Hakuoki Drama CD - Hijikata Biyori Track 19 Eng translation

For some reason, I had the part of that song with Kodo and Kazama's final confrontation from Kazama-hen in my head today despite not having listened to it in quite a while... guess something's telling me that I should go watch Kazama-hen instead of Shinkai Hijikata-hen, which I've only seen the switching camera version of? 😂

Anyway, this is this week's translation!

Hijikata: Harada and Shinpachi went out earlier. They were probably going to Shimabara anyway. There even enjoying themselves/fooling around during the day.

Toudou: No... damn it... those two left me behind!

Hijikata: Oh? What's wrong?

Toudou: No, it, it's nothing!

Hijikata: Is that so. Hey, Heisuke, quickly sit down.

Toudou: Ah! Right! Let me bring those two back.

Sannan: Bring back... is it?

Toudou: Seriously, Sano-san and Shinpach-san, they're really troublesome. Going to Shimabara in the middle of the day.

Hijikata: I guess you're going to go with them too.

Toudou: No way! How could that be! After all, I'm the one always stopping those two.

Sannan: Toudou-kun?

Toudou: That's right, but no matter how much I try to stop them, they still won't listen.

Sannan: I see, that's quite a problem.

Hijikata: It's amazing that you, who usually likes to mess around, would actually stop them.

Toudou: That's right. I mean, those two get drunk and cause commotions in broad daylight.

Sannna: What do you mean by commotions?

Toudou: It's something they always do. Things like Sano-san boasting about the scar on his stomach and Shinpach-san bragging about his arm muscles. Ah, the other day/a few days ago, they were arm wrestling and the loser had to drink sake! It was really terrible.

Hijikata: What, you must been drinking with them too.

Toudou: Ah...

Sannan: Although I understand how you feel, it really is not commendable for a Shinsengumi executive to get drunk and then cause trouble in broad daylight.

Toudou: Ah, how should I put it, those two people insisted…

Sannan: If they insisted, then you should have refused even more. Rejecting other is a type of strength, Toudou-kun.

Hijikata: Be a bit more mature. Heisuke.

Toudou: What, why are you're saying that just to me! Are those two much better/Aren't those two more outrageous? Anyway, I have to bring Sano-san and Shinpach-san back!

Hijikata: In that case, there's no problem. The two of them didn't go out. T

Toudou: Huh?

Sannan: Thanks to Todou-kun, we now have a good idea of what Harada-kun and Nagakura-kun were secretly doing behind our backs.

Toudou: How could that be――what the hell were Sano-san, Shinpach-san doing!

Hijikata: Those guys went to that person's room. Harada brought tangerines.

Sannan: It's not right for two guys to barge into a girl's room.

Hijikta: Isn’t that better than going out to drink during the day?

Toudou: Huh? That's not better, that's a much bigger problem than going to Shimabara! What's with that excuse! Those two…!

Hijikata: Seriously. When will he start behaving like an adult/he grow up/get more mature? I can't help but think he's entirely driven by his emotions.

Sannan: Yes, that's true. But, isn't that Toudou-kun's strength?

Recs for Kinky BL Manga

I made a short rec list for a friend who wanted to read BDSM themed BL that's not dom/sub universe, and I thought I could share it on Tumblr as well. These stories depict the characters (mostly) knowingly and consensually engaging with different kinks, but bad BDSM etiquette, dubcon etc can still occur. I've provided links whenever an official English translation is available. Please support the artists by reading from official sources if possible.

Kinbaku / Shibari

Suji: May I Tie Up the Yakuza This story tarts out pretty horny, as the MC, a professional rope artis, just wants to find a hot top he can tie up while they have sex. Although there's plenty of spiciness, this manga is also actually really touching. I just loved the ”pitiful yakuza with a tragic past and a kind, loving rope artist” couple dynamic. Overall a very healing story, and it takes shibari seriously and treats it with respect. Tapon: Entwined In Red Two classmates, a "normal" nice guy who is secretly turned on by ropes, and a seductive son of a yakuza who is forced to sell his body, get entwined in this story that is also ultimately about healing. Shibari is present more as an aesthetic; the couple engages in much lighter bondage in the actual sex scenes. Masochistic Main Character

akabeko: 蝶と花の関係性 / Chou to hana no kankeisei This workplace romance between a newbie worker who wants to be bossed around and humiliated and his senpai who's willing to indulge his whims is one of my all-time faves when it comes to kink themed BL. I especially love how their relationship also allows the seme character to take back his agency after being sexually abused when he was younger. Akabeko is a master at spicy scenes and this manga is no exception.

Yuitsu: REVERSE A police officer who gets turned on by dangerous situations is caught up in a fuck buddy situation with a dangerous guy who later turns out to be associated with the yakuza. Basically it's porn with some crime drama, the plot wasn't especially deep or memorable but still a hot, entertaining read like a lot of Yuitsu’s stories.

Humor & Comedy

Harada: 変愛 / Hen ai Can't make a kink-themed list without mentioning Harada. Hen ai consists of episodic stories about an idiot couple who do all kinds of scenes together including student/teacher cosplay, bondage, shaving etc. The seme character claims to be into "normal" sex at first but always get super carried away once the uke character eggs him on. I just love how they are also very affectionate with each other in their own silly way. The titular tankoubon only has one story about this couple but you can also find them in Harada's short story compilations Positive and Yajirushi.

Azuma Kaya: 桜田先輩改造計画 / Sakurada-senpai kaizou keikaku Yes, this is the same Azuma Kaya best known from The Scene of My Rumspringa. This story is much less serious, featuring a total S&M queen seme who tries to punish his idiot senpai at work but senpai gets waaay too into it. This was such a fun read, and I loved the constant flipping of the character dynamics, like how the seme character is an experienced dom but becomes a trembling mess when it comes to some stuff he's much less experienced with.

Serious & Melancholic

Ido Gihou: 夜はともだち / Yoru wa tomodachi A thoughtful, at times even sad story about a more vanilla guy who gets into a somewhat strange relationship with a guy who is a pretty hardcore masochist. The loneliness of trying to understand one another is the first thing that comes to mind from this manga for me, rather than the spicy scenes. This is probably one of the first BL manga where I encountered these themes handled in a more realistic/serious way, so in that way it could probably be called a classic?

Matsumoto Miecohouse: The Beautiful Greenness A recluse author MC with lousy eating habits and a cheerful greengrocer who wants to cook him healthy, delicious meals - and tease and degrade him in bed - make an unlikely pair in this 3 volume manga. Parts of the story are very uncomfortable to read, like the main character's homophobic remarks and the way he judges other people. But it's only through being forced to give up control and to face his own ”ugly” desires during sex that he can start to accept both himself and others more. Matsumoto Miecohouse always has unique, interesting stories even if their art might not look like much at first sight, so I definitely recommend checking this and their other stories out!

A summary of the release event of Sannan Hen DVD/Bluray

So, on the 30th, I went to the release event of the DVD/Bluray of Sannan Hen.

This is an official picture of the cast that went to the event.

From left to right: Hoshimoto Yuzuki (Kaoru), Tsukasa Taguchi (Yamazaki), Higuchi Yuuta (Heisuke), Teruma (Sannan), Kubota Hidetoshi (Hijikata), Kitamura Kento (Okita), Kawakami Shota (Harada).

They also sat in that order during the event, with Teruma being in the middle.

The event lasted roughly 1 hour with three sections. The first section just had introductions and some questions related to the musical. In the second section, the MC read up something and the cast responded to it (I barely understood anything in this section so the description will be short). In the third section, they played a music game.

Please note, my Japanese is awful so I may summarize or describe things inaccurately.

First section

I don't remember it very much but I will just list out the things I remember.

Hoshimoto has been a fan of Hakumyu for 7 years! She was contacted by her agent about taking part in Hakumyu.

It was Tsukasa's first time to take part in Hakumyu so he was rather new to it all.

Teruma had been doing it for a long time and he said the experience had always been noisy and loud lol. At some point, Teruma also said the crawling scene was super hard on his neck as he had to keep it up very high lol.

Later on, the MC asked a question: which scene made them the most nervous? (I think, I have shitty memories). Hoshimoto said it was the scene with Chizuru at the end. She worked with Shion a lot on that scene. Tsukasa said it was the dying scene. He said it hurt to fall suddenly down like that. Kawakami said it was the scene after Kondou's death, the character Harada had a lot of thoughts and feelings. Higuchi said it was the scene of him getting stabbed by Sannan lol. He said it was super hard and the timings of Teruma and him were off. Then he actually said a quote from the game and the musical, "本気で斬ってきたじゃねえか！” which means "Didn't you actually stab me!". Kitamura said that it was the scene when Okita fought to his death and finally got aided by Nagakura (there were some jokes about muscles that made everyone laugh but I didn't understand it). Kubota said that for him, it was the fight with the rasetsu with Kazama at the end. For Teruma, I could not understand his answer very well but I think his answer was the fight he had with Hijikata?

Second section:

Unfortunately, the only thing I could understand and remember from this section is Kawakami eating ramen at some point and smelling like garlic. He said he kept fearing people would smell garlic off him and that the wind would blow his garlic scent at other people.

Third section:

They played a music game. They all were given a sheet of paper with the list of musical numbers from the games. Some were surprised and said they didn't know the songs were given names lol and that there were so many songs.

The rule of the game was that there was a button in the middle of the stage, nearest to Teruma. Music from the songs would be played and the cast would have to listen to the song, reach out to the button when they recognized what the song was and then say the title of the song. The winner would be given a price and the loser would have to drink the ochimizu. Higuchi won (getting 3 songs correct, I think) and Tsukasa lost (getting no song correct at all).

It was kinda funny at the beginnning before the game started with the cast farther away from the button attempted to jokingly cheated by moving their seats closer (Kawakami, Kento and Hoshimoto). Teruma, the one nearest the button, actually moved his seat closer to the button lol. But then they all settled down. The game started, the music was on for like a few seconds before everyone rushed toward the button besides Teruma who was still sitting still. The song was M4: Ao de are (I think). It was Kubota who got it correct, I think (don't believe me, I have shitty memories).

Now I will just be listing off what I can remember. A song that was played was M5: Tada Kurayami yori. When the music first sounded out, everyone was confused af, including Teruma, but Higuchi was the only one who figured it out, pushed the button and got it correct. I was screaming internally at Teruma to get this song but he didn't lol. He then teased Teruma about it, because Teruma sang that song. Teruma then explained that he didn't recognize it because the song has so many versions. Higuchi even sang Tada Kurayami yori lol. Can I please have a Tada Kurayami yori Heisuke ver. please? That edgy won't fit the character at all but it will be fun to see Heisuke sing it lol.

After this, the next song was M24-1: En (which was the song of Kaoru while he was venting out his anger on Chizuru). Hoshimoto got it right, yay, and then explained it was because it was her song. Then Teruma once again got teased for failing to recognizing his own song lol.

After a few songs, M9-2: Imakage (Chizuru and Sannan's duet in the first act) was played, once again, Teruma failed completely to recognize it. This time, Higuchi and Kento were competing to say the name of the song. Higuchi got it incorrect and lost his turn (though he got it correct later on). Kento also got it incorrect. Later on, Teruma pushed the button, hesitated, looked at the paper without saying any name and finally got it correct after Higuchi literally pointed out the name of the song on the paper for him.

A few of the songs played in the quiz (in no order because my memory is awful) were M22: Tada Ichido no Toki (Kawamaki got this), and M18: Katani ni Komeyou - Yadori Neko (Kento got this, a true Souji guy). I think there were more? I just don't remember them.

The winning song was the last one, the MC said that it was worth 100 points. The song was M20: Rasetsu no Mirai ni and Higuchi got it, and thus, won the game.

He got the reward while poor Tsukasa had to drink the Ochimizu. The guy had never drunk it before. Teruma said a Sannan's quote from Live 3: 心臓繁栄？which means invigorating to the heart. Then Tsukasa drank it, coughed and looked so miserable. He said it was sour.

In my opinion, Teruma needed to drink that, too. It is partly mostly because he didn't have to drink the Ochimizu in Live 3 (when he lost the game, he forced it on someone else) and also because the guy was so bad at playing this lol. Tada Kurayami Yori, Imakage, and also Rasetsu no Mirai (three of the songs Higuchi knew) were all either his solo song or his duets with someone else. He wouldn't have gotten any song correct if Higuchi hadn't pointed it out to him.

Then after this, they showed the poster to Musical Hakuouki Shinkai Hijikata Toshizou Hen. Kubota said he hadn't seen this final version of this poster before.

Then after this, it was just saying goodbye and the event finally ended, breaking my heart.

Okita Hen: Okita is one of the three most popular characters of Hakuouki, so considering that we had two Hijikata Hens and two Saito Hens, there's definitely a possibility.

Iba & Sakamoto: according to the muster he had right now, it could be either of these two. The only down in their possibility is that they aren't very popular routes and might be hard to adapt

Harada and Heisuke: these two routes could either get a Shitan or a Shinkai.

The smaller possibilities:

Hijikata and Kazama could always get a Shinkai Adaption looking at their popularity.

As for Shinpachi and Yamazaki: they haven't had a route yet. What makes them possible: they are closer to the story of all and probably easier to adapt. What makes them less possible: they are kinda close to Sannan as an old character new route characters.

A sadly unfinished series that is near and dear to my heart; pure fluff, classic 2000s bishounen, and an opposites attract couple, what's not to love?

An adorable one-volume manga about two boys who become close after one discovers the other's crossdressing habit.

>Sensei, Kowai Hanashi Shimasenka/Nightmare in the Art Room

A very smut-heavy horror series about a teacher who just can't catch a break. Lots of psychological horror and some sexual assault, but the overall tone/handling of the subject matter is pretty light. Warning: the last story of Nightmare in the Art Room features lots of insects in sexual situations.

>FAKE

Another old favorite from my youth, FAKE is about two NYC cops falling in love and adopting some kids. Oh, and solving crimes. Very dated in some ways, and contains sexual assault, but very formative for this generation's fans of BL.

>Red Beryl ni Sayonara

Some of the most gorgeous art I've ever seen, and a vampire romance to boot. Red Beryl ni Sayonara is tender and sexy and bittersweet, and was well worth the many years it took scanlators to finish translating it. Warning for implied CSA.

finally, the last on my list

>SARAZANMAI!!

Over the course of the year since I first watched it, I've become consumed by Sarazanmai. It's no exaggeration to say this anime (and its associated light novel and manga) have changed my life for the better. A story about three boys learning how to connect with eachother after they are forcibly turned into kappa. Thank you Ikuhara! Warnings for weird butt stuff (affectionate) and police violence.

Mikata is so creepy I love it

I am currently watching Toudou hen now. And Mikata has the sweetest, most angelic ever as Sannan, but the guy is so good at acting as Sannan when he is gaslighting, being passive aggressive and manipulative. The scene in which he scolded and acted nasty towards Chizuru is just so good. Unlike Teruma, he is not a very extra Sannan but through minimal acting, he can convey very well a Sannan who is going to do something bad. Absolutely love it. 

I thought Mikata was absolutely amazing in Aware no Mouja but my favorite song so far right now has been that song about the path that starts with “Warera no suzumu michi”. It is just so eerie, creepy and absolutely gorgeous. It fits Mikata’s voice so well.  I have not finished watching it, though so I hope I will find some new songs to like at the end.

I know that Mikata was not in Harada hen but I honestly would love to see him in Harada hen so badly. Imagine Mikata in Harada hen and just being so snide and manipulative towards Chizuru. That will be absolute gold. 

Also, I would love to see Teruma in Toudou hen to see how crazy the guy can get. Can they just remake Toudou hen and then cast Teruma as Sannan? Teruma is going to be so wild and feral if they ever remake Toudou hen lol. 

They do invite old casts to cameo in Hakumyu so maybe, someday, we will see both Mikata and Teruma on the same stage together. I kinda wish Mikata would be able to sing a love duet with Chizuru, though. Something tells me the guy is gonna rock it.

Motoyama: How did you get into Hakuoki?

Aight, so it took me two phases, essentially, for me to get into Hakuoki. Being an avid anime fan, I one day youtubed “top anime hugs” and clicked on this video:

One of the first clips is a scene from Hakuoki Movie 2, where Kazama hugs Chizuru. This was the first time I’d ever seen anything of Hakuoki, but the music of the scene truly entranced me. At the time, I was a cello student, and had once learned violin and piano too, so classical music was right up my alley. I quickly became obsessed with the track, which eventually led me to watching season 1 of the series. Thus began my obsession in which I watched anything and everything related to hakuoki within two weeks.

Sanan: Favourite Hakuoki Musical?

HARADA, HANDS DOWN.

Not only because Harada is like my fav, but I think it is the best casting of any musical. Truly, if any of you Hakuoki fans haven’t gotten into the musicals because you’ve seen snippets on youtube and just think they’re not great, WATCH HARADA’S. It’s a great one to start with and for you to get into with good acting, singing, and stage work. The Baka Trio’s casting is absolutely perfect and I don’t think those three can ever be topped in any future musical. Heisuke’s actor, Kizu Tsubasa, actually plays Zeno in a Yona of the Dawn stage play for ya’ll Yona fans, so he is LITERALLY a ball of sunshine and wears yellow perfectly.

Heisuke actor is just so… so on point i want to cry. It really feels like it coming out from the 2d world. The way he laughs, jump here and there, and even the depressive moment is really "Heisuke". I don't know how to describe it either than this. I also like how Harada and Nagakura coming to help at the end??? Bakatrio assemble that we deserved but didn't get at the actual game >:(
