Unlike scalloped hammerhead sharks, great hammerhead sharks are solitary and migrate long distances upward of 756 miles (1,200 km) alone.⁠ ⁠ Great hammerhead sharks also have a faster growth rate than the other hammerhead species and therefore reach maturity earlier, between 5 and 9 years old. Great hammerheads mate via internal fertilization and give birth to live young – anywhere from 6 to 42 pups – once every two years. ⁠ ⁠ ⁠ Great hammerheads primarily feed on prey at the seafloor, such as stingrays, cephalopods (octopus and squid), crustaceans and other sharks. Great hammerheads have been observed using the sides of their heads to pin down their preferred meal, stingrays, while feeding on the ray’s wings. They do not hunt prey larger than stingrays. ⁠ Great hammerheads are, however, vulnerable to overfishing. They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. Our dive group of 8 got swept out into a large school of Hammerhead sharks by a very EXTREME current!!!!👈 . . Sharks were scattering everywhere!!! We all got split up by the extreme current into the school of sharks.... and were basically every man for himself! Sharks were going everywhere in a slight panic behavior...we drifted right into the school!!! Above us, below us, on all sides sharks were trying to avoid hitting us!!!! It was INSANE!!! You could feel the 💥TURBULENCE💥 in the water from the sharks swimming all around us!!! . . I was able to keep my dive buddy in sight about 20 feet from me, but all others were gone somewhere in the chaos of sharks!!! I saw this green sea turtle try to make it's way through the sharks and actually HIT one of the larger sharks!!!! . . .After we all made it to the surface....we lost one diver and had to do a search and rescue. Thank God we found him!!! We were all seriously worried. As told by Galapagos Dive Master Alex Arnol Irons aboard the Humboldt Explorer dive boat, it was the best he has seen here since 2006! Perfect visibility and hundreds of Hammerhead sharks made this moment a rare and beautiful sight in the Galapagos! Located at the equator, the clear sunny day put the high sunlight directly over the school making the ambient light conditions unbelievably ideal for underwater video! 100+ feet of visibility is rare in this area, normally the nutrient rich cooler water has a cloudy 40-50 foot visibility. Our dive 2 hours before this one had about 50 feet of visibility. What’s your favorite species of shark?! It’s so hard for us to choose but #hammerheadsharks are definitely on our list! We mainly see sandbar and Galapagos sharks st our aggregation site but occasionally we are blessed with scalloped hammerheads or tiger sharks as well!
