and a few years down the line, their luck did turn around. they were delighted to find out that they were expecting again and, to their relief, harper was just as delighted to be a big sister. she helped them fingerpaint the nursery, drew up a list of names they could use with her best box of crayons and would insist on reading a bedtime story to the bump before either of her parents could read a bedtime story to her. 

the only trouble came when the new little bundle of joy arrived and, despite harper’s wishes for a sister, turned out to be boy. kieran and jo were overjoyed, of course, but harper cried for most of his first day outside of the womb. when kieran was eventually able to coax her over to at least look at her little brother though, and she was able to see that he was, in fact, just as cute as a little sister would have been and would love her just as much too, she began to warm up to the idea of having him around. after all, for such a tiny guy, sawyer did a pretty great job at making their family feel complete.

Let me jump off my soapbox and back on the subject matter of a great American Military (fought in WWII and was wounded in the 1944 D-Day invasion) Hero, Civil Rights and Attorney Johnny Jones, Sr. now Gone with the Makani at his spoiled rotten old age of 102. YES HI SO ABOUT ALL THIS

I realized I post a lot of stuff without much background to it. If you follow me elsewhere (Facebook, Twitter, IG, or DeviantArt [bless your heart if you follow me on DeviantArt, that’s a rabbit hole if there ever was one]) then you may be marginally familiar with my work, but probably a lot of you aren’t. So! Here’s the Sparknotes version:

AUTHOR!

I do things made of words!

My debut series is the Creatures of Light trilogy, made up of Woodwalker (2016), Ashes to Fire (2017), and Creatures of Light (2018), published by Harper Voyager, the Sci-Fi/Fantasy imprint of Harper Collins. I also have two other series in the works that I sometimes post concept sketches from.

Most of my books can be described as fantasy-adventures for nature nerds, and they tend to blur the lines between YA and Epic Fantasy. My characters are generally in their 20s, which exiles them from YA shelves, but the adventures they have and the nature of their stories have a very YA feel.

Books that have influenced mine are Megan Whalen Turner’s Queen’s Thief series (my undying favorite—but you knew that already), Tamora Pierce’s heroine adventures, and Lord of the Rings. Which is to say, there’s a lot of political intrigue, double-crossing, epic journeys, wild landscapes, and many, many mighty women with a spectrum of abilities, personalities, and strengths.

I draw the shape lines!

I work as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer, doing everything from book covers, children’s books, logos, and whatever else people bring me. I illustrate my own covers and interior fantasy maps, and I put up scads of work here and on my other social media outlets. I usually work digitally in Photoshop, but I also love watercolors, inks, and plain old pencil.

Big influences on my art are Lois Van Baarle (loish), Claire Hummel (shoomlah), and Katie Shanahan (ktshy). Older influences include Makani and Tealin, back in them Harry Potter days.

PARK RANGER!

I get chased by charismatic megafauna and wear a silly hat!

During the summers, I work as a seasonal park ranger for the National Park Service. This is what my official background is in—I have two degrees in Parks and Protected Area Management, and I conducted my Master’s research with the NPS. I’ve split my time between Yellowstone and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks, but I’m always casting my net around as the summers get closer.

My time in the national parks always inspires my work. I love writing ranger characters, natural phenomena, and wildlife encounters, and much of my work has conservation and climate change undercurrents.

SO WHAT NOW?

Honestly, I joined Tumblr because I needed a place to nerd over Thick as Thieves. But I quickly realized that of all my social media feeds, this is the best home for my fan art, so expect a lot of that. I also draw my characters a lot and sometimes post progress videos.

I love answering asks about writing, drawing, or park rangering, and I love seeing work by other creators. So please don’t hesitate to say hi!

pregnancy was not easy in any sense of the word. but after a long, arduous journey, the reward made it all worthwhile. harper made the sun shine brighter, she made flowers bloom and even when she cried, it still felt like the world was smiling at her. kieran and jo still weren’t too fond of the sleepless nights, but when she settled and gazed up at them with those big eyes filled with wonder and curiosity they couldn’t comprehend, they fell in love with her all over again.  every day they found new ways to love her and improve as her parents, but one thing stayed true from the moment that she was brought into their world: it was a much better place for having her in it.

years passed by and although they had their challenges, they were far outweighed by the joy that harper brought into their lives. and she didn’t just give them an excuse to break out the kiddie pool again; being her parents gave kieran and jo more of an incentive than ever to actually grow up and be responsible. sure they still goofed off and ate pb&js instead of casseroles, but instead of clinging on to the naivety of their past, they welcomed the maturity this part of their life introduced. they wanted harper to be proud of them when they went to her parent-teacher conferences or cheered her on from the sidelines of her first sports day. but for all the time they spent working on themselves, they spent ten times more with harper, helping her to discover the world and all the beauty in it. she gave them a purpose in life and everything from her giggle to her sunhat made them realise how lucky they were to be her parents. she was such a happy little girl, but they were even happier to have her in their lives.

days rolled by, which turned into weeks, then months and soon years were passing the seymour family by at an almost alarming speed. just when they felt as though they were getting the hang of parenting, jo and kieran would find harper and sawyer growing up overnight and entering a whole new phase of life that brought a whole new set of challenges with it. but listening to harper tap away on her keyboard or watching sawyer’s curls bounce as he nodded along to stories in awe made all the tantrums and breakdowns seem worth it. and besides, they always knew that they had each other to fall back on and could count on them to pick each other back up again.

and, speaking of stories, whilst kieran and jo’s days of raiding labs and uncovering smalltown mysteries were well in the past, kieran couldn’t help but reminisce a little and spin out tales of his glory days...

kieran: so the evil plant was dead, the bad guys got taken away and the town was saved from a lifetime of having their minds controlled. we became heroes, of course getting big, shiny medals for being so brave and the rest, as they say, buddy, is history!

sawyer: again! again! 

jo: i don’t think so, buddy. at least not tonight, anyway. we’ve got to run you a bath before bedtime.

sawyer: again at bedtime?

jo: (chuckles) well alright, if you’re not sick of it yet. 

kieran: how could he get sick of the best story to ever exist?

jo: if you tell him it at every opportunity possible, that’s how. especially if you keep giving yourself more and more superpowers. 

kieran: are you implying that i don’t have superpowers?

jo: well excuse me if my age is messing with my memory, but i don’t seem to recall you cutting out a door with your laser vision. 

kieran: touche.

jo: that’s what i thought. now come on, sawyer, let’s get that hair of yours washed so daddy can come up with a superpower for me before bedtime.

life in strangerville became idyllic; balmy heat and sunny days made even the most mundane of tasks enjoyable. chores were accomplished a little more quickly now that harper was around because she often needed more attention than the laundry, but when she was so fond of soup she was more than happy to keep him occupied in between his walks. 

they didn’t always feel like they were on the right tracks, but jo and kieran were finally starting to feel like they could do this whole parenting thing, or at least muddle their way through it. they actually felt like a real family now and reaching that conclusion gave them the confidence they needed to push on and keep trying.
