I can tell how much effort you put into your Narrator design he looks so cool (completely positive) (like goddamn how do you NOT mess up that goodly) (the man ever)

WAHH thank you so much!!!

A lot did go into him. Allow me to ramble for a moment about my inspirations for him:

1) Peter Jones

According to an interview with Kevan Brighting by Cressup on YouTube, he said he got inspiration for the Narrator's voice from Peter Jones in the original radio play of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. So I already had a good idea of where to go with my Narrator, specifically the vibe of a late 60s -70s radio host. Mixed with 80s work clothes as well.

2) Various 60s-80s work clothes.

I just looked stuff up on Pinterest but these first two pics of Gregory Peck and Clint Eastwood REALLY gave me a lot of the vibes I wanted to go for. (Also Harrison Ford in the 2010s but Tumblr has a 10 image limit 😭😭). I also thought Saul Goodman/Jimmy McGill fit the vibe as well. Moreso in looks than personality but Idk. Maybe that as well.

3) Stylization from other cartoons

And then to kind of stylize the look I wanted to go for, I looked at different characters and cartoons. Specifically, Ford Pines from Gravity Falls (especially him bc I thought it was funny that he had a brother named Stanley so I mean duh. Plus Alex Hirsch IS in Ultra Deluxe which is hilarious), a lot of concept art from Batman the animated series, and especially the Iron Giant. I'm actually planning to make a short animation with the Narrator and a scene from the Iron Giant for a class project! (Actually tbh, I definitely wanted to capture babygirl vibes that everyone's been talking about on Twitter and I know Saul Goodman and Kent Mansley definitely had those vibes XDD.)

4) Other internet artists

I don't want to repost their art without permission so I'll just mention names:

Forte-Girl7's/Forte7's Wheatley gijinka was actually the first gijinka I've ever seen for like anything and considering that the Narrator (especially in Ultra Deluxe) gave me more Wheatley vibes, I wanted to kind of pay tribute to her.

Also you've ever seen Bechnokid's Yokai Watch/Whisper art, that was also a big inspiration dhsjjsjs.

And of course there are the GOATs like MissAzura and CYM-K whose takes on the Narrator I've adored and actually got me into this fandom in the first place. Sooooo yeah!

There's also my own OC whom the Narrator reminded me incessantly of and he also played a part of my own Narrator design. And of course a biiiit of Kevan Brighting himself mixed with my pure imagination coming up with a simultaneously vague and particular image of what the narrator looked like in my head.

And of course, there were other things in game that informed the Narrator's character that I wanted to translated into his character design (i.e squarish shape language bc of his perfectionism and obsession with structure but also cuz of the exposed developer textures and of course the color scheme being close to the office colors in the game).

But yeah! There's more I could talk about in terms of the Narrator as a character but I'm saving that for later hehehheheh

I think two things can be true that some actors have a little more pull then others while I also agree I think we do need to place emphasis on some other factors b/c anon is right you cant talk about box office success in isolation, other factors do play a role in determing the financial success of projects.

Do I think actors have the same pull they once had in the 90s on par with likes of tom cruise, julia roberts, matt damons at their height etc absolutely not but I think thats a byproduct of changing dynamics within the industry and the emergence of social media but with that said its safe to say some actors today are still able to get audiences more than others but sometimes you need a spiderman or dune or star wars or a kid friendly movie to help you get that stage in your career where you can call yourself a box office pull sadly thats just the industry which is domonated by IPs, franchises, reboots and sequels.

That's def true... I mean, with the invent of social media, internet, etc, the way fame and box office draw is calculated is very different than from the 90's.

I also feel like there was a much bigger DIVIDE btwn famous people and just regular Joe's/moviegoers.

With that said, I'm always happy to see my fellow Millennials and Gen Z actors getting good box office numbers, because it means there's hope for the industry. 😊 Let's face it, the older actors aren't getting any younger, and a lot of them are dying, or are getting too old to do the acting that they used to do. Even Harrison Ford said he's DONE with "Indiana Jones" lol.

Daniel Craig is DONE with Bond lol....

Tom Cruise will probably be the only GOAT actor still jumping off of buildings at age 80 ROTFL 😅🤣

But I'm sick and tired of people saying that younger actors (non-Boomer generation) aren't promising enough, or can't hold a candle to older actors. A lot of people don't factor in that times have CHANGED. This isn't the 80s and 90s. Even Hollywood isn't the same as it once was. The economy isn't what it once was. Like, a lot of things aren't the same.

So, when I see our generation succeeding, I'm happy. 😊

Unsure how much you've heard of Enoch exactly, so I'll go over the basics of him and some fun extras!

Enoch is a half human half demon transgender man! He's got red goat eyes, goat horns, and greying brown hair! He was born in 1970/1971 (I haven't made up my mind which year yet) and he's got trauma!!! His hobbies are murder, weed, and topping old men. He doesn't have much of a home but he was born in Italy and spent the first thirteen years of his life there. He loves his shitty car, his shitty dad (until he doesn't), his best friend, and his best friend's brother.

Some fun facts: he heals really fast and can grow back teeth. He's functionally immortal due to his father (the demon). He's got autism but he doesn't know it. Sometimes he is incorporeal and can mostly control how he presents in the world, but during times of extreme emotion, he loses control. He likes eating extremely spicy foods. He can't cook to save his life. He's terrible at remembering to take showers and buy new clothes. He misses his mother. His first crush was Harrison Ford. He legally doesn't exist. When he was a child, he tried to gouge his eyes out. His favorite color is green, and he likes to wear yellow shirts. He has a soft spot for animals and children.

Devil Magick Strike Mood of Stoic Reflection with New Single, “Tears in Rain”

~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

Doom arises from both the most obvious and unlikely of places, including sunny Cali where you wouldn't think the vibe would be that, er, hot. After all, scenes like San Diego are alight with dazzling heavy psych bands, the desert long ago claimed by Kyuss, and the mountains belong to an exciting array of progressive metal bands. Yet, the City of Angeles has remained a holdout for Doom over the decades, despite challenges with COVID, venue closures, and being frustratingly overlooked by promoters.

This bring us to LA's DEVIL MAGICK, who describe their sound as "gloomy doom metal with with a heavy metal spirit and hardcore attitude, from the sun bathed shored of Southern California's harbor area." With twin guitar magic, a bass and drums section to rule them all, and shared vocal duties, Devil Magick is "preparing to bring its own unique brand of doom to the world."

Their first single, "Tears in Rain," is a loving tribute to Ridley Scott's monumental film Blade Runner, based on the speech of the character Roy Batty at the film's end.

As I listen, it's like watching the film again and pausing it on that last scene between a precariously dangling Harrison Ford and a ripped and menacing Rutger Hauer, who plays the rebellious replicant Roy. He returns to Tyrell Corporation to ask his Creator for a life-extension, only to find out that his sole purpose in life was to extend the will of the ape-man over the known universe.

The problem is Roy Batty and his pals saw endless horror in the off-world colonies and have kind of snapped, returning to earth as murderous monsters with a sort of super-strenth. We don't know what's gone wrong with the replicants, only that they need to die and don't want to. This makes them exceptionally difficult to "retire" for a middle-aged Blade Runner like Decker.

It's a veritable Greek tragedy set in the future year of 2019, and "Tears in Rain" recalls a moment in the film when a fragically frail side of Roy is revealed to Decker. That is when rain falls down hard from toxic skies above. In his last moments, we see Roy shed tears for the first time as he shuffles off this mortal coil, wondering what it had all really been about. Having burned twice as bright as his human counterparts, he was destined to live half as long (just four years, if I remember).

Searing guitar tone a la Black Cobra and vocals that make me think of none other than the late, great Peter Steele of Type O Negative, not so much because the range is similar but because of the deadpan, stoic vocal delivery coupled with an atmosphere of wintery sadness. Call it doom 'n' roll or even dark metal, if you like. "Tears in Rain" gets us acquainted with Devil Magick's powers, with strong hints of the potential to come.

Congrats to guitarists Don Casterline and Kevin Aguilar, bassist Pete Bucci, and drummer Jose Garcia on their first foray into the world of doom. I can't wait to hear what follows. The single will be available this weekend on the band's Bandcamp page (get it here).

How did you come up with all the binomial names?

By drawing a pentagram on my bedroom floor and sacrificing a goat to some eldritch monstrosity, in exchange for arcane knowledge.

Honestly, my approach to creating binomen varies from monster to monster. I always set out with the intention of keeping the names as grammatically correct as possible, in line with the declensions for Greek and Latin. I do my best to adhere to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, but at the end of the day, I’m just one nerd with no formal training. I’m very much an armchair linguist, and while there’s nothing wrong with being an autodidact, it does make me prone to second-guessing. Doesn’t really help that I don’t have a list of acquaintances to consult, who would actually be able to give me reliable feedback.

Sometimes, though, I think a little inexperience makes the naming process more authentic. Because scientists are people, and you can never underestimate the capacity of people to be Extra As Hell.

Let me give you a few examples:

In 2004, entomologists Kelly B. Miller and Quentin D. Wheeler reclassified a genus of leiodid fungus beetles as Gelae (/ˈdʒɛli/). Yes, it is pronounced exactly the way you think it is. The species in this newly-christened genus include G. baen (“jelly bean”), G. belae (“jelly belly”), G. donut (“jelly doughnut”), G. fish (“jelly fish”), and G. rol (“jelly roll”). The authors said that they were merely wordplays without any taxonomical jargon; a “whimsical arrangement of letters.”

And then there’s the lovely Heteropoda davidbowie, described by Peter Jäger. The name was selected for a few reasons: (1), the colors and patterns on the spider’s face resemble the painted face makeup David Bowie wore in his early career; (2), the name references the song “Glass Spider,” as well as his album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars; (3), the species has an estimated 500 individuals left, so Jäger hoped that giving it a catchy name would draw headlines and help with conservation efforts.

Allow me to introduce you to a trilobite described by Samuel Turvey in 2005. Its name? Han solo. Turvey called it that because a couple of his friends dared him to name a species after a Star Wars character. And while you might roll your eyes at that, the name is actually really clever. The generic name Han is a reference to the Han people, the largest ethnic group in China (where the trilobite was found); the specific epithet solo refers to the fact it’s the sole species belonging to that genus; and like many trilobites, the fossils tend to be extremely well-preserved, similar to how Harrison Ford was preserved in carbonite.

I could literally go on for days. There’s even a website dedicated to compiling all of the ridiculous names out there called Curiosities of Biological Nomenclature. The person who does the heavy-lifting is a bloke named Mark Isaak, and they deserve mad respect.

There’s a point I’m trying to make, I swear.

You see, if professional scientists with degrees can get away with making nerdy references and butchering the grammar of Latin and Greek, THEN SO CAN I.

Sometimes I’ll give monsters really cool or epic-sounding names that try to capture a quality about them, whether that’s their appearance, geographic range, behavior, or some historical fact pertaining to their discovery.

Some of my favorites include:

The verdant qurupeco, Cantio sirenius. Its name means “siren’s song” in Latin, a reference to the high fidelity of its vocal mimicry.

The dire miralis, Pyrothalassion basileus. Its name translates to “Greek fire emperor.” Its generic name comes from an incendiary weapon used by the Byzantine navy. Remember the wildfire from Game of Thrones? It’s basically that. The name felt pretty appropriate for a sea-dwelling dragon that breathes fire.

The black nargacuga, Xyrafiptera cervarius. Its name means “razor-winged deer-hunter” in Latin, a combination of physical descriptors and behavior. It also sounds rad as hell.

And then…we have those names.

The disufiroa, Apparentia absurda. You can take a wild guess what that translates to. I mean, just look at this thing. It’s got weird, inverted, spike-things on its chest. No idea what the fuck those are for.

The harudomerugu, Retentio incredulitatis. Its name is the closest I could get to “suspension of disbelief” in Latin. By now you might have noticed that scientific names are basically my way of bullying the Frontier monsters, because seriously, what the hell, Capcom?

The baruragaru, Stercusanctum currite. Okay, so this one isn’t me taking the piss out of the Frontier design team, because I actually like this monster. Its name is based on my reaction when I first saw the G3 trailer: Jesus Christ, what is that thing? The baruragaru was given the dubious honor of being named “holy shit, run,” because if I saw that thing in real life I’d be trying to put as many doors, walls, and preferably continents between it and myself as possible.

The great jaggi, Magnaraptor ebrius. Also known as the “drunken great thief.” Full disclosure: I’m a big fan of NCHProductions and wanted to sneak in a fun reference to their videos. Whenever they animate the great jaggi it’s always drunk, so I named it in honor of its alcoholism.

The pariapuria, Haustranguis amphibious. Its name means “amphibious bucket dragon” in Latin, and there’s a reason for that. You see, The Encyclopedia wasn’t just intended as a fun creative exercise, but as a learning tool for people interested in zoological classification. In taxonomy there’s this thing called a wastebasket taxon—when a species is incertae sedis, or of uncertain placement, it might get dumped into a poly- or paraphyletic taxon. Academically, this is what’s known as “this thing is weird and I don’t know where it goes, so for now I’m putting it in time out.” When I first tried to classify the pariapuria I couldn’t really figure out what it was related to: The tigrexes? The nargas? Neither? And then it hit me: I didn’t have to have an answer. Instead, I decided to put it in a wastebasket taxon. It’s meant to be a nod to the harrows of IRL taxonomy, and just how much of a clusterfuck it can be sometimes. As for why it’s called “bucket dragon,” and not “basket dragon,” well. I couldn’t exactly find a translation for “basket” in Latin, so I asked myself, “Okay, what’s the next best thing?” And thus we have bucket dragon.
