not a demon, there's a reason by @ithilien-writes oooooh my god I love 'kid learns about their parent's past' fic, and the Chris season 8 set up is just a gold mine for it. Here's an absolutely incredible entry into the fic canon, in which Chris, bored and lonely in Texas, stumbles upon Eddie's teenage diary. He reads it as a conduit to learning more about Shannon than his Dad has ever told him, and in doing so comes to understand Eddie like he never did before. (I would also recommend reading other fic from this author for some lovely interconnected story telling and further insight into some of Eddie's teenage secrets.)

kid, you better come home by @wildehacked is a short one shot with Buck's POV on Chris being away, navigating calls to him, established but relatively new bucktommy, and how Buck copes with all that whilst looking after Eddie and nurturing their queerplatonic family set up. A really interesting exploration of Chris and Buck's relationship with the basis that 'Every other time Chris has fought with Eddie, he’s gone to Buck.' I love Chris' voice in this, it's so well captured.

i’ve seen a couple suns that set forever by @cal-daisies-and-briars '“So?” Chris asks. “You’ve said things are going to change before, and it always ends up with people leaving, and me feeling terrible all over again. How is it different now?”' in which Chris and Eddie go to family therapy, and Eddie comes out. Really wonderful exploration of how not everything is fixed so easily, and Eddie working to repair the damage whilst Chris works on understanding his Dad and coming to a place of forgiveness, whilst dealing with his own abandonment issues. Luckily a conversation with Bobby helps him look at his Dad in a new light.

my home is your body by @coldbam 'This is Buck’s first Pride. Sue him, he’s excited. He’s going all out.' After Buck and Tommy have a rather acrimonious split during Buck's first pride out, he discovers Eddie has had a very different night. There as an ally, Eddie embarks on some steep self discovery learning curves. Exploring grindr leads to a serious friends with benefits situationship, but of course there's no miscommunication over feelings here...right? Oh Buddie...what are we gonna do with you. A delightful comedy of errors whilst also being hot. Loved this!

let the world have its way with you and thousand times (which isn’t half enough) by @shitouttabuck in which Eddie convinces Buck to seize the day post-lightning strike by making a bucket list and helping him make his wishes a reality, from the smallest hopes to the biggest dreams. With a heaping of Buckley-Diaz family and firefam time, so much pining and longing and heart...and the most sweetly loving tree root metaphor I've ever read. Now with a gorgeous follow up fic to answer some of those lingering questions!

so far away but still so near by @exhuastedpigeon yes, yessss Eddie and Lucy and Ravi bestieism. In which, based on Frank's advice, 'Eddie Diaz learns who he is outside of being a father, builds some new friendships, and loves his best friend.' I really loved the dynamic that Eddie built up here, his tentative steps into finding friends outside of the support system he'd previously relied on, and the way it peeled back new facets of himself in order to love his loudest. Gorgeously written as always! Ravi and Lucy are just absolute bestie goals.

I know the words, I know the sounds by @try-set-me-on-fire in which 'Buck and Eddie dance at Tommy’s wedding.' Oh yeah, I see you SalTommy shippers, and I absolutely get it. As does Buck...sometimes the heart just wants what it wants, and what are you gonna do? Exploring the 'what if Tommy's the one to run off with his best friend' prompt to hilarious and heartwarming ends.

good pretender by @likeshipsonthesea an oldie but a goodie circa season 5, in which Buck and Ravi are secret fully platonic friends with casual sex benefits, Eddie pines A LOT, and everyone is just failing to communicate. I love the introspection here, what each character learns about themselves along the way, and how everything is eventually worked out. Give me season 8 Ravi main please show, I'm begging.

Dazai's Diary!!!

July 18th, 2024

Ah, another delightful day in Yokohama, filled with the usual chaos, despair, and, of course, my unsuccessful attempts at a dramatic, yet poetic, exit from this world.

8:00 AM: Woke up to Atsushi banging on my door, screaming something about another mission. Honestly, can't a man die in peace around here? I told him I was busy contemplating the beauty of a double suicide, but he didn't seem to appreciate my artistic vision.

9:00 AM: Dragged myself to the Agency, where Kunikida immediately started lecturing me about punctuality and responsibility. I responded by suggesting we write a poem together about the fleeting nature of life. He didn't seem impressed. Such a shame; I thought he'd enjoy the literary exercise.

10:30 AM: Our mission today involved chasing down a particularly slippery mafia informant. I suggested we try to recruit him to the dark side – after all, who wouldn't want to join the Armed Detective Agency with its promise of constant peril and existential dread? Chuuya would have agreed with me, I'm sure. We do make quite the dynamic duo.

1:00 PM: Lunch was the usual: ramen and a side of existential pondering. Kyouka joined me, and we discussed the philosophical implications of living one's life in pursuit of meaning. She seemed to be more interested in the dumplings, though. Kids these days.

3:00 PM: Got into a minor skirmish with the Port Mafia. Ran into Chuuya, and as always, our reunion was a mix of insults and grudging admiration. He still hasn’t accepted my invitation to a double suicide. Maybe one day he’ll see the romantic potential.

5:00 PM: Back at the Agency, I decided to pull a prank on Ranpo-san by hiding all his sweets. Watching him panic was the highlight of my day. Eventually, I relented and returned them – even I have a heart, believe it or not.

7:00 PM: Ended the day with some paperwork (which I promptly delegated to Tanizaki). Spent the evening musing about life, death, and the possibility of reincarnation. Maybe in my next life, I’ll come back as a cat. Cats have it good.

All in all, it was a day like any other in the tumultuous life of Dazai Osamu. Full of fleeting moments, grand existential crises, and the occasional glimpse of something that almost resembles happiness. Until tomorrow, dear diary.

What kinds of fics do you like to write? I love to write fics that are Dean x Reader/You. The "reader" is typically also an OC and they typically have some bizarre 1-in-a-million trait. I love writing series with lots of parts and typically have a slow burn filled with fluff, angst, and all sorts of fun little things.

Is there something you have not written but would like to try? A casefic. I actually want to incorporate it in the final part of my longfic, and I really want to get the early seasons aesthetic on point. It's so difficult to verbally describe something that we're so used to seeing visually: the gloomy shots, the dingy motels, the impala parked in front of a small town home in the rain, etc. It would be lovely to discuss on how to best write visual / cinematographic descriptions like that! Also, I'm not very good at detective-style writing, so I'm finding it quite the challenge to write a 'solve a case and defeat the monster of the week' fic.

Our fifth theme for the Ladies of HP Fest is Character Chic! This is a unique opportunity for character studies or stories in which characterization is central to the plot. This theme is all about exploring what makes a character who she is - what made this character the way she is? Why does she do what she does in canon? How did she become the character we know and love? 

Prompt ideas:

Backstories: what happened before we met these characters in canon? 

Motivation: what motivates this character? Why is that her motivation?

Personality: how would you describe this character’s personality? Why?

In an AU . . . if (insert event here) had gone differently, how would this character have turned out? (Ex: if Merope Gaunt had lived, if Andromeda had never met Ted, if Ginny hadn’t received Riddle’s diary, if Petunia had treated Harry like a true son or a loved nephew, etc.)

Fics and stories: if you put (insert character here) into a new context or situation, how would she react?

Guidelines and rules below the cut:

Writing/creating: Minimum fic word count for the main fest is 200*; no artwork 'time' amount, but use your best judgment to show something that took effort. The full rule list can be found here, and the FAQ list can be found here.

i bought a 1st class pass for 15 travel days within 2 months — i got the mobile pass, but you can pay extra for the classic paper diary

this is the pass i bought last time (also in a sale!) and it worked like a dream! 1st class costs more but i got it for a few reasons:

i generally didn't reserve seats unless required, and on most trains there were almost always plenty of seats in 1st class

i used the eurostar to/from london (reservation compulsory) - with a 2nd class pass you can only get standard seats, with a 1st class pass you can get standard or premier. didn't know exactly what train home i was getting, so wanted a little more flexibility

i wanted to treat myself lol (a lot of countries include food service to your seat + free access to the customer lounge)

when you buy a pass you don't need to use it immediately! (in fact, the passes in this sale aren't valid until september, to encourage "off-season" travel)

seat61.com is absolutely essential for planning purposes — everything from "how to get between these specific cities" to "where to find the left luggage lockers at this one station" to "ok, your train got cancelled, but don't panic, here's what to do". i owe this man SO much is2g

i stayed in hostels pretty much everywhere, except for one city where i stayed with friends, two nights where i was on sleeper trains, and one city where i went for a hotel that was honestly worse than the hostel would have been.

(hostels may be more or less familiar depending on where you're from, but they're usually not so bad and they cut down accommodation a LOT)

In 2023 I was at an extremely low point mentally in my life. I had a very well crafted plan to kill myself sometime in July, a meaningless day not near any special events. The first week of August I had decided that if things weren't better by July 29, I'd take my life. (I know I gave myself a lot time, but in my state I had found some symbolism and I missed the date, it's unimportant) On August 14th i had a complete meltdown brought on by some intense dysphoria, exasperated by the depression and stress I was dealing with. I really fucked up my hand that day before work. And I went in and opened the office I worked at, I had my hand wrapped in paper towels and duct tape wearing a glove so I wouldn't bleed all over. Something clicked while I sat at my desk waiting for my manager to get in so I could leave to get stitches. 1) I couldn't lie to my partner at the time, I would have to tell her what happened. 2) I seriously needed to get help.

When she got home I told her why I left work early and why I needed stitches. We immediately scheduled an appointment so I could get on antidepressants and I could ask my GP for therapists recommendations (I tried on my own to find one but they were pretty bad flops). Fast forward a couple weeks my meds are starting to work. Therapy is helping a lot. I'm not convinced I want to live but I'm not rotting away like I was .

Fast forward to now. My progress hasn't been linear, I've had my set backs here and there. But last week in therapy for the first time in my life I told my therapist I can see myself making it to 30 and beyond. I didn't get here alone, but it's July 29, 2024 and I'm happy to be here. I'm thankful for everyone that has shown me so much love and helped me along the way. I'm thankful for everyone I have in my life at this moment. They've made it worth living. I don't know if anyone will read this. But if you've made it this far, take it from someone who used to think "it gets better" was bullshit and not for them. It actually does and it can, and it probably won't be easy but don't give up. You have to live, you have to love yourself and those around you. You don't have to go through everything alone.

Idk, it felt weird to not acknowledge today and Tumblr is a bit like a diary for me at times. So thanks for reading I suppose. I hope if you needed some hope this gave you some. I'm sorry if you are or ever were that low. It's not easy and I love you.

life update

hi!!! this is me presenting a proof of life post (after being away for a few months) 🥺

the first half of the year has been very very challenging for me, and it's mainly why i ended up not posting something after april this year

april - may

i had some personal things come up in late march and majority of its aftermath was severely felt in april -- that's probably the only thing i remember from that month. may was a pretty weird time since i though everything would be okay by then, but it turns out it was the mark of a 'point of no return' for me. i had my 24th birthday and it's probably the worst i've ever experienced, but i don't think i'll ever let allow myself to forget what happened since it's another mark of growing up for me.

some personal stuff aside, i've managed to watch some movies during those months (and it's mostly to distract myself from the bad vibes i've been experiencing). for april, my white boy of the month was roger daltrey -- i adore him a lot. i can't remember how i ended up listening to the who during that time, but i really loved their 'sell out' album (listening to it for the fist time was an Experience) and i ended up watching their concerts during most nights. my favorite first watches in april were: Class Rank (2017), Snack Shack (2024), Tommy (1975), Lisztomania (1975), and McVicar (1980).

for may, i only ended up watching 6 movies with leo dicaprio as my semi-white boy of the month -- i started watching some of his movies in late may because we've had rainy weeks and i thought his movies were fit for a rainy day. my favorite first watch was: Catch Me If You Can (2002). i also saw the basketball diaries (1995) that month and although it's a 2.5 star review for me, i thought the movie was pretty fitting to watch that month considering what has happened.

june

it felt like i was on a limbo last june, but i did manage to finish a journal. i started writing things down on a spare notebook in late april and i finished it all up in june, it was therapeutic and it made me motivated to keep a journal not for my future self, but to help my present self. i guess that may be the reason why i haven't been writing life updates here, i wanted to try writing things down for myself first to process everything and then filter out what i really feel about things (?), also scrapbooking when you have mementos is really fun. i also met up with some college friends that month and it was really REALLY fun -- i haven't been in touch with so many friends since i graduated so seeing them again gave me a major serotonin boost. i also finished a 500-piece puzzle that month which was this one:

i got 2 puzzle pieces on sale during father's day and i had some time off work so i was really happy i got to finish it (it's the first ever puzzle piece that i've ever finished). the other set was this one which i haven't started yet:

another major thing that's happened in june was the fact that i sadly have to give up my phone since someone lost theirs, so i opted to use my old phone, which, fun fact: i got for my 18th birthday. it's still pretty strong (except for the weak chipset for current apps), but it's still really usable (to my surprise). it made me remember how much i've been through with that phone and i think i won't give it up yet because of its sentimental value and the day it retires will probably be really sad for me. i'm now a fan of using devices until it dies down instead of constantly upgrading, i think it's really fascinating to see how long they'll wear out (which is a weird thing to say coming from someone w a job like mine ??).

anyway, i saw some matthew mccounaghey movies that month and i still can't spell his last name properly. my favorite first watches were: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007), and St. Elmo's Fire (1985)

july

after watching st. elmo's fire in late june, i found out that andrew mccarthy made the Brats documentary and it was funny for me because i read his memoir last year. but the documentary still manage to make me miss him so i ended up reading his book 'Just Fly Away', it wasn't that great but, hey, it's andrew mccarthy. this july, i also tried to read more books for some reason and i ended up buying my workmate's old tablet -- it still works fine and i'm currently using it as an e-reader. i'm still deciding whether to buy a kindle or not because it's really tempting to get one and because i also wanted to try the display they always brag about... here's my july reading wrap-up!

i haven't seen that much movies this month and it would probably stay that way since i want to read more :) this may be the comeback of bookworm bea

if you've read up until here thanks so so much and pls know that ily. one thing i learned from this experience of being offline is how much i miss being part of little communities where ppl get to share stuff they like :( i haven't been part of something for so long and i really want to try joining again, but don't really know where to start... i know the easiest may be here on tumblr but i find it really hard to join and gain mutuals here :( the easiest may be on twitter/x but i think everything is so noisy over there nowadays (not just because there's so much people but because of the messy feed and constant adds), i've been thinking of joining bookstagram, but i'm not very ~aesthetic~ enough and i feel like everything is mostly likes and followers over there :/

if you can suggest me something please please do let me know! i really want to make friends w ppl love movies, reading, and exercising! (those are the things that i do in my free time often!!)
