!!!! so MUCH is happening emotionally so quickly -Yuri is entirely in his own head, which is certainly focused but with a potentially worrisome focal point (focusing on not losing focus is Not A Great Headspace) -Victor is not doing things wrong per se but Yuri having to look for him, Minako looking super unimpressed that he’s so naturally flashy, and Victor’s own nerves about how to treat Yuri before skating (and all of the :D-face talking and confidence in Yuri that isn’t helping his nerves) -and just, Minako knowing Yuri better than Victor does at this point, but at a point/place where she doesn't know how to/physically cannot help -Yuri skating up and going “jesus christ why is he prickly at me”

A quick note: I started off my first post by whining abt yoi not being a queer ladies iceskating anime but! It has been pointed out to me that this is all in the clever linguistic trick of “I can’t read japanese” and it’s spelled with the kanji for the name yuuri not -- the genre.  Not that I don’t desperately want a queer lady iceskating anime but. it’s not yoi’s fault, and I respect that.)

This is a dumb note but I love the different words animes tend to use for “episode.” Utena uses duels, Free! used-- swim times?-- and YoI uses skates!

Also speaking of bilingual flubs, I have read some really smart meta about how YoI goes out of its way to demonstrate that Victor and Yuri are speaking English as their shared language, and it’s cool that the show goes out of its way to establish these complicated linguistic relationships! Victor can’t always react to Yuri’s family because he doesn’t understand what’s being said! Good shit!! (Also Super Useful to know because otherwise Victor’s reactions are Super Weird, but it 100% makes sense that like half the time he’s just smiling blankly)

god the best part of yuri’s family running an onsen is that every episode is a hot spring episode. Everyone is just. So naked all the time.
