Her response makes whatever scream or cry for help he had planned die in his throat; there's nothing quite as disheartening as being told go ahead, it won't do you any good.
Instead, Steven just stares at her, eyes wide and watery. She's right, of course; no one is coming to save him. God, is this how the night guards feel? No wonder they all quit.
Bell's go-to tactic for diffusing difficult situations has always been acquiescence, and besides an involuntary grunt as his head hits the wall, he doesn't complain when he's pushed harshly away. He doesn't even move from where he's landed against the wall, keeping his eyes down and his hands up placatingly.
Steven's seen violent customers before, of course-- it's ridiculous how many inebriated parents decide to start fistfights in the middle of their kids' birthday parties-- but whoever (or whatever) he's dealing with right now is entirely new and entirely unpredictable.
She's terrifying.
"Uh..." That's not what he expected her to say. Whatever interest she has in the animatronics, it can't be good, but answering is easier than getting manhandled.
"These are just... used for spare parts." Steven risks a glance up, taking a few small shuffle-steps towards the door while her attention is elsewhere. Maybe he'll get lucky and the poor withered models will spring to life and offer a real distraction.
"Why do you ask?"

He’s “saved” from having to make a decision by something he cannot comprehend. He’s… stuck, frozen in place as though paralyzed. And he’s not the only one who is— the entire world (except for this stranger) seems trapped. It’s as though it exists in a photograph, a still snapshot of this exact moment.
Except he can think and see and feel, and terror rises in his chest even without the associated quickening heartbeat and labored breathing. His body is gripped in time, unable to function, but his mind is racing a mile a minute.
She has a knife. Honestly, that’s the least concerning part of this entire situation, but it’s a recognizable threat as opposed to the impossibility of her time stop. Steven at least understands a blade well enough to know he should be frightened by it.
He’d squeeze his eyes shut if he could, but he can’t, so he’s forced to observe as the edge of the weapon comes to rest against his exposed skin.
Of course he’s felt it before. He works in a restaurant, and although he doesn’t typically handle food prep, he’s been in the kitchen enough times to have gotten the inevitable nick or two.
But this context makes everything different. If she’s asking whether he’s ever been held up at knifepoint, the answer’s no. He had been mugged, once, but the guy had definitely been lying about having a gun, and Steven had turned out his pockets more out of pity and awkwardness than any real fear.
This is nothing like that.
He doesn’t even know what this person wants from him, why she’s doing any of this. Steven pleads with her with his eyes— the only means of communication he knows he has. He feels like he’s going insane; can’t she at least tell him why?
Contrary brings her gaze back to the animatronic. Her smile softens. She doesn’t reply.
Her opinions on mechanical life could be mixed, but she could empathize with this one. Its core features had been torn away, leaving it as a shell of its former self. Even though it wasn’t moving, it looked angry and broken. She was, too. But she’d had enough.
She halts time. Sound stops, too. The quiet, resonant humming of the electricity within the building goes silent. It’s silent in a way that she’s too familiar with.
Contrary walks over to him, her expression listless. She puts her hand on his shoulder. There is a knife in her other hand, and she presses it against the skin of his forearm. But not enough to draw blood. Just enough to feel the coolness of the metal.
“You ever felt that before?” she questions, knowing he couldn’t respond.

"...yeah." Steven pauses his slow, steady escape to spare a regretful look towards the old models. He's fond of them, even though he's endlessly relieved that the company decided to go with the new Toy line. (These 'bots really are awfully gross.)
"Deserved it?" he parrots, a sense of foreboding overtaking him. He does not like the way she's looking at him.
"Um... no...? I mean, what? It wasn't a punishment, we just needed the faceplate to help out the new Bonnie."
Bell's nearer to the exit, but now she's looking at him again. Should he risk making a run for it regardless? Maybe-- for some reason, he gets the sense that she wouldn't mind seeing him in a similar state as the withereds.
He takes another step away, then another, then freezes, unable to commit to his mad dash for his car. He doesn't think he'll succeed, and besides, if the stranger doesn't kill him as he tries to escape, corporate will. It's against the rules to leave non-employees alone with proprietary Faz. Ent. technology.
It’s quiet enough in the room that Contrary can hear the shuffling of her victim’s feet behind her. She knows what he’s thinking and that he obviously wants to escape, but she isn’t going to take any maneuvers to counteract him. Not yet.
“Just curious. They caught my attention. Pretty battered-lookin’ things.”
She walks further away from him to inspect the slumped-over body of a mechanical rabbit. Its face is missing, and it looks quite similar to a corpse.
“You think this one deserved it?” she asks, looking back at him with a sinister smile.

He gasps involuntarily, a response to both the sudden ability to breathe again and the sting of pain from the blade.
What an awful compliment to receive. It’s accurate, of course, but still— if he weren’t so afraid, he might shoot her a glare.
Instead, he simply watches as she spreads blood— his blood— over the clean, crisp white of her clothing. It’s completely unnecessary, and almost as baffling as everything else. It’s like she wants to show off.
Steven looks down at the shallow cut on his arm. Blood is beginning to pool again, slow but steady.
“I don’t believe you,” he says plainly, but he still takes a few steps away from her. “You’re— you’re—“ she’s some kind of demon or deity, and just like the devil in all those stories, she seems like she’s here just to play games with him that he has no chance of winning. She’ll let him get to his car and drive away and then show up wherever he stops, just to laugh at the look on his face.
Well guess what, lady? He’s not playing.
“Uh, there was this old coworker of mine, Julia. She was great. We made bets about whether we’d, um, die here at Freddy’s.” A horribly morbid joke now that he says it out loud, but. “So if you’re going to kill me, just do it. I already come in every day knowing this place is dangerous— I don’t care. But I don’t— I’m not going to get all riled up just to entertain you first.”
