Font Research:

Following my critique, I first wanted to look into new body copy text that could perhaps relate more to Joseph Churchward. As he was really entering his career and creating typography from the 1960s onwards, I decided to look into body copy fonts, created in the 1960s. From my research I found:

-Antique Olive - designed by Roger Excoffon, 1962-1966 -Eurostile - designed by Aldo Novarese, 1962 -Serifa - designed by Adrian Frutiger, 1967 -Impact - designed by Geoffrey Lee, 1965 -Syntax - designed by Hans Eduard Meier, 1968 -Impressum - designed by Walter Baum, 1964 -Egyptian 505 - designed by André Gürtler, 1966

After testing these, I didn’t mind Antique Olive and Serifa when I applied them to my spreads, but I wasn’t entirely sold on either so wanted to do a little more research before deciding on one.

Jacqueline De Poortere - Type Report

Syntax is a humanist sans-serif font that was designed by Hans Eduard Meier in 1968 and released soon after by the Stempel Type Foundry. Hans Eduard Meier spent his life dedicated to designing typefaces and spent 36 years teaching typography and writing at the School of Design in Zurich. This font is used for a few German Newspapers, such as OÖ Nachrichten, and is frequently used for books because of its clear and simple design.

Doko was inspired by cartoons and comics designed by Ondrej Jób. Jób’s goal while creating this design was to create a serif typeface and to “have some fun” while working on the design in order to create a unique typeface. Doko is described as a design for magazines that balances “the thin line between the expressiveness of display typefaces and the perfect functionality of text face.” (Fontstand)

Its a san serif typeface. Designed by Eric Gill in 1928. A year after its release the London Railway used it for all its posters and became an immediate success.

Syntax

Syntax is a sans-serif typeface designed by Hans Eduard Meier in 1968, and later released by D. Stempel for foundry casting. The uppercase of Syntax has a wide proportion, and the terminals which are not parallel to the baseline create a sense of animation. To create a visually singular designer, its skeleton has balanced weights.

Usage: Especially suitable for metal design

Optima

Optima is a sans-serif typeface designed by Hermann Zapf for the purpose of both body text and titling. The strokes of Optima are variable in width, and therefore it is a modulated-stroke sans-serif. The proportions of the lowercase and its feature of the continuous reading application is fulfilled by the means of photography and it is the first German typeface not based on the standard baseline alignment.

The 100 All Time Best Fonts

FontShop presents: The 100 all time Best Fonts since Guternberg, as selected by their users and an international jury.

How have they rated the font?: The review of immeasurable qualities is tricky. How does one measure aesthetic quality, the benefit of an item, its value to humanity?  How does one determine a list of the best fonts of all time? They tried to do this by using on objective and two subjective measurement patters weighted as follows:

FontShop Sales Figures: 40%

Historical Value/Meaning: 30%

Aesthetic Qualities: 30%

The evaluation consisted exclusively of licensed or ëcommercialí fonts.  Free fonts or operating system fonts were not considered, nor were fonts integral to standard software (i.e. Arial, Verdana, etc.). Font variations, which over the centuries have been individually interpreted by various Foundries, were uniquely evaluated as a class and the best variant was entered into the main judging process.
