Decorating Debacle

I LOVE Halloween.  More than Christmas, more than my birthday, more than any other day of the year.  Around my small town I was known as the Halloween Queen thanks to my elaborate yard decorations.  I started small in 1998, putting out only a few things.  Each year I would add to the display until I had an entire garden shed full of nothing but Halloween stuff.  I’d get over 100 trick-or-treaters and tons cars driving by to look thanks to my yard.  Hell, I even made the paper once.  I’d put it up the first weekend of October and leave it up until November 1.  I only had one theft ever; an old mask that was serving as a severed head on a steak.  I enjoyed it so much, always trying to change it up and make it bigger, making most of the stuff myself. But...

Now it’s October 25th, a short 6 days away from The Big Day and the only thing Halloweeny about my yard are the leaves that have fallen off my trees. People around town are wondering what the hell’s wrong with me.  And so am I.

I still love Halloween as much as I ever have, I think.  I’ve watched a bunch of horror movies.  We’ve been to the Spirit store half a dozen times enjoying the animatronics and trying on costume stuff.  Over the last few days I’ve taken my 4 year old to 3 different Halloween events; she’s already got to wear her costume twice and we haven’t even trick-or-treated yet.  But I just can’t find the energy to do the damn yard.

Usually I could blame work, but I’ve had two clear weekends in a row and I just couldn’t make it out to the shed.  I could blame the fact that the shed is an evil, horrible mess that I don’t even want to touch, but it never used to stop me before.  I could be like like everyone else and blame having kids, but I decorated last year.  And the year before that.  And the year before that.  Besides, my daughter loves Halloween as much as I do, shouldn’t I want to make decorating the yard part of our Halloween tradition in honor of our shared love of the holiday?

I just don’t know what it is.  Am I depressed?  I don’t think I am.  Did I finally get too old for it?  I hope THAT’S not it.  What could it possibly be?
