Willie Eldon O'Ree CM ONB (born October 15, 1935) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player, best known for being the first Black player in the National Hockey League (NHL). O'Ree played as a winger for the Boston Bruins. O'Ree is referred to as the "Jackie Robinson of ice hockey" for breaking the black colour barrier in the National Hockey League, and has stated publicly that he had met Jackie Robinson when he was younger. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November 2018. Also in 2018, the NHL instituted the annual Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award in his honour, to "recognise the individual who has worked to make a positive impact on his community, culture or society to make people better through hockey." “I stepped onto the ice and I had butterflies in my stomach. The Canadiens were the best team in the league at that time. They were winning Cup after Cup. Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Jacques Plante, Bernie Geoffrion, Doug Harvey … these were superstars of the highest order. The Rocket, in particular, was one of my idols growing up. To share the ice with these guys, and play against them in an NHL game, was surreal. Even more surreal: We won, 3-0. Now, I wasn’t just an NHL player. I was a winner, too.” #Willie Oree #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM #HansPoppeArt #Artist #Toronto #Canada #Hockey #DigitalArt #Portraiture #NHL (at Toronto, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cox5LWCv7FG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Kevin Brereton (born February 20, 1972), better known by his stage name k-os (an acronym for "Knowledge of Self), is a Canadian alternative rapper, singer, songwriter and producer. k-os' music incorporates a wide variety of music genres, including rap, funk, rock, and reggae. The lyrics frequently focus on promoting a "positive message" while at times expressing criticism of mainstream hip hop culture's obsession with money, fame and glorification of violence. A musician as well as a producer, k-os has written and produced nearly every part of all four of his albums. k-os usually performs with a live band, which is traditionally uncommon in the hip hop genre. He sometimes plays guitar and keyboard both during live performances and in the studio. k-os received his first musical exposure with the single "Musical Essence", released in 1995. After the release of his second single "Rise Like the Sun" in 1996, he withdrew from the industry because he was dissatisfied with his musical style. He reappeared briefly in 1999 and released his debut album Exit in 2002. The album received positive reviews but sold relatively few copies. He released his second album Joyful Rebellion in 2004, which received platinum status in Canada. A third album, Atlantis: Hymns for Disco, was released in 2006 and also went platinum. His fourth album, Yes!, was released in 2009. His fifth album Black on Blonde was released in 2013. He released his sixth album, Can't Fly Without Gravity, in 2015. From 1996 to 2016, K-os was the third best-selling Canadian hip hop artist in Canada (behind Drake and Swollen Members). #KevinBrereton #k-os #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM #HansPoppeArt #Artist #Toronto #Canada #DigitalArt #Portraiture (at Toronto, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cocw-OzpxCk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Next time you are standing close to one of these pieces in front of a bus shelter or subway ad... take the time to look at the details of the brush work and colour schemes in detail. These were scanned by the “Mercedes” of scanners, and once blown up... you can see every detail I have obsessed over for almost a year now. I was quite frankly taken by surprise that... that much detail was available! . #hanspoppeart #iamanewcanadian #artist #painting #portraiture #artist #Illustrator #mississauga #Toronto #freelancedesigner #freelance #acrylicpainting #artoftheday #creative #instaart #instaartist #artwork #inspiration #nonforprofit #color #colour #art #artwork #hanspoppeart #iamanewcanadian #artist #painting #portraiture #artist #Illustrator #mississauga #Toronto #freelancedesigner #freelance #acrylicpainting #artoftheday #creative #instaart #instaartist #artwork #inspiration #nonforprofit #color #colour #art #artwork (at Toronto, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw-Yt9cgZ4M/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ug87d2qmyhbd

Mario Calla, Executive Director, says the campaign is unlike anything COSTI has done before. “This campaign shows how the success of every individual builds a strong and prosperous Canada,” he says. “The portraits of each individual are stunning because they have been painted by a talented artist who immigrated to Canada in 1987 from Tanzania. His passion shows through in every stroke and the stories are so uplifting.” . ABOUT THE ARTIST - HANS POPPE Hans Poppe is a contemporary artist whose practice includes design, painting, illustration and printmaking. He has enjoyed a successful career working in the graphic design and advertising industry, graduating from Humber College in 2002 with honours, before returning to studies at the Toronto School of Art to focus on painting in 2008. His latest paintings, combining traditional art mediums with African culture, are inspired by his Tanzanian heritage and fascination with the untold stories of day-to-day African life. Hans currently works for the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee as their sole designer, when he’s not working or painting, Hans also mentors at risk youth, working with The Remix Project. This work pairs young artists with mentors and provides Hans another channel to engage with the community through art and design. . In his own words By Hans Poppe . “I was eight years old when my family moved to Canada seeking political asylum. I learned how to speak English watching the TV show ‘Cheers’ and from having to speak English at school. We were always raised to be proud of our heritage and culture. We spoke Swahili at home and ate our traditional foods. As a child, I loved learning about our new country and although we faced some racism ... I also remember how encouraging, generous and loving people were to our family. My siblings and I were always brought up to be grateful for this country and to make sure we use all our opportunities, resources and education to the best of our abilities. I proudly identify as Canadian. I know what makes this nation an amazing country.” Learn more about Hans on his website https://www.hanspoppe.com/ #hanspoppeart #iamanewcanadian #artist #painting #portraiture #art (at Toronto, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw70qAWAkJC/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=o7816zzxyqpb

Shayan fled Pakistan because he feared for his safety as someone from an often-persecuted faith. He was in his early 20s when he arrived in Canada all alone, ready to start a new life. But he faced a challenge he never expected to be as hard—finding work. "I applied for jobs but always got the same response, 'You have potential, but unfortunately … ’" Shayan’s degree in economics from a respected university in Pakistan was overlooked and he didn’t have any Canadian work experience. "I started feeling depressed," he says. “But then I heard about COSTI Immigrant Services and I knew it was my only hope.” . @Costi_org youth mentoring coach, Tejal Solanki, recommended United Way’s netWORKS Program to help Shayan build a better résumé, practice interviews and, most importantly, meet contacts at job fairs and networking events. After attending several workshops and networking—to his delight—landed a position in his field just two months after his first meeting at COSTI. . Today, Shayan works as a contact centre service representative, helping bank clients sort out credit issues. He hopes to apply for a financial analyst position in a couple of years before shooting for his dream job of being an economist at the Bank of Canada. Shayan says he’ll use his new connections to make that dream a reality. "I have learned that any connection can be helpful, and with the right contacts, you’ll find opportunities." #hanspoppeart #iamanewcanadian #artist #painting #portraiture #artist #Illustrator #mississauga #Toronto #freelancedesigner #freelance #acrylicpainting #artoftheday #creative #instaart #instaartist #artwork #inspiration #nonforprofit #color #colour #art #artwork (at Wellesley station) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw7Q4nLA5BM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1sjllt3rb495f
