Dandadan Episode 7 Review - A Mother's Love

If Episode 4 hasn’t put Science Saru on the map for high quality animation, then this episode surely did. I haven’t read the source material, but even as an anime-only watcher, I can definitely see the love and passion the studio puts into this. It’s crazy how a Japanese anime studio owned by a Korean person can make such invigorating quality.

The rest of the fight with Acrobatic Silky was animated well. I love how the kids outwitted her by running away just so her hair gets caught in the nook and cranny of the warehouse. Okarun manages to defeat her by going full throttle. However, their victory isn’t a happy one as devouring Aira caused her to die. Turbo Granny explained that since she’s an ordinary person, being devoured by a spirit would easily kill someone. I sort of like that detail, honestly. There’s no anime logic about how she could survive this. She’s dead and that is what the rest of the episode is about. 

What I also like is that seeing her dead easily causes Momo and Okarun to start doing what they can like telling Turbo Granny to call the ambulance and for Momo to resuscitate her using her psychic hands. Though, it does feel odd that a group of teenagers know how to resuscitate someone so skillfully, even if it’s an attempt. They’re both not doctors and are on the opposite spectrum of them. The only way she can be saved is having Acrobatic Silky connect her aura to Aira’s like connecting two cords together.

That’s where the highlight of the episode comes in the form of Silky’s tragic backstory. Man, it broke my heart seeing Silky’s life before her unfortunate end. She was a single mother working as a prostitute alongside several jobs in order to provide for her and her beloved daughter who was her entire world and her purpose for living. Her daughter was sweet in that she was essentially her light in her life. She worked hard in order to buy the red dress that eventually becomes what she wears as a ghost and she was also teaching her daughter ballet. The tragedy comes from debt collectors or mobsters coming in to assault her and then they later took her daughter away, which is severely tragic because the sequences of her life before the tragedy shows that her daughter just celebrated her fifth birthday. If the mobsters are related to trafficking, this means that her daughter’s fate became that of a trafficked child and that’s horrendous in itself. Also, props to Hina Kino for voicing the daughter. She's excellent at creating a child-like voice, especially with how she wailed.

Silky’s dance sequence before meeting her end was seriously beautiful, yet so tragic. The scenery with the starry night was gorgeous but Silky starts dancing. Ballet is an elegant, graceful and poised style of dancing and that’s how she decided to meet her end. The way it was animated was so gorgeous. Also, if you noticed, Silky’s dancing was used in the full music video of Dandadan’s opening song.

There are some people out there wondering if Silky’s daughter is Aira. She’s not. When Silky became a ghost, she could only stand listlessly until little Aira came and mistook her for her recently deceased mother. Realizing that she had a daughter, Silky latched onto Aira and decided to protect her until it became obsessive and psychotic. 

This sequence also showcases why Aira behaved the way she did earlier. She’s a narcissist primarily because of what her father had said about her needing to become stronger in order to let her mother be proud of her once she sees her again. That was why she developed a high self-confidence in order to one day show her late mother. She may have been insufferable before but the memories have completely humbled her. The way she hugged Silky just so she could have solace and not be forgotten in death was such a powerful scene. This shows that underneath her pompous attitude, Aira had a kind heart. My opinion of her instantly changed after this. Wow. I legit shed some tears.

I wonder if Dandadan’s story is just encountering a ghost or an alien and learning of their stories or what not. There doesn’t seem to be an overall grand scheme of things. I like that honestly. It’s just a story about kids encountering the supernatural and learning a lot of life lessons amidst the craziness. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Anyways, what are your thoughts about this episode?

Twice’s 10th member's birthday!

It was a bright and sunny day, with anticipation hanging in the air as the members of TWICE gathered in their shared living space. Today was a very special day, for it was the birthday of their beloved 10th member, the youngest and most babied of them all. The morning arrives, and you wake up to the sound of cheerful voices echoing throughout the dorm. Groggily rubbing your eyes, you make your way to the living room, where your fellow members have gathered. As you step into the room, you're greeted by an explosion of multicoloured balloons, confetti, and a chorus of "Happy Birthday!". As the rest of the members huddled together, whispering and exchanging mischievous glances, Jihyo, the group's leader (and one of Y/N's mom), stepped forward with a mischievous smile and announced with a voice filled with excitement.

Jihyo - We have a special surprise planned for our princess!

The birthday girl, adorned in a cute and frilly outfit befitting her princess-like persona, giggled with glee. Speaking her eyes sparkling with curiosity she asked a question.

Y/N -  Ooh, what is it, unnie?

Momo, the ever-playful member, stepped forward, holding a silver tray adorned with a lavish display of delectable treats. Exclaiming with excitement about something they made with so much love. While Sana, known for her sweet and caring nature, placed a crown delicately on the birthday girl's head.

Momo - We have prepared a grand breakfast feast, fit for a princess! *showing the tray full of colourful pancakes, fluffy pastries, and fresh fruit*

Sana - Today, my dear, you shall be treated like royalty. *hugging her with a kiss on the forehead*

As the members gathered around the table, they showered the birthday girl with compliments, singing a heartfelt rendition of "Happy Birthday." The atmosphere was filled with joy and warmth as they exchanged stories, laughter, and cherished memories.

Jeongyeon, the reliable and protective member, reached into a bag and pulled out a beautifully wrapped gift. Whispering with a soft smile on her face to the maknae how much she means to them and hugging her to her chest. The birthday girl's eyes widened in excitement as she eagerly tore open the gift, revealing a sparkling necklace adorned with a pendant shaped like a tiara. 

Jeongyeon - Now you'll always have a piece of our love with you!

Dahyun, the group's energizer, couldn't contain her excitement any longer. Bouncing on her toes she revealed the surprise that they had (lol, I love her)

Dahyun - Unnie has something special planned for the afternoon! We're going to the amusement park, just like you always wanted!

The birthday girl's eyes widened with delight, her cheeks flushing pink while she ran to her sisters. 

Y/N - Really? That's the best present ever! *hugging each member tightly*

As they made their way to the amusement park, laughter filled the air as the members took turns riding roller coasters, playing games, and indulging in delicious treats. They made sure the birthday girl's every wish and desire was fulfilled, knowing that this day was all about celebrating her. As the sun began to set, the members gathered around a beautifully decorated table. Nayeon, as one of the moms, brought out a cake adorned with candles, each representing a year of their kid's life. With a cheerful tune, they sang "Happy Birthday" once again, their voices blending harmoniously. With a wish in her heart, Y/N blew out the candles, surrounded by the love and adoration of her fellow members. At that moment, she knew she was the luckiest girl in the world. As the day drew to a close, the members nestled together, wrapping the birthday girl in a warm embrace. They whispered with their voices filled with affection:

TWICE except Y/N - We love you, little princess.

With her heart overflowing with happiness, their cutie pie (as they called her some days) nestled closer, feeling the warmth and love from her unnies' embrace. The day had been nothing short of magical, with surprises, laughter, and an overwhelming sense of love. Chaeyoung, the artistic soul of the group and one of her most loved unnies reached over and gently wiped a tear of joy from the birthday girl's cheek. 

Chaeyoung - You deserve all of this and more, our precious youngest. Your presence in our lives brings so much joy, and we're grateful to have you as part of our TWICE family.

The birthday girl's heart swelled with gratitude and her voice filled with emotion.

Y/N - Thank you, unnie!! I never imagined a birthday could be this wonderful.

Mina, the elegant ballerina and graceful member, spoke up with a soft smile.  

Mina - Our little princess brings out the best in all of us. You have a way of making every day brighter and reminding us to cherish the simple joys in life, honey. 

As the night sky glittered with stars, they gathered around, exchanging stories, jokes, and heartfelt conversations. Each member shared their favourite memories of the birthday girl, highlighting her infectious laughter, her kindness, and the way she effortlessly brought the group closer together. To finish the day, Tzuyu, the group's second maknae, looked at her younger sister with admiration. 

Tzuyu - You may be our youngest, but you possess wisdom and maturity beyond your years. You inspire us to be better versions of ourselves and remind us of the importance of embracing our inner child, kiddo. 

The birthday girl blushed, feeling a surge of love and acceptance from her unnies. At that moment, she realized that being spoiled and babied wasn't just about material things. It was about the unwavering support, care, and affection that her TWICE family showered upon her. They wrapped themselves in cosy blankets as the night grew late, gazing up at the stars. The birthday girl nestled against Jihyo's chest, her eyes filled with contentment. 

Y/N - Mama, this has been the best birthday I could have ever imagined!

Jihyo hugged her tightly, planting a gentle kiss on her forehead. 

Jihyo - And there are countless more incredible birthdays to come, my little princess. We will always be here, spoiling you with love and making sure you feel cherished.

At that moment, surrounded by her TWICE family, the youngest member felt an overwhelming sense of belonging and love. As the night drew to a close, she knew that this birthday celebration would forever hold a special place in her heart. For she had been showered with love, kindness, and an unbreakable bond that would only grow stronger with each passing year. And as they drifted off to sleep, Y/N held onto the precious memories, knowing that her TWICE unnies were her greatest gift and the unnies could only think one thing:

This month we're celebrating Sidney, Ken, and Maya's birthdays! Sidney is an adorable red head from my project After-Party Chemistry! Ken and Maya are fraternal twins. They're not associated with any one project right now... But I'll be dropping some fun illustrations and OC lore about them on their respective days for everyone!

VN Development | Froot Basket: Dark Chocolate Release 

I'll be releasing Froot Basket: Dark Chocolate's voiced update for patrons this month! You can play before I drop it on Itch on March 15. Last month, I added a "recustomize Jordan" menu in case you want to swap between Jordan's voices or looks in-game. I also messed around with the Gallery and Achievements screen, but you'll have to see in the update.

Other than prepping for FBDC's Voiced Update Release, I have some marketing art for release to work on lol... I'm planning two different pieces: a new poster featuring all the characters and a piece which features the four different color combinations of Jordans. I don't expect to finish these this month because day job's looking pretty busy, BUT I'm hoping to at least get some sketches done.

I'll be wrapping up some zine pieces and commissions. :^)

Next Month

March 1st falls on a Friday so the Monthly and Polls will drop all on the same day. I can't wait to see who'll make my birth month's cover!

Dahyun was incredibly upset with you, and she didn’t want to be, especially not now. It was the eve before her birthday when you told her that you had to miss your date with her to rehearse for your group’s latest comeback. While she didn’t want to be petty, especially since she understood the lifestyle you lead, she was still sad that you weren’t going to be around on her special day for the first time since you got together years ago.

“Are you sure you can’t just escape?” The pale girl asked rhetorically as she lay in the bed, staring at your image on her phone screen. Biting your lip as you stared at her sympathetically gave her all the answers she needed. Your girlfriend sighed sadly, leaning back into the bed. “I know it sucks, sunshine.” A prominent pout appearing on her lips, making you chuckle softly.

You looked around before whispering into you device, “I just want to be with you right now…” Seeing your fellow idol’s pout begin to crack, you continued to flatter her. “Doing everything I want to do to you…” You paused, gauging her reaction. Dahyun had given you her full attention, a sly smirk gracing her lips.

“What would that be, L/n?” She questioned, propping her phone up on her pillow, her hand holding up her chin. Dark chocolate orbs trained intently on you making you grin playfully. “Why cuddle, of course! What else, Kim?” You retorted making her groan out before laughing softly. A satisfied smile finds its way onto your lips.

“There’s my Dahyunie.” You said, making her cheeks tint to a cute pink hue. “I just wanted to see you smile, sunshine. I hate seeing you so upset, especially if I’m the cause.” Dahyun, feeling guilty, stroked your grainy face through her phone. She placed a gentle kiss over the screen, making you chuckle softly, trying to expel the sinking feeling in your chest. As she was close to the screen, she whispered like a prayer, “It’s not your fault.”

Before you could get another word in, your bandmates called out to you, making you cringe and sigh heavily. As she could sense your disappointment, she hushed you and offered you the smile that you fell in love with. “Go! I want to see you do well during your comeback!” Flashing a sad smile, you nodded before getting up and walking over to your bag to put your phone back in your bag. “I love you, Dubu. I’ll talk to you soon, my sunshine.”

The moment the line died, Dahyun fell onto her side feeling bad about herself. She ran a hand through her hair trying to hold back her irrational tears. It’d been months since she last saw you, and it was becoming harder and harder to not miss your soft voice, the way you held her when you cradled her at night, the sweet way you smelled. Just you. The pale Korean simply closed her eyes and dreaded another moment without you in it.

On the other side of Seoul, you stared down at your phone, your beloved ray of sunshine as your lockscreen. You bit the inner layer of your cheek softly before nonchalantly tossing your phone into the piles of bags, swinging your arms back and forth frustrated. When your leader saw you, they couldn’t help but laugh at your expression. You glared at them as you began stretching again.

“Shove off. It’s hard enough that I haven’t seen her in months, makes it worse that I can’t be with her on her birthday.” You breathed out before pushing your hair out of your face. The other idols around you chuckled in their own accord before one said, “She’s turning 23, Y/n. The next day, Dahyun rose from her bed tired and managing a slight headache from both the tears and tossing around in bed the night before. Releasing a heavy sigh as she looked down at her phone. With the multiple greetings from her family, her friends, and the Onces, a genuine smile befell her with the sense of sadness that not a single text or post from you came up.

Sana was the first one in the room, a big, happy smile on her face as she ran up to her member and friend excitedly, tackling Dahyun to the bed. Both of them laughed as she wrapped her arms around the Japanese woman.

“Happy Birthday, Dahyun!” She cried out loudly, catching the attention of the other girls as they all began to pile into the room. They all burst out singing, off-tune and loud, causing the celebrant to laugh and clap for them, dancing along to the out of harmony singing. For a moment, the rapper felt truly happy.

“Okay, so after practice today, Dubu…” Jihyo paused briefly, to build up the suspense of the night. “We’re going to dinner, Nayeon-unnie and Momo-unnie are going to buy drinks and we’ll come home and have some fun of our own. How does that sound?” The vocalist offered with her signature gummy smile. Dahyun nodded, looking at the girls around her, feeling grateful for the people here yet she still held hopes that you would find a way to get to you.

But as the day drew on, with no call, no message, no random gift from you, she didn’t feel too hopeful and her morale was obviously low. From getting choreography wrong to not being in the mood to goof off with her other members. Her birthday was turning up to be one of the worst to date.

Dahyun wasn’t hopeful for the dinner but she it’s not like she could skip it. She got ready despite the disappointment that continued to eat at her mood. The rapper got up to see her members who waited patiently outside for her. “Come on, we don’t want to be late, pretty girl.” Chaeyoung said taking her hand and dragging her out of the dorm, filling the group up with laughter and talking about other things they’d seen or done throughout the day.

At the restaurant, the girls were all giddy while Dahyun couldn’t bring herself to feel the entire party, still sulkily sipping at the spiked iced tea they had ordered. There were about seven of the unknown people and Dahyun was becoming increasingly nervous.

A single figure stood in the middle, turned around, more hidden from the rest.

“I hope you’re ready for a show, darlings…” The figure turned tossing the hat and the mask to the side. When the speakers burst to life with the voice that Dahyun knew like the back of her hand, she became speechless. Once she got a good look at the performer’s face, the bright smile returned to her face and you returned it.

“To my love, my girl, my sunshine. Happy Birthday.” You smiled and tossed jacket that you were clad in in the direction of your girlfriend, who caught it and held it close to her chest, swooning. Your group began to perform their regular numbers, filled with energy and TWICE began hyping them up. Once the group had burned through two of their songs, ones that you had specifically written for Dahyun.

Then, your band members tossed you a handy guitar. Before you began strumming it, you paced close to the rapper, a fond smile on your face. “When we met, I was a trainee with nothing to my name but a guitar and a passion. You took the time to get to know me and who knew that I would fall madly in love with one of…” You paused to smile at Chaeyoung and your group’s rapper before continuing. “The best rappers in South Korea. I love you, Dahyunie.” You were right in front of their table, a smile on your face as Dahyun held back soft tears.

From across the table that was flushed against the back of the restaurant, you took her delicate hand, placing a kiss over the back of her hand. You continued to strum the guitar, for a solo, acoustic cover of ‘What is Love’, making the girls both cringe at you singing their own song but still finding the gesture sweet. After the song ended, Dahyun couldn’t sit patiently anymore. Jumping out of her seat, though with great difficulty, to get to you.

Finally, after months, you dropped the guitar and took her in your arms happily, carrying her and taking in the scent you’d missed so dearly. You placed a kiss softly on her cheek, so happy to be by her side again. “My girl, my precious girl.” You whispered against her ear, pulling her impossibly closer. Dahyun on the other hand, choked back the satisfied sob.

“bokuto, you have flour on your nose,” you grimace at your boyfriend, who dabs at his nose and manages to do nothing but coat it on more in a fine powder. internally you wonder why in the world you thought trying to make a birthday cake with him was a good idea—you should’ve just handled it yourself. that is what you do best, after all, and bokuto is… not very good at following the directions your recipe presented with him.

“is it gone?” he asks with a head tilt. “uh… sure.”

bokuto is not good at baking. this is a confirmed fact within your household. yet for some reason he begged you to let him help with making the cake on his birthday, and how in the hell were you supposed to say no when he looked at you like that? it was impossible. so despite the very large gap in pastry expertise, you cleared a spot for him in the kitchen. it was not a good idea. next is the eggs. despite your multiple warnings to be gentle because the shells shatter, bokuto slams it into the side of the bowl and causes egg to fly everywhere. you sigh defeatedly. “i’m sorry!” bokuto reiterates as you wipe it up, frustrated but… endearingly frustrated. you probably could’ve been done with this half an hour ago if he wasn’t here, but, hey, it’s more exciting now. “i thought you were exaggerating.” “it’s fine, cutie,” you say, smiling as soon as you look up from the bowl. your frustration dissipates when you see him looking so disappointed. “just listen to me, okay? i think we’ve established i know what i’m doing by now.” he agrees. the rest of the baking goes by in a breeze, especially since bokuto’s careful to listen to your every word now that he knows the consequences of ignoring it. finally, after disappointments and triumphs by the dozen, you manage to get the cake in the oven and are faced with the mess of the kitchen.

“please remind me,” you say warily while you two are cleaning the smidges of batter everywhere, “to not ever let me bake with you again.” he laughs. you’re only half-joking. “but it was fun, babe,” he bumps his hip into you, causing your hips to jerk to the side like a newton’s cradle. “wasn’t it? wasn’t it? wasn’t it?” okay, you can’t help smiling. for all of the exhaustion it was very fun, and usually you don’t even like baking with other people who have experience. sure, the cake’s probably going to be crappy, and you’re definitely making him stay back while you do the frosting and decor, but you two shared tiny kisses and smiles and laughter. it was fun. so who cares if the cake’s bad? you beam and pull him close to you for a kiss. “yeah, bo, it was fun.”
