Investigating Kudo Kamome's 'Trypophobia Experiments'

Born in Kobe and based in Kyoto, Kudo Kamome has processed everything from experimental indie rock to 8-bit computer game soundtracks through her music. Her new Trypophobia Experiments EP, released last month on Tokyo imprint Twin Capital, sees her collaborating with other producers for the first time to create what is described as “a whimsical and bizarre Japanese fantasy world”. Trypophobia is a supposed fear of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps – in which case it’s fair to say sufferers may struggle with the musical textures on display here.

‘Middle of the End’ is a gorgeous opening track, drifting along on delicious production by Japanese-American artist HAMACIDE, before MusicMap’s Shanghai-based fave Downstate takes over on the similarly spacey ‘Orion’, peppering the track with tasty hi-hat rushes. Atlanta’s Outer Order, who has previously collaborated with the equally out-there Eartheater, adds a touch of creeping drama on ‘Amorphous’, before the EP finishes on a typically intense Kudo Kamome production called ‘Secretive’.
