You know ever since Vol 7 got uploaded I was thinking about Hanae as a character. I find his lack of self confidence to be...well, really telling. Yet, when it comes to other people (Mei) he'll step up and defend them.

Putting manga spoilers just in case

This is a good example. When he got cornered, he didn't say a word. He was just gonna let it happen.

However when he was on a "date" with Mei...

Despite being visibly shaken and terrified, he stands up for her. (Not aware they weren't allowed to actually do anything to her). He wanted to protect her and keep her safe.

And he does this as Hana too with Shuumei.

and she tells Mei This...

This isn't simply a desire to protect, like Shuumei and others. Hanae doesn't protect people just because, nor can he hold his own.

He cares about other people- about Mei/Shuumei, moreso than himself, shown as he's willing to let himself get hurt so that (s)he's safe.

It's moreso a lack of self preservation rather than boldly defending/protecting someone.

Hello fellow crossplay love fans. I just realized something important. The reason that Shuumei has learned that Hanae and Hana are related is becuase this will force him to be nice to Hanae. Becuase if he acts hostile then that could get back to Hana and worsen his chances. This means that he has to act nice towards Hanae and also will probably work through his Tsundere feelings for Hanae in the process. One funny scenario could be him grilling Hanae on Hana’s likes and dislikes.
