The 10 Biggest Hurricanes to hit the US
Wind speed, deaths, intensity, and cost are what define a strong hurricane. They bring fear, death and destruction in cost of billions. The U.S is probably the most hit country from Hurricanes, the most recent one is Hurricane Harvey. Harvey made landfall on Friday as a Category 4 hurricane and hit Texas near Corpus Christi and along with the high-speed winds. Harvey brought an immense amount of rain and we were talking about Huston and surrounding areas with catastrophic flood, so far the storm has dumped more than 24 inches of rain over Southern Texas. Some are reporting that we should expect that number to double to 50 inches in some areas and the thing is, it is not over yet. Over the next few days Harvey is forecast to head back into the gulf of Mexico and they expected to pick up moisture before moving back over Galveston, Texas and into Houston again. This will be huge. So far 30 deaths have been reported by the national weather service and because this is a developing situation that number is more likely to rise. 30,000 people may be forced into temporary shelters and more than 50,000 people will seek some sort of disaster assistance. But as scary as this looks the U.S has been hit by even bigger and more destructive Hurricanes. Here are the top 10 of all recorded Hurricanes in history.
10. Hurricane Sandy - 2012 Hurricane Sandy, also known as "Superstorm Sandy", was one of the strongest Hurricanes to ever hit the US in the 21st century and the biggest to hit the areas of New York and New Jersey. It also hit Bermuda and the Caribbean Islands, causing massive destruction at a cost of more than $71.4 in the US only and leaving more than 280 people dead.
9. Labor Day Hurricane - 1935 The "Labor Day" Hurricane of the year 1935 was one of the most intense Hurricanes to ever hit the US, wind speeds toping at 295 km/h (185 mph). The Hurricane broke through the Florida Keys as a Category 5 Storm before turning inland and hitting as a category 2 storm, which was still enough force and speed to leave more 400 people dead.
8. Hurricane Audrey - 1957 Hurricane Audrey at the time, it was the strongest hurricane to form before the month of August, reaching a top wind speed of 233 km/h (145 mph), until 2005 when Hurricane Dennis surpassed it. The damages in cost were more than 147 million of which 16 million were caused to oil facilities of the shores. An estimated 400 people are confirmed dead but this number is estimated to be more than 600.
7. Georgia Hurricane - 1881 Georgia-South Carolina Hurricane was a Category 2 hurricane, it made landfall on Ossabaw Island off the coast of Georgia, went by and wreaked havoc in Savannah and parts of South Carolina. The Georgia Hurricane, is one of the deadliest Hurricanes to have ever hit the US. 700 people were confirmed dead but that number is thought to be higher.
6. Florida Keys - 1919 The storm ripped through the Florida Keys as a Category 5 storm. The hurricane caused the sinking of 10 ships in the Florida Straits as it moved through. About 500 lives were lost on these ships. The Florida Keys Hurricane made landfall as a Category 2 Hurricane. Later it moved and made landfall on Texas but stronger at a Category 3 Hurricane. Total storm damages were $22 million (1919 USD) with at least 750 people confirmed dead.
5. Sea Islands Hurricane - 1893 Sea Islands Hurricane struck near Savannah, Georgia. At the force of a Category 3 Hurricane, before veering into South Carolina. It came at high tide, storms surging at 4.9 meters (16 feet) tall, according to the National Weather Service. An estimated 1,100 to 2,000 people died (mostly by drowning), but that number could be even higher. Although the hurricane was devastating, the American Red Cross did not arrive until October the 1st, possibly because of ongoing efforts following another hurricane that hit South Carolina in June.
4. Cheniere Caminada Hurricane - 1893 At the time, the 1893 Atlantic hurricane season was the most destructive in the US history with two storms killing more than 2,000 people each. The Cheniere Caminada Hurricane also known as the "Great October" Storm, struck as Category 4 storm, at an island off the coast of Louisiana. Nearly 2,000 people died, including those killed in boats off-shore, according to the National Weather Service. The 1893 hurricane season is one of only two seasons (the other in 1998), where four hurricanes existed concurrently on the same day in the Atlantic basin.
3. Hurricane Katrina - 2005 Hurricane Katrina was a powerful and deadly storm. Katrina made landfall in the United States at three different locations. The storm made landfall as a Category 5 near Miami-Dade / Broward county line in Florida before striking Louisiana as a Category 3 storm top wind speeds reaching at 280 km/h (175 mph). Katrina caused an estimated $108 billion in damage, making it the costliest hurricane ever to strike the United States. 1.200 People were confirmed dead according to the National Weather Service, but that number could be even higher.
2. Okeechobee Hurricane - 1928 The Category 4 storm made landfall on September 10, in Palm Beach. This hurricane was the second deadliest in US history. Puerto Rico got hit hard as well, with wind speeds at 231 km/h (144 mph). The total damages from the storm amounted to $100 million (1928 USD) across the Caribbean and the US, with $50 million only in Puerto Rico. This hurricane remains the second deadliest hurricane in U.S. The official death toll of the event, as set by the American Red Cross, is 1,836, but was later raised to “at least 2,500*” in 2003 by the National Weather Service, with the asterisk denoting that the actual count will never actually be known.
1. Galveston Hurricane - 1900 The deadliest hurricane in US history happened at the turn of the 20th century. The Category 4 storm made landfall with wind speeds at 251 km/h (156 mph) in Galveston, Texas, then headed north through the Great Plains, in Palm Beach County, Florida. The storm flattened thousands of buildings in the coastal city of Galveston by a storm surge more than 4.6 meters (15 feet) tall, leaving many people homeless. It killed at least 8,000 people, according to the National Weather Service but the unofficial number is thought to be higher than 12,000 people, making this hurricane the deadliest in US history and one of the deadliest in the world.
