COMMON MISCONCEPTION(S).  That Ray hates his father. He would like people to believe so, as he would like to believe it himself, but the truth is—he doesn’t. When he was a child, he outright idealized him. To Ray, he appeared larger than life, untouchable, almost god-like. The man was surrounded by people who respected him and coveted his recognition. Ray was no different, until that feeling slowly gave way to fear, resentment, anger, and disappointment over the years. What remains after his father’s execution is a lot of confusion, regret and the question whether there couldn’t have been a better end to all of this. It’ll take him quite a while to work through his emotions.

AN IMPORTANT HEADCANON.  Sometimes when he’s being arrogant or obnoxious it’s intended as a defense mechanism, rather than a manifestation of his high confidence or enjoyment of exasperating others. To some extent, that behavior is how he weasels out of situations that make him feel awkward or vulnerable. He struggles to take someone’s gratitude or a genuine compliment. Someone complimenting him on something superficial like his appearance? Whatever, no big deal. But someone giving him a heartfelt thank-you? No, thanks. He’ll let you know how great he is himself so you can roll your eyes and he can move on from the situation.

A USELESS HEADCANON.  You know that embarrassing moment when you accidentally push against a door you’re supposed pull? Couldn’t be Ray. He’ll just keep on pushing until he unhinges the entire door and then walks through. There, problem solved.

POTENTIAL TRIGGERS.  In general, you can expect anything that you’d find in the A.ce A.ttorney games. Murder, death, violence, etc. Other sensitive subject matters that may crop up are mentions of emotional and physical child abuse, mental illness ( depression, dissociative amnesia ), and alcoholism. Personally, I’m fine with mostly any subject matter in threads / backstories, as long as it’s handled respectfully. Since A.ce A.ttorney isn’t a terribly dark franchise I’m more than happy to keep subject matters limited to what is discussed in the games though.

SOMETHING YOU ENJOY ABOUT (WRITING) THEM.  Getting to write dog metaphors / similes to my heart’s content? Bullying my friends’ muses? Getting yelled at in d/iscord because he did something stupid? < 3 More seriously though, there’s so much I enjoy about writing Ray that I struggle to pinpoint just one thing. He’s the culmination of all the crime / thriller / detective media I love and all the character tropes I enjoy, and I like that I get to explore those in my own way!

SOMETHING YOU WANT OTHERS TO KNOW BEFORE WRITING WITH THEM.  He may be a grump generally speaking, but it’s not necessarily his default attitude towards everyone. Defense attorneys, prosecutors and authority figures are received with antagonism until they’ve proven their integrity to him. He cannot stand journalists, politicians, and criminals ( who committed serious offenses ) — and he will let them know that. But everyone else? Entirely depends on them. Some types of people are met favorably from the get-go, too. Forensics, other detectives, beautiful women, kind people who remind him of his mother, etc. He often cares more about people than he lets on. Even if he bullies them. Sometimes especially if he bullies them.

homie that would be. far too many. so i’ll give you the two i currently really wanna talk about, starting with the one i’d get less hate over probably

Narumitsu/Wrightworth- Ace Attorney series

i mean. this one. this one’s easy as hell. let’s start from the beginning. pheonix wright, 3rd grader, is accused of stealing the lunch money of miles edgeworth, aspiring lawyer and fellow 3rd grader. the class is awful to pheonix, saying that he stole the money without proving it in a mock trial. it gets to the point where even the teacher is telling him to apologize. this poor child is sobbing, trying to explain that he didn’t do it. suddenly, an objection. surprise bitches it’s the victim, miles edgeworth. “blah blah you can’t say he did it without any proof blah blah he shouldn’t have to apologize”. the class apologizes and pheonix is acquitted. this marks the start of their friendship. not too long after (a couple of years, at most?) miles’ dad and role model is murdered in a horrible incident (this is responsible for edgeworth’s fear of earthquakes which sucks since he lives in japanifornia). miles is now under the care of manfred von karma, abusive german asshole prosecutor who can die in a hole. this is where miles stops talking to pheonix (moving away to germany can do that) and decides to be a prosecutor with his newfound hatred of crime. skip to college. pheonix is in a horrible abusive relationship, the poor baby barely avoided death and was immediately accused of murder. guess who’s prosecuting this trial? miles mcfrickin edgeworth. and pheonix thinks “hold on. i know him!!! oh my god what happened????” after he is, once again, acquitted, pheonix makes the stupidest desicion in his life: to become a defense attorney. he stops going to art school and starts going to law school, just so he can meet this dude again and ask him what the hell happened to him. because if the stubborn asshole wouldn’t respond to his letters, he’d have to meet him in court eventually anyways. so pheonix becomes a lawyer. he’s... surprisingly good at it. then a case with edgeworth. and he wins!! super well!!! once again!! edgeworth is likely just “oh my god what the fuck???” idk tho since we play as pheonix, dumbass extroardinaire. anyways, in either this case or a later one (i do not remember) edgeworth comes up to pheonix after losing and essentially tells him “you’re making me feel things and i don’t like feeling things so get out of my court” (i mean literally. “saddled with unnecessary feelings, like unease and uncertainty” like bITCH??? YOU LOVE HIM D U H). and then edgeworth is accused of murder. pheonix immediately is at the detention center going “bitch let me defend you or so help me god.” miles, ever the confusing fuck, is just “no. not happening, absolutely not.” (there’s also a line where edgeworth goes “i... didn’t want you to see me like this” and in the remastered version pheonix deadass thinks “trust me, i didn’t want to see you like this, either” like b IT CH.) anyways a quick earthquake happens and once everyone’s settled, pheonix realizes he can’t see miles through the glass anymore. he stands up to look through the room and bam there’s edgeworth, on the floor trembling. this poor man. anyways pheonix is just “well i’m gonna defend u even if u don’t want me to so i’m gonna start investigating” and he does that and talks to edgeworth’s lovely detective pal, gumshoe, who explains edgeworth’s fear of earthquakes and also that after he lost his first trial against pheonix edgeworth was literally just saying “wright, wright, wright” and pacing u h m?? anyways eventually pheonix finds out that the case is related to the dl-6 incident, which is the one where edgeworth’s father dies. he goes back to the detention center and edgeworth’s all “well that’s what i didn’t want you to find out but now you know so sure defend me what the hell but you’re gonna lose” bc guess who’s prosecuting??? v o n k ar m a. anyways pheonix wins the trial, gets von karma convicted for murdering edgeworth’s father also bc dl6 was never actually solved and it’s funky fresh. edgeworth is all “i don’t know what to say,,,,” so maya, pheonix’s lovely assistant in the original trilogy, is all “try t h a n k yo u”

Ok, uhh, going from the events of Maya's trial from the first game and Misty Fey's involvement in the initial DL6 case, how do you think Phoenix and the Fey family overall fit into Fight Cat Verse? I've been thinking about this for the last few hours ngl, but I don't want to derail any plans that you might have.

Kurain Village and the Khura’in equivalents, I think I want to be tribes with the Kurain tribe having, obviously, come from the Khura’in tribe early on and moving close to the lake territory prior to the arrival of the Clans. I like the idea of Cat Spirit Channeling being a thing and it’s beneficial in that it kinda minimizes vague prophecies and omens, but the channeled cats, while far more specific, tend to not have as much knowledge now that they’re temporarily ‘disconnected’ from well I guess Twilight Realm is still a valid name for the Kurain and Khura’in tribes to use for Cat Afterlife.

The Kurain tribe, being small and having the ability to channel passing matrilineally, has to, as in canon, go outside itself to keep lines alive. They probably had some agreements with other tribes as far as taking mates and such. Once the Clans arrived, the Master came to negotiate and put the same question up. At a Gathering, leaders came to the unanimous decision to decide individually what they’d do. Exact terms became muddled as time went on and now the sight of a Kurain cat, particularly of the Master’s line, coming to socialize and scope out a mate is not particularly unexpected, though individual cats may get bristly. Notably, under Blazestar’s leadership, there was a thorough barring of those visits. In response, WindClan, mostly to be contrary after ThunderClan’s unjust assault, murder of their deputy, and kidnapping of a child, became even friendlier with the Kurain tribe. 

Phoenix and Larry ( Ashfeather and Laureltail respectively ) are both WindClan cats and were apprenticed with Quailclaw before ThunderClan’s assault. Ultimately, as apprentices are wont to do, Ashpaw wanted to go out to retrieve Quailpaw fucking immediately after the battle and was 0.2s away from dragging Laurelpaw with him, but was stopped before anything could come of it. Ashpaw felt great guilt afterwards and resolved to be a great warrior to save Quailpaw from ThunderClan’s clutches. It’s a goal that gets muddled a bit as it does in canon, but WindClan’s close ties to the Kurain tribe do facilitate Mia and Ashfeather’s meeting.

There’s no super clear equivalent of Misty being disgraced? I mean, fucking everyone knows Stormthroat killed Dappleclaw and stole his son, but the Kurain tribe has the same internal upheaval as Kurain village does in canon. Morgan probably secretly sets something in motion to run off Misty or make her appear dead and gone sometime before or around the time of ThunderClan’s attack. Mia ends up leaving to work on what happened on her own and joins WindClan ( maybe Morgan made it look like Clans cats were involved? listen I’m essentially rewriting a lawyer game series but cats ). Mia drops a Tribe name I haven’t come up with and takes the name Sagepool and is “intellectually attracted ;)” to Poppysky. She mentors Ashpaw and keeps his life from totally imploding when some inevitable shitstorm with Dahlia’s cat equivalent happens. 

( Maybe Ashpaw’s first mentor also dies in the battle and Sagepool takes the job having been there a while? Or she doesn’t officially mentor him at all and just serves as a mentor figure sometimes? These timelines are rough jashdgshdghg )

( Do I have to ax Sagepool because I totally don’t want to? Can I just fuck my own timeline & be like wow look at Poppysky and Sagepool having a very happy inter-Clan lesbian relationship shut your mouth )

Maya visits her sister a whole bunch. I may dial up the political intrigue approximately 100x by not having a Redd White murder and instead having Morgan realize Sagepool is getting Close As Shit to figuring out the Truth and sets up machinations to have her killed and it be pinned on Maya. Ashfeather is distraught, Maya is distraught, WindClan’s relationship with the Kurain tribe is growing tense ( if it blows into a full battle, WindClan could win but they’re terrified of ThunderClan swooping in again if they’re weakened ). Ashfeather steps in to investigate and ensure Maya is found innocent. Probably the murder was set up to look like a random snake/fox/badger attack but with y’know hints that Maya actually staged it, but it’s revealed Maya wasn’t involved at all. Unfortunately the depth of the setup isn’t found out because there’s the second game to do lmao.

Quailclaw and Ashfeather like... see each other on border patrols and at Gatherings and Quailclaw is a Huge Asshole and Ashfeather is like ‘:('

As my Turnabout Goodbyes equivalent is Stormthroat doing a coup but Bad, Ashfeather isn’t... super involved with the process. Maybe when RiverClan goes through disaster with Lightningstar and Poppysky, ThunderClan and WindClan both send groups to “help with the stabilization”. Ashfeather is certain things are going better with Quailclaw because working together is doing well for helping RiverClan not collapse from ousting both their leader & deputy, but Quailclaw is considering going rogue and taking a long swim in a turbulent, rocky river the whole time.

No dl6 au everyone finds out about Miles and Phoenix's engagement announcement goes like David and Patrick's in Schitts Creek. Everyone finds out before they even officially say anything on the same night as Caberet.

Franziska: Miles, congrats on the news! Really happy for you guys.

Miles: Okay, you know what, the funny thing was, originally I was going to be the one that told people.

Gregory: Told people what?

Franziska: Oh, does your Dad not know?

Maya: If we're talking about Miles' big engagement news, we haven't decided on a best man yet, but we think it's probably gonna be a black tie affair.
