The Sand Snakes
[Most characters cut; those who remained were changed to some extent]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obara Sand - Prince Oberyn’s first born; A prickly, hot-tempered woman, long legged, calloused hands, rat brown hair tied up in a knot, and nearing 30. When her father came for her in Oldtown he threw down a spear and told her to pick her weapon, to which she chose the spear, leaving her prostitute mother behind whom not long after drank herself to death
Nymeria Sand “Lady Nym” - She is 25, slim and slender, with long jet black hair usually pulled back in a braid, which pronounces her widows peak. Her mother was a Volantene highborn woman of the noblest blood. Whilst Nym stole all the beauty from Obara she was no less deadly and has been described as vengeful
Tyene Sand - Born from a Septa, she is described as having golden hair, deep blue eyes, dimples that bloom on her cheeks when she smiles, fair of skin, and her voice is both gentle and sweet. Though her hands were not calloused as with Obara, they were just as deadly due to her adeptness for poisons. She and Princess Arianne Martell are as close as sisters, having grown up together, and even bedded the same man together whom took their maidenheads
Sarella Sand “Alleras the Sphinx” - The daughter of the Summer Islander Captain of the Feathered Kiss. She has light brown skin and an insatiable curiosity which strikes up a love for Oldtown in her. It is theorized that she is currently in the Citadel disguised as Alleras the Sphinx (Alleras is Sarella spelled backwards, both characters are half Dornish and half Southern Islander) studying to become a Maester
Elia Sand “Lady Lance/El” - The oldest child of The Red Viper and Ellaria Sand, named after her late aunt Princess Elia Martell. She has her father’s eyes and also wears her hair in a braid. She and Obella are described as worshiping their elder sisters, such as they are worshipped by their younger sisters. Her weapon of choice is without question a lance
Obella Sand - the second daughter of the Prince and his long time paramour, she is described as a terror in the pools of the Water Garden, and is currently a Cupbearer to the Castellan of Sunspear, Manfrey Martell
Dorea Sand - She, like most of her siblings, share the shape of her fathers eyes and is named after her Uncle and the Prince of Sunspear and Dorne, Doran Martell
Loreza Sand “Loree” - The youngest child has just turned 7 and is accompanying her mother Ellaria to Hellholt, which is the seat of Lord Harmen Uller, her grandfather

Shae had told her that this Ellaria worshiped some Lysene love goddess. “She was almost a whore when he found her, m’lady,” her maid confided, “and now she’s near a princess.”
To me, this short passage is a sad reflection on Shae and her relationship with Tyrion. Ellaria probably had at least a decent relationship with her father, Lord Uller, given her return there in TWOW with her youngest daughter and Arianne's assumption that Lord Harmen would be wroth at the imprisonment of Ellaria and her daughters; as an aristocrat’s daughter in a land generally less prejudiced against bastards, Ellaria likely grew up with a certain level of relative privilege. By contrast, Shae grew up not only on the bottom rung of the Westerosi social scale, as an impoverished commoner, but also sexually abused by her own father; Shae had decided to run away rather than suffer abuse at his hands, and certainly had no family home to return to if and when fortune turned against her later. Further, Shae may not have set out in life to be a sex worker, but as a female, lowborn, presumably unskilled, virtually orphaned, and homeless teenager, her options to sustain herself were very few; by contrast, whatever Ellaria may have envisioned as the path of her life while she was growing up (and again, that relative, aristocratically linked privilege would likely have provided her sufficient cushion against needing to worry about the future), her relationship with Oberyn certainly appears to have been mutually consensual and desired and based on attraction, rather than desperation on Ellaria's part to sustain herself. Although Ellaria was never formally Oberyn's wife, she occupied the position of de facto spouse, which Oberyn publicly acknowledged: Oberyn did not hesitate to introduce Ellaria as "mine own paramour" in the litany of Dornish aristocrats come to King's Landing with him, and affirmed to Tyrion that his and Ellaria's relationship was still romantically and sexually passionate, without any cooling on his part. By contrast, Tyrion increasingly diminished his relationship with Shae: hiding her away, stopping his payments to her, giving her more responsibilities as a maid, and secretly planning to marry her to a hedge knight with no fortune of his own. Small wonder, in turn, that Shae might have been jealous of Ellaria, and consequently eager to disparage her by comparison; Ellaria’s good fortune only highlighted how little Shae had or could rely on if anything happened to Tyrion.

Jon Snow's Living Situation in ASOIAF
A lot of people take for granted that it was "unusual" for Jon Snow to be raised at Winterfell, so I tried to gather information on as many natural born children mentioned in ASOIAF and related materials to see if that was true.
And it seems not to be, even in the South (outside of Dorne, even). The children born out of wedlock to highborn parents seem to be kept with them or nearby.
This is admittedly a small sample size (around 80 characters, and I didn't go too deep into it so I'm missing at least some), but it's not like this is real history, and the fact that Jon's situation is not unusual seeming from what we're shown in the books just adds to the idea that people's impressions of what is normal are not the truth of what is normal.
Northern Bastards that lived/probably lived with their families (other than Jon himself):
Brandon Snow (Torrhen Stark’s brother, most likely lived at Winterfell)
Sara Snow (Rickon Stark’s daughter during the Dance, if she existed definitely lived at Winterfell)
Dacey, Alysane, Lyra, Jorelle, and Lyanna Mormont (Maege Mormont’s daughters, father(s) unknown and most likely not married to Maege)
Denys Snow (Bastard of Barrowtown, bastard of House Dustin)
Lonnel Snow (Son of Brandon Stark from Daeron II’s reign, possibly the origin of House Cassel)
Timothy Snow (the Bastard of Flint’s Finger, presumably lived with his Flint relatives)
Northern Bastards who were acknowledged and fostered elsewhere in the North:
Larence Snow (Halys Hornwood’s son, fostered with the Glovers)
Other Bastards who seem to have lived with/near their families:
Addison Hill (Bastard of Cornfield during the Conquest)
Alys River (House Strong, a wet nurse at Harrenhal)
Aurane Waters (Bastard of Driftmark, Lord Monford Velaryon’s brother)
Bastard of Blackhaven (House Dondarrion during the conquest)
Bastard of Harrenhal (House Lothston during Daeron II’s reign)
Bryden Rivers (Bloodraven), Gwenys Rivers, Mya Rivers
Cedrik Storm (Bastard of Bronzegate, House Buckler bastard, fought Barristan Selmy)
Daemon Sand (Bastard of Godsgrace, son of Ryon Allyrion)
Daemon Waters (aka Daemon Blackfyre, son of Princess Daena and Aegon IV)
Falia Flowers (daughter of Humfrey Hewitt, though made a servant)
Joy Hill (Gerion Lannister’s daughter)
Lynora Hill (daughter of Ser Jason Lannister, works at Casterly Rock)
Obara Sand, Nymeria Sand, Tyene Sand, Sarella Sand, Elia Sand, Obella Sand, Dorea Sand, and Loreza Sand (the Sand Snakes)
Orys Baratheon (rumored bastard of Aerion Targaryen)
Red Robb Rivers (the Bowman of Raventree, bastard of House Blackwood)
Rolland Storm (Bastard of Nightsong, House Caron)
Ronald Storm (son of Ser Ronnet Connington)
Ronard Storm (House Durrandon, usurped his brother King Morden II)
Tom Flowers (Bastard of Bitterbridge, from House Caswell during the Dance)
Tyler Hill (Bastard of Lannisport, son of Lord Lyman during Maegor’s reign)
Tyrion Tanner (Lollys Stokeworth’s son)
Walda Rivers (great-granddaughter of Walder Frey)
Walder Rivers (Walder Frey’s oldest bastard son)
Walys (Maester at Winterfell under Rickard Stark, while becoming a Maester might normally be seen as sending the child away, he was the son of a Hightower and an Archmaester)
Wex Pyke (son of Sargon Botley)
(I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume if someone is called “Bastard of [seat of their family]” that they lived with their family, as Jon Snow is the “Bastard of Winterfell”)
Other Bastards who possibly lived with their families (at least for a time)
Blackshield (Bastard of Uplands, possibly of House Mullendore)
Ellaria Sand (daughter of Harmen Uller)
Garrett and Garse Flowers (Mace Tyrell’s first cousins, presumably lived with their father)
Harry Rivers (Bastard of Bracken, son of Lord Jonos Bracken)
Shiera Seastar (daughter of Aegon IV, not really confirmed where she lived her early years I don't think, though most likely in King’s Landing)
Bastards definitely not raised at home:
Aegor Rivers (Bittersteel, would have been raised in King’s Landing but Daeron and Aemon forced Aegon to send him away)
Cotter Pyke (Night’s Watch member, most likely did not live with his highborn relatives)
Edric Storm (Robert Baratheon’s son, technically was raised at his family’s seat in Storm’s End, but not at the Red Keep)
Gendry Waters (Robert Baratheon’s son)
Mya Stone (Robert Baratheon’s daughter)
All the rest of Robert Baratheon's kids
Notable bastards whose situations are not at all comparable to Jon’s:
Ramsey Snow (Roose Bolton’s son, a product of a First Night rape)
Benedict I Justman (a Blackwood/Bracken mix, so basically an abomination in the eyes of the gods lol)
Addam and Alyn Velaryon (Lord Corlys Velaryon’s probable sons, most likely purposefully hidden)
Franklyn Flowers (mother was a small folk raped by Fossoways of Cider Hall)
Glendon Flowers (could not prove parentage, claimed to be Quentyn Ball’s son with a camp follower)
Jayne and Jon Waters (Alyn Velyaron and Elaena Targaryen’s children, Alyn died when they were young but had planned to marry Elaena)
Joffrey, Tommen, and Myrcella (obviously)
All of Lyonel Hightower and Samantha Tarly’s children (weren’t allowed to marry, but had children anyway)
Named bastards we don’t have enough information on:
Addam Rivers (briefly a river king)
Humfrey Waters (Commander of the City Watch)
Jafer Flowers (Night’s Watch member)
Mervyn Flowers (King Aegon III KG)
Robert Flowers (former LC of the KG)
Robin Hill (former LC of NW)
Ser Samuel Stone (Runestone master-at-arms)
Tristan Rivers (Golden Company)

‘Mech post in coming!
But first! I took a break from mech posting to play my other hyper fixation, A Song of Ice and Fire miniatures game. Which I have now convinced two of my best friends to play through bribery and silly games.
Tumblr media
Cause they are goofy and fun I haven’t taken photos of them in my light box just on my work table.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am most proud of my commander, Harmen Uller for my Martell army. It’s such a fun quick game and it leads to really silly moments like an archer standing off against a giant.
Tumblr media
It’s just a real nice game and it’s a way to express my ASOIAF hyper obsession

Yeah it’s disgusting how people think that Alys being older than Aemond means it isn’t possible for her to be his victim. Aemond just has a thing for older women (according to the book) and chose her. But tbh even that isn’t really certain because she was said to look “way younger than her years” so it’s possible she didn’t really look like she was 40 years old anyways. I just find it really hard to believe that Alys “bewitched” Aemond. Aemond was the one with all the power and after he killed her family she was just a landless bastard. I think Alys was demonized because she was a bastard of unknown origin, possibly even having a lowborn mother, which might have made the historians paint her as a witch because they didn’t like that a royal prince chose her as his consort instead of a “proper” Highborn lady.
I lean toward Alys having seer powers, even if just the ones that could easily be mistaken as "very strong feelings" from time to time. But no “great” powers like Melisandre at all. That being said, what you point out and suggest about her parentage still works in a way. It would explain another way that persons around her judge her so readily.
Septon Eustace says this about Aegon II before he is coronated:
Though the good septon admits Prince Aegon was with a paramour when he was found, he insists the girl was the daughter of a wealthy trader, and well cared for besides.
(Fire and Blood; The Blacks and the Greens)
It would be worse for her if her noble parent was a woman while her lowborn or nonnoble parent was a man. She probably would not have been able to stay at the castle at all if her noble parent were a woman.
We remember that acknowledging a bastard is in the power of the male parent, not the female one. Since men are invested with sociopolitical power over a household and over women in general (women are customarily leading or fighting wars in the event that they have no male relatives or they are doing it for their too young sons, debilitated father's, etc.), and a woman cheating on her husband and having a child reflects on the man worse than the other way around. He’d be labeled a cuckold, unable to control his house and wife, lose public respect, etc. Whereas a noblewoman getting cheated on is seen as normal, expected, or inevitable.
Also, Oberyn Martell still was able to have a life-long paramour in Ellaria Sand, who was born from a noble male parent, Harmen Uller, the lord of Hellholt and head of the Ullers. His other daughters mother's were various women he either just had a few sexy times with or had less meaningful relationships with. More so the first.

Golden Blood - Personajes Canon - Dorne

Any headcanons on Harmen Uller?
First off, his grandkids call him "Abuelo Harmy" and he encourages this. It's perfect on so many levels in his eyes.
He's always looked way older than he actually is. (Ulwyck tries to mock him for this. Harmen doesn't give a shit.)
He loves his family, and is more than willing to show it, and will shower affection on his daughter and granddaughters every chance he gets.
This affection only applies to those he considers his family. He is not cruel to those that do not deserve it, but neither is he kind.
Is considered to be the ideal Lord of the Hellholt, with everything that implies.
Has had no real luck with relationships. First was his relationship with Avaya, Ellaria's mother. They did genuinely love each other, but long story short they could not get past some roadblocks. Harmen blames himself for this.
Second off, he was actually almost betrothed to a woman a couple years after that. They were good friends, and did not expect anything but friendship. The issue was that said women did not believe that she would be a good Lady of the Hellholt, and so they amicably split and found her another match.
Officially, Ulwyck is his heir. Unofficially, it depends on what the situation is when Harmen dies. As Ulwyck has zero desire to marry and produce an heir, there are provisions in place for either Ellaria or one of her children to take over instead. Harmen is perfectly okay with this, especially as it means he sees his grandkids often.
He's tried to breach the subject of legitimizing Ellaria several times. Ellaria has refused for her own reasons. Harmen is frustrated by this, but tries not to let it show.
He gets along far too well with Oberyn. Doran worries about this sometimes.
He likes woodcarving. Unfortunately, he doesn't have easy access to wood because he lives in the middle of the desert. He always asks for some for his nameday.
He tried to give all of his granddaughters sand steeds before they could walk. Ellaria had to tell him to wait every single time.

House Targaryen Allies: Fancasting House Martell --> Coco Jack Gillies as Loreza Sand
“ ‘Doom and death are coming,’ Ellaria Sand had warned them, before she took her own leave from Prince Doran.  ‘It is time for my little snakes to scatter, the better to survive the carnage.’ Ellaria was returning to her father's seat at Hellholt.  With her went her daughter Loreza, who had just turned seven.”
Ellaria seems to have a close bond with her father, unlike what we see for many fathers of bastard girls elsewhere in Westeros. I’m sure he dotes on the youngest of her daughters too.

In recent years, Talia had spent more of her time among the walls of the Red Keep and the misty shores of Dragonstone than she had the Hellholt. Such was the tradeoff when asked to be a lady-in-waiting to one of the Princesses of the Iron Throne. Such a position had afforded her a number of opportunities.
She had made a staunch friend in the Crown Princess, had even made an ally of sorts in the new Warden of the North. Such things would be of benefit when the Hellholt passed to her. Surely, such a time was quite the distance from then. Still, such things had to be considered.
Father had been cross with her after her latest escapade. Talia didn't understand why. Talia had long been capable of defending herself, had excelled in horsemanship and the bow from a young age. With a sword, she was all the better. She supposed having his youngest appear upon the bloody battlefield that the Stepstones had been turned into had been shocking. All the same, she had brought aid with her... had helped to form the plan that had saved the soldiers upon the islands and felled the rebellion that had been looming as a threat.
Harmen Uller was not a man to be crossed. Talia had known so since a tender age. But, Talia was not a young woman to be crossed either. When her father had ordered her home and then threatened to leave her among the walls of the Hellholt, she had protested. And, she'd won.
Now, Talia strolled about the apartments that the Crown had offered to her family, readying for the tourney to honor the Crown Princess' name day. Talia had not seen the Princess since arriving, nor had she seen sign of her dragonmount. She wondered if the woman was even present in the capital.
Passing by her bed, she snatched up a pillow and tossed it at her eldest sister. When it was thrown back at her, she dodged it with a laugh and a smirk. "You should be getting ready," Talia reminded her. "Prince Oberyn has asked that we sit with Princess Daenerys during the tourney. You haven't forgotten, have you?"

Everything about this visit was grating on her nerves. Coatli's already short patience for fools was rapidly wearing thin. With each passing moment, she was more sure she did the right thing to accompany her sister in her trip. Coatli had yet to meet anyone trustworthy.
At the moment, more importantly, Coatli was bored. She did not want to mingle with anyone outside of her room but she was not one meant to be kept indoors. She glared at the orange in her hands as she peeled it off and popped a slice of the citrus into her mouth.
A pillow hit the back of her head, making her turn and glare at her other sister, one who would not hear about being left behind in Dorne. "What was that for?" she huffed, picking the pillow and throwing it back at Talia.

Do you have any speculation about the relationship of Ellaria Sand and her father? I'm curious of her situation in WoW beeing "retired to her father's seat". Is it common for bastards to be raised by their highborn family in Dorne, than in the rest of Westeros? Or could it be that Ellaria's situation is rare? Thank you very much for your blog, it's a treasure!
Dorne has different customs and attitudes towards bastards than the rest of Westeros.
They are not greatly concerned if a child is born in wedlock or out of it, especially if the child is born to a paramour. Many lords—and even some ladies—have paramours, chosen for love and lust rather than for breeding or alliance. –The World of Ice and Fire
I figure Ellaria’s mother was probably Harmen Uller’s paramour, his official mistress. I don’t know if she was raised at Hellholt, though the fact that she’s “returning to her father’s seat” does suggest she lived there, and I really don’t see any reason to think otherwise. Especially since we have the example of Daemon Sand, the Bastard of Godsgrace, who Oberyn introduces to Tyrion in the same sentence as his father, Ryon Allyrion. And though Shae says Ellaria was “almost a whore” when she met Oberyn, I figure that’s probably just wishful thinking on her behalf. (As Ellaria’s position – the publicly acknowledged paramour of a wealthy, handsome, and powerful man – would have been Shae’s dream job.)
Furthermore, what we know of Harmen Uller suggests he and Ellaria get along well:
I have a raven, Arianne thought, triumphantly, but who to send her to?[…] Arianne finally decided that she had but two real hopes: Harmen Uller, Lord of Hellholt, and Franklyn Fowler, Lord of Skyreach and Warden of the Prince’s Pass.Half of the Ullers are half-mad, the saying went, and the other half are worse. Ellaria Sand was Lord Harmen’s natural daughter. She and her little ones had been locked away with the rest of the Sand Snakes. That would have made Lord Harmen wroth, and the Ullers were dangerous when wroth. Too dangerous, perhaps. The princess did not want to put any more lives in danger.
–AFFC, The Princess in the Tower
So, Arianne thinks that Harmen would be angered at the imprisonment of his bastard daughter and grandchildren. Harmen was also present among Oberyn’s group of Dornish lords that went to King’s Landing, with no mention of any unease he’d have with Ellaria… and he was also present at the welcoming dinner for Balon Swann in Sunspear, again with no problems. It’s very likely that Ellaria and her daughter Loreza accompanied her father on his trip back to the Hellholt.
So, Ellaria is probably going home – that is, where she was born as Harmen Uller’s natural daughter, and where she was raised. (Hopefully TWOW will give us a few more details.) It is an unusual situation for the rest of Westeros, but not for Dorne. I hope that helps!
