I'm currently taking a Ballroom Dancing class at CSUN, and today for class my dance instructor, Dr. Bagheri, taught us a cultural dance that is performed every New Year in Iran. Contrary to the U.S. calendar, the Iranian calendar is one of the only calendars that is based on the phases of the moon, so their new year (Norooz) begins this Saturday, March 21st at 4:30pm. Towards the end of class, Dr. Bagheri explained to us a little bit about his culture, and it was both admirable and touching to see and hear how much love he has for his country. He expressed that for 44 years he has been living in this country, but has never felt like he belongs because he misses his country. However, he cannot go back because if the Iranian government, not Persian, found out what he teaches in America, he would be hanged. Contrary to what is shown on social media, we were shown a side of the TRUE Iranian culture that cannot be seen on the news. Following his lecture, he gave us all a gift, which was similar to what his father gave him when he was a child as a tradition at the beginning of a new year: A $1 bill. He individually wrote our names in Persian (top, middle left), and told us that if we bring this dollar back to him in the same condition that he gave it to us next year, he would multiply it and so on. He even wrote his signature on it, so that we won't go to the bank next year and show him a crispy dollar bill lol to some it may just seem like any other dollar, but to me it represents more than that. It is a piece of culture that was shared to us by a humble man who loves his country and for that I am very honored and grateful to have met Dr. Bagheri because he really opened up my mind, not just toward his culture, but towards the love that is behind each dance that each culture has, such as Salsa, Tango, Swing, Samba and Waltz.
