Roleplaying Races 16: Yaddithian
(Art taken from Pathfinder Bestiary 6, art by Florian Stitz)
And here we are, the very last ancestry we’ll be covering for First Edition (Though don’t worry, I have something in mind for Thursday and Friday), and it’s a bit of a deep pull from the Elder Mythos.
Originally appearing in the story Through the Gates of the Silver Key, the Yaddithians were the natives of the world of Yaddith, powerful mages and masters of technology who, despite their mastery of travel through time and space, could not save their world from being consumed and ravaged by Dholes (or perhaps Bholes). They primarily come into the story due to recurring Lovecraftian protagonist Randolph Carter getting stuck inside of the body of one after wishing to see and learn from their civilization before it’s collapse. It… doesn’t go well for him.
Pathfinder’s take on the yaddithians pretty much follows their book counterpart, save that a handful of them escaped the destruction of their homeworld, fleeing across space and time. Now, the bestiary entry does state that most yaddithians are mid to high level due to their immortality and rarity, but there’s nothing to stop someone from playing a young yaddithian, perhaps trying to piece together the secrets of their people from their cosmic diaspora.
Yaddithians are lanky creatures whose limbs bend in ways that would seem to make more sense for insects than mammals, but their skin is thick and wrinkly rather than chitinous. Meanwhile, their most prominent facial feature is their tapir-like trunk nose, capable of similar levels of flexibility.
We don’t know very much about yaddithian society given their world is dead and their people scattered, but we do know that they mastered powerful magic and technology. As such, one can assume that they are open and scientifically-minded. And while the wizard Zkauba was disgusted with Randolph Carter sharing a body with him, it’s unclear if it was disgust with what Randolph was, or with the unbidden intrusion.
However, honestly unless the story you want to tell focuses on Yaddith before it’s destruction, stories involving yaddithians are less about their society and more about the lack of society, of being one of the last of their kind struggling with the isolation and the distance they feel with other civilizations across the cosmos.
Yaddithians are tough and smart, but their alien mindsets make empathy with other species difficult.
They are somewhat sluggish for their size, but possess excellent night-eyes and the ability to survive in a vacuum.
Though they prefer magic and science, they do sport powerful claws which can be used in a pinch.
Their thick, wrinkly skin is also quite tough and hard to penetrate.
A yaddithian’s mind is shockingly good at retaining information, especially magical information, meaning that not only can they more easily recall knowledge, but they have no need for spellbooks or familiars, able to reference and prepare their magic directly from memory, though the process of memorizing such magic still requires expensive herbs to help them concentrate on committing them to memory.
Nearly immortal, yaddithians have lifespans measured in millenia, never seeming to age after maturity and being completely immune to magical aging by virtue of there simply being no difference that such paltry magics can latch onto.
With their intelligence bonus and ability to never worry about losing a spellbook or familiar, yaddithians are just begging to be paired up with the witch or wizard class. However, that’s not all they’re good for. Though it doesn’t say so specifically, I’d argue that this applies to formulae books as well, making alchemist and investigator very viable options, especially with the bonus to knowledge checks as well. Their con bonus also makes them surprisingly durable, making kineticist and melee classes quite viable, especially magus. The wisdom penalty does mean that non-oracle or paladin divine classes have some hampering, but it’s nothing these brilliant and ancient beings can’t get around.

part 8 / previous installments/tags
Anaheim keeps him Mason up after camp. It’s different than playing in Europe. Everything’s faster, and more guys are alphas. It’s a process, learning to take advantage of scent while keeping all his other skills sharp. He blows his assignment a couple of times, completely losing track of some beta who doesn’t smell like anything.
For Mason’s first few games, Trevor’s the only omega on the ice. He laughs it all off, all of the chirps and the cross-checks, everyone who shoves him around. Des does his job as enforcer, but their other alphas – Getzy, Hamp, Commer, Fowler, Manson, Grant – leave things to Jamie. His omega, his problem.
Jamie doesn’t get into it with opposing players too much. Once he takes a slashing penalty and explains to Mason later that the other guy was smelling some kind of way about Trevor.
Mason gets used to an NHL locker room, but the level of filth that comes out in the chirping when they play Buffalo and Montreal still manages to surprise him. He’s not sure why guys don’t chirp Trevor that way, telling him all the things they’d make him do, all the ways he’d take their knot. It’s not because anybody respects Trevor. Mason loves him, but Trevor’s objectively way more annoying than Caufield and Skinner.
He asks Getz about it, and his answer is typically curt. “Unbonded,” Getzy says. “It’s not personal.”
sorry you got sent down, Connor texts him after Mason reaches his ninth game and coach calls him in for the conversation. Wj?
lfg, Mason types. He wonders if they’ll let him room with Connor again at world juniors. It’s surprising to remember how salty he was about getting paired with Connor last time. Now they text like every day. Connor’s got questions, and Mason sends him pictures of all the stuff that makes him think holy shit, I’m really in the NHL. Like the steak salads, or all the different kinds of shampoo in the shower. It doesn’t feel like bragging the way it would if Mason was talking to one of his other friends, not when it’s so obvious that Connor’s going to make it.
He doesn’t tell Connor about presenting. It’s just a weird thing to say over text. And it’s not like he’s telling anyone else, anyway.
Back in the OHL, it feels like he’s missing a finger. He’s figured out how to use his nose, and now it might as well be cut off. There’s nothing to smell. His coaches are all betas. On the ice, none of his teammates has presented. Off the ice, he’s still in a mask (thanks, Canada). In the handful of games he plays with Peterborough, he doesn’t encounter any overagers on the other team. Just a couple of alpha coaches as he flies past the opposing bench. By the time selection camp starts, he’s used to being under the radar.
It doesn’t work that way with Team Canada.
An assistant coach takes Mason aside in the lobby of their hotel in Calgary. Under a chandelier bristling with antlers, the coach’s nostrils flare as he inspects Mason. “We had you with Bedard again.” He runs his thumb down the stack of keycards in his hand, making the paper sleeves buzz. “We’ll have to switch you up.”
“Why?” Mason tries to make it sound like a question and not an objection.
“Now that you’ve presented.” The coach draws himself upward, trying to compensate for Mason’s height advantage. “Best to have you with another alpha.”
“You don’t have to do that.” It’s not like he’s going to fight Connor. Even if he did, Connor could give as good as he gets, just like he always has with Mason.
The coach sizes him up. His worn leather scent is faintly perceptible through Mason’s mask. “You’re not gonna cause any problems for us?”
“No, of course not.” Connor’s probably going to be an alpha anyway, if that’s what the coaches care about. What problems could he possibly cause by rooming with him now?
“Make sure of it.” The coach hands him a key.
Connor gets off the elevator as Mason is about to get on. “Hey.” He gives Mason the closest thing he has to a smile, which means that the curl of his lip gets a little more pronounced for a moment. Then he gives Mason a hug.
The familiar scent rushes straight to Mason’s head. He might as well not be wearing a mask. How fucking dumb is he? It wasn’t their hotel room. It’s Connor who smells like fresh ice, cedar planks, cold steel. Mason breathes in and the word appears in his head unbidden: omega.
Which doesn’t make any sense. This isn’t what omegas smell like. Omegas smell like watermelon or violets or grape jelly, sweet and boring.
And he hasn’t heard anything about Connor being an omega. It would be big news, if Canada’s next phenom was an omega. Something would have come across Mason’s twitter. Maybe Mason’s wrong. Connor’s so young. He shouldn’t smell like anything yet. Maybe something’s messed up. Something’s wrong with Mason’s nose, like an allergic reaction to hotels or something. Or maybe something’s wrong with Connor. Mason resolves not to fuck anything up. He’s not even going to think about it.
“You okay?” Connor pats Mason’s chest, trying to step back from the hug.
“Yeah, just.” Mason drops his arms, dazed. “Long flight.”
“Want to ditch your stuff?” Connor hits the elevator button as he’s asking.
“Sure.” Mason inhales so hard the edges of his mask crumple against his face. The elevator is full of Connor’s icy scent. Their room’s going to smell like heaven. Their room’s going to put Mason through hell.

Proactive Steps: Foreclosure Solutions to Consider Right Now
Facing foreclosure can be a daunting experience, but taking proactive steps can help you navigate through this challenging time more effectively. Whether you're in the early stages of the foreclosure timeline in New Jersey or nearing the end, understanding your options and acting quickly can make a significant difference. Here are some essential solutions to consider right now. 1. Understand Your Foreclosure Timeline
The first step in dealing with foreclosure is to fully understand your situation. In New Jersey, the foreclosure timeline can be lengthy, often taking several months to years. Familiarize yourself with the stages, from the initial missed payment to the final auction. Knowing where you stand can help you plan your next steps more effectively.
2. Seek Professional Help
Engaging with a foreclosure specialist can provide you with valuable guidance tailored to your specific circumstances. These experts are well-versed in foreclosure laws and can offer personalized advice on how to proceed. They can also help you explore various alternatives, such as loan modification, forbearance, or refinancing.
3. Communicate with Your Lender
One of the most effective proactive steps is to communicate openly with your lender. Many lenders offer foreclosure services designed to help homeowners avoid losing their homes. Discuss your financial situation and ask about available programs or solutions. Lenders may offer options like repayment plans or temporary forbearance to help you get back on track.
4. Consider a Short Sale
If keeping your home isn't feasible, a short sale might be a viable option. In a short sale, you sell your home for less than the remaining mortgage balance, with the lender's approval. This can be a less damaging alternative to foreclosure, allowing you to move on without the significant credit hit that comes with a foreclosure.
5. Explore Government Assistance Programs
There are various government programs designed to help homeowners avoid foreclosure. Programs like the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) or the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) can provide the financial relief you need. Research these options and see if you qualify for any assistance.
6. Legal Considerations
Sometimes, legal intervention can provide a temporary reprieve or even a long-term solution. Consulting with an attorney who specializes in foreclosure can help you understand your rights and any legal avenues you might pursue. This can be especially important if there are any discrepancies or issues with how your foreclosure is being handled.
7. Budgeting and Financial Management
Improving your financial situation is key to managing and overcoming foreclosure. Create a realistic budget that prioritizes mortgage payments and reduces unnecessary expenses. Seeking advice from a financial counselor offering foreclosure services can also provide strategies to better manage your finances and avoid future issues.
Conclusion
Facing foreclosure is undoubtedly stressful, but taking proactive steps can help you regain control of your situation. By understanding the foreclosure timeline in New Jersey, seeking professional help from a foreclosure specialist, and exploring all available options, you can find a path forward. Remember, the sooner you act, the more choices you'll have. Stay informed, communicate with your lender, and don't hesitate to seek the assistance you need to navigate through this challenging time.

Making Home Affordable
What Is Making Home Affordable
"Making Home Affordable" (MHA) was a program introduced by the U.S. government in 2009, during the financial crisis, with the aim of assisting homeowners who were struggling to make their mortgage payments. The program was a response to the widespread housing market downturn and the subsequent economic recession.
MHA encompassed several initiatives designed to provide relief to homeowners facing various financial challenges. Some of the key components of the Making Home Affordable program included:
Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP): This initiative aimed to modify the terms of existing mortgages to make them more affordable for homeowners facing financial difficulties. It typically involved reducing interest rates, extending loan terms, or adjusting the principal balance.
Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP): HARP was designed for homeowners with little or no equity in their homes. It allowed them to refinance their mortgages at lower interest rates, even if the value of their homes had declined.
Home Affordable Unemployment Program (UP): UP provided temporary relief for homeowners who lost their jobs by reducing or suspending their mortgage payments.
Principal Reduction Alternative (PRA): PRA was intended to help homeowners with severely underwater mortgages (where the loan amount exceeded the value of the home) by reducing the principal balance of their loans.
Second Lien Modification Program (2MP): This program worked alongside HAMP to modify second mortgages, making them more affordable for homeowners.
Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives (HAFA): HAFA provided options for homeowners who were unable to keep their homes, including short sales and deeds-in-lieu of foreclosure.
It's important to note that each of these programs had specific eligibility criteria and requirements, and not all homeowners were eligible for every program.
The Making Home Affordable program officially concluded in December 2016, but its impact on housing policy and foreclosure prevention strategies continues to be influential in discussions about housing stability.
If you are facing difficulties with your mortgage or housing situation, it's advisable to consult with a financial advisor, housing counselor, or reach out to relevant government agencies or non-profit organizations that may be able to offer guidance and assistance.
Breaking Down Making Home Affordable
"Making Home Affordable" (MHA) was a comprehensive program initiated by the U.S. government in 2009 to address the housing crisis and economic downturn. It aimed to assist struggling homeowners in various ways. Here are the key components of the program:
Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP): This initiative sought to modify existing mortgages to make them more affordable for homeowners experiencing financial hardships. Modifications could involve reducing interest rates, extending the loan term, or adjusting the principal balance.
Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP): HARP was designed for homeowners with limited or no equity in their homes. It allowed them to refinance their mortgages at lower interest rates, even if the value of their homes had declined.
Home Affordable Unemployment Program (UP): UP provided temporary relief for homeowners who lost their jobs. It did so by reducing or suspending their mortgage payments for a defined period.
Principal Reduction Alternative (PRA): PRA aimed to help homeowners with severely underwater mortgages. This means the loan amount exceeded the value of the home. It did this by reducing the principal balance of their loans.
Second Lien Modification Program (2MP): This program worked alongside HAMP. It sought to modify second mortgages to make them more affordable for homeowners.
Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives (HAFA): HAFA provided options for homeowners who were unable to keep their homes. These options included short sales (selling the property for less than the amount owed) and deeds-in-lieu of foreclosure (transferring ownership to the lender in exchange for debt forgiveness).
These programs were designed to help homeowners facing different types of financial challenges. Each had specific eligibility criteria and requirements, and not all homeowners were eligible for every program.
MHA officially concluded in December 2016, but its legacy has continued to influence discussions and policies related to housing stability and foreclosure prevention.
If you're experiencing difficulties with your mortgage or housing situation, it's advisable to consult with a financial advisor, housing counselor, or contact relevant government agencies or non-profit organizations that may offer guidance and assistance.
Ongoing Services of Making Home Affordable
As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, the Making Home Affordable (MHA) program officially concluded in December 2016. Therefore, there are no ongoing services provided directly by the MHA program itself.
However, many of the initiatives under MHA, such as loan modifications and refinancing options, may still be available through various private and public sector programs offered by banks, mortgage lenders, and government agencies.
Here are some avenues that homeowners facing financial difficulties or seeking assistance with their mortgages can explore:
Loan Modification Programs: Many mortgage lenders offer their own modification programs to help homeowners who are struggling to make their monthly payments. These programs may involve adjusting the interest rate, extending the loan term, or making other changes to the loan terms.
Refinancing Programs: Homeowners who are looking to lower their monthly mortgage payments or take advantage of lower interest rates may consider refinancing their mortgage. This can be done through traditional lenders or government-backed programs like the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) or the Veterans Administration (VA).
Housing Counseling Services: HUD-approved housing counseling agencies can provide advice and assistance to homeowners regarding mortgage options, foreclosure prevention, and budgeting.
State and Local Assistance Programs: Many states and local governments offer their own programs to help homeowners facing financial challenges. These programs may include grants, low-interest loans, or other forms of financial assistance.
Nonprofit Organizations: Various nonprofit organizations, like community development corporations and housing advocacy groups, may offer resources and assistance for homeowners in need.
Government Agencies: Agencies like the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) provide resources and information about foreclosure prevention and housing assistance.
It's important to note that the availability of these programs and services may vary depending on your location and individual circumstances. Therefore, if you're experiencing difficulties with your mortgage or housing situation, it's advisable to consult with a financial advisor, housing counselor, or contact relevant government agencies or non-profit organizations for guidance and assistance.

Someday, when I am well and fully fucking blazed and sitting at my keys instead of on my phone, I will unload all of the absolute fuckshit assholery that I witnessed during the HARP/HAMP refinance boom as a refinance & purchase mortgage processor in the greater Philly area.
I fucking hate landlords, and Philly landlords are the absolute worst of the worst. When @urbanprole and I got new refinances in Philly, if we found out it was NOO (non-owner-occupied), we would take bets before we opened the file as to whether it had liens on the property for unpaid water bills, unpaid property tax, or both!
(Would you like to guess how often it was both?)
Philly actually has historically HIGH owner occupancy rates for a city, but that's been changing quickly over the past decade. Right now, it's like 53% owner-occupied when like NYC is 32.5%. There has been a real push to "clean up" Philly, which means shitty gentrification.
Fuck landlords.
i'm sorry.. what?
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Municipal Court is resuming evictions as early as Monday, saying landlord tenant officers have now received training on use of force and de-escalation tactics.
landlord.. tenant.. officers?
"Though the sheriff has the power to serve evictions, the task is usually handled by a private force hired by a court-appointed attorney known as the landlord-tenant officer. These private security contractors — who are often armed — have long been a part of the local eviction system."
so landlords have their own private military? this is class warfare
This follows the court suspending all evictions in July after multiple tenants were shot during evictions over the past several months. In one incident in March, a plainclothes landlord tenant officer shot a woman in the head. In another incident in July, police said a woman was shot in the leg. A spokesperson for the court's Landlord and Tenant Office said evictions will now be conducted in teams of two officers who have all received Pennsylvania Constable training.
this is LITERALLY class warfare
The LTO is funded by service fees from landlords and not taxpayer money. Fees to landlords will increase from $145 to $350 to cover the additional staff, training and insurance costs.
and who the fuck do you think is going to end up ultimately paying those fees in the end? where do you think the landlords are going to get the money? you're just giving them an excuse to raise the rent. oh my god this country is a complete and total failed state.

Besides his regular night gigs. Wes worked a variety of day jobs often losing them for taking short spells out to go on the road. The first brief experiences of life on the road came from short stints with the Brownskin Models and Snookum Russell
"Well, I got pretty good and went on the road with a gp We starvest At that time I dan realise that you'd work one jog in Kansas City, the next in Florida, and the next would be in founville You know, a thousand miles a sight. That was really ungh, man
At that time the Montgomery's resided at 1217 Cornell (now a major highway) and a growing family meant that Wes had to earn regular money. The first day job that he held down for any length of
time was with Pope's Milk Company, Serene recalls "Early on Wes worked at Pope's, the milk plant, he didn't bring home mach money but we sure drank a lot of milk
Wes supplemented his daytime income from Pope's with his carnings from playing gigs in Indianapolis The Keys Supper Club, The 19th Hole, Club 440, The Ritz, The Cactus Club and the 500 Club were some of the places where Wes played regularly at that time
His first real break came in 1948 when bandleader Lionel Hampton came through and hired him. The local Indianapolis musicians had heard that Hamp was about to pass through the mid-west and was hiring fresh musicians along the way. Serene remembers We being apprehensive about auditioning but he decided to go anyway figuring that he had nothing to lose. Hamp, was impressed with the young guitarist's ability to play Charlie Christian type lines and hired him on the spot, despite the fact that he could neither read musical notation, nor chord symbols
Wes auditioned for Hamp, on or around 15 May 1948 and to everyone's surprise left Indianapolis that same day Serene remembered:
"I came home and passed Wes as he was leaving the house carrying a suitcase. Where are you going? I asked Wes replied "Oh I'm going on tour. I've just joined Lionel Hampton's Band
Wes stayed with Hamp, for two years but found life on the road away from his family for considerable lengths of time unpalatable and quit the band in 1950. Serene remembers:

Cam Heyward Tells Story Of Mr. Rooney First Handing Super Bowl XL Trophy To Casey Hampton: ‘Hamp Was In Tears’
Casey Hampton might be one of the most underrated Pittsburgh Steelers of all-time. That entire defensive line, him, Aaron Smith, Brett Keisel, and Chris Hoke, quietly did their job. All grunts, no glory, allowing the EDGE rushers to attack the quarterback, and inside linebackers to attack the runners. Hampton was the key cog in the middle, commanding double-teams every snap, and his play in Super…

On November 23, 1887, a mass shooting of African-American farm workers in Louisiana left some 60 dead. Bodies were dumped in unmarked graves while the white press cheered a victory against a fledgling black union. It was one of the bloodiest days in United States labor history, and while statues went up and public places were named for some of those involved, there is no marker of the Thibodaux Massacre.
Days after, a local planter widow Mary Pugh wrote, “I think this will settle the question of who is to rule the nigger or the white man for the next fifty years.” It was a far-sighted comment— black farm workers in the South wouldn’t have the opportunity to unionize for generations.
Years after the Thirteenth Amendment brought freedom, cane cutters’ working lives were already “barely distinguishable” from slavery, argues journalist and author John DeSantis. (His book, The Thibodaux Massacre: Racial Violence and the 1887 Sugar Cane Labor Strike, is an excellent and compelling account of the massacre.) With no land to own or rent, workers and their families lived in old slave cabins. They toiled in gangs, just like their ancestors had for nearly a century. Growers gave workers meals but paid famine wages of as little as 42 cents a day (91 cents per hour in today’s money, for a 12-hour shift).
Instead of cash, workers got scrip that bought basics at high prices at plantation stores.
But they had advantages that their counterparts in cotton areas lacked. Planters needed their labor, and growers living on thin margins failed to attract migrant laborers to replace local workers, especially in the crucial rolling season when the sugarcane needed to be cut and pressed in short order.
In the sugar parishes arcing through the southern part of the state from Berwick Bay to the Mississippi River, African-American men voted. The Republican Party, which supported black civil rights, was stronger in sugar country than anywhere else in the state. By the late 1860s, African-Americans became legislators or sheriffs, and black volunteer militias drilled, despite living and working conditions still bearing the marks of slavery.
In 1874, nine years after slavery ended in the United States, cane cutters demanded a second emancipation. They wanted a living wage, or at least the chance to rent on shares. Planters wanted to cut wages after the lean harvest of 1873-74 coincided with an economic recession, and while Louisiana growers produced 95 percent of the nation’s domestic sugar and molasses, they were losing market share to cheaper foreign sugars.
Sensing they were in a strong bargaining position, workers banded together in several sugar parishes, including St. Mary, Iberia, Terrebonne, and Lafourche, demanding cash wages of $1.25 per day, or $1.00 if meals were included.
But the growers refused, upset that African-American workers were demanding an end to their paternalistic work regime. So African-American leaders like Hamp Keys, a former Terrebonne Parish legislator, called a strike.
Keys led a march from Houma to Southdown Plantation in Terrebonne, rallying workers with a fiery speech. The sight of black protesters riled growers, and acting with their interests in mind, the parish’s African-American sheriff formed a posse of whites to face down strikers. Surprised at the opposition, Keys’s marchers retreated.
In the state capital of New Orleans (relocated to Baton Rouge in 1882), Republican Governor William Pitt Kellogg also backed growers. But he was under siege from the Louisiana White League, a paramilitary white supremacist group formed in 1874 to intimidate Republicans and keep African-Americans from voting. Despite Kellogg’s being a pro-growth moderate who favored low taxes, White Leaguers tried to oust him in a violent coup. The Battle of Liberty Place, as it was called, pitted white militiamen against federal troops and metropolitan police. Governor Kellogg was temporarily forced out of New Orleans. He returned under guard but would be Louisiana’s last Republican governor for more than 100 years.
America was retreating from Republican-led Reconstruction and abandoning civil rights. African-Americans in sugar regions kept the right to vote, but their influence in state elections was waning. As W. E. B. Du Bois put it in Black Reconstruction in America, “The slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again into slavery.”
Sugar workers attempted another strike in 1880, and both growers and workers resorted to sporadic violence. But time was on the growers’ side. African-Americans were being disarmed and thrown out of office, and some were leased out to hard labor for petty and trumped-up crimes. With few options available by 1887, Terrebonne sugar workers reached out to the Knights of Labor.
The Knights was the biggest and most powerful union in America. It began organizing African-American workers in 1883 in separate locals (a local is a bargaining unit of a broader union). Despite segregation, the Knights organized women and farm workers. And it made strides against Jim Crow. At the Knights’ 1886 national convention in Richmond, Virginia, leaders risked violence by insisting that a black delegate introduce Virginia’s segregationist governor.
Across the states of the former Confederacy, whites viewed organized labor as agitation that threatened the emerging Jim Crow order. Even in the North and Midwest, the Knights fought an uphill battle against authorities who sided with railroad and mine owners. Several states called out militias to break strikes during the late nineteenth century, but the Knights was at its peak of popularity in the 1880s.
In Louisiana, the Knights organized sugar workers into seven locals of 100 to 150 members each. Hamp Keys joined former black leaders like ex-sheriff William Kennedy. In August of 1887, the Knights met with the St. Mary branch of the Louisiana Sugar Planters Association asking for improved wages. And again the growers refused.
So the Knights raised the stakes in October of 1887 as the rolling season approached. Junius Bailey, a 29-year-old schoolteacher, served as local president in Terrebonne. His office sent a communique all over the region asking for $1.25 a day cash wages, and local workers’ committees followed up, going directly to growers with the same demand.
But instead of bargaining, growers fired union members. Planters like future Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward Douglass White kicked workers off the land, ordering any who stayed arrested. Siding with growers, Democratic newspapers circulated false reports of black-on-white violence. “The most vicious and unruly set of negroes,” were at the Rienzi Plantation near Thibodaux, the New Orleans Daily Picayune reported. “The leader of them said to-day that no power on earth could remove them unless they were moved as corpses.”
As the cane ripened, growers called on the governor to use muscle against the strikers. And Samuel D. McEnery, Democratic governor and former planter, obliged, calling for the assistance of several all-white Louisiana militias under the command of ex-Confederate General P. G. T. Beauregard. One group toted a .45 caliber Gatling gun--a hand-cranked machine gun--around two parishes before parking it in front of the Thibodaux courthouse. An army cannon was set up in front of the jail.
Then the killings started. In St. Mary, the Attakapas Rangers joined a sheriff’s posse facing down a group of black strikers. When one of the workers reached into a pocket, posse members opened fire on the crowd, “and four men were shot dead where they stood,” a newspaper reported. Terror broke the strike in St. Mary Parish.
In neighboring Terrebonne, some small growers came to the bargaining table, but larger planters hired strike-breakers from Vicksburg, Mississippi, 200 miles to the north, promising high wages and bringing them down on trains. The replacement workers were also African Americans, but they lacked experience in the canebrakes. As they arrived, militiamen evicted strikers.
And Thibodaux, in Lafourche Parish, was becoming a refuge for displaced workers. Some moved into vacant houses in town, while others camped along bayous and roadsides. Reports circulated of African-American women gossiping about a planned riot. Violence broke out in nearby Lockport on Bayou Lafourche when Moses Pugh, a black worker, shot and wounded Richard Foret, a planter, in self-defense. A militia unit arrived and mounted a bayonet charge on gathered workers, firing a volley in the air.
But the strike was gaining national attention. “Do the workingmen of the country understand the significance of this movement?” asked Washington D.C.’s National Republican, pointing out that sugar workers were “forced to work at starvation wages, in the richest spot under the American flag.” If forced back to the fields at gun point, no wage worker was safe from employer intimidation.
In Thibodaux, Lafourche Parish District Judge Taylor Beattie declared martial law. Despite being a Republican, Beattie was an ex-Confederate and White League member. He authorized local white vigilantes to barricade the town, identifying strikers and demanding passes from any African-American coming or going. And before dawn on Wednesday, the 23rd of November, pistol shots coming from a cornfield injured two white guards.
The response was a massacre. “There were several companies of white men and they went around night and day shooting colored men who took part in the strike,” said Reverend T. Jefferson Rhodes of the Moses Baptist Church in Thibodaux. Going from house to house, gunmen ordered Jack Conrad (a Union Civil War Veteran), his son Grant, and his brother-in-law Marcelin out of their house. Marcelin protested he was not a striker but was shot and killed anyway. As recounted in John DeSantis' book, Clarisse Conrad watched as her brother Grant “got behind a barrel and the white men got behind the house and shot him dead.” Jack Conrad was shot several times in the arms and chest. He lived and later identified one of the attackers as his employer.
One strike leader found in an attic was taken to the town common, told to run, and shot to pieces by a firing squad. An eyewitness told a newspaper that “no less than thirty-five negroes were killed outright,” including old and young, men and women. “The negroes offered no resistance; they could not, as the killing was unexpected.” Survivors took to the woods and swamps. Killings continued on plantations, and bodies were dumped in a site that became a landfill.
Workers returned to the fields on growers’ terms while whites cheered a Jim Crow victory. The Daily Picayune blamed black unionizers for the violence, saying that they provoked white citizens, suggesting the strikers “would burn the town and end the lives of the white women and children with their cane knives.” Flipping the narrative, the paper argued, “It was no longer a question of against labor, but one of law-abiding citizens against assassins.”
The union died with the strikers, and the assassins went unpunished. There was no federal inquiry, and even the coroner’s inquest refused to point a finger at the murderers. Sugar planter Andrew Price was among the attackers that morning. He won a seat in Congress the next year.
The massacre helped keep unions out of the South at just the moment it was industrializing. Textile manufacturers were moving out of New England, chasing low wages. And after textile factories closed in the 20th century, auto, manufacturing, and energy companies opened in southern states in part for the non-union workforce.
Southern black farm workers would not attempt to unionize again, until the 1930s when the Southern Tenant Farmers Union attracted both white and African American members. But it too was met by a violent racist backlash. The struggle for southern unions continued into the Civil Rights era. On the night before he was assassinated in Memphis, Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech supporting striking sanitation workers. He urged his audience “to give ourselves to this struggle until the end. ...You may not be on strike. But either we go up together, or we go down together.”
Editor's Note, December 4, 2017: This story has been updated to further highlight the exceptional research conducted by author John DeSantis in his book. It has also been edited to remove the reference to Jack Conrad being a labor organizer. Due to an editing error, the photo caption incorrectly listed Laurel Valley as a place of refuge for African-American planters. [h/t]

The second scenarios is about Grey as a dad!
I wrote it after @hampsdesu came up with Zoe, Grey and her MC's, Near, kid! Look at these amazing drawings hamps made! Beautiful as everything she draws.
Grey has come to the conclusion that parenting was harder than
hunting down monsters.
And this morning it was his turn to parent, while MC was out hunting.
It was a Monday morning, and he had to get Zoe ready for school, and so he found
himself slowly opening her bedroom door, finding her still sleeping soundly in her
bed, with Miss Hyde and Jekyll curled at her feet. Grey quietly entered, treading
with care- he has had enough stepping on Lego, and did not care to wake up his
daughter with a shriek-and made his way to the curtains, drawing them aside to
let in the bright light. Zoe stirred, but did not wake.
Grey bend over the girl and lovingly brushed her black hair out of her face,
"Wake up Zoe, you've got school."
A few years ago, Grey couldn't see himself as a father. He couldn't see himself in
a commited relationship either, but that was before MC walked into his life and
turned it upside down, infiltrating his walls.
When she said she was pregnant, Grey was scared. But somehow, seeing how
she glowed, he felt confident he' manage. He will not he like him. Nothing
is more important than family.
Zoe opened one icy blue eyes, so alike Grey's- MC liked to joke that she was a girl
version of him- and peeked at her father sleepily.
"Hey kiddo, Dad gotta get you ready for school."
"I'm sick."
"Sick?" Grey asked, his worried parent mode activating.
"Sick of Monday morning."
Grey snorted out a laugh. "Get up, smarty."
Zoe sighed but got up, running a hand through her messy black hair
that reached her shoulders.
"Where's mommy?" Zoe asked groggily getting up.
"She's on a job with Aunty Meg." Grey said as he started rummaging through her
closet, through pink dresses and cat shirts. He pulled out the dress he had gifted
her that Christmas, casual but frilly in a Lolita way.
Meanwhile, Zoe disappeared into the bathroom, dutifully going about her morning
routine while Grey assembled her outfit on the bed.
Grey cast his gaze over her tussled hair.
"How do you want your hair done?"
"Can you braid it?" The girl asked. She loved having her hair done, and asked
either Grey or MC to comb it.
"Well, I've done Meg's hair from time to time..." Grey said, thinking
how hard could it be.
Granted, Meg wasn't very impressed, but the girl had so much hair, it wasn't his
fault he tangled his hands in hed hair the first time he attempted a braid. Next
time it was better, meaning he actually achieved something resembling a braid.
Zoe sat down and Grey set to work, brushing through her hair at first, then starting
to braid. But he soon found himself frustrated.
"Ok, braid's not working, gonna leave it artfully messy like I do." Grey
said, tousling Zoe's hair.
"It's ok dad, you can't be good at everything." She patted his hand.
Grey looked down at her hand, opening his mouth to protest. Then he saw
that she was wearing the friendship bracelets Grey has made, colorful but
rather failed as far as bracelets go. Despite this, she wore them everyday
and that made Grey smile.
"You gotta admit, kiddo, even when I fail I do it in style." He smirked. That
drew a snicker out of the girl.
Grey checked his watch and barely suppressed a swear- MC hated it when he
cursed around Zoe. They had to hurry.
"Let's go eat, I made eggs and bacon."
Zoe and Grey went to the kitchen, followed by Miss Hyde and Jekyll. Miss Hyde
kept circling around Grey's legs with shrill meows, while Jekyll started purring
defeaningly when Zoe picked him up to stroke him. She was getting cat hair all
over her dress, but Grey couldn't blame her at all.
"Here's your plate and your chocolate milk."
"What about my cookie?" Zoe asked as she climbed on the chair.
Grey took a cookie out of the jar with a flourish. "And your cookie."
He had baked them in the weekend. He asked Meg to teach him because
Zoe loved when she made them.
Zoe munched on her breakfast thoughtfully, with Jekyll on her lap, greedily watch‐
ing the her food, hoping something would fall to him on the fork's way from the
plate to her mouth. Completely ignoring the bowl of cat food Grey has prepared.
"What's mom facing off against?"
"Some bad guys from the black market."
Zoe cocked her head to the side. "Didn't you used to be in the
black market as well?"
"For different reasons, kiddo." Grey looked at the time, and felt a
surge of panic. "Hurry up."
Zoe looked at him dubiously. "Are you sure you're not just avoiding the subject?
Mom said when she met you you did that a lot."
"Trust me, Zoe, I have nothing to hide anymore." He downed his coffee. "Let's go."
Zoe finished her food and went to grab her backpack, then met Grey at the entrance.
"Got everything?" Grey asked her, putting on his long coat.
"Yes." She chuckled. "My friends think you look like Neo. Or a vampire hunter."
Grey raised his eyebrows. "I'll take that as a compliment."
Grey searched his car keys on the entrance table, but they weren't anywhere
in sight. He patted his long coat- and found his motorcycle keys-, his jeans,
but nothing. He grew impatient.
"Where are the keys...Fuck."
Grey said fuck. Outloud. In front of Zoe. Grey's horrified face met
Zoe's delighted one.
"You know mom doesn't like it when you swear."
"Look, kiddo, I'll give you some extra cookies and we keep this between us, ok?"
He said tone tinged with desperation.
Zoe nodded and signalled her lips are sealed.
"We'll take the motorcycle." Grey grinned.
When Grey finally arrived at home after dropping Zoe at school- just in time-
and running some errands, he found MC on the couch, snoozing. She even
still had their coat on, but her shoes were next to the couch. She must have
collapsed as soon as she got home.
Grey leaned down over her, her black hair spilt around her. He placed a
kiss on her cheek and careful not to wake her up, slipped his arms under her and carries her to their bed.

August 25, 1950: The sixth annual Larry Gilbert Junior League All-Star Baseball Game was held at Sulphur Dell Park in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Before the minor league event began, another game, or spectacle, was held between “Grand Ole Opry Stars,” a team made up of Opry performers, and the “Fallen Stars,” a team consisting of other “distinguished Nashville citizens.” The event was heavily promoted and sponsored by the Nashville Banner newspaper in the weeks leading up to the game with Opry members gathering for a photo shoot at the Ryman in which they signed “contracts” with E.B. Stahlman, Jr., executive Vice President and co-publisher of the paper.
During the photo-op, “hard hitting third baseman” Ernest Tubb refused to sign his contract stating, “I’m not going to play on the same team as Red Foley!” One newspaper article facetiously claimed Tubb’s “heavy hitting and classy fielding have earned him several major league offers” and that his Opry teammates thought their chances of winning without the Texas Troubadour were not very good. The paper played up the dispute for weeks going so far as having Stahlman deny rumors that Tubb would be signing with the opposing team.
“It’s not a matter of money,” Tubb was quoted as saying, “I just don’t like Red Foley and can’t see any sense playing on the same team with him. And I’ll tell you something else, if Foley is able to hit a ball out of the infield on August 25, it will be the greatest miracle since the public took a shine to Foley’s kind of singing!” When Foley was asked his opinion on the dispute, he replied, “Tubb... Who’s he?”
Nearly 10,000 fans packed the stadium for the spectacle. Vocalist Delores Watson and the Bob Hamp Orchestra got the entertainment started with a selection of pop songs followed by a clown named Chalko and his diminutive assistant providing some comedy. The Opry Stars concluded their warm ups with a rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” before heading into their respective dugouts as the starting lineups were read over the PA.
Ernest Tubb had indeed turned on his fellow Opry stars and was announced as the second batter and third baseman for The Fallen Stars. Jim Denny presented the starting lineup and batting order for the Opry Stars; Grady Martin (C), Red Foley (1B), Bill Monroe (P), Lonzo & Oscar (2B), Hank Williams & Little Jimmy Dickens (SS), Rod Brasfield & Cowboy Copas (3B), Hank Snow & June Carter (LF), George Morgan & Milton Estes (CF) and Bob Eaton & Jim Day (RF).
After being led onto the field blind folded, comedian Whitey Ford, better known as ‘The Duke of Paducah,’ took his position as umpire standing behind the pitcher with microphone in hand. Once he was convinced that the Fallen Stars’ first and third base coaches were not spies from the National Barn Dance, a program that rivaled the Grand Ole Opry on Chicago radio station WLS, the Duke announced it was time to “play ball!” The Nashville Banner wrote that what followed was “the most awesome and awful presentation yet witnessed on an American diamond.”
Ernest Tubb, whose feud with Red Foley had reached “white-hot proportions” according to the newspaper, managed to get a hold of Red Foley’s guitar and stepped into the batter's box using the guitar as a bat. He managed to get a hit with the instrument and advanced to first base. But Foley got his revenge a few minutes later when he caught Tubb a little too far off the bag.
Upon further investigation, the umpire discovered Foley was in possession of a second ball and awarded Tubb two extra bases, putting him on third. The Duke of Paducah demanded that all Opry players immediately hand over any extra balls in their possession. He was besieged with baseballs from all the players on the field. When the Opry team batted in the bottom of the first, Tubb got the last laugh when he put Foley out by catching an infield fly.
The game was called after one inning when The Duke of Paducah forfeited the game to the Fallen Stars explaining that “the musicians wouldn’t play fair.” After the real game was over, the Opry put on a show. Ernest Tubb and Red Foley our aside their differences and performed “Goodnight, Irene” which would start a three week run at #1 on the Billboard Jukebox and Best Sellers charts the following day.
All the proceeds from the game were used to support four annual scholarships, three at Vanderbilt University, one at Peabody College, a Boy Scout camp, Key Clubs in three local high schools and the Red Cross Shield Center camps for under-privileged children. The event was pronounced the biggest success of any to date at that time.
Red Foley signing his contract to play on the "Grand Ole Opry Stars" minor league baseball team.
Ernest Tubb refuses to sign his contract stating he will not play on a team with Red Foley.
