This comic introduced me to Undertale. I discovered it when I was around 14yo a year after I made DeviantArt (I'm 20 now). You influenced my style a bit since one of the first fanarts that I made was for your AU (tho I never posted them).

At the time I was in a rly bad place too and this comic helped me in a way. I could finally relate to someone. I remember waiting for you to post a new chapter every day.

Rereading it still brings me some type of comfort, and I do it every few years. I know it ended few months ago. So I just wanted to thank you for all the good things/impacts that your art left on me. :)

Yall ignore whatever spelling mistakes I made, English isn't my first language and I mix up letters a lot (I don't feel like checking all this more than twice)

I suffered animating this, I've never taken so long making an animation before. I've been doing this for almost 2 weeks I think. (Animations usually take me less than a week)

Handplates Dust is such a neat concept for many reasons, one being that he now has a reason to be wearing those gloves- bc srsly no hate but what kind of freak is just wearing gloves 24/7??

but then also i rlly like the parallels between Dust and Handplates!Gaster. like Gaster made 1-s and 2-p in an attempt to create artificial human SOULS to break the barrier and free monsterkind. and like along the way he developed this mentality that he was the only one who could save them. It was his responsibility, only he could do this.

and this can be seen in how he ignores Alphys and Asgore, instead working on his experiment. and this mentality also gives Gaster a way to justify the experiments (which in some cases were basically torture, not to mention the emotional and physical abuse 1-s and 2-p went through)

And that part of Gasters character is actually pretty similar to Dusts.

Dust killed everyone in his AU as a way to stop the human- he needed to get stronger. but as the resets go on Dust starts to view himself as a savior. in his mind he is saving the monsters of his AU by killing them. he is sparing them from the human (even if either way they’d be dead)

and like both Dust and Handplates Gaster have this weird savior complex going on. in Gasters case other people could have actually helped him with the issue. BUT STILL, they both use this mentality of “im saving them, i need to do this, only i can do this, it has to be me” to justify their actions.

and the really messed up part is that 1-s and 2-p dont really remember Gaster. like they have flashbacks, but its more that they feel like something is familiar than actual memories. and so later in Handplates when Gaster returns and Sans and Papyrus get those memories back, the way that Sans reacts would actually be ironic in this situation.

because if Dust were a Handplates Sans (if he was 1-s) then if he could remember Gasters actions he would be disgusted and appalled. but he didn’t remember Gaster and actually ended up taking a similar path to him.

idk i just think that this is kinda neat. and yk smth about repeating the actions of your abusers and the cycle of trauma

💫 Just finished listening to (comic dubs)/reading Handplates by zarla-s and it was such an emotional ride. The entire story, dedication, characterization, tying of events, DIALOGUE, and depiction of mental health struggles were nothing short of a masterpiece. Seeing this comic lying around before and not tapping into it until now made me realize that I missed the chance to grow up with this series the way Sans and Papyrus grew up in it. Zarla, you are such a master artist and storyteller. Thank you for sharing your magic with the Undertale community. 💫

Sans' character hit too close to home, seeing life that way and being depressed due to it because of the present circumstances and especially because of the past can take a huge toll to your whole well-being, mental health, and the relationships around you. Getting up each day welcomed by dread is not a cakewalk, and the choice to just sleep and "be lazy" (which we know is not actually laziness) is so tempting even though you know you should take steps to be better and take on responsibilities out there. This feeling is very real and serious. I hope everyone out there has someone to talk to.

I also saw the struggle in Papyrus' side through his mania and also obvious signs of insecure parental attachment and abuse (for both of them). I relate to him as well in the need to have control over one's life due to self-imposed responsibilities and maybe imposter syndrome. But having experienced all that AND remaining compassionate is such a superpower, and I'm glad they survived all that and found their happy ending (which makes one yearn for theirs too).

I think the brothers' story was about finding meaning in life despite their past, conditions, and experiences, even with the dread of the "what-ifs" that this life might be all just a game. The determination and courage to rewrite one's own destiny.

I also love their sibling relationship (tho hyper-codependent but reasonably at that). Seeing them share an intimacy for each other's well-being and feelings tapped a soft spot in my heart and reminded me of my own relationships and search for meaning.

In this point of my life right now, I still struggle with the achievement of hope again and yet still have to embark to get there. I hope I do get my happy ending as well and be able to create different meaningful things in my life.

On Gaster's part, it just reminded me of second chances and the miracle of faith. Being given another opportunity to have a life despite all the ugliness and worst decisions you made in the past.

If I would be more hyper-analytical, I would've been quoting dialogues and referencing scenes rn and this'd be a long post or a multi-parter, but nah this is just my reaction to the whole thing.

Anyway, if you read all this, then hi. The artwork above is obv Zarla's and I jus shared it coz that's one of the scenes I loved among many others.

This Comic means a lot to me, it has been a great inspiration to draw and continue practicing all this year. I am very happy to have discover it, when I started reading Handplates I didn't know English, I couldn't find the Spanish translations and it didn't occur to me to search in YouTube for dubs haha, so with Google Translate I was translating everything that I didn't understand manually, at the time the comic finished my English reading comprehension became very good, was my door to learn the lenguage (although my grammar isn't very good hehe)

Of course, my favourite character is Fresh, but he’s not exactly a Sans so I couldn’t pick him ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (sorry Ink I still love you pookie <3)

Handplates is one of the most well written, most heart wrenching and tearjerker comic I’ve ever read in this community. Sans’s depression, faith in his brother and overall character is so great and well captured. I cried at the ending. God. If you haven’t read handplates I recommend you do. It’s a 10/10 read.
