Black Yarn

The saying goes: “If someone makes you something out of yarn, they like you. If they make it out of black yarn, they love you.” My first knitting project of 2024 is a ribbed hat. For me. In black yarn. 😍

Day 1, 2, 3 and done! My new year’s knitting streak is alive! (Well, 3 days in a row isn’t all that much to brag about, but it is another completed hat for 2023’s Hats for Sailors project; hat number 2 to be specific). I’m making a point to document each completed piece this year, modeling it before it goes off for a good soak, then wet blocking.

The yarns, if you care about that stuff, is most Berroco Ultrawool (cream, black, dark blue, medium blue, crimson, and gray) and a splash of Malabrigo Rios in Sunset, all superwash merino wools. The pattern is from Tincan Knits, their Sunshine hat.

Today's photo in Bing is from a very special Japanese Temple! 🇯🇵⛩ ☆ I always get fascinated by how old the art of knitting is and how it has been cherished for generations and different cultures alike! I am humble and very grateful to be part of this ancient craft's community and for keep spreading the love of knitting and crocheting with all of you!! ☆ " The stone figures lining the steps in today's photo are among 500 rakan statues on the small island of Miyajima in Japan. The colorful knitted caps they're wearing are offerings from people visiting the island, a tradition followed in other areas of Japan as well. Some believe this gift-giving is based on a children's folk story of an elderly hatmaker who was unable to make it to market on a snowy day, so he placed his collection of hats on rakan statues to keep their bare heads dry. Later, the statues showed their appreciation by delivering gifts to the hatmaker and his wife so they could celebrate the new year properly. The statues in this photo were individually carved sometime between the 1780s to the 1820s, and no two are alike. They line the path at the base of Mount Misen that leads to the Daisho-in Temple, one of the many temples and shrines on the island."
