[Chris walks in on a conversation with Haraldo and Alex]

Haraldo: …just try harder next time, okay kiddo? I’d hate to have to find a replacement… 

Alex: Y- yes sir… 

Haraldo: Good boy. 

[Haraldo ruffles Alex’s hair a bit before leaving.]

[Chris snuffs out a cigarette and throws it away before speaking.]

Chris: Why do you let him treat you like that? 

[Alex tenses at the sound of his voice.]

Alex: What are you doing here? Where’s mom?

Chris: Guess.

Alex: High? 

Chris: Passed out drunk, actually. 

Alex: Same difference. 

[Chris snorts, before waving Alex over.]

Chris: Come on, we’re leaving.

[Chris starts walking, and Alex quickly grabs his stuff and runs over to follow]

[They enter the car. It’s silent for a moment.]

Chris: So… what was that all about?

Alex: Huh? 

Chris: You and Haraldo. He was saying something about ‘trying harder’?  

Alex: Tch. It’s none of your business. Besides, since when do you even care? 

Chris: Wow. Okay. Well if you're going to a bitch about it, I guess I’ll shut up. 

Alex: …No swearing. 

Chris: Alex, you’re twelve. I’m not censoring myself around you. 

Alex: You’re a jerk. 

Chris: Oh stop whining, It’s not my job to baby you.

Alex: Yeah… Well… I never ASKED you to, you- AHHH WHY AREN’T YOU TURNING

[cut to the outside of the car, Chris makes a left turn at the last second.]

[They’re both silent for a second, before Chris turns into a parking lot.]

Alex: Wait… where are we going? 

Chris: Smoke break. Wait in the car.

Alex: but- 

[Chris exits the car without another word.]  

…

[A few minutes pass, and Chris returns.]

[He starts driving again.]

Alex: …It’s like you’re turning into mom. 

[Chris’s hands tighten on the wheel.] 

Chris: …Shut up.

But it’s also a morning when we read in the headlines that Texas has just passed its latest barbaric state law, this one making it illegal for trans kids…

whose name for a long time I thought was Haraldo because I didn’t make the connection between the person I heard people speak about on American TV and the person whose name I had seen written down

(Geralt is also not pronounced like the English name Gerald but I saw it written down long before I heard it said and assumed it sounded like the similar-looking name I was more familiar with so here we are)
