A Birthday Surprise

“Wakey-wakey, love!”

Mackenzie hears her husband’s voice, rousing her awake as his hands gently shake her shoulders.

She opens her eyes to find Dean staring back, grinning like a child, his eyes like a clear lake in the light of the morning.

“Mmm-“ She grumbles out, not quite finding words yet in her half-awake state. “Wha- Dean?”

He interrupts her with a quick kiss. “Happy Birthday! C’mon, no time to sleep. We’ve got plans!”

She rolls her eyes fondly. “It’s a good thing I love you or I’d rip your guts out for waking me up on my birthday!”

Dean laughs, his strong arms scooping her up. “You’ll thank me later, I have surprises. Cause I’m the best.” He smirks, big and cheesy as he carries her towards the kitchen still in her pajamas.

As they get closer Mackenzie is hit with the most delicious smell drifting towards her. “Oh, you do have surprises!! What is it?? What is it?!”

“Patience,” Dean says, pressing a kiss to her nose. “We’re almost there.”

Then she begins to hear a deep and familiar voice singing.

_Fly me to the moon, let me play among the stars…._

They enter the kitchen and she sees Knight in an apron, singing absentmindedly as he pours batter into the waiting skillet. Their dogs linger around him, waiting for scraps.

_Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars_

Dean finishes the line as he sets her down, alerting Knight to their presence.

He puts down the bowl he’s holding and crosses the kitchen, kissing Dean on the cheek before pulling her into a big warm hug.

“Hiya sweetheart, happy birthday!” Knight kisses her cheek too before letting her go. “Are you surprised?”

Mackenzie can barely contain her excitement. “Of course I’m surprised!! You and Randy weren’t supposed to be back from your honeymoon until August!”

“We changed plans, couldn’t miss our best girl’s birthday. Now sit your keister down, I got doughnuts to make!”

“Doughnuts? Tay gave you the recipe??” She could barely believe her sister would give out her secret recipe.

Dean pulls up a seat beside her at the kitchen bar. “Only because she threatened to sic Jey on him if he ever gives it to anyone else.”

Knight laughs. “Or worse, come after me herself!”

“Scary,” She says, knowing full well how terrifying her cute old sister can be when provoked. “So does that mean they’re not coming by today? If you’re making the doughnuts?”

“Nah, sugar.” Dean takes her hand in his. “We’re having everyone over later. Knight here was just trying to show off.”

Knight flexes his muscles as he gets back to work.

Neither of them let Mackenzie lift a finger that morning, taking care of everything. Dean even picked out her birthday outfit for her to change into after breakfast was ready.

Knight insists upon taking her out on a little joyride on his motorcycle and they spend an hour or so riding around, enjoying the wind in her hair and the classic rock Knight played.

By the time they get back to the house, there were several cars in the driveway and balloons at the front door.

Mackenzie turned to Knight, knowing now that the ride had been a distraction, even though it had been a blast.

“SUPRISE!!”

As they entered the house there was a loud cheer from the 20 or so people crammed into the living room.

All the people in the world she loves most in one room. Ludwig is there by the bookshelf with Sami, Knight squeezes himself between JD and Randy. Drew is there in a very pretty dress with Seth’s arm around his waist while Punk stares at him from across the room.

She sees her sister, despite her short stature compared to the others, holding a gigantic birthday cake. Jey at her side, looking anxious like it might topple over onto his wife at any moment.

Dean appears next to her, taking her hand to ground her in all the noise. “Happy Birthday Sweetheart.” He kisses her sweetly, not as crazy and passionate as she’d like, but enough for being in front of company.

They help Tay to get the cake somewhere sturdy before setting up the candles.

Mackenzie holds on to Dean’s hand the whole time as the party sings Happy Birthday, and she sees love on all the happy faces around her.

After she blows the candles out, Knight asks “Well did ya make a wish?”

She shakes her head. “I’ve already got everything I could wish for!”
