Thinking about how the Kraang called everything Leo did, such as sacrifice and duty, meaningless, and shouted at him to "wipe that grin off your face" when Leo was genuinely smiling, let's talk a bit about the Kraang's understanding of family.

Throughout the whole movie, like the two examples pointed above, the Kraang pretty much undermine anything the members of the Hamato Clan do, just chalking up everything, and I mean everything, to just this sense of duty to save the world, despite being the stronger people on the planet.

And even though yeah, a lot of the motivation behind the Clan's actions in the movie is about duty regarding saving the world, another whole big part of it is about saving and protecting their family.

Which leads the viewer to believe that the Kraang have little understanding about family.

Of course, they have some, as we see a small amount of familial interactions between the three surviving Kraang, but compared to familial interactions held by other characters, we see that these interactions with the Kraang do not hold as much quality or meaning to them, and are not as strong.

So even though it is there, it's not much. When one of the Hamato Clan gets hurt, the plan and action change slightly so that all while trying to achieve their ultimate goal of saving the world, someone is still going to save that injured family member.

Whereas the Kraang, when a member gets hurt, the others are not phased at all. We even see Sister Kraang laughing when the Technodrome explodes and Older Brother Kraang is trapped in the Prison Dimension, all because she realizes that Leo got trapped up there as well. We see no sort of grief for Older Brother Kraang. Only pettiness and spite towards April for ruining her face and the rest of the Hamatos for ruining their invasion.

And this definitely has to do with their idea that the strong shall prevail, leaving the weak to die. Basically meaning that the little amount of familial understanding they have is reserved for the strong members of their species, whereas weak members are basically scorned and ignored (i.e. Older Brother Kraang talking about all the dead Kraang being too weak since they died and that it was better they did.)

So yeah, the Kraang have a bit of familial understanding, but it is very lacking due to their beliefs. (And when you think about it, also is what caused their downfall. The Hamato Clan was all working together, and Leo's sacrifice towards the end was very much rooted in saving and protecting his family. Whereas the Kraang, though being fairly in sync, were not looking out for each other, and essentially split themselves up to be taken out)

i think there's something very interesting about the fact that irl, turtles aren't very social or familial in any sense but the ninja turtles are incredibly social and love caring for others and this is arguably the greatest example of their humanity

I hate to post such ugly doodles but I really had to get it out. The Hamato clan’s spirits and the circle of sacrifices… what if someone from the past got envious the boys managed to break that circle (or at least as it seems so with the Shredder, cause the movie would beg to differ lmao), while they lost to it?

Also while drawing the Baby Blue comic, I kind of regretted not using this spirit/mind Leo more as I really enjoyed drawing him - so here is an idea to use this concept more lol

Scenes id love to see in rottmnt is the turtles realizing they all think their last name is different

Mikey thinks its "Jitsu"

Leo thinks its "Splinterson"

Donnie thinks their last name should properly be "Hamato-Draxum" but he hates Draxum so he's been using "Hamato"

Raph thought they didnt have one

Splinter never intended for them to have one (as he doesnt as Splinter) and his mixed feelings towards the Hamato Clan dont help clear things up

April thought their last name was "Turtle" and she never thought to actually ask them if they had a last name

A very interesting difference between the ROTTMNT turtles' mutation and the mutation of everyone else in the series is their lack of powers from that mutation.

Because yes, the turtles have powers, but those powers are very much implied to be mystic powers that are from their Hamato Clan genetics rather than the mutation itself. Because we see Karai, someone who has never been in contact with mutagen, use mystic power similar to the turtles. The only way the mutation gave the Turtles mystic powers was through the merging of their DNA with Lou Jitsu's, who was already a Hamato.

Whereas all the other mutants in the show actually got powers directly from their mutation.

And it is also important to note how Draxum said in episode one that he had "finally perfected the mutagen." Meaning that in the close to thirteen years between the Turtles' mutation and the events of episode one, Draxum had made changes to it, probably to make it stronger.

(Which also implies that something was wrong with the mutagen he used on the turtles, unless that was a lucky batch and all the batches before and after it had been faulty until perfection)
