FEMSLASH FEBRUARY 2024 #5: In which Cameron and Donna talk about weekend plans
[CN: food/dinner mention] . . Donna had come home late that Friday night, too late to be able to go out to Cameron’s property, as planned. It was a warm spring night though, so after she changed into her favorite sweatpants and ate the portion of homemade lasagna that Cameron had reheated for her, Donna went out behind the house and set up their tent in the backyard. She filled their canteens, and gathered up their sleeping bags and some extra blankets, and invited Cameron to spend a little time in the outdoors with her. Still disappointed, Cameron dutifully accepted.
After they’d unzipped the top of the tent, gotten into their sleeping bags, settling onto their backs so that they could look up at the sky, Cameron sighed with frustration. “I can’t believe that I’m about to actually say this, but, you work too much. And it sucks.”
Donna frowned. “You’re right. I’ve been working too late, too often. And I’m sorry. I need to get it together.”
Face scrunching up with confusion, Cameron admitted, “Okay, wow, thought we were gonna have to argue about that, but, I guess not.” Then, she said, “I thought maybe it was that I wasn’t working enough, or, at all, really, and then I started working again, and no, you were still working a whole bunch and I was eating dinner by myself three nights a week.”
Donna pictured Cameron, sitting alone at their dining room table. She was about to apologize again, and to promise to make it up to Cameron, but then she cut herself off and said, “Wait a minute — why am I working late though?” She pushed herself up onto her elbows. “I’m the boss!” She thought about it, and then she said, “Am I just working late out of habit?” She thought again of Cameron, eating dinner on her own, after a long day of working on her latest game, and snapped, “This is bullshit!”
“Yeah, it is!” Cameron agreed.
Donna lay back down, thoroughly aggravated with herself. “That’s it. I’m taking a personal day on Monday. That way we can really go camping this weekend. If you still want to.” When Cameron didn’t say anything, Donna asked, “Do you still want to?”
Cameron looked over at Donna, and said, “I mean, sure, but also…this is kind of nice, right? Like, camping in the backyard? Without all the actual driving or unpleasantness?”
Donna started to laugh. “Okay, so, no camping this weekend. I’m still ditching work on Monday though. We can do something else!” She turned onto her side to face Cameron. “Maybe we can go to the beach, or drive up the coast and find a motel to stay at for no reason, like that time in Sonoma.”
Cameron turned her head to look at Donna. “We could also just stay home, and make out. I’d be very open to that.”
Unable to contain it, Donna smiled that dazzling smile at Cameron, the one that made Cameron think of sunshine. “I can definitely take that under advisement,” Donna nodded.
Cameron looked back toward the sky. “Whatever we end up doing on Monday, I feel like we should do this more often. With the tent, and all.”
Donna pulled herself closer to Cameron, and put her arm around Cameron’s waist, and then Cameron put her hand on Donna’s arm. “It is really nice for being in the backyard, right?”
She closed her eyes, and then she said, “You know, for all the times I missed dinner, there were a bunch of times where I dragged you to client dinners at the last minute, and sometimes they were at our house. You threw a bunch of steaks on the grill with an hour’s notice. It was amazing and I don’t think I ever thanked you.”
Cameron grinned. “You thanked me profusely, Boss. And you also apologized every single time. You just don’t remember it because you were busy with the work part of the dinners.”
Donna picked up Cameron’s hand, and looked at it. “I just had an idea.”
“Another one?”
Still looking at their hands, Donna asked, “What if we get matching tattoos? Is that like, the corniest idea I could possibly have?”
Cameron looked at Donna again, eyes wide and unbelieving. “Are you serious?” When Donna nodded solemnly, Cameron asked, “I guess how corny it is depends on what we’re getting tattooed.”
Quietly, Donna said, “What if we went out this weekend and got matching anchor tattoos?”
Cameron’s eyes were suddenly wet. “I guess it’s arguably kind of corny, but, there are way worse things than corny, Boss.”
Donna sat up excitedly. “So is that a yes, then?”
“Yes,” Cameron laughed. “A thousand times yes!”
