TOP 10 BOOKS ON FANFICTION.NET BASED ON NUMBER OF FANFICTION (1999-2022)

To make this bar chart race, all series titles in the Books Section on November 29 (or the closest date to it) of every year were copy-pasted from Wayback Machine to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then inputted to Flourish to turn into a bar chart race.

Hitchhiker's Guide to [...] is short for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Romance of the 3 [...] is short for Romance of the 3 Kingdoms.

In 2000-2003, FFN used Miscellaneous Novels as a catch-all tag for all books that didn’t have their own category yet. It was then renamed to Misc. Books in 2004-2007 before it was removed by 2008.

In 1999, fanfiction weren’t divided into sections like Anime/Manga, TV, Books, etc. yet. It was just a small list of mixed fandoms.

Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles was actually in third place in the year 2000 with 126 fanfiction. However, it was the only year FFN had fanfiction for her works, that’s why it doesn’t turn up in the bar chart race.

In 2001, a new category called Harry Potter Author Fics was in 4th place with 888 fanfiction, but this category was removed by the following year.

FFN also hosted Vampire Hunter fanfiction in 2001-2002, but was later on removed because its author L. K. Hamilton didn't want fanfiction of her works.

The Tamora Pierce category was in the Books Section from 2001-2009 as a catch-all category for Pierce’s works before it was removed by 2009.

Similarly, the L.J. Smith category was in the Books Section from 2000-2007 as a catch-all category for Smith’s works before it was removed sometime in 2009.

I've decided to keep the author categories in the bar chart race since most if not all of their series did not get their own category until their author's category was removed.

Originally, the fanfiction list was sorted alphabetically too, but was changed to number of fics at around early 2013.

By November 2013, FFN started abbreviating numbers above 1,000 to K, so exact numbers aren't available for series with more than 1,000 fanfiction.

This bar chart was made with the assumption that the numbers listed in the Books section are correct. I can't seem to get the same numbers for some of these series when I go to the specific series' page and toggle ratings, other filters, and language to All though... I'm not sure where the discrepancy is coming from. (And it’s not the crossover fic numbers that need to be added to serie’s total fics from what I’ve observed.)

For example, HP currently has 844k fanfiction, but if you go to HP’s page and toggle ratings, other filters, and language to All, you’ll only get 800k fics. HP also has 51.3K crossover fanfiction, but adding those two still doesn’t equate to 844k...

Why?

They both died prematurely for their cause

James = Hamilton

Why?

They both fell in love w a man(/boy) first

Then they had a wife

Then they died while leaving a small child behind (Harry / Philip the second)

They both survived the cause their lover died for

NOW

James and Regulus were a thing in their Hogwarts years, being all lovey-dovey and then Regulus died (idk if he got to finish Hogwarts)

Hamilton and Laurens were a thing during the war, being brain-deep in love and then Laurens died after the war was technically over

Both James and Hamilton lost their lovers

Then they found their wife's (Lily / Eliza). And then, they were married and then died because of the ""betrayal"" (burr didn't betray hamilton but for lack of a better word imma just call it that) of a friend (Burr / Peter) (yes I'm reaching here rn let me) and left their wives and little children behind to fend for themselves (Lily died only minutes after but STILL MY POINT STANDS) (Philip 2 was about 1/2 when his dad died).

So.

In conclusion.

Jegulus is Lams reincarnated and it wouldn't be too much of a reach to write a fanfiction about that.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Currently, Percy Jackson! I tend to be pretty one fandom at a time, but in the past I've written for Hamilton, Harry Potter, and Marvel to name a few.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

Yes! I'm a huge believe in fandom as a community, and fanfiction as an avenue for that community vs just 'content'. I love answering questions and talking about the fics, and I've honestly made some amazing fandom friends in comments on fics. I think commenting is a really valuable part of community-building in fandom, and I think that replying to comments helps with that :)

6. What's the fic you wrote that has the angstiest ending?

I think this is all a matter of perspective, but I definitely have a few that are regarded as angsty even if I don't necessarily see them that way? Picking one, I might have to say See The Beast You've Made of Me.

7. What's the fic you wrote that has the happiest ending?

This is harder to answer lol, a lot of my happier fics are more moments, rather than a having an ending with build-up. But, Love Has A Way To Find Ya (Sneaks Up Right Behind Ya) is the first one that comes to mind!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have actually been very fortunate in this regard! I've had a few negative comments for sure, but most are more along the lines of "stopping reading here" or just poorly worded. I have several fics I've been more worried about, but locking the fics has seemed to discourage anyone who wants to be senselessly cruel! A lot of what I write isn't to everyone's taste, so some less than perfect comments come with that territory.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I absolutely have lmao. I haven't been in the mood for it recently, but I have my fair share. As for what kind, it depends on the ship and dynamic, and how seriously I'm treating it lol. I've written daddy kink to casual pegging to sweet losses of virginity.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Not really? I have a few ideas that have broached crossover territory, but I don't make a habit or it!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes, though not recently. I'm sure there's a lot more out there in all honesty, but I've only stumbled across it once or twice on random websites when I've had the thought to google my username.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! I've been fortunate to have a couple translated, and it's always the most amazing feeling ever.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, I've co-written quite a few! I've done round-robins as well as more formal collabs where both authors are working together and writing together throughout the process. I really enjoy doing them and have written some of my favorite fics with others! They're definitely challenging, but I think I have the benefit of being pretty adaptable.

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

So one thing you need to know about me is that I'm really bad at favorites. I think my favorite canon ship amongst my fandoms would be Percabeth, but my favorite ship for reading fanfiction for would, historically, be Tomarry/Harrymort/whatever you want to call it.

15. What's a wip you want to finish, but don't think you ever will?

I am actively determined to finish the ones first coming to mind, but honestly the one I doubt I'll ever do anything with is the AU lovingly referred to as Percy French Whore lmfao

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think my adaptability is my greatest strength. I definitely have themes and patterns I fall into, but overall I try to keep an open-mind to ships, aus, and more. I've gone back and forth between past and present tense, I've written over 25 ships for PJO alone. There's very little I look at and think I can't write, even if it takes some time to come around to it/make it work for me.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I think my biggest weaknesses have to do with managing a story as a whole. I have these grand ideas, but I struggle to bring them to Completeness. I'll have dreams of showing a realistic development of a character from the one we know and love to something twisted and taken advantage of and miss a few beats, and drop a few characters and plot points along the way. I'm also not the best at worldbuilding. I'm a pretty low-context type of person, and it's highlighted in a fanfction type of environment. I'll get questions about worldbuilding in fics--and they'll be GOOD questions--and I'll sit there with my head tilted at the screen wondering why anyone would think of that 😭

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I like the idea of it, but would definitely need help from a native speaker. I got overly confident with my high school Spanish classes and made an attempt and I will never be doing that again.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Twilight. First fandom I read for, first fandom I posted for. Twilight was how I discovered fanfiction.net and started me down this path.

Yes because I think it's common courtesy. I didn't always but I've changed my way of thinking lately! A simple thank you is all that is needed too!

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

As someone who loves angst I'm sad to say, they all have happy endings! Though I love those too. The only fic I can think of that's vaguely angsty is a Brokeback Mountain fic on ff.net.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably my modern JP fic nobody can deny that there's something there. That's the most fluffy happy ending I ever remember writing.

Do you get hate on fics?

The only thing I can think of is a comment someone put on a rec list that included my fic. I was happy to see my fic included but then they said the sex was a "clear no." It kept me from writing sex scenes for years.

Do you write smut?

See above. Occasionally but a lot of fade to black.

No, but I did start a hamilton/star wars one that's somewhere in my google docs

Yes! My friend and I wrote a few together. I liked that we both got to use our strengths to work together.

Ooooof hard. I have so many! I do feel like I always come back to Han/Leia (though I've never published a fic of it!) or Kirk/Bones. John/Paul will probably end up as an all time fav too.

What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

A Hamilton fic that I never published or finished but I think about often. Maybe if I ever get back to a Hamilton phase again.

What are your writing strengths?

I'm not really sure but my friend has told me I do better writing funny fics or parts and writing kid speak (though I haven't done much of either of those lately ����🏻‍♀️)

What are your writing weaknesses?

A lot. But if I had to pick one, I'd say writing in clear detail and using creative word choice (I always use the same words for everything!)

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I don't think it's really necessary because most people reading it won't understand. I can think of a few fics where I could tell they just used google translate and while google translate it fine in some cases, you're better off just leaving it out because people are just going to gloss over it anyways. If the author speaks the other language that would be better.

First fandom you wrote for?

Ever? Harry Potter in high school. I wrote the fic on sheets of notebook paper and passed it to my friend. I'm pretty sure I still have it and I would be so mortified to read it again 😳

Favorite fic you've written?

I think my modern JP fic? It's one I can re-read with minimal embarrassment lol.

IFD 2023 - Crossover and Fusion Fic Recs

Look. It would be tacky to recommend my own crossover fic. So I'm not gonna do that. But here are some current faves in that arena, from multiple fandoms (all of these are from AO3, though if I had time I would dig for some old FF.Net ones)

The End of Magic (Avalon High/BBC Merlin) Where Allie is the Lady of the Lake as she was in the book, while Miles is still Merlin and still in love with said Lady of the Lake. Ending’s a bit sad, but there are so few Avalon High fics, let alone Merlin crossovers, so I had to rep.

every breath, every hour has come to this (Avalon High/BBC Merlin) Merlin never reincarnated in Miles, but Arthur reincarnated into Allie. Merlin finally finds Arthur after all this time, and gets a bit of a shock. Merthur.

if you ever did believe (Ted Lasso/Practical Magic fusion) Rebecca is a witch cursed to either die of a broken heart or become consumed with bitterness. After Rupert betrays her, she's leaning towards bitterness... but a spell cast in her youth may come back to change all that. Lots of interesting departures from the Practical Magic plot specifics while still capturing the magical feel. Also, even funnier since Hannah Waddingham has played a witch more than once. Also Ted/Rebecca centric, which is just adorable.

The Schneiders of Stars Hollow (Marvelous Mrs. Maisel/Gilmore Girls) "Jess is tasked with taking a delivery order to 36 Maple, where a nice old couple from New York spend a few months out of the year. It turns out that the Schneiders are...not quite who Jess thinks they are." (Or: Lenny Bruce marries Midge instead of dying of an overdose in the 60s. Marital bliss and a name change ensues). I just love this idea so much. I'm not even much of a Midge/Lenny shipper, but the idea of them as an old couple wintering in Stars Hollow and snarking at the goings-on is just too good. Also highly recommend checking out the author's tumblr ( @wonderlandleighleigh) , she sometimes posts drabble fics in this universe and they are, in a word, marvelous!

Bright (Agents of Shield/Stardust fusion) Fitzsimmons as Yvaine and Tristan respectively are so cute, while also flipping gender roles for fun. I'm just happy to see the Stardust film referenced, even if it has to be in the form of fusions like this. Also features Steggy as Jemma's parents, which *yes*.

Harry Potter: The Legends Reborn (Harry Potter/BBC Merlin) What if Harry and Draco were the reincarnations of Merlin and Arthur? How do sworn enemies reconcile with their pasts as close friends? How does Harry reconcile his incredible abilities as Merlin while trying to hide out as a typical (if famous) Hogwarts student? Features some surprising reincarnations and fascinating character parallels. Only drawback is the author is more familiar with the movies than the books in a few places, but overall good stuff. (note: platonic Merthur/Drarry, not shipping)

Guardian Tadashi AU (Lighting Candles and A Friend in the Dark) (Rise of the Guardians/Big Hero 6) Gets a little angsty at times, what with Tadashi dealing with existential crisis after existential crisis now that he's a magical spirit whose brother can't see him, but overall hopeful and beautiful. Really fleshes out Tadashi as his own chaarcter beyond the saintly older brother, and the banter and imagery are pretty amazing.

Don't be shocked when your hist'ry book mentions me (Sleepy Hollow(TV)/Hamilton) Alexander Hamilton wakes up in modern day Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod and Abbie are there to help.

In a pub, briefly (Outlander/Captain America MCU) I just love the idea of Peggy Carter and Claire as friends during World War II. Sue me.

Henry Tilney and Mr. Norrell (Northanger Abbey/Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell) Henry Tilney is the second magician in England, but his magics are more based in his mothers homemaking spells than anything big and flashy, so it's lovingly feminist in its way. Also, Catherine is just so into it.I really wish the author had gone a bit farther with this one, but what's there is quite lovely.

My Heart Don't Wish to Roam> (Captain America/Merlin/Doctor Who) This series of Steggy AU one-shots includes a couple of different fusion ideas, which I enjoy.
