When Ness was young, he had been a very promising police officer. He was quick to work his way up from a simple detective to a Lieutenant. He was a hardcharging coworker and respected.

But at some point, over the years...something had...changed. He had changed.

He was suddenly very reserved. Quiet. Impatient, almost aggressive. And his coworkers would start smelling alcohol whenever hes around.

Some speculated it was connected to his past since he gets really repellent when asked personal questions but for most of them he simply became a nutcase and blamed his obsession with the old Freddy case for his change.

"He's spending too much time with the old files. No wonder he lost his mind."

None of them know he's personally involved in this case....

His reputation as maniac only seems confirmed when he one day looses control and threatens a civilian with his gun. This plus other incidents and his habit to drink before he goes to work lead to his demotion.

So he isn't realky in the best place when he meets Mike who's one day sitting opposite of him on the interrogation room...
