, and Germany, inquiring of Stigler’s genealogy. Is it possible that we’re related, they asked. He could not affirm that they were related but noted that “My father, Joseph Stigler, was born in the small town of Lengenfeld, south east of Nuremberg, on March 24, 1978.” Further, “I have received several letters from different families in southern Germany but with no clear evidence of relatedness.” Adding, “I am sorry that I didn’t learn or remember, more family history."
There are many other interesting letters in the collection. Many of them will be quite useful to researchers and other library patrons.
