Castiel: He insists in not needing anything (because whatever he needs he immediately buys it), but he might be very excited to get anything related with his guitar. The thing he’d be the most grateful about would be earplugs to protect his ears from the loud volumes of his concerts. He’ll be happy with cheaper things such as cozy blankets, new pajamas or even new slippers or shoes. 

Nathaniel: Whatever cat-related makes him as happy as a kid, even a gift for Snowy makes him feel excited. He doesn’t want you to spend much money on him and tiny things are enough. Even handmade things make his heart melt!

Lysander: He might like any gift that makes reference to some inner joke in between you. Handmade gifts are his favorite honestly, he loves ceramic mugs made by you!

Armin: Steam gift cards… any character figurine for his collection, any sweater related to a fandom he is in. He’s a freak, he is easier to gift.

Kentin: On the opposite to Nathaniel, something dog-related. A scarf or a coat might be good for his van trips to some colder places. Something more expensive he could get to enjoy is a smartbox to live a new experience with you, but he doesn’t want you to spend much money. Rayan: He adores being gifted books and even more if it’s a classic. He will never say no to reading Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe, Jane Austen, Stephen King or George Orwell. He is opened to other authors and other genres. He might also appreciate new formal clothes for his job or a handmade painting.

Hyun: Cute plushies are his thing, also cool jackets or coats. Warm and cozy socks to be home. Any vanilla scented candle for his bedroom might also work as a great gift. Skincare products are also a great option. He loves to get gifted stuff in boxes, everything together, so it is more exciting to see the amount of gifts he is going to open.

Priya: Candles! She doesn’t have a preference for any scent, as long as it can give a certain smell to her bedroom. She’d also be grateful to receive a new, medium lengthen notebook where she can write her thoughts.

Aaron: No matter if he loves his brown shirt too much, he lowkey needs a new one… so a brown sweater, shirt or jacket, it might be pretty useful. 

Beliath: Skincare products, a headband, haircare products because bro wants it to glow and be fancy. A bottle of red wine. Affection. Any sex-related stuff, even if it is in a joke, it might be a good gift as well.

Raphael: Books in braille! He knows how hard it is to find them, so it’s a great surprise for him to receive more. And even more if they are from your era, and he can get to know what kind of literature is made nowadays.

Vladimir: A bucket of candles and tea. Books, a bucket of flowers, a new cane that can be elegant or neutral. A letter made by hand, or even a poem.

365 Promises of God

Day 357 – You Will Be Fishers of Men

Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." (Mat 4:19 NKJV)

My dad was an expert fisherman. He never had his own TV show, but he had fished in a few competitions, and was often at the lake with the family, out in a johnboat either fly fishing or fishing with a jelly worm or a Strike King™ In fact, my dad was a good friend of Bill McEwen who started that company out of his garage, and was a beta tester for the single-spinner lure. He had a tackle box full of these lures, sitting alongside red and blue jelly worms, tiny fly lures, and fat minnow lures with silver scoop fronts and jangly tri-hook tails.

I used to take out the bright green, orange, yellow and blue lures and stare at them, fascinated by the craftsmanship but careful to keep myself away from the sharp hooks, which no doubt were still a little fishy from the last catch. But that’s pretty much where my fascination in fishing stopped. I never caught the bug, though my dad tried valiantly to get me interested. In fact, when I was around 12, he barred anyone from going into his workshop for a month, and for my birthday, he presented me with a handmade beautiful copper fishing rod, one he had painstakingly wound, shellacked, and fitted with a cork handle and copper Garcia reel. He took me out that weekend to help me try it out, and there I was in the johnboat with him in the hot sun, trying to learn how to make the ‘perfect cast’. The Goofy Movie had me in stitches because in some ways I felt like Max, Goofy’s son, unsure of how I felt about the whole fishing adventure. I was rather unappreciative of my dad’s herculean efforts to connect with his ADHD son.

After several attempts to understand the workings of the thumb button on the reel, and the winding of it, my dad took me into a cove and asked me to cast my Strike King™ lure near a sunken log, where I was sure to hook a good-sized largemouth bass. After all, the lake was full of them, the lure was perfect, the time of day was perfect, the shade was perfect, and the teacher was excellent. What could go wrong?

Well, with all that pressure and the hot sun, my whole body was bathed in sweat, including my hands. I was careful to keep my thumb on the button until the ‘perfect cast’ was thrown, and then released the button to let the line fly out of the reel, just like I’d been taught. And, sure enough, the lure landed exactly where it was supposed to. My dad, who was fly fishing at the time, watched with approval my form and execution.

But the sweaty-palms failed me, and the beautiful copper brand new month-long painstaking project my dad had worked so diligently on, went right out of my hand and into the lake. While I sat there in horror, watching the long loop of almost invisible fishing line sink toward the water, and the ripples spread out, all that was left of my beautiful birthday present, my dad let out a word I can’t repeat here, and his fly rod went zzzt zzzt! And his surface lure and line somehow went under the arch of my rapidly descending line.

Nobody could say that my dad was a bad fisherman. HOW he managed to snag my line with a lure, when his lure had already been cast, is a miracle and a testament to his skill. I’ve never seen a move loke that, either before, or since. With another zzzzt! my dad’s line was in his hand, along with my wayward line. He glanced over at me. “You didn’t push that button, did you!?”

Well, of course, both of us knew that I had. If I hadn’t, the lure would never have even left the rod. But he began pulling my line up, exploding periodically with additional words I’d never heard before. Even a few in a foreign language, I’m sure. “II sure hope I tied that line off in the reel,” he muttered as he drew in armlength after armlength of line into the boat, filling the space between us with a huge pile of wet twisted line.

I offered twice to dive into the lake to get that rod, but dad pointed at a sign not twenty feet away that said ‘No Swimming’. “You’d have to drown.” By the look on my dad’s face, I wasn’t positive he wouldn’t have held me under. When he finally pulled the mud-encrusted rod up, he tossed it into the bottom of the boat and turned his back on me to start the motor and steer us back to the dock. Without him seeing, I dipped the rod in the lake to wash the mud off, then carefully reeled in the 200+ feet of line gathered in the boat. We made it back to the dock, and dad drove us home, without another word. But he never took me fishing again.

As you can see, I missed the ‘fishing gene’ in the family tree. Both my brothers have done ok with it. And my sister got it in spades. But once God got hold of me, I’ve done alright as a fisher of men. I don’t miss the many hours out at the lake NOT fishing, but I’ve spent a lot of time and effort, and it’s been a joy, casting bait on the water for fish like you. Whether I’m feeding the fish or catching them, God takes care of the increase, and all I have to be willing to do is follow him, and he encourages me to do what I’m doing right now.

This promise wasn’t just to the four disciples in our reading today. It’s for all of us. If we follow Him, He WILL make us fishers of men. So follow closely after him, cast your bait on the water, and see who makes it into the boat. I promise you, it will bring you joy when you do.

Many native plants, especially those with waxy cuticles, contain saponins which are steroids that dissolve in water and create a stable froth. Saponins are named from the soapwort plant (Saponaria) whose roots were used historically as soap.

The earliest evidence of soap use dates back to 2800 BC in ancient Babylonian clay. Egyptians (1500 BC) bathed regularly with soaplike substances made from plant saponins combined with animal and vegetable oils. Handmade soaps are often made using fats such as olive oils with lye. Animal fat mostly in the form of tallow is still a major component of many soaps, but plant oils have become more important in soap production. Two palms, the coconut palm and the African palm, provide the bulk of the plant oils currently used.

Soaps made from plant oils often dissolve very quickly and produce excessive lather, so tallow has been used to create hardness in some mass-produced soaps. Palm oil has been found to be very similar chemically to tallow and can be used to replace the animal fat. Plant oils such as cedar wood, rosewood, and rose are often added to soaps to impart their scents.

The fruits of several native North American plants contain sufficient levels of saponin to produce lather and can be used as soaps or shampoos. This group of plants includes:

Atriplex roots,

This herbaceous perennial which can grow to a height of 1.5 m (5 feet) was once widely used in Europe for washing. The great scouring qualities of the leaves and the juices that are produced as a result have been described in many early herbals. The leaves and roots when rubbed or boiled in water produce a green soapy solution that is used for cleaning very old and delicate fabrics. Soapwort is used today in some gentle skin cleaning products.

Buffaloberry (Shepherdia rotundifolia)

The buffaloberry plant was widely used for its medicinal properties. The high levels of saponins made it an ideal source for natural cleansing soaps and shampoo. Silver buffaloberry fruits were boiled into a tea that was consumed by hunters to cleanse their souls and provide them with good luck in the hunt. The high levels of saponins in the fruits can cause intestinal distress and were not consumed in large quantities.

Soapweed Yucca (Yucca glauca)

As the name implies, the crushed roots of soapweed yucca produce a lather that makes a good soap or shampoo. The lathering substances called saponins are found in many plants, but are exceptionally concentrated in yucca roots. In addition, the dried leaves of soapweed yucca can be woven into baskets, mats, or sandals. The strong coarse leaf fibers can be extracted to make cordage.

Soap Plant (Chlorogalum pomeridianum)

Chlorogalum pomeridianum, called “wavyleaf soap plant,” “soap root,” or “amole,” is a low-growing plant of California and Oregon. It is used as soap by the local peoples. The bulb of the plant is easily recognized: a brown, fibrous bulb a little larger than a person’s fist, with a white, pliable heart. When crushed, this heart yields soap.

Amole is a generic Spanish term for a plant-derived soap; other plants of the Southwest have this name. Sources say that it makes excellent laundry soap for delicate fabrics, good shampoo, dish detergent, and bath soap.

Been the capital during British rule, you can view the relics of the old building and a museum called Smritika that houses British-related photographs and the other antiques.

Viper Island

This island was the spot to lock the prisoners at British time. The first jail was built on this island that was not used after Cellular Jail. The gibbet on the top of a hill has witnessed the deaths of prisoners, as it was at this place that they were hanged. One of those was Sher Ali, who killed the Viceroy of India in 1872.

Chatham Island

This island hosts the biggest and most ancient Saw Mill of Asia and the Haddo Harbor.
