ah, coincidentally it's one of the patterns that I drew (mostly) and not one that I downloaded from Clip Studio Assets.

It's something that many digital art programs (though not all) are capable of doing, and depending on the program you viewers at home are using, look up tutorials on how to do seamless patterns for that program. The process between doing it in Photoshop as I recall and doing it in Clip Studio are quite different, though you can get similar results with both of them.

Basically, I took an existing grid pattern with dashed lines that I had downloaded and hand drew the anchor in the centre. I made CSP's grid lines visible and separated the image into quadrants, made a selection of each quadrant, and copied and pasted that "piece" of the anchor before moving them into the correct corners. Then, I saved the entire image as clip studio material (turning tiling on) and put it in the materials catalogue in a place I'd be able to find it again.

It's on a transparent background, but I have changed it to black so you can see what the original image looks like:

It's not a perfect drawing, but since it's usually smaller it doesn't look as messy when tiled.

When applying it to the image, I have a separate layer for the shirts, so I just pop the pattern on top and apply a clipping mask (and make sure to mask it out of anyone else's shirts). I usually have to apply the pattern 2-3 times because sometimes a character will be closer or farther away in the context of a comic. In an illustration, I may still apply a pattern multiple times to re-orient it along the cut of the fabric (i.e. the collar and the sleeves might face a different direction than the body of the shirt).

Hi there! I will try to answer this as best I can.

If the question is how to mimic Yuji Uekawa's style I'm sure there's much better guides out there than I can make, basically you want the area right next to your highlight to be the darkest part so it really pops.

If the question is how to colour like this using wax crayons, the bad news is I don't have any on me at the moment so I can't demo it. The good news is

1. I saved a few work in progress shots of this piece and can try to explain what I did and

2. the same principles usually apply to pencil crayons (coloured pencils for the americans) and you can find lots of tutorials on blending pencil crayons that are very similar. This is one that I like that uses prismacolours, which are wax based and very soft like crayons.

The basic idea is, you want to start with very light pressure and build up layers. Use mid range and darker colours first, and then blend lighter colours on top of them. You want to "burnish" the colours by rubbing the lighter colour on top of the others in circles, you can also try using your finger, a q-tip or a paper towel for this although it might lift some of the colour off. Be careful though, because you can only do a limited number of layers before it's too difficult to add more!

I started with pencil and then used yellow to start with any area that is warm coloured. yellow is very light so it's a good colour to start with in case you make mistakes. It also is the base of the highlight for yellow/gold as well as orange, red, etc.

you can see i have started gently and lightly layering orange on top of the peachy and red parts, and then a red-brown colour for shadows.

I've also started the darker parts of the white areas, leaving the highlights as bare paper and then lightly pressing a purple or a grey to create the dark shadows.

here i have VEEEERY lightly started going in with a bit of purple and grey where the dark parts on shadow are going to be. You can also see I have started to blend out some of the orange and the white gloves. I've also started to make the reds more red.

getting a little bit darker now, i'm being very careful to keep light on the midtone and then press really hard where the shadows are.

to be honest i didn't really know what i was doing with the background, I just chose some colours i liked and started to throw them in here and there to create the space background. Again, I started with yellow for the highlights in the green chaos emerald and then started adding the darker tones before going in with the yellow again on top to blend it.

i've added more bright colours to the background and started messing around trying to draw the moon, it was tricky! You can't see in this shot but after this, for the stars, I think i actually took the edge of a ruler to "scratch" them in. out of the darkest parts of the background.

that's all the photos I have! I hope that helps, I can try to clarify what I did. My only other advice is to be patient - i actually find crayons REALLY DIFFICULT to work with compared to pencil crayons because it's really hard to get the details and very easy to accidentally blend colours you don't want to and make a mess. It also takes a long time to layer things up, i think I did this over a few days while I was home for the holidays.

Like I've seen artists always mention about how they scan traditional drawing and upload them to their computer but like how??? Step One: Draw a Drawing

i’m using scrap paper because i’m lazy and because sometimes fitting a sketchbook in a scanner is a hassle because you might have to hold it in place. (There are sketchbooks like grumbacher which come with removable tabs that i’d recommend for stuff you want to scan but dont want to tear out of your sketchbook.)

Step Two: Pop it in your All in One Printer/Scanner that you totally definitely maybe have (or borrow someone else’s, you can do this for free at your local library and tbh their scanners are probably bigger) And Make Sure It’s Facing the Right Way Please

Step Three: Find the cables for your all in one printer/scanner that has been in storage for 3 years and actually hasn’t met your computer and needs to be introduced to it and thus you need to download the scanner app and oh my god this took slightly longer than expected aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

(a newer printer/scanner would be easier but mine is an oldboi and my computer has had some issues in the past so it’s a few apps short of a brain) (Oldboi scanner connects to laptop-kun via a USB cable because it pre-dates wireless printers that are much more common these days)

There is a button on the scanner I could press, but it’s probably actually better and easier to do it by opening the scanner app on the computer because you should preview your scan first in order to crop it and make sure it all fits and isn’t at a weird angle etc etc.

Step Four: Preview your image and make any adjustments necessary. I’ve cropped it but I’m not messing with the settings (the resolution would be important if you plan to print the image later and you might want to change it from colour to greyscale, but if you forget you can still do this in your editing program of choice really easily.

Step 5: Hit that scan button

and voila, your scanner has created an image that you can save, put on a usb stick, email to yourself, print, or whatever.

The scanner did a pretty good job of ignoring the big smudge i’d made by accident near his face, but I will want to open this up in an editing program like CSP to make my sketch easier to see. Scanning tends to wash things out a little (and with reflective material it doesn’t always show up well)

My guess is that fewer people have printer/scanners these days because so much “scanning” can be done with a phone - there are scanner apps you can download to your phone that are a little more precise than just using the camera app and can take scans of things larger than would fit in a printer/scanner, I just don’t have patience for them and haven’t really used them.

Step 7: Editing your drawing

I won’t go into this because it depends on what program you use to edit but It usually helps to adjust the brightness/contrast of the lineart layer (I have this under Edit > Tonal Correction but it might be in a different spot in other programs)

and if your program also has level correction that’s really helpful with cleaning up lineart

as you can see it’s picked up all the gross smudges - so i move around these arrows to try to get them as clear as possible : ) I think the arrows are for white, grey and black respectively (or at least, bright, midtone, and dark).

in csp what I would do is hit “convert brightness to opacity” which should make all the white areas transparent so you can colour under the line art. You can usually achieve something similar by changing the layer to “Multiply” in other programs.

voila! Now you can use the sketch as is, draw over it or under it, make copies, whatever you want.

How do you adapt colour palettes to specific characters? Like drawing a character in a colour pallet other thain their own? Idk how and it makes me angry.

are you talking about colour palette challenges i’ve done? where it’s a random palette? the trick is you gotta stop thinking in terms of ‘his hair is red’ and ‘his eyes are green’, start thinking in terms of ‘his hair is medium’ and ‘his eyes are light’. Colours are a lot more versatile than they seem at first, and that whole debacle about the friggin ‘blue/white or black/gold dress is a great example of that. Things change colours in different lights and when they’re next to other colours, and can even look different from person to person!

It’s not easy to wrap your head around and I still have trouble with it, but that’s why colour palette challenges are a great exercise in combining colours and also training in hue/saturation and why I like doing them so much. 

so let’s do an example with ed because i draw him a lot: 

This is what I’m gonna call “Accurate Colours”. I tried to keep it simple but this is the sort of colour scheme I use for ed in simple comics where there’s not a ton of dramatic lighting or anything and even then i still kind of use it as a base. His hair is brown, his eyes are hazel, and city hall behind him is painted with roughly “correct” colours- at least for a late morning/early afternoon as it looked when I was there today. So let’s say we want a random colour palette that kind of has a summery mood (i gave him an ice cream because we’re having a heatwave right now rip)

Here’s a random palette off colourlovers that has the sort of mood I might like to convey, you might notice it has a lot of contrasting colours and that’s part of the reason I chose it. 

The trick is to stop thinking in terms of “that brown on the left has to be his hair and eyes because it is brown” or “that dark blue has to be the water because water is blue”. Instead of “has to”, think “can”. The trick I use with colour palettes if I’m having a lot of trouble is to desaturate them and order them from light to dark- I can show you this visually although I’m more or less at the point that my brain can do this automatically for me from practice.

This is a bit tricky because the palette doesn’t have the same range of tones as my drawing- it’s going to change the mood and the contrast but it’s not impossible!

Here’s a version where I basically went from light to dark and tried to replace the lightest colour with the lightest colour on the palette and so on:

these might not have been decisions I would have made if i was colouring it from scratch, but it’s not too terrible. It’s also (coincidentally) got a couple colours (like the blue of the pyramid and of the sky and water) that match the original quite well. However, there are some problems I have: the trees have almost no contrast with the sky and parts of the building, and what was supposed to be fountain spray kind of look like creepy misshapen hands emerging from the void. Sometimes you have to use your own judgement in addition to this simple method- try different colour combos and see what looks good next to each other!

Here’s a new version where I took what I liked from the version above and tried some other things to make it more visually interesting

I usually pick one colour at a time and try to place that colour all over the image to make it visually interesting- I did the hot pink last because it was the most ‘popping’ colour to me so in this atmosphere I didn’t want to overuse it- you can do the same thing with any of the colours you like depending on what mood you are going for! but look closely- isn’t it interesting how this pale red kind of looks brown in this combination and the blue sort of “echoes” the green in the original? No idea why that is- opposites on the colour wheel maybe- but cool.

There’s still something I’m bothered about with colours that are too close together- so in that case in a simple drawing like this, some patterns won’t go amiss! Here’s my final version:

As you can see I ended up changing some things, and colour combinations i was originally unsure of (like the orange in the fountain) look a bit more interesting and textured with different amounts and drawings. You can see I added a couple things and changed some colours around as I was working, and that’s totally ok too. I feel like if I wanted to make this a nightime scene, I could have used either dark blue or pink for the sky and orange for the water, for example, and the mood would have been very different even with the same colours- a bit more romantic or quiet. But you never think “oh man that guy’s hair is blue is he an alien’ because it’s obviously a limited palette and he matches the environment.

You can also try having warm and cool colours split up between different sections, like foreground and background as I did here:

The principle is the same if you’re just doing a colour palette of a character without an environment, but if you pay attention to textures and shading or how flat colours behave next to each other, you can get a lot of different moods and effects without it ever looking like an “accurate” palette. If you mess up the hues too much…

Notice something? this is a fine colour combo- the skin is a great midtone even though no human usually has blue skin- but because his hair is light it’s giving the impression that this is a guy who is either an alien or at least is a different character who has tanned skin and bleached hair- the super sonic recolour of ed but not ed xD (it doesn’t help that I haven’t coloured the background to match him to his environment out of laziness) but we can fix that a little:

You can still use orange in his hair without making him look blonde and a simple colour swap of the eyes to make them darker than his skin makes it work better. As you can see, there are nearly infinite combinations and if something is not working it probably is one or two colours just “out of sync” with the others. This is also why having a simple design with only a few colours is effective- it’s easier to remember how to draw and it’s easier to ‘translate’ into a different palette! (and if you’re working traditionally you can easily blend colours too… just sayin). 

If you need a good starting point before diving into crazy colours, try a monochrome palette as a first challenge and only paint in different shades of one colour, or even different saturations could be interesting if they’re not too close together. 

So yeah, I hope that answers your question a little and you can sort of start training your brain to think in different ways. Experiment! Make mistakes! Do weird or bad combos on purpose! Have fun!! Paint with the moods and emotions, not with the “correct” colours. :)

This weekend has been so busy i’ve not had time to draw at all so while I’m getting back to that this is just a reminder @ future me that the reason you are so unhappy and dissatisfied with your comics these days is because you no longer plan them out on paper and because you cant see them your composition gets thrown out the window and you feel pressured to conform to a webtoon format you dont understand or prep for without actually doing anything about it so just keep calm carry on and dont be sad about killing a tree now and then if it helps that’s all!!
