At Stephanie’s currently Showing: HARRY BERTSCHMANN Few artists in the history of American art have possessed the level of Harry Bertschmann’s genius and output. In order to help viewers absorb the diversity and depth of his life’s work. After graduating at the top of his class of 1949 at the Basel School of Design in Switzerland he found success as a graphic designer, first in Cleveland, and from 1962-on in New York. By nature, humble and unpretentious, he was nonetheless acutely aware of his skills and gifted vision. Every day throughout his life he made visual leaps that challenged emerging movements. Persistently experimental, he delighted in discovering new dynamics — not only within abstract and figurative expressionism but in stylistic movements as seemingly disparate as Hard Edge, Photorealism, Minimalism, and Pop. He was blessed with such ambidextrous skill, coordination, and vision that he was like a professional athlete who could perform exceedingly well at a different sport on any day. The back story is that Bertschmann is a master who led double lives, first earning a living by day as a graphic designer. Walk into any CVS or Walmart and you’ll see a dozen packaging designs that have remained iconic in brand recognition within America’s consumer culture. Kent and Newport cigarettes, Nestlé’s, Advil, Excedrin, and Bufferin are but a few. By night he steadfastly pursued his fine art, fluidly alternating between two paths of life. #harrybertschmann #bertschmannoilpainting #Bertschmannart #art #fineart #artexhibition #lacañada #artofNY #abstractexpressionism #figurativeexpressionism #figurativepopart #figurativeart #hardedge #minimalism #landscape #illustration #stuggart #formcomposites #bankstreetart #stephanisgallery (at Stephanie's Art Gallery & Custom Framing) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnChO8yrwlV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Currently Showing at Stephanie's: HARRY BERTSCHMANN Harry Bertschmann trained at the Basel School of Design (the Kunstgewerbeschule) in Switzerland. His teachers were Armin Hofmann, Walter Bodmer, Emil Ruder, Theo Eble, Donald Burn, and others. He apprenticed at Fritz Buehler’s Atelier in Basel working closely with Buehler and Walter Bosshart with an emphasis in graphic design techniques, concept aesthetics, and painting. During the 1950s he lived in Cleveland and was given 10 solo exhibitions at Case Western Reserve University. After winning First Prize at the May Show the Cleveland Museum of Art, one of his large abstract canvases was accepted to the prestigious Carnegie International of 1957. He enjoyed many solo exhibitions at the Howard Wise Gallery in Cleveland, including one when the gallery moved to New York in 1960. Despite this early success he focused upon his career in a graphic design and created numerous iconic package designs and logos still widely in use today. In 1997 a retrospective exhibition given by the Gewerbeverband Basel-Stadt Gallery honored 140 of his graphic design works. Bertschmann continued to paint every day and his canvases have been privately purchased by a number of museums, including the Boca Raton Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Art Gallery at UNC, and Case Western Reserve University. Corporate collections owning his paintings include Investcorp, Pfizer, Standard Chartered, Homburger, the Lila Wallace Readers Digest Collection, and ABSA Securities Collection. In 2018 the Fashion Institute of Technology honored him with the President’s Award of Lifetime Achievement. #Bertschman #HarryBertschmann #contemporaryart #modernart #contemporarypainting #artexhibition #artcollector #stephaniesgallery #artexhibition (at Stephanie's Art Gallery & Custom Framing) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZDL7HNvKC6/?utm_medium=tumblr

#StephaniesViewingRoom: "Red & Yellow", Untitled AbEx, 1990s, 16 x 20 inches, acrylic on canvas board. Harry Bertschmann was born in Basel, Switzerland, on March 27, 1931, but has lived and worked most of his life in New York City. As a youth growing up after World War II he was immersed in Basel's dozens of museums for the fine arts. The Kunstmuseum Basel gave him exposure to one of the great collections in the world spanning all periods. He was also impressed by art found in the extensive ethnographic collections at the Basel Museum of Cultures, especially the boldly carved and painted objects from New Guinea's Sepik River region. #HarryBertschmann #Bertschmann #NewYorkPainter #Art #1stdibs #stephaniesgallery #online #instageram #stephaniesgallery #LaCanadaFlintridge #cityofFlintridge #LosAnglesArt #FineArt #ContemporaryArt #Abstract #abstractlanguage (at Stephanie's Art Gallery & Custom Framing) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_-UyvUnNt7/?igshid=1o5oed12vedqg
