The hall was, to Marianne, overcrowded. Claude wasted no opportunity to introduce Fódlan to Almyran culture, his own birthday party included. It made for a long guest list. Marianne, for all her recent training by her adoptive father to be a proper noble and orator, found it a tad overwhelming.
Eventually she planted herself at the edge of the dance floor with a glass of Almyran wine and simply watched old war friends and emerging heirs mingle. Everyone seemed in good spirits. Perhaps no one would notice if she and two others snuck outside for a breath of fresh air...
A tap on her shoulder made Marianne turn. Dimitri bowed to her, smile kind and eye bright in a way that made Marianne suspicious. “Would you care to dance?” He asked.
“Of course,” Marianne replied-- but glanced awkwardly down at her wine glass. As if from thin air, Hilda appeared, took the glass, winked at Marianne, and disappeared into the crowd again.
Unfazed, Dimitri lead Marianne out onto the dance floor before she could say anything else. Her partners were obviously planning something. Marianne settled her hands in the correct places before raising an eyebrow up at Dimitri. “What is going on?”
He chuckled. “Nothing devious, I assure you.” He said nothing more as he guided her among the other couples. Marianne occasionally saw Hilda flitting around the edges of the dance floor, but she seemed to be doing nothing more than watching, Marianne’s wine still in hand.
“Hilda had a proposal.” Marianne focused back on Dimitri as he continued. “She thought this might be a good night to reveal ourselves.”
It took all of Marianne’s training not to stutter. “Tonight?”
Dimitri, Hilda, and Marianne had been in a relationship since before the end of the war with the Empire. Many of their closest friends knew, but due to many factors-- not the least of which was Dimitri taking the title of king-- they had kept it secret from the rest of the country.
For Dimitri to state so casually that all the secrecy could end tonight-- Marianne misstepped on the next beat, but Dimitri pulled her to his chest to catch her. “What about Claude?” She asked. “Wouldn’t it be rude to upset his birthday party?”
“Hilda thought having a “dramatic reveal” of a secret would be just the thing Claude would enjoy.”
Marianne pulled away from Dimitri to cup his cheek. “What about you? Are you ready to do this?”
Dimitri laid his hand over hers and leaned into her touch. “I am. I feel as if I’ve been hiding myself for most of my life. It would bring me nothing but joy to stop hiding how much I care for you both.”
Some part of Marianne knew that wouldn’t be completely true. The King of Faerghus having two lovers would surely bring some grief from the populace, never mind the fact that both women were from the Alliance. If myths of Marianne’s crest ever came to light, there could be outcry from both Faerghus and Goneril.
Despite all that, Marianne could understand what Dimitri meant. It would be bliss to not have to hold herself back from acting “overly familiar” with Hilda and Dimitri during public outings like this. To just be with her loved ones and not worry about who was watching.
Dimitri spun the two of them, jogging Marianne from her thoughts. “It’s all down to you, Marianne,” Dimitri said, his voice just above the music. “If you aren’t ready, we can wait as long as you need. But if you are, all you have to do is kiss me at the end of this song.”
She tightened her grip on his shoulder. “I...”
“We will wait. You know we will.”
Marianne caught sight of Hilda over Dimitri’s shoulder once again. Her face held a carefree smile, but her gaze was intense. The song was coming to a close. Marianne would have to decide soon.
But-- somehow she had known her answer the moment Dimitri had spoken of Hilda’s plan.
Shifting both hands to Dimitri’s shoulders, Marianne planted her feet and rose to her tiptoes to kiss him just as the last note rang out. She could hear gasps all around her. She could imagine countless eyes swiveling towards them. But she could also feel Dimitri smile into the kiss, and that encouraged her to linger a few moments longer.
When Marianne pulled away, she found Dimitri beaming down at her. A good portion of the hall had indeed stopped to stare at them. Dimitri ignored them all and strode toward Hilda with purpose. He bent to kiss her excited grin, causing another round of gasps and mutters to ripple through the hall.
Hilda passed Dimitri the wine glass and practically bounded over to Marianne-- who couldn’t hold back a giggle at the sight. Hilda was just too adorable at times. Reaching her side, Hilda pulled Marianne into a kiss that Marianne was all too happy to accept. All her misgivings before had vanished, eclipsed by a giddiness that threatened to unsteady her.
Claude’s near-hysterical laughter cut through the stunned silence. He called for the band to continue playing, and Hilda swept Marianne into the next dance. A boisterous chatter began along with the music but Marianne paid it no mind. “I love you,” she said to Hilda.
Hilda grinned and brushed their noses together. “I love you too!”
Marianne laughed, allowing Hilda to spin her and catching a look at Dimitri. He was surrounded by guests, all appearing somewhere between alarmed and delighted. Dimitri raised the wine glass to Marianne, and aimed her a look that said ‘I love you’ louder than Marianne ever could.
