NBC Hannibal: Dogs and Dinners

There is a tv trope "adopt the dog", which helps us like a character and see their good side. Will's character exposition is clear: he saves a dog and cares for a big family of strays. The dogs manifest his good sides, humanity. However, we are also hinted at Will's repressed dark instincts, because domestic dogs are still animals that hunt and kill. They are pack hunters too, and Will's fighting pose in the finale is "on fours", "a wild dog". The domestic and the wild co-exist.

It would be unfair not to demonstrate a humane side of Hannibal during his introduction. We see him working as a psychiatrist. His job almost mirrors Will's job: Will is an empath who analyses psychopaths to put them in jail, and Hannibal is a psychopath who analyses normal people to help them fix their lives. But not all of his patients are actually recovering, and his approach is unorthodox. I don't think his job is a true reflection of his humane side. As in the case with Will, we should look into his house and see the his own character exposition, just as intimate, instinctual and double-sided.

It's his cooking. At first sight it's merely a depiction of his darkness. But if we break down the idea of cooking to the basic instincts (like with Will's dogs), we will feel Hannibal's humanity. For him, cooking is not only eating. It's feeding. And Hannibal likes to feed. Feeding is a paternal instinct, a social, protective behavior. And we have seen many times in the show that Hannibal has paternal instincts, likes socialising and can be protective not only on his behalf. Hannibal uses feeding for manipulation as well, yes, but even in those cases feeding people is his idea of creating connection and affection.

Here are a few examples. After Jack asks Hannibal in the first episode to be gentle with Will, Hannibal, the stag that he is, does the opposite: invades Will's hotel room uninvited and puts him on his antlers with compliments and home-made breakfast that fits Will's simple tastes. When Hannibal tries make Abigail attached to him, he cooks her "breakfast for dinner" and mushroom tea. He makes coffee for Will, when he's in hospital, makes soups to Will, when he's unwell. He likes when someone helps him in the kitchen.

Hannibal doesn't invite people for dinner only when encessary. He does it at every opportinity. He has many "friends" in cultural circles that he loves to entertain. And he feeds them human meat, which is rare and risky to get. There's cynicism in that behaviour but also a need to share and connect at a high cost. Hannibal is generous and hospitable.

Hannibal "likes to eat in a company" and yet it's never simply that. Extended cooking scenes, exquisite dishes and lavish dinners - too lavish even for a small gathering… He’s obsessed with cooking. It's a manifestation of his darkness... and aching humanity. Eating and feeding co-exist.

There may be some evidence to this in canon. In the book/movie “Hannibal rising” (both written/scripted by the original author of "Hannibal") little Lecter starved with Mischa during the war. Mischa was his first beloved human, and he became her parental figure after premature death of their parents. A special emphasis is made in the movie on Hannibal feeding her. His experience of hunger was not only about misery but also love and caring for another person and putting their needs above your own.

Will: Have you ever been a father?

Hannibal: I was to my sister. She was not my child, but she was my charge. She taught me so much about myself. Her name was Mischa.

Before the finale Bedelia says her famous line:

"Could he daily feel a stab of hunger for you and find nourishment at the very sight of you? Yes."

This line is a big box to unpack, but a big idea is that Hannibal is harmless now. He no longer needs to eat Will - or indulge into cannibalism with him - to connect. His love overpowers trauma and killer instincts. In the finale he does exactly what Bedelia predicted: he finds nourishment at the very sight of Will in his house, only sharing wine like in the good old days, and Will feels safe and protected in his presence. And this is a really nice touch to Hannibal's character development.

Hannibal Lecter Sr.

Hannibal Lecter Sr. would be highly pleased by your dedication to the domestic sphere, your grace, and your willingness to play the perfect partner. He values appearances and control, so having someone like you—who mirrors those values in the most elegant and traditional way—would feel like the completion of his carefully crafted image. He would observe your every action with a subtle, pleased smile, particularly admiring how well you maintain the façade of a perfect household. The way you serve lavish dinners without ever complaining, even though you know exactly what kind of meat is being served, would make him smile in satisfaction. Your willingness to support him, even in his more…unconventional habits, would earn you his respect and affection. He would see you as his masterpiece—molded to complement his world perfectly. You would notice how he watches you when you move about the house, quietly proud of how you embody the elegance and sophistication he values so much.

The day he adopted Morgan and Kevin:

Hannibal Sr. had just returned from a long trip abroad and you greeted him with Hannibal Jr. accordingly. He waited until the both of you were alone before telling you he needs to talk to you. You thought it was perhaps to dismiss you and you started panicking internally. Hence, you started cooking his favourite meal and decided to indirectly push the conversation for later. But, Hannibal Sr. could almost smell your fear and wrapped his arms around you from behind and rested his chin on your shoulder to peek over your shoulder at what you were cooking—satisfied at the way you were so flawlessly cooking and preparing his favourite dish to somehow appease him for a mistake you had never committed…

He kissed the back of your shoulder and you shivered. Had he grown bored of you ? Were you going to become dinner instead of preparing it ? Was he…?

But, he suddenly interrupted you in your silent worries as he whispered.

"How would you feel about becoming a mother…little lamb ?"

Your eyes widened and the spoon you were holding clattered inside the pan—spluttering a few droplets of sauce on your apron. You were stunned. But you quickly turned around and smiled at him.

"A mother ?"

Hannibal Sr. nodded with a smile.

"Yes. A mother, my dear. Would you consider it ?"

You didn’t need time to consider. You were so happy and hugged him.

"Yes ! Yes. I would be so happy to be a mother. Your children would be my pride and joy. And I would take great care of them."

Hannibal Sr. chuckled and wrapped his arms around you.

"Good. Now, take a look outside…"

…And that’s how you became the mother of Morgan and Kevin Hannibal Lecter.

Hannibal Lecter Jr.

Hannibal Lecter Jr. would be both intrigued and amused by your devotion. At first, he might question the authenticity of your 1950s housewife persona, wondering if it was a mask as carefully constructed as his own. He would test your devotion subtly, seeing if there was more beneath the surface. Your steadfast loyalty, however, would eventually win him over.

As someone who is hard to read and deeply distrustful of others, he would be drawn to your consistent care and willingness to love without judgment. He wouldn’t show his appreciation very much, but in quiet moments, you’d catch glimpses of how much he values you. Perhaps in the way he gently places a hand on your shoulder when you serve him tea or how he lets you lean against him after a long day.

Though he wouldn’t verbalize it often, he would come to deeply appreciate the tranquility you bring into his life. You are the calm amidst the chaos in his mind, and in time, he would allow himself to feel safe in your presence.

"You make the chaos…quieter," he murmured one night, watching you with an intensity only he could hold. You smiled at him and intertwined your fingers.

"And you make my life whole."

You had found each other at a time where you both didn’t think that you would find the right companion. Hannibal had just lost Will and you had failed to find someone who would accept you the way you were…But then, you had seen that man on the sea shore—half-dead—and you had immediately sought to rescue him.

After that, Hannibal Jr. had been bound to you through this unpaid debt and sworn to be your perfectly dutiful partner until death…For that was the closest to love you would both ever get.

Morgan Hannibal

Morgan would admire your devotion, not just because it benefits him, but because it reflects his own values of duty and control. As a medical doctor, Morgan is meticulous, calculative, and demanding of perfection, and you fit that role in his life seamlessly. Your ability to maintain the household, support him, and look elegant while doing it would make you indispensable to him. He would have a deep respect for how well you manage everything and would love the feeling of being the center of your world. In his mind, it’s only natural that someone as clever and devoted as you would see him as worthy of such care. He wouldn’t hesitate to acknowledge your work, though sometimes his praise may come off as more clinical than romantic.

However, despite his occasional coldness, Morgan would be fiercely protective of you. In his mind, you are his perfect partner—someone who makes his life run smoothly and adds an air of sophistication to his already successful persona. You looked up at him as you ate and when his eyes were looking away, the grip on your knife would tighten. You had fallen for him—true. But that didn’t mean you appreciated being called a doll. Morgan knew that better than anyone, but he still loved to repeat it again and again to earn himself a reaction that wasn’t prime and proper. His eyes would keep glancing at you and send you that insufferable half-smirk that would make you look back down at your plate and clench your teeth. But…that’s what he liked. To see you like this. Because even though Morgan could be cold and merciless—he enjoyed greatly the sight of how it affected you.

You were so deep in thought, you failed to hear your beloved partner approach you from behind and bend down to whisper in your ear.

"Do not forget to smile, Y/N. Or I will have no trouble finding someone else to fulfil your duties."

You glared at him.

You hated him. But at the same time…there was no other man who could make your heart thump loudly in your chest the way he did. And the man knew it more than anyone. That was the reason he had accepted you. Because he knew there would be no one as devoted as you.

Kevin Hannibal

Kevin would find your obsession with the whole housewife thing to be both adorable and perplexing. At first, he might poke fun at your 1950s housewife tendencies, calling you "old-fashioned" or teasing you when you’re in the kitchen wearing an apron. His blunt nature wouldn’t allow him to take the persona too seriously right away.

However, as time goes on, Kevin would start to see the beauty in how much you care for him and the home you share. He’d come to appreciate the comfort and stability you bring, even if he’s not one to conform to traditional roles himself. Your elegance and grace would contrast with his more chaotic, artistic nature, and he’d find that balance soothing.

While Kevin is fiercely loyal, he’s also blunt and impulsive, and he might occasionally make jabs about your traditional tendencies. But beneath the teasing, there would be a deep sense of love. He’d admire your ability to stay dedicated, even when his impulsiveness might make life difficult at times.

"You know, you’re like a walking vintage ad or something," he joked once while kissing your cheek. "But hell, I wouldn’t trade it for anything."

Peter Hannibal

Peter would be the one most enamored with your care and affection. You, with your loving and devoted nature, would be everything Peter has always longed for. He craves validation, attention, and love—things you give him in abundance. Your tender touch and sweet words would soothe his overactive emotions.

In Peter’s eyes, you would be perfection. He would follow you around like a puppy, always eager for your approval and affection. Every meal you make, every small gesture of love, every single gesture of love or appreciation thrown his way would make his heart swell. You would become the person who makes him feel safe, even in the midst of his emotional storms.

However, Peter’s obsessive nature means he might become too attached. Your role as a perfect partner would feed into his need for someone to love and dote on him constantly. He would cling to you, desperate for the reassurance that you love him as much as he loves you.

"You love me, right Y/N ?" he’d ask constantly, searching your face for any sign of hesitation. "Right ? Come on…Please. Say it. Say you love me. Say you will stay with me. Please." And when you smiled and assured him that yes, you did love him and would stay with him, Peter would sigh with relief, holding onto you with a large grin.

Because he was certain that no matter how many times he’s ask, your answer would be the same.

In all cases, you would serve as the grounding presence in the Hannibals’ lives, the one who brings elegance, order, and tenderness into the dark, complex world of the Hannibal family. Your love and devotion would be both their comfort and their obsession, feeding into the unique needs of each family member in ways only you could provide.

1. Spyderco Harpy

• appears in Hannibal season 3 in Italy .ೃ࿐

The Harpy was designed as a knife for seamen, featuring a karambit style blade that magically cuts right through rope, the serration lending a hand to the task.

Additionally, the Harpy boasts a detailed tip, which can chew through a manner of different materials, probably one of the main reasons why Hannibal found it handy for different...matters. To sum it up: This is not one of his kitchen knives, but rather one he used as a pocket knife in all different kind of situations.

Originally the japanese Spyderco Harpy was designed to accommodate the needs of commercial fishermen. The hawksbill blade is modeled after the talon of the Harpy eagle, allowing for a deliberate pulling cut where the object does not slip off the end of the edge. The hollow-ground blade incorporates SpyderEdge serrations and a thick spine for support. The handle is made of stainless steel with a drying vent, perfect for Hannibal and his exquisite taste…and of course correspondingly expensive. A good 200 euros for this fine tool, everybody. But he seems to be rolling in money, so no problem for our favourite cannibal.

2. Chroma Type 301 style by F. A. Porsche

To be honest I really fell in love with the Spyderco Harpy and didn’t quite think anything could change that. But. When I tell you the design…omg. The Chroma Type 301 knife series was brought to life by F.A. Porsche (yup, the german car guy) and the chef of the decade, Jörg Wörther (austrian chef).

Japanese knives have achieved global recognition for their quality, as the Japanese hold a long tradition in metallurgy. The Japanese metallurgists have elevated the forging and sharpening of the blade into a form of art for hundreds of years, since the era of the notorious Katana swords. On the other hand, Europeans and Americans also make excellent knives, often characterized by superior ergonomics and design, but rarely distinguished for the hardness and sharpness of their blade.

The type 301 knife series by Chroma bridges the gap between Japanese tradition and the European design, this series standing out for its unique design and practical function. Porsche and Wörther closely worked together in order to develop the final shape of the handle, which is optimized for maximum usability. The result is a precision cutting tool. Each knife is carefully weighted to ensure perfect balance in the hand and in combination with the highly ergonomic handle, it feels like an extension of the user’s hand. The Chroma type 301 knives follow faithfully the Japanese philosophy, which dictates a knife to be lightweight and flexible. They are made of high-quality Japanese 301 steel, a relatively lightweight material which has a 56-58 hardness rating in the Rockwell hardness scale. This renders the type 301 knives harder than most of the non-Japanese knives and among the hardest knives within their price range. The increased hardness allows the knife to maintain its sharpness longer and also to slice better.Even though the Chroma type 301 knives are mass produced, they are carefully razorsharp sharpened by the hand of a master. Quality control is performed on one-to-one basis and not through random sampling. And by the way…did I mention the extraordinary design.

3. Kai Shun Knives

4. Global Knives

Global G Series knives are typically put together in what's called a three piece construction. The blade is stamped out of sheets of steel of a proprietary stainless steel alloy, while the two handles are created and welded together separately. The blade and handle are then welded together into one solid piece of stainless steel.

What makes these Global knives a bit unusual is that they start off empty. The blades are welded on without a tang and the handles are actually hollow. Instead, to maintain balance, they are filled with a very precise amount of sand.

Now it's quite unusual and you might just write this off as Japan being Japan and doing things differently because...well, they're Japan, but it seems to work very well for them.

The ability to inject a precise amount of weight (sand, in this case) as needed directly into the knife has led to them getting a reputation or having very precise and excellently balanced knives across their range of products.

That said, ergonomics are always personal.

Global G Series knives tend to feel very lightweight and evenly balanced. Some people tend to prefer a knife that is more weighted to the back for a firmer grip, or to the front for chopping action. This is the classic global knife version, but of course there are various other series one can discover. Unfortunately I am not able to tell the exact version Hannibal uses in the show by just watching...if anyone has an idea let me know!!!

Currently reading: I'm re-reading To Be Devoured by Sara Tantlinger once again and it's thanks to that one nonnie that made me want to go back to it and analyse every single sentence..) and I started reading Rapture by Saint Harlowe which was recommended to me by @rottengurlz - thank you SO MUCH for such amazing book rec, by far I can say that I'm getting so much Hannibal vibes for some reason? JACKSON IS SO.. OH MY FUCKING GOOOOOOD I don't know how to react and i'm fucking screaming IS IT A BOOK OF MY DREAM? The writing style, the religious references, the murderousness and both gentleness. It is... I didn't got very far, but this is very... this is a religious experience, literally! And I'm forever thankful to you for this rec!! 💕

Last thing you ate: Baked Brussels sprouts with maple syrup! As you can see, I have a sweet tooth and I'd sold my soul for anything sweet, but especially for sweet vegetables!

What are you wearing right now: It's very cold (I'M NOT JOKING IT'S LITERALLY 12 DEGREES CELSIUS OUTSIDE AND THERE WERE A !!!!!!LONG THUNDERSTORM!!!!!!! AND I'M SOOOO HAPPY ABOUT IT!!!!!!!) so I'm wearing very old very fur socks that were knitted by my papa (yes, they're a gift for Christmas 2019 and I adore them and would protect them at any cost), orange woolen sweater, woolen home shorts and on top of that... I'm hiding in a very big yellowish autumny blanket with milky white stripes. I'm freezing and I still have my window open wide despite having an obvious fucking fever.

How tall are you: I figured out I'm actually 175 cm tall! It's pretty tall, right?

Piercings: None! I don't even have my ears pierced and I don't want to! There's clip-ons for that and I don't want to feel pain event for a slightest second. But piercings are really cool! I wish I didn't have this wild fear of pain or there were like... septum clip-ons if it makes sense? But yeah, still none and never will be!

Tattoos: None and I'm pretty sure there will never be any!

Glasses/contacts: I still have perfect vision, however! I STARTED KINDA COLLECTING VINTAGE GLASSES WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL SILVER CHAINS! I have three of them now help It's becoming another obsession... They just look cool and not even only on me, but just in general - even in the cabinet! And they have such beautiful and detailed cases ohhhh...

Favourite colour: Ahhh... I'm not sure but maybe... peachy pink? And that gold orange you can see on the painting Café Terrace at Night by the one and only Vincent Van Gogh. BUT PARIS GREEN IS STILL MY OBSESSION FOREVER I LOVE THIS COLOUR!!!!!!! And also, I think It's maroon and wine reds? They look so vampire I just... And so rich if it makes sense? AND GORE AND BLOOD- But aesthetic blood though!

Current obsession: Maid Of Sker & Bloodborne lore and maybe.. cosmic horror in general? Something definitely changed in me after watching Annihilation... But I also love Lovecraftian horror, so It does make a lot of sense!

Any pets: still no pet :,< And I haven't seen my parents dog for months now... I miss her so much and I know they live only couple hours away but I'm deathly scared of publicly busy places especially electric trains and trains in general. I do not have a car and don't plan to and it will be useless anyways, but I'm not ready to deal with very... unstable train schedule and everything yet. I'm just scared but I hope i'd visit them at least for Christmas.

Favourite fictional character: Umm... I don't know now, It might be still Will Graham. I love him.

Last place you traveled: does going to Augsburg which is like.. 1 hour or so from me to see its cathedral once again counts? I just love this place so much, it feels so powerful and so old (which it is, and the architecture is insane. you need to go here to understand and feel it, but It's something so beautiful and it's kinda is my comfort place so...). And yeah, because the trip wasn't as long, I had my earbuds on and was drinking tea on a train and everything went really well! It was two weeks ago and It was like one of the most beautiful 6 hours of my year so far. And, there were a slight rain when I was shopping and walking around, so it's was really amazing. 10000/10 would recommend. ALSO. I bought some handmade brooches here! Its just a comfort town for me if it makes sense? There's so much to see but just calmly walking around feel the best. AND OMG I LOVE BEING HERE WHEN IT'S RAINING OR WHEN IT'S JUST CLOUDY AHHH

Hetalia Headcanons

So, I am a masive fun of creativity that Hetalia gives you, with all the world history headcannoning is practically unlimited and I think it is woderful.

Having said that, I love Austria, day and night, he is my ultimate favourite. And I love to pair nearly everyone with him, I mean, hello, Austria has a lot of history, if you know what I mean. But, I admit I do love him with Prussia or Germany the most. Secondarily, I appreciate him with Hungary, France. Spain and something rare with America (don't ask me, I just have this AU where Gilbert is gone, and because he trained the revolutionary American army - von Steuben, you might want to check this one - Roderich sometimes sees Prussia's manierism in Al, and somehow they just got together).

Anyway, recently I created in my head a whole picture of crossing Hetalia with my ultimate favourite tv show - Hannibal. And you know what, Austria is the perfect Hannibal Lecter. Psychology background? Checked. Sophisticated, slightly narcissistic, handsome guy? Checked. Piano and art? Checked. Cooking? Checked. Like it makes sense. A foreign beautiful devil who plays with others, but everyone is in love with him and they cannot solve the mystery.

Gilbert is Will Graham, a slightly odd, conflicted genius who is sooo deep into Roderich and denial... And Rod loves him too, and he likes to play with him just a little.

Hungary makes perfect Alana Bloom - come on in love with Rod, but later finds a girlfriend.

Last, but not least, Antonio or Vash (not sure yet) would be the perfect Bedelia, Rod's therapist and potentially old flame, and he takes them to Firenze.

I mean, I am no writer, but I would pay good money for this fanfic.

One of my favourite scenes in the show is in episode 2 or 3 of season 1 where Hannibal bashes Alana head against a wall. Because it's shocking. Iirc the first scene we get of hannibal is him preparing human lungs to cook. We KNOW he's a monster, but in the time since we get lulled as viewers into almost forgetting what he is. He blends in so well that when he attacks Alana, you're STILL blindsided.

Something the Hannibal television show does phenomenally, that the books and movies don’t really do at all, is showcase how well he actually blends in.

In the Thomas Harris works, every scene that Doctor Lecter is in manages to make it very clear that he’s dangerous, and everyone else is basically Damocles without being aware of the blade. He’s unsettling even when he’s charming, and the audience is always aware that he is the lion in the room. We can see the swords dangling by the hair over every other character.

But in the show, Hannibal is just a guy, maybe pretentious and nerdy, but charming and kind for the most part. We are taken in with him, just like the other characters. Then, when he does lash out, moving like the predator he is, we’re left absolutely shook, almost ashamed that for a moment we forgot who he is. In the next scene, he’s as soft and charming as ever, and the deception begins again. We slowly fall under the spell again, because he’s just that good. We experience what the characters do, even though we’re granted the behind the scenes knowledge that he’s the villain of the story.

how do you stay so exclusively interested in something for years?

good question! i usually don't haha, at least not exclusively. ive been in a bit of an interest downturn with hannibal for the last little while and engaging more with other fandom content (black sails atm) and non-fandom stuff, but then just last night i felt the urge to seek out some hannigram fic and it was lots of fun again after having a break!

basically ive found that lingering in a few of my favourite fandoms, regularly dipping my toes into other media phases, and spending time doing other hobbies irl means i can keep coming back to my favourite show every few weeks and feel that passion/comfort all over again. it's like coming home to a warm, home-cooked meal of human meat made by the worst person i know ☺️❤️
