HOW I LIVE NOW (2013) Grade: C
Felt messy, the plot was all over the place. Felt like they squeezed in 3 different movie ideas into 1 w a narrator trying to make sense of it all.

W A T C H I N G
Saw it a few years ago. Wanted to watch it with my mom ever since.
Damn good movie. Speculative fiction about a WWIII, but with realism. Not some sci-fi mad max type of thing.
But it's a very emotionally heavy movie about civilian family caught up in a future world war. It's harrowing in that there have been instances of things that happen in the plot to real people and families in the real world wars in the past. Just lifted into a contemporary setting.
I never watched it with my dad for that reason. He witnessed things that were terribly unspeakable in his childhood in WWII. He lived with lifelong PTSD.
He could watch Soldier movies or action movies that were taking place in WWI & II, but I just didn't think this movie was safe for his mental wellness.
So if you've been in a war like in Ukraine, or you have family members that lived through a war as a civilian. I wouldn't recommend this film, or if you have PTSD from events like that.
It's not the imagery or violence, so much as the emotional weight of the characters and what they witness. Even some parts that are implied are almost more painful and heavy.
So be aware of that.
I mean it's a brilliant depiction. Really makes you think.
Just that I've been privy to my father's experiences, the movie caused me a bit of anxiety and light panic attack feelings. Like I'm edging toward a panic attack.
I just thought an FYI about it was important with the current state of affairs, and if I'm anxious from this movie then others might be.

something something the juxtoposition of the "barbie outfits" in the margot robbie vogue photoshoot vs the costumes in the actual barbie movie; Harley Quinn's outfits in the og suicide squad vs birds of prey; margot robbie's dual celebrity persona as sex symbol for men vs icon of empowerment to women, her body at the centre of discussions on gendered fantasies. also something something projection of male sexual desire onto/creation out of symbols of girlhood (barbie as posable doll harley as daddy's little monster) the absolute rejection of self-objectification in both these (woman directed) films and in this essay i will not but others have and will and i can't wait to read every single one
